SCOPE OF WORKSHOP
Awareness of induced seismicity has further increased
since the last ECGS-FKPE-workshop in 2010: guidelines have been published as well as explicit measures
have been taken. Actual advances in research increased
the understanding of induced seismicity and help to
identify parameters which influence unwanted induced
seismicity. However, the processes of induced seismicity are still not completely understood. Organizations
like the Department of Energy (Majer et al. 2012)
or the working group Induzierte Seismizität of the
FKPE are working on guidelines in avoiding, dealing,
and measuring induced seismicity. Almost all current
underground projects and projects related to the energy storage and renewable energies (geothermal, carbon capture and storage, hydropower reservoirs, dams,
mining, underground gas storage) require sensitive local networks for monitoring induced seismicity. Fundamental is also an adequate and transparent information of the public as well as the disclosure of data to
increase public acceptance.
The majority of the problems accompanying induced
seismicity are met in the field of geothermal applications as power plants delivering heat in addition to
electricity need to be close to users. We are glad
to announce the Landesforschungszentrum Geothermie
Baden-Württemberg (LFZG) as the co-host of our second workshop. The LFZG is established by the State
of Baden-Württemberg as an independent institution
to co-ordinate research on geothermal energy, to inform the public and provide advice to ministries and
government agencies.
It comprises the following partner-institutions EIFER
(European Institute for Energy Research) Hochschule
Biberach, Hochschule Offenburg, KIT, University of
Heidelberg, University of Freiburg, University of
Tübingen, Universität Stuttgart.
This workshop will bring together the scientists involved to discuss advances of their recent research.
The special focus of this workshop is to include all involved parties such as: scientists from universities and
research facilities, operators and industry dealing with
induced seismicity as well as governmental earthquake
services, and public authorities licensing and imposing
requirements for underground operation.
TENTATIVE PROGRAM
This workshop is focused on special topics of induced
seismicity, namely:
• Monitoring strategies
• Modelling of source processes
• Tectonic stress and rock physics related to induced
seismicity
• Strategies to avoid/reduce induced shaking
• Case studies
DETAILS
A list of hotels close to the venue will be supplied upon
registration.
Registration fee: 150 ¤. This includes conference volume, refreshment during ice-breaker, coffee
break and lunch, and the conference dinner on Tuesday, 27.11.12 .
VENUE
Karlsruhe, the city of inventions in the sunny southwest of Germany, was founded ca. 300 years ago and is
situated in a beautiful countryside between the Black
Forest and the Vosges Mountains. It is famous for
its fan-shaped historic street plan and excellent ideas
such as the bicycle invented by Drais or the discovery
of electromagnetic waves by Hertz.
The conference will be held at the Karlsruhe Institute
of Technology (KIT). As a member of the Helmholtz
Association, the KIT is the largest science organization
in Germany with research and development activities
bundled in Centers such as Energy or Climate and Environment.
The venue (Karlsruher Institut für Technologie KIT,
Campus Süd AVG-Gebäude 50.41, Raum 145/146
Adenauerring 20a) is easily accessible via train or motorway and is in walking distance to Castle and city.
