Our Rector's Welcome Message
DEAR READER,
It is my pleasure to welcome you and tell you
about one of the most outstanding higher
educational institutions in Hungary, Szent István
University (SZIU). More than 18,000 students
study at the 7 campuses of the university. In
addition to conventional agricultural and
environmental sciences, SZIU offers courses in
veterinary medicine, mechanical engineering,
economy and social sciences, architecture, water
supply management, medical sciences as well as
applied arts.
The university headquarters are located in picturesque Gödöllô, but altogether
9 faculties and an institution located in Budapest, Jászberény, Békéscsaba,
Szarvas and Gyula accommodate our students.
Most of the schools of Szent István University have up to two-centuries of history.
The university offers an exceptional blend of quality traditional and modern
teaching, research and educational activities. Students may choose from various
fields of study, ranging from mechanical engineering to natural sciences,
economics or social sciences in programs which meet or exceed European scale
and quality standards. Graduates can use their highly respected diplomas to gain
meaningful, well-paying employment in many different fields.
We have been an active member in EU exchange programs for more than 10
years and have more than 50 bilateral university agreements or letters of intent.
It is among our top priorities to strengthen our external relations on local,
regional, national and international levels. Szent István University operates in
cooperation with more than 100 partner institutions in 50 countries on 5
continents.
We are not here for loud propaganda or false promises. The efficiency of all we
offer is continuously put to the test by our students and graduates. The career
opportunities provided by an education at Szent István are highly valued.

The buildings and the surroundings of our university campuses are among the
most beautiful in the country. We offer quality, recently renovated student
hostels where there are clubs and other facilities for students to enjoy their free
time. All of this makes university life for the students truly unique and
memorable. This is the everyday experience of all those who join us.
I hope that I have given a taste of Szent István University in this short summary.
I want you to see how we have become, through the efforts of so many people,
one of the most outstanding universities in Hungarian and foreign higher
education.
It is worth coming to SZIU and studying here!

Administratively, Hungary is divided into 19 counties. In addition, the capital
city, Budapest, is independent of any county government.
Climate and weather
Hungary is in the temperate zone, and has a relatively dry continental climate.
There are big differences between the weather in the four seasons, summers are
hot and winters are cold. Average temperatures range from -1 °C in January to
21 °C in July, but the minimum temperature can be as cold as -16 °C in the
winter or the maximum as hot as 39 °C in the summer. Hungary is protected
from extreme weather conditions by the surrounding mountain ranges, the Alps
and the Carpathians.
Useful links: http://www.idokep.hu, http://koponyeg.hu/
Geography
Hungary is a landlocked country, situated in the Carpathian Basin. Its two
longest rivers, the Danube and Tisza, divide Hungary into three parts:
Transdanubia, the plain between the Duna and the Tisza, and the Trans-Tisza
region. Hungary's 'mountains' are actually hills that seldom exceed an elevation
of 1000 metres. Two-thirds of Hungary's geographic area is less than 200 metres
above sea level.
Lake Balaton, covering 598 sq. km, is one of the biggest tourist attractions of
the country. The lake's average depth is two to three metres, and the waters
warm up quickly in summer.
There are five national parks in
Hungary. Two of them, situated
on the Great Plain - Hortobágy
and Kiskunság - protect the
wildlife and the fragile wetlands,
marsh and saline grasslands of the
open puszta. Two more are in the
north: the almost completely
wooded Bükk Hills and the
Aggtelek region with its extensive
system of karst caves. The smallest
park is at Lake Fertô on the
Austrian border.

Hungary is home to more than 2000
flowering plant species, many of which are
not normally found at this latitude. There
are a lot of common European animals here
(deer, wild hare, boar, otter) as well as some
rare species (wild cat, lake bat, Pannonian
lizard), but three-quarters of the country's
450 vertebrates are birds, especially
waterfowl attracted by the rivers, lakes and
wetlands.
Language
The official language is Hungarian, which
forms part of the Finno-Ugric language
family. Hungarians call their language
magyar. Although Hungary is located in
Central Europe, Hungarian is not related to
any of the languages that surround it.
Hungarian is spoken by 10 million people in Hungary. There are also sizeable
populations of Hungarian speakers in Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia,
Serbia, Ukraine, Israel, and the U.S. Smaller pockets of Hungarian speakers also
live in Canada, Slovenia, and Austria.
The largest Cities of Hungary
Budapest

Capital city of Hungary and the country's principal political, cultural,
commercial, industrial and transportation centre. With its almost two million
inhabitants it is the biggest and most densely populated city in the country. One
in every five Hungarian citizens lives in Budapest, and over half of the nation's
GDP is generated here. Half of the university students study in the capital, and
the majority of professors teach here, too. The proportion of researchers
working in Budapest is even higher.
The city itself lies on the banks of the Danube which divide it into 2 parts:
Buda, dominated by hills and slopes, and the plain Pest.

Budapest is a city of diversity, where you can find the marks of different
historical eras: to feel the Turkish atmosphere go and see the burial monument
of Gül baba; then the rustic streets and monuments of the Castle district; you
can witness the rapid transformation that took place during the 19th century by
walking along the Andrássy út or the boulevards. If you are one for undisturbed
calm, take a stroll in the villa quarters in Rózsadomb. The capital is rich in
historical monuments, there are countless architectural treasures, such as the
Parliament or the Opera House, the Szent István Basilica and the Buda Castle.
Besides, there are numerous sites and various events to see: more than 200
museums and 40 theatres; festivals throughout the year; around 80 thermal
springs and spas. The list is endless...

World Heritage Sites
Today Hungary has eight locations on the World Heritage List:
Budapest: Danube Bank View, Buda Castle District and Andrássy
Avenue
This encompasses the area on the Buda side which stretches from the Buda
abutment of Petôfi Bridge across Gellért Hill and Tabán up to Castle Hill
(Várhegy) and the Water town (Víziváros), and on the Pest side, from the
Pest abutment of Margaret Bridge to Petôfi Bridge. Andrássy Avenue was
added to the list as it presents a uniform architectural image of Budapest,
connecting Elizabeth Square, in the capital's innermost area, with Heroes'
Square.
The old village of Hollókô and its surroundings
The old part of Hollókô village, a settlement nestling in the Cserhát Hills,
has preserved its distinctive traditions to this day. Hollókô was the first
village to be declared a World Heritage Site. The history of the village goes
back to the 13th century, when after the Mongol invasion the castle was
built on Szár Hill. The name (holló=raven, kô=stone) perhaps, comes from
the legend in which the lord of a castle kidnapped a pretty maiden, whose
nurse was a witch and closed her into a room of the castle. The nurse made
a pact with the devil to rescue the girl: the devil's minions, disguised as
ravens, took the stones of the castle away.
The village is not just an open-air museum that exhibits folk traditions, but
also a living village where traditions and everyday life go hand in hand.

Aggtelek National Park
This area which stretches across the border is extremely rich in caves.
There is a spectacular, 22 kilometre long system of caves in the region.
Dazzling rock and crystal formations with names that include Dragon's
Head, Tiger, Mother in Law's Tongue and the Hall of Giants - as well as
dozens of underground lakes and winding passages - can be explored as part
of a number of guided tours.

The Benedictine Arch abbey of Pannonhalma and its natural
surroundings
The Arch abbey is one of the oldest historical monuments in Hungary. The
first Benedictine monks settled here in 996. Its 1000-year history can be
seen in the succession of architectural styles of the monastic buildings (the
oldest dating from 1224), which even today house a school and the
monastic community.

Hortobágy National Park
It became a national park in 1973, making it the first of the kind in
Hungary.
Its area is over 800 km2. Hortobágy is similar to a steppe, a grassy plain with
cattle, sheep, oxen, and horses, tended by herdsmen, and it provides habitat
for various different species (342 bird species have been registered to
appear). Its emblematic sight is the Nine-holed Bridge; besides, this is the
place for traditional sweep-wells. Hortobágy is Hungary's largest protected
area and the largest natural grassland in Europe.

Early Christian Necropolis in Pécs
In the centre of the town of Pécs, beneath Cathedral Square (Dóm tér) and
St Stephan's Square (Szent István tér) there is a Christian cemetery from
the 4th-6th century. Research and excavations thus far have uncovered
various burial constructions and over a hundred burial sites around a tomb
chapel, a cemetery building and a mausoleum. The first painted crypts
were discovered in 1780. They are ornamented with Biblical scenes,
images of the apostles Peter and Paul, and floral and animal motifs. Parts of
the heritage complex are open to the public.

Cultural landscape of Lake Fertô
Lake Fertô is the second largest lake in Central Europe, located in the
Austrian-Hungarian border. The lake covers 315 km2, of which 240 km2 is
on the Austrian side and 75 km2 on the Hungarian side. The special habitats

and the rural architecture surrounding Lake Fertô on both the Hungarian
and the Austrian sides form the Heritage Site. The territory which remains
of the originally enormous area of marsh and wetland has preserved a
unique flora and fauna, as well as an invaluable array of landscape,
ethnographic and cultural historic assets.
Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region
Tokaj-Hegyalja is a historic wine region located in Northeastern Hungary.
The region consists of 28 villages and 7 000 hectares of classified vineyards.

Tokaji Aszú
Described by Louis XIV of France as “the king of wines, and the wine of kings”,
Aszú is even referred to in the Hungarian national anthem. It is one of the
world's finest dessert wines. Aszú is made with grapes that have succumbed to
the botrytis cinerea fungus, otherwise known as noble rot. If conditions are
right, the botrytis mould causes sweet grapes to dry out and shrivel. The
resulting Aszú berries have a very high concentration of sugar and rich flavours.

Bull's Blood (Bikavér)
The Bikavér (Bull's Blood) blend, exclusive to the Eger and Szekszárd regions,
is the best-known among all Hungarian wines. Legend has it that the name
originates from the unsuccessful siege of Eger by the Turks in 1552, when the
heavily outnumbered Hungarians had nothing to drink but red wine. This
proved to be to their advantage, their red-stained beards and wild eyes terrified
the Turks, who thought they had been drinking Bull's Blood.
Pálinka
Pálinka is the generic name for the fiery fruit brandy often distilled by peasants
from home-grown plums, apricots and pears. Hungary's most famous pálinka
distilleries can be found in Kecskemét.
Unicum
According to legend, Unicum was initially presented to Kaiser Joseph II of
Austria, who proclaimed "Das ist ein Unikum!" ("This is a specialty!"). Today
the liqueur is produced by Zwack according to a secret formula including more
than 40 herbs and is aged in oak casks.
PICK Wintersalami (Téliszalámi)
The PICK factory in Szeged has been producing this famous and popular salami
brand for about 140 years, using a secret recipe. Made from pork and spices,
winter salami is cured in cold air and smoked slowly. During the dry ripening
process a special noble-mold is formed on the surface.
Makó onion
Makó is a town in southeastern Hungary famous for its onion, an important
ingredient of traditional Hungarian cuisine.
Zsolnay ceramics
A world famous brand name as a result of the innovations of Vilmos Zsolnay,
who developed the eosin glaze.
Herend porcelain
Since 1826, Herend has produced some of the world's most distinctive and
outstanding porcelains. The manufactory's name is derived from its home in a
small town not far from Budapest. Each and every piece of the hand-painted
dinnerware, figurines, and home accessories is an individual piece of art and

Hungarian paprika
Paprika is one of the most widely used ingredients of Hungarian cuisine. Due
to the favourable climate and geographical conditions Hungarian paprika has a
bright red colour and a distinctive rich flavour. Kalocsa and Szeged in the
southern part of Hungary are the heart of paprika production.
Rubik's Cube
The world famous Rubik's Cube is a mechanical puzzle invented in 1974 by
Rubik Ernô.
Here is what some foreign students said about Hungary:
"People, landscapes, food, music… How to choose one? I enjoy life every time
I am in Budapest. I like going to concerts, exhibitions, performances, I love to
have dinner in a nice restaurant with my boyfriend, I like the smell of hot
coffee, I enjoy looking at the windows of flower shops noticing all those small
things… Travelling in and around neighbouring countries - Hungary included,
of course - is another interesting question."
“My main advice to any people arriving to Budapest is to have coins in their
pockets. You will need them in order to buy your transport tickets - more
expensive if purchased directly from the driver but necessary if it's late and you
cannot find a ticket office open at that time. If you are a student, your student
card will be your treasure. Why I say that? Including the typical shop discounts,
you will save 50 percent on public transport, railways and so on.”
„Hungarian people surprised me when I arrived because of their hospitality. The
desire to help is what moves them to explain to you once and again, where is
the a street you are looking for in a language you cannot understand a word of.”
Sandra (24), Zaragoza, Spain
What was your biggest surprise/discovery concerning Hungarian
culture?
I had no clue that the Hungarians do have a lot of Nobel Prize holders, more
in science but still a lot for such a small country. They brought lot of inventions
to the world.

Concerning the culture I did not know that Hungary had many famous classical
music composers and nowadays exists a wide scale of young bands, which covers
not just the main music stream but also special music styles I've never even
heard before.
David, Czech Republic, CEEPUS Program
What do you like the most in Hungary?
The feeling of home. In any other country I traveled I felt like a stranger or
even a refugee. Here it is different: the air is like at home, food is like there, the
spirit of a country is so familiar, that this feeling of comfort (perhaps, a general
feeling about the whole country) makes me calm, merry and smiling.
Andrey, Russia, Community of European Management Schools (CEMS)
What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Egesegedre, of course. (egészségedre ed., means cheers)

Gödöllô
When you first arrive in Gödöllô, there will be a few things that everyone will
tell you about the town. Most of them will probably have to do with the royal
Habsburg family, since one of their most popular couples - Queen Sisi and King
Franz Josef - have used the Grassalkovich Palace as a summer residence.
In fact the town dates back to the Middle Ages when there was a village in the
area of Gödöllô, but it was wiped out completely during the time of the Tatar
invasions (1241-42). In 1349 the current king (Lajos the Great) gave the lhe
lands of Gödöllô to his loyal friend and servant Péter Pohárnok. In the next
couple of hundred years new landowners came and went, like the Vámossy or
Hamvay family. In 1692 there has been only 26 families living and farming here.
The turning point in our town's life came in the 1700s. It was then that a
Hungarian Count Antal Grassalkovich became the owner of the lands, moved
to Gödöllô and built the palace (1744-51) for which the town is now famous
throughout Europe.
The Royal palace of Gödöllô
20
Szent István University, Gödöllô • Gödöllô
The Royal Palace of Gödöllô
was expanded over the years,
and finally became the summer
residence of one of the most
beloved Habsburg queens,
Elizabeth, or „Sisi”. After her
untimely death at the hands of
an assassin in 1898, the palace
was used as a part-time
residence by many, including
Miklós Horthy, the Governor
of Hungary before and during
the Second World War. After
the war, the palace was used as
a barracks for Soviet soldiers,
then as a residence for the
elderly. Since then, parts of it
have been renovated (and is
still
under
constant
construction and renovation),
and is now worth taking in as a
tourist attraction.
Gödöllô itself, although home to a royal palace, is a quickly expanding suburb
of Budapest. It attracts a great many young professional families because of its
clean air and friendly atmosphere, as well as a good deal of high-tech industry,
including United Technologies, Avon, Caterpillar and Teva Pharmaceuticals
among others. While the industries are attracted by the excellent transportation
(connection by freeways to the capital, to the airport and to all main highways),
people are attracted to the area because there are many woodlands in the
surrounding area. Indeed, it has one of the highest ratios of wooded to
developed land in all of Hungary.
One of the other major attractions of the town is the university itself. Its main
building is one of the most beautiful higher education edifices in the entire
country. The university is also one of the largest employers in Pest County, with
over 2,000 persons currently working there. In short, Gödöllô has all the
amenities any prosperous town boasts. We believe it is a good place to live,
work and study, and we hope you will agree.

SZENT ISTVÁN
UNIVERSITY
Szent István University
SZIU (/siu/) is the acronym for Szent István University. It's a long name, and
to most of the people who come to study or teach, SZIU works better. SZIU
is traditionally an agricultural university, but that is changing now, as you will
see during your stay here.
Originally, the university was based in Budapest. It was established in 1948,
shortly after the end of the Second World War as the first independent
agricultural university in Hungary. Between 1950 and 1952, it moved here, into
the building it now occupies. If you look around the main building of the
campus, you will see that it has a lot of religious flavour. This is because it was
originally a building of the Norbertine Roman Catholic order, and functioned
as a high school. Of course, that all changed after 1945.
Studying
Education in Hungary might be a bit different from the educational systems that
you may already be familiar with in your own country. Unlike many of the other
European countries, we start our academic year not in October, but in September. The Autumn semester lasts until just before Christmas, but the examination period here lasts from January 4 or so until the end of January. Then, the
Spring semester starts after that, in the beginning of February. This lasts until the
end of May, and the examination period extends until the end of June.
Examinations might be a bit more familiar to European students than to those
coming from outside Europe, for instance, some of them are done orally with
the professors, and require that students be in formal dress to take them. (Dark
trousers with a white shirt and a tie for guys and a black skirt with a white
blouse for girls.) Another part of education here that might be different from
your home country's is attendance at lectures. For international students, since
you are studying in rather small groups, lecture attendance is obligatory.
At SZIE we use the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The ECTS
credit number is for each course is included in the course description of the
course. 1 ECTS credit usually refers to 25-30 contact hours with the subject.
If you are coming to do Ph.D. or research work you will need an Educational
Supervisor. We have been very successful in finding such supervisors for our
22
Szent István University, Gödöllô • Gödöllô
incoming students to work with. Both students and educators benefit from a
close, one-to-one relationship. Therefore, if you need a supervisor, we can
work on that but we have to know about your need for a supervisor as soon as
possible. If you are an undergraduate, or just here to take courses, you probably
won't need a supervisor and you will find a lot of people in departments and the
Registrar's Offices who can help you with your problems or questions. We like
to think that we are a personal and friendly institution, and the feedback we get
confirms this. We hope you will feel the same way during your stay here.
We operate on a semester schedule. You should plan to arrive a few days before
the beginning of classes, which start on the first or second Monday in September
for the Fall semester, and on the first or second Monday of February for the
Spring semester. The Fall semester lasts until just before Christmas. Then, after
a short holiday, the examination period begins, and lasts most of January. In the
Spring, the semester ends in late May, and the examination period lasts until
Gödöllô • Szent István University, Gödöllô
23
SZENT ISTVÁN
UNIVERSITY
about the end of June. When you arrive, we will do our best to make sure that
someone is there to meet you, and guide you through the process of settling in.
After that, we'll get you started on your studies.
Once you have your place in the school, and the preliminary paperwork is out
of the way, you can enrol in classes. This will also be done through your area
of study, in the registrar's office. The registrar's office will take you through the
steps to choosing classes and will also be responsible for helping you with any
academic problems that you might have. We feel that it is very helpful for the
student to enjoy close contact with the registrar's office, as they will give you a
„home base” to go to with your questions or concerns.
One of the things that will be important for you is computer access. It is
important to have your identification card and number, because then you can
get an e-mail account and have computer access. Each school maintains its own
computer system and rooms. Access to e-mail and the Internet is guaranteed,
but be careful about planning a bit in advance, as computer rooms can get
crowded, especially at the end of a semester.
Your classes will vary as to type and number of hours per week. You can take
any of the courses listed in the catalogue, and it is a good idea to ask in the
Registrar's office about new or alternative courses. You might find something
else that you like, especially if you can take a course in German or French. Most
course information, though, is in the course catalogue that you have already
received, and you should look for it there.
Once you are enrolled in your classes, there are some things you will want to realise
about Hungarian education. First, attendance is mandatory in seminar-type classes,
but not in lecture classes. However, Hungarian examiners will expect you to have
all the knowledge covered in the semester's work, and this is no easy task, so we
recommend that you attend classes at all times. Second, the educational system is a
lot more „old-school” than what you may be used to. For instance, when teachers
enter a lecture hall or seminar, it is often expected that students will stand up as a
show of respect for the teacher. Also, if you come late to class, please remember to
acknowledge this to the teacher by excusing yourself when you come in. It might
surprise you how much the little things count when you are abroad. If you have
questions on etiquette, it is a good idea to ask students. They are the ones who grew
up with the system. The Registrar's Office can also help you with this.

If you are a brave soul, you may want to try your hand at Hungarian, which is
one of the world's most difficult languages. Actually, we usually find that
students can pick up a lot of the rudiments of the language very quickly. We
have a book on Hungarian, written by one of the teachers here who handles the
HSL tasks for the university. If you'd like to take Hungarian as a Second
Language, just ask, and we can make arrangements.

Housing
The university has many different places for housing. Where you will be placed
depends on when you get your application in, where you want to be and
whether you are a graduate or undergraduate student. When you come, you will
have to pay a one-month security deposit on the room. You can arrive at any
time to occupy the room, as the dormitory is always open, but it is best to notify
the co-ordinator of your program or your advisor, so they can help you through
the process of moving in. Once you are situated, you will be given a dormitory
residence pass. This is important, because you will need this to get into the
dormitory, library or maybe even the main building, for security reasons. Try to
keep it with you at all times.
The first place you may receive accommodation is the main dormitory, right on
campus, where the undergraduate and some married graduate students are housed.
Buildings B and C have been renovated and D, E and F buildings are brand new,
all on campus and within a 5-minute walking distance to the main building.
You will receive bed-linen when you come. The personnel in the dormitory are
always friendly and willing to help. Visitors are allowed in the dormitory, as
long as they are registered. Of course, the dormitories are a drug-free zone, and
any use or possession of illegal substances is punishable by instant expulsion,
both from the dormitory and the university.
You may choose to live off campus. The following links can be helpful in your
search for a flat to rent:

Eating
Food is important; and Hungarian food has a good reputation for being
delicious. During the week, lunch is served at the school cafeteria from 11:30
to 2:30. The other meals of the day are your responsibility. A meal at Alma
Mater Étterem (the big cafeteria on campus) can be anywhere between 450
HUF (student menu, or DIÁKMENÜ - you will need your student card to get
it) and 1000 HUF. If you chose to cook, that will be cheaper - food prices are
about the European average in Hungary. The dormitories have kitchens
26
Szent István University, Gödöllô • Gödöllô
equipped with a cook top and a fridge, so cooking is usually no problem once
you have all your cookware and tableware. Also, there are three cafes in the
main building, three more in the main dormitory and one on the corner of the
A hostel building. Two grocery stores are within a minute walking distance
from the main building. Hungarian food prices for staples are about the
European average, and you can find some reasonably prices pizzerias in town,
most places also deliver.
For your weekly grocery shopping you might want to go to TESCO, which is
considered a cheap grocery store with wide selection in Gödöllô. (The cheapest
stores are Penny Market and Aldi with smaller selection - not far from Tesco) It
is at the other end of town, but TESCO operates a free bus line between the
railway station and the supermarket. For the timetable go to
http://tesco.hu/bus.php and scroll down till you find Gödöllô. There is also a
shopping centre (strip mall style) next to Tesco where you can buy clothes,
shoes, cosmetics, electronic equipment among many other, e.g. a Chinese
restaurant with large portions and reasonable prices.

The Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences can trace its roots back
to 1920 with the foundation of the Agricultural Department within the School
of Economic Sciences at József Nádor Technical University, Budapest. In 1945, the
University of Agricultural Sciences was established and moved to Gödöllô in 1950.
As a result of improvement and expansion on the fields of training, research and
extension services, the official name of our school was changed to The Faculty
of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the turn of the millennium with
the establishment of Szent István University by the merger of four formerly
independent schools.
The mission of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is to
educate environmentally conscious experts for the agrifood industry, and the
conservation of the environment.
Education and research
The study programs of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
cover all areas of agriculture with special emphasis on environmental aspects and
sustainability. Numerous degree courses taught in English are offered to
international students. In addition to the traditional disciplines of agricultural
education (crop production and animal husbandry) the faculty offers new
programs already adapted to European higher education, such as wildlife
management, rural development, horticulture, fish culture, environmental
management and agricultural biotechnology.

The experts of tomorrow should seek a tri-fold balance „Viable environment living landscape - healthy food” to achieve sustainability and quality in the fields of
agricultural production as well as to take into account the impact of mankind on
our natural surroundings.
We provide a positive learning environment where our students learn to
appreciate the need for humans and to meet the goals of sustainability. It is this
interdisciplinary approach that makes the Faculty of Agricultural and
Environmental Sciences a respected institution in agricultural and
environmental education in Hungary and internationally.
Our MSc and PhD courses are based on the high quality research performed by

FACULTY OF MECHANICAL
ENGINEERING
H-2100 Gödöllô, Páter Károly utca 1.
www.gek.szie.hu
Dean: Dr. István Szabó
The activities of our Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and its predecessors
have more than a 200-year-old history.
The current training profile of the Faculty has been developed from courses
adapted to the technical needs of agricultural production and processes.
In 1950 the foundations for the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering were laid in
Budapest as an independent college. From 1954 to 1958 it served as a faculty in
a larger university. In 1969 the school moved to its current location in Gödöllô.
Until 1993 the main educational and research profile of the Faculty was
agricultural machinery. To this were added programs for translation and vehicle
technical education in cooperation with other faculties, courses in
communication technology at the college level and education of mechanical
engineers at university and college levels.
A balanced proportion of courses, research and active participation in everyday
life has led to a versatile, well-prepared training and research staff, which
provides a solid basis for high quality education.
During the last few decades, highly successful co-operation has been developed
both within and outside the school, with close contacts in the scientific
community, partner institutions and foreign universities.
Since its founding, more than 7000 specialists have graduated from the school.
They have been playing a very important role in the engineering life in
Hungary, including the development of agricultural production and the raising
of standards of living in the countryside. The faculty became a key institution
within agro-engineering and established a doctoral (PhD) school for agroengineering and engineering sciences.

Good to know...
Who can help you?
If you find that you need help, and you cannot get to your coordinator/advisor;
or, maybe in a situation that is personal and you would just like some friendly
advice, you could try three sources for assistance.
One is the Student Centre, which we call the Diákcentrum. The personnel of
the Diákcentrum are here for you when you have need of them. They can give
you a helping hand in getting settled, advice you about Hungarian customs and
practices, tell you about events happening on campus or just have a friendly chat
with you.
Another source for help are the members of the school. Here at Gödöllô, we
pride ourselves on being helpful and caring about the questions, needs, concerns
and problems of our students, and that means you. In talking to a school
member, you can get a wealth of experience behind the answer you seek; or at
least, advice on where to go to get that answer.
The last source of help, and one that many students rely on greatly, are the
personnel who work in the dormitories. Besides the resident teachers, who act
as guidance counsellors and advisors in matters academic, professional and
personal to the students, many of the workers of the dormitory will be happy to
lend a hand in making your stay as pleasant as possible. Give them a chance to
help you, and we are sure you will be happy with the choice you made.

Transportation
One of the best things about Hungary for those who are looking to live on a
budget is the public transportation system. Within the towns, there are bus lines
that can get you anywhere you want to go. They are reasonably priced and run
very often.
Fare dodging is possible, but certainly not advisable. Plain clothes ticket
inspectors patrol the public transportation system all the time and if you are
caught without a valid ticket you have to pay a fine of several thousand Forints,
so it is not worth the risk. If you are using a temporary student card (brown
plastic card with a green personal paper card) please make sure to renew it every
two months at the Student Services or Erasmus/CEEPUS Office. For this you
will need an ID photo and 100 HUF. If you have a permanent, blue plastic
student card, you will need to get a new hologram sticker on the back of it at
the beginning of each semester. The sticker from the previous semester is valid
till the month of March in the next semester.
The main destination for travellers from here is Budapest, of course, which is
the nation's capital. Budapest is about 30-45 minutes by train (MÁV), bus
(Volánbusz) or special suburban train (HÉV). Any of these will get you into the
centre of Budapest and back out again quickly and easily, and for the most part,
on time. They each run about once every half-hour, so there is rarely a period
of twenty minutes when something is not going to Budapest. The schedules for
these are in each dormitory, and also on the website of the university. Taxis are
also good, but they tend to be expensive, and students use them only when they
have to. Telephone numbers for the stations, and people to help you arrange
these things, are everywhere in the university.

Tipping
It is customary to tip serving staff and pizza delivery people - add around 10%
to the bill or round it up. It is up to you to tell the waiter what sum you wish
to pay when s/he brings your bill. If you say nothing, you will receive exact
change. If you say “köszönöm” (thank you) while the waiter is giving you the
change, s/he will understand that the remainder has been left as a tip.

Recreation
Although Gödöllô is a fairly small town, there are actually a good number of
things to do here. In the main dormitory, you can show your dormitory pass to
get in and work out or use the sauna. There is a swimming pool on campus
which is open all through the summer, and there are extensive tennis court
facilities as well. Also, there are always excursions to the hilly areas of northern
and north eastern Hungary for hiking. These trips will sometimes be organised
through the schools and sometimes by students. If they are organised through
the schools, you can get the information for them there.
The House of Arts in the heart of Gödöllô, (currently being renovated) offers
courses on everything from loom weaving to Tai Kwan Do to German. It is also
the centre of town for art exhibitions. Movies and theatre plays are also put on
here, usually of a more artistic variety. All in all, the House of Arts, or „MûvHáz”, as it is called here, can provide a good evening's entertainment at a
reasonable price. The Royal Palace also puts on exhibitions and classical
concerts, usually focusing on the Baroque Period. These are usually held either
outdoors, in season, or in the Ballroom of the palace.
There is a cinema (“Mozi”) in town, across the HÉV tracks from the „MûvHáz”; where you can see whatever is currently playing in Hungary. Again,
prices for movies or entertainment in Gödöllô are usually very reasonable, and
the quality of the entertainment makes it a sure bet to get your money's worth.
The club of “Agymosoda” on the ground floor of Alma Mater cafeteria is also
a popular nightspot in the university, however it is open only a couple of nights
a week.
Of course, if you really want to get a taste of the cultural life of Hungary, you
are in a good position to do it, as some of the most famous entertainment venues
in all of Europe are here, only a about an hour away by public transportation in
Budapest. The Opera House, cinemas, theatres, museums, art galleries, tourist
spots, night clubs- it's all here. Budapest is one of the premier cities to have fun
in Central Europe. It is worth a try.

Currency and ATMs
The Hungarian unit of currency is the Hungarian Forint, abbreviated as Ft or
HUF in English. The following denominations are in use: Coins: 5, 10, 20, 50,
100, 200 HUF, bank notes: 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10 000, 20 000 HUF.
You can change currencies in several places in Hungary, like banks, exchange
offices, but never on the street! The commission fee and the exchange rate
might slightly vary from bank to bank, it's best to check the rates beforehand.
There is a dense network of ATMs throughout Hungary and they accept all
major credit cards. On campus you will find a Budapest Bank ATM at the base
of the steps leading from the Main Building to the Seminary Building and an
OTP cash machine near the vending machines, on the glass corridor leading
from the Seminary Building to the Mechanical Engineering Building.

Before travelling to Hungary, you should bear in mind that mains sockets may
be different from those in your home country. This problem can be easily solved
with a universal adapter. The voltage is 220 V AC, 50 Hz, sockets are twoforked.
Money and Cost of Living
The cost of living in highly individual and depends largely on your lifestyle.
Rent and utilities are around 45 000 -60 000 HUF depending where you live
and how much you need to spend on heating, water and electricity. According
to students you will spend about 70 000-100 000 HUF a month on top of rent
and utilities. This amount can be lower depending on your lifestyle, or can be
more if you travel around and outside the country and party a lot.
