Raphael’s Iconic Painting turns 500.
Kaum ein Werk der Kunstgeschichte ist weltweit so bekannt wie
Raffaels „Sixtinische Madonna“. Mit ihren beiden Engelchen besitzt
sie geradezu Kultstatus. 2012 wird dieses Gemälde 500 Jahre alt.
Die große Jubiläumsausstellung feiert die Entstehung dieses Meisterwerks und verfolgt seine Geschichte bis in die Gegenwart, einschließlich der beiden berühmten Engelchen. Mit mehr als 200 Exponaten,
darunter vielen hochkarätigen Leihgaben aus berühmten Museen in
Europa, wird erstmalig die ganze Geschichte dieses Ausnahmewerks
erzählt.

// In the whole of art history few works have attained such worldwide
popularity as Raphael’s “Sistine Madonna”. This painting with its two
cute cherubs has indeed acquired cult status. And in 2012 it will be
500 years old. This major exhibition celebrates the anniversary of the
creation of this masterpiece and traces its history down to the present
day, including two famous cherubs. Featuring more than 200 objects,
including many top-quality items on loan from renowned European
museums, the exhibition illustrates, for the first time, the entire history
of this exceptional work of art.
Raffael war der Malerfürst der Hochrenaissance. Er erhielt in Rom
1512 den Auftrag zur „Sixtinischen Madonna“. Im Zentrum der Ausstellung steht dieses große Werk, umgeben von Arbeiten Raffaels.
Dadurch wird begreiflich, wie Raffael stets auf der Suche nach neuen
Bildformen war, darunter besonders eindringlich die Komposition der
„Sixtinischen Madonna“. Natürlich stellt diese Ausstellungssektion
auch den Auftraggeber Papst Julius II. vor, der die Altartafel für ein
Kloster in Piacenza malen ließ. // Raphael was the preeminent painter of
the High Renaissance. He received the commission to paint the “Sistine
Madonna” in Rome in 1512. This great work is the centrepiece of the
exhibition and is displayed along with other paintings by Raphael. It
can be clearly seen from this how Raphael was constantly in search of
new pictorial forms, with the composition of the “Sistine Madonna”
being particularly poignant. Of course, this section of the exhibition
also focuses on Pope Julius II, who commissioned the painting as the
altarpiece for a monastery in Piacenza.

Fast 250 Jahre blieb die „Sixtinische Madonna“ an ihrem ursprünglichen
Aufstellungsort in Piacenza so gut wie unbekannt. Erst durch den
Ankauf für Dresden trat sie in die Öffentlichkeit. Eine eigene Abteilung
der Ausstellung thematisiert den spektakulären Ankauf des Gemäldes durch August III. 1752/54. Die schwierigen Verhandlungen waren
immer wieder vom Scheitern bedroht, bis schließlich auch der Papst,
der Herzog von Parma und die Zollbehörden überzeugt waren. Anhand
bislang zum Teil nie ausgestellter Dokumente wird der spannende
Ablauf des Ankaufs vorgestellt. // For nearly 250 years the “Sistine

This extended beyond the realm of high culture, with reproductions
of the painting entering the homes of the bourgeoisie in the form of
engravings, magazines, pictorial embroidery, poetry albums, advertising
and caricatures.

Die internationale Karriere der
Engelchen

Eine eigene Sektion ist den Engelchen gewidmet. Erstmals wurden
sie um 1800 aus der „Sixtinischen Madonna“ ausgekoppelt. Seitdem
haben sie eine völlig eigene Karriere durch alle Höhen und Tiefen
von Kitsch und Kunst angetreten. Eine opulente Fülle an Beispielen –
himmlisch, kurios, lustig, abgründig, geschmacklos – zeigt das ganz
eigene Leben der beiden Engelchen. Ein Kultbild wird 500, und alle
feiern mit! Erstmalig wird der „Sixtinischen Madonna“ eine eigene
Ausstellung gewidmet, ein völlig neues Ausstellungsformat. Der große
Überblick von 1512 bis 2012 erzählt anschaulich und zum Teil auch
augenzwinkernd die Geschichte von Raffaels Meisterwerk – von
seiner Entstehung in der römischen Renaissance bis hin zum globalen
Mythos.

first depicted separately from the “Sistine Madonna” in about 1805.
Since then they have had a career all of their own, experiencing all
the ups and downs of art and kitsch. An opulent abundance of examples – etherial, curious, funny, inscrutable, tasteless – illustrates the
autonomous life of the two cherubs. A cult image is turning 500 and
everyone is joining in the celebrations! For the first time an exhibition
is being devoted entirely to the “Sistine Madonna” – a completely new
exhibition format. In a lively and occasionally tongue-in-cheek way,
this comprehensive overview of the period from 1512 to 2012 tells the
story of Raphael’s masterpiece – from its creation in Renaissance Rome
to today’s global myth.
