Bavaria Meets Western Cape Expo 2010 Artscape Theatre 10. 06. – 17. 06. 2010 Bayerische Staatsregierung 1 special thanks Bayerische Staatsregierung 2 Dear Capetonians, Film Fans and Soccer Friends, We would like to invite you to take part during our Bavarian film week from 10. – 17. June 2010 in Cape Town. An excellent choice of award-winning, mostly FFF-funded productions will be presented by FFF in Cape Town and we would like to share this unique event with you. FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFF Bayern) has been funding films in Bavaria since 1996. The fund consists of funding from five public and private shareholders and the Free State of Bavaria. FFF supports the development, production and distribution of TV films as well as movies and strengthens Bavaria as a film location. A piece of Bavaria and a taste of Munich are offered in The Story of Brandner Kaspar, Oktoberfest, and Grave Decisions. The Oscar-winner The Lives of Others represents contemporary German filmmaking on the whole. Furthermore we present a large programme for children and young people.* In cooperation with our partners PowerChild, missio, and the German School in Cape Town, we will be showing among others the Cornelia Funke screen adaptation Wild Chicks I-III, as well as the screen adaptation Lippel’s Dream by the famous German author Paul Maar, the cult movies The Wild Soccer Bunch, The Crocodiles, and Vickie the mighty Viking. Our selected films for Cape Town tell stories about the world of soccer, the African continent and Bavarian filmmaking. The directors, producers and actors traveling with FFF to Cape Town will present their films personally to you and are eager to answer your questions. All of the selected films have already enjoyed success at the box offices and international festivals. The Bavarian delegation will be in Cape Town from 9. – 15. June 2010 and is looking forward to participating in an exciting exchange of ideas with you. The opening film, The Miracle of Bern – a film about the miracle of the German national soccer team at the 1954 World Cup – will get you in the mood for the coming weeks. The sport is also the topic of the film Soccer Rules!. The Oscar-winning drama Nowhere in Africa was shot on the African continent and Themba, a movie from Stefanie Sycholt, a South African graduate of the “Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film” in Munich, shows soccer as a motivation in the battle against AIDS. Prof. Dr. Klaus Schaefer Yours sincerely, *These Films have been highlighted in pink. The programme and latest information will be available at www.fff-bayern.de You are also very welcome to join the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern on facebook! 3 The Miracle of Bern Das Wunder von Bern by Sönke Wortmann 117 min., D 2003 Cast: Peter Lohmeyer, Louis Klamroth, Lucas Gregorowicz, Katharina Wackernagel Little Shark Entertainment, Senator Film Produktion World Sales: Bavaria In presence of Louis Klamroth Opening Film June 10, 5.00 pm Summer, 1954. The Soviet Union is sending its prisoners of war home. Among them is the father of the quiet, football-loving 11-year-old, Matthias, who lives with his mother, sister and brother in a West-German mining town. The boy has long found a surrogate father in the local football player Helmut Rahn, who has ”adopted“ Matthias as his mascot. The return of the boy’s father Richard casts a shadow over the once-happy family: broken by his years in captivity, Richard has trouble adapting to life in post-war Germany and alienates his family through his severity. For Richard, football is pointless, and so is the World Cup that’s about to be held in Bern, Switzerland. Matthias, however, longs to be there with his idol, who’s been chosen to play on the German team. Through his passion for the game and his fighting spirit, Matthias rekindles a love of life in his dad’s heart. And so, as the final match of the World Cup begins, a little miracle of love and generosity leaps across borders to help another miracle occur – the victory of Helmut Rahn and the German team, the miracle of Bern. The Wild Soccer Bunch II Die wilden Kerle II by Joachim Masannek 89 min., D 2005 Cast: Jimi Blue Ochsenknecht, Sarah Kim Gries, Raban Bieling, Wilson Gonzalez Ochsenknecht, Uwe Ochsenknecht SamFilm World Sales: Telepool In presence of Joachim Masannek, Uwe Ochsenknecht, Andreas Ulmke-Smeaton June 11, 11.00 am Yeeeees! Great dribbling from Leon, there, right across the pitch! He’s going to shoot! But no! He’s sold the defender the dummy! But what’s this? It’s little Raban coming down the left wing! He’s taken the ball! He’s heading for the goal! He shoots and… GOAL! GOAL! That’s it! And THEEEEERE’S the final whistle! Clear the pitch! Lock up the referee! The most daring team of junior soccer players to take to the hallowed green turf, The Wild Soccer Bunch, is back! This time they not only have to defend the trophy of trophies, the Teufelstopf, and their command of the town against the dreaded skater gang, the Flammenmuetzen, but also – shock, horror, gasp – fight for Vanessa (a girl of all things!) who’s fallen in love with their leader! The motto still applies: ‘If you want to be cool, you got to be wild’. For over a thousand years, he’s been traipsing through Bavaria, picking up his fellow countrymen to bring them to ‘paradise’. But then he happens upon the stubborn Brandner Kaspar. Brandner Kaspar definitely does not want to be taken off to all eternity just yet. No, no, he is 69, way too young to leave now. Boandlkramer tries all his tricks to get Brandner Kaspar to change his mind, but nothing works. Then Brandner pulls out some schnapps, really fine stuff, which seems to appeal to Boandlkramer. So much so, that he doesn’t even realize that Brandner is cheating him at a card game. With a hangover and without Brandner, Boandlkramer makes his way back to heaven. He put him off for 21 years and beat him at cards – if Petrus finds that out, there is going to be trouble. Best thing to do is just not mention it at all. Brandner Kaspar is reeling with glee, he beat out Death, who has now promised not to return until his 90th birthday. Now the coast is clear, or so he thinks... Oktoberfest tells of people who meet on the last day of the Oktoberfest, lose one another, then find each other again. These little and big stories track individual destinies drawn to one another, converging at the festival. A handsome Italian falls madly in love with a Japanese woman he meets in a festival tent… Tamiko, who happens to be on her honeymoon, realizes that her husband can’t hold his liquor… At the same time, the waitress Birgit has second thoughts about her marriage to Max, a musician at the festival… Talla, a dishwasher from Cameroon, hopes that he will find the courage to admit his feelings to Birgit… 16-year-old Jenny has her own problems. She loses her little brother Marc in the crowd. In her search she meets her father, who is there trying to end an affair with a student… While this is going on, Marc follows his new mentally-retarded friend Karl to the Haunted House… Edmund, Karl’s grandfather, knows that he doesn’t have much longer to live… Wheelchair-bound Frank, who only pretends to be handicapped, can’t get out of his lie without hurting Rena’s feelings. The proof is on her tombstone: she died the day he was born! Though his father Lorenz tries to calm him, Sebastian is terrified by the thought of spending years in purgatory. Hoping to knock off a few years by doing good deeds, he sets out to find a wife for his dad. The heavens must be listening, since Lorenz and Sebastian’s teacher Veronika both fall madly in love with each other. The only problem is: Veronika is married. But since Sebastian already killed his mother, surely it’ll be easy to kill a stranger... It appeared in 1977 as a novel, sold more than 800,000 copies, was issued as an audio book, is even used across the country in classrooms and has countless fans across all age groups, Die Vorstadtkrokodile has impressed and fascinated a whole generation. Now, for the first time, this exciting book for young people is being adapted with a great deal of humor, action and adventure for today’s cinema screens. Ten-year-old Hannes, growing up with his young, single mother wants to join the coolest gang in the area, the Vorstadtkrokodile (“Suburban ’Gators”). But the ‘entry test’ goes wrong and his life is saved by Kai, who is desperate to join too. But Kai is wheelchair bound and unable to even run away when things get hot. But when Kai witnesses a break-in, he suddenly becomes of great interest to the gang, being the only witness. He, in turn, will talk only if he can join. With his help and typically youthful imagination and courage, the group sets off to solve the case and take on the apparently unbeatable criminal gang. Five years before its downfall, the former EastGerman government ensured its claim to power with a ruthless system of control and surveillance. Party-loyalist Captain Gerd Wiesler hopes to boost his career when given the job of collecting evidence against the playwright Georg Dreyman and his girlfriend, the celebrated theater actress Christa-Maria Sieland. After all, the “operation” is backed by the highest political circles. What he didn’t anticipate, however, was that submerging oneself into the world of the target also changes the surveillance agent. The immersion in The Lives of Others – in love, literature, free thinking and speech – makes Wiesler acutely aware of the meagerness of his own existence and opens to him a completely new way of life which he has ever more trouble resisting. But the system, once started, cannot be stopped. A dangerous game has begun… Just before the outbreak of World War II, the German-Jewish Redlich family manages to escape the Nazi terror at the very last moment. Five year old Regina begins a new life with her parents, Jettel and Walter, on a small isolated farm in Kenya, where they lead an impoverished existence far removed from their roots in Germany. While Regina discovers the magic of Africa, a foreign continent full of strange people, her parents become desperate in the face of poverty and isolation. For Walter, his inability to cut Germany out of his heart tortures him far more than their economic plight. This remains so even when he becomes certain that the rest of his family in Germany has been murdered by the Nazis. A mountain village cut off from the rest of the world is the setting for the fate of this man whose musical genius overwhelms him like a catastrophe because it prevents him from following his heart and being happy with the woman he loved more than his own life. Wild Soccer Bunch splits up. All of a sudden Fabi comes up with a new team: the Beastly Beasts. And they contest the Bunch as the world’s wildest soccer team ever. The Wild Soccer Bunch is up against their greatest challenge so far, an opponent more devious, more dangerous, more diabolical, more than even they had ever imagined – girls!!! And if it weren’t for Nerv, their greatest fan, the wildest of all showdowns would not be happening. But watch out Beastly Beasts, “The Wild Soccer Bunch” is back and you’d better believe it: they’re wild, wild, wild! The factory is facing layoffs and maybe even closure, meaning their parents may lose their jobs, even their home. That would spell the end of the Crocodiles: if Ollie and Maria have to move, there would be no gang left for Hannes, Kai, Jorgo, Frank and Peter, either! So of course the Crocodiles would do anything to get to the bottom of the mysterious series of accidents at the plant – including hair-raising stunts and chases, secretive sleuthing, and even going so far as to get a makeover from Kai’s seriously annoying big-city cousin Jenny, so they can go undercover at the hippest nightclub in town. The Crocodiles put the pedal to the metal and race full speed ahead – on bikes and souped-up wheelchairs – into their next adventure! Hans Pollak is a hard core fan of Schalke 04. Together with his best friend Mike, he is member of the fanclub “Dios Knappen Gelsenkirchen”, named after their idol, the (fictional) Schalke star player Pablo Di Ospeo . Pollak is so single-minded that he neglects the birth of his second child to watch his favorite club, and takes his family and girlfriend for granted. One day, Pollak decides to bet his house that Di Ospeo will score in the next game. He is shocked to see that his idol is addicted to cocaine, abducts him and chains him into his room to make him quit cold turkey. Then, Pollak’s neglected girlfriend has an affair and Pollak’s mother dies of a coronary; Di Ospeo has tried to rescue her but could not reach her because he was shackled. Desperate Pollak decides to hang himself so that his family – he assumes that his house is lost – will at least get his life insurance. But his friends save him from the gallows with a Schalke flag, and a rehabilitated Di Ospeo scores the winning goal in the next game. Having won the bet after all, Pollak keeps his house and makes up with his girlfriend. His non-idyllic childhood in the rural Eastern Cape comes to an abrupt end when his mother is forced to look for work in Cape Town after losing her job, and he and his sister are left in the care of her lover. After Themba is raped, he and his sister go to look for their mother in Cape Town even though his soccer team stands to win the Eastern Cape Junior championships. They find her dying of AIDS. Themba has to force the fact that he, too, is infected. Against all odds, he realizes his soccer dream and plays for Bafana Bafana. This gives him the courage to take a public stand and tell the world that he is HIV positive. Shy 11-year-old Philipp, whom everyone just calls Lippel, lives in a small town in Germany with his father, a famous gourmet chef. When his dad has to go away on business for a week, he leaves Lippel in the care of his new housekeeper, Mrs. Jakob. He places an advertisement and, very soon, he is snowed under with candidates. After initial difficulties, the band’s first appearance is a great success. A German tour follows and it’s not long before the Comedian Harmonists are on every-body’s lips. But the enormous success makes the young men blind to the changing political situation. None of the six wants to take Hitler’s rise to power seriously although three members of the troupe are Jews... Six men, six voices, six fates – Joseph Vilsmaier’s film version of the rise and fall of the legendary Berlin ensemble Comedian Harmonists who started an international career at the end of the20s and fell victim to the National Socialist racial policy only a few years later. The series’ main character is Vicky, son of Halvar, chief of the Viking village of Flake. Unlike his village fellows - including most of the other boys of his age - Vicky is blessed with a sharp and imaginative mind which helps him and his fellow Vikings out of many tight situations, including rival Viking lord Sven the Terrible. Certain results of his intellectual approach shown in the series and the film adaptation include building a makeshift catapult to beat his father in a stoneferrying contest, fitting their longship with kites to make it glide through the air, and using a small sawfish to cut an escape hole through a wooden door. That’s life for 80-year-old piano teacher Traude Krueger. The old lady has been teaching music at the women’s prison for ages. But she has never met an inmate like Jenny: a killer who beats everything around her to a pulp just to amuse herself. However, she used to be a great talent. A piano prodigy even. And beneath her fierce façade, she still is. With Traude’s help, she could manage to win a prestigious piano contest. But a contest is no challenge to those who want their lives to stand still. On the surface, Chris and Gitti are lost in perfect amorous bliss during their getaway in their Sardinian vacation home. But amidst their playful romps, secret rituals and silly habits belies an underlying tension. Full of verve, the idiosyncratic Gitti is fearless in expressing her love and devotion for Chris, while Chris is more reserved in his outlook on life and sports, varying personal and professional degrees of insecurity. When they casually run into another, obviously happier and more successful, couple that on top of it all appears to be modern gender role proof, their relationship destabilizes. In a silly attempt at lifestyle bootlegging, Chris begins to show his wilful girlfriend who is boss, with the result that Gitti’s faith in her partner takes a hard knock. She attempts to conform to his new ideal, but what begins as a playful experiment soon turns into a quiet struggle with her own personality. While Chris flourishes in his role as the stronger one of the two, Gitti begins to loosen up in a completely new way. Anton comes from a very poor background and works every evening in a little ice-cream parlour as a stand-in for his sick mother. In spite of these social differences, the two are the best of friends. In the new film version of Erich Kaestner’s children’s book of the same name, Annaluise isn’t selling matches this time to help Anton earn some money, but is instead singing in Munich’s town center while her parents are at the opera. Annaluise learnt the songs from her French aupair Laurence whom the eternally absent parents thought was the ideal chaperone for Annaluise. When Carlos, Laurence’s greasy boyfriend, tries to break into Annaluise’s home, Anton is, fortunately, there again and the housekeeper, big fat Berta, has a great idea.... Every girl needs a best girlfriend. And Sprotte has no less than three! Together, they’re the “Wild Chicks,” the coolest girl gang of the pre-teen set. Though they’re as different as can be, they’re inseparable when the going gets tough. Melanie raves about Robbie Williams, Trude loves Italian food, Frieda is socially mega-committed and Sprotte herself secretly finds her teacher Frau Rose really cool. And then there’s Wilma, who still has to prove herself before being inducted into the gang. The biggest problem facing the girls is the rival boy gang, the “Pygmies.” Next to its leader Fred, there’s the insatiable Torte, fortune-teller Steve and the aggressive Willi. Then something incredible happens: Sprotte sounds the fox alarm! Grandma Slaettberg wants to slaughter her hens – even though Daphne, Kokoschka and the other feathered damsels are the gang’s mascots. In a former bus depot something amazing is happening. 250 pupils from 25 nations are dancing to Stravinsky’s Sacre du Printemps, which they have rehearsed for nearly three months, trained by the British choreographer Royston Maldoom and accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under its chief conductor, Sir Simon Rattle. Through the eyes of three young protagonists we take part in the project’s development, its ups and downs, doubts and enthusiasms, uncertainties and renewals of self-confidence. It is a fascinating journey into new, undreamed-of worlds and reveals surprising facets of the protagonists’ personalities. Recorded with a breathtaking fidelity of sound, the film documents the stages of the Sacre project and offers deep insights into the rehearsals of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Rhythm is it! is a delightful and moving record of the fascination of music, of the need for safeguarding education and training, of passion, diligence, love, esteem and zest. Munich, 1943. As Hitler wages a devastating war in Europe, a group of young people, mostly university students, resorts to passive resistance as the only effective way to cripple the Nazis and their inhuman war machine. The White Rose is formed, a resistance movement dedicated to the downfall of the Third Reich. Sophie Scholl joins the group as its only female member – an innocent young girl who matures into a committed and fearless anti-Nazi. On 18 February 1943, Sophie and her brother Hans are caught distributing leaflets at the university and arrested. Over the next few days, Sophie’s interrogation by the Gestapo officer Mohr evolves into an intense psychological duel. She lies and denies, schemes and challenges, lays down her arms and picks them up again, with greater force, nearly disarming her opponent. Then, the crushing evidence, the confession, and Sophie’s last, desperate attempt to protect her brother and the other members of the White Rose. Moved by Sophie’s uncommon bravery, Mohr even offers her a way out – but at the price of betraying her ideals. All the “wild chicks” are struggling with it, almost as in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which they’re staging with their teacher Rose. Melanie is deeply hurt since Willi has left her for another girl, Nana, who’s two years older than him. Frieda has a complicated weekend relationship with Maik, whom she met at riding camp. Trude dreams of fellow student Ricky’s smoldering gaze. And Sprotte is still seeing Fred. In fact, everything would be great between them if it weren’t for Sprotte’s jealousy. The wild chicks’ leader also has another problem to cope with: her mother Sybille is planning to marry the smart alec Thorben when Sprotte’s father suddenly turns up after twelve years and sets Sybille’s heart all aflutter... But the most difficult relation of all has to be Wilma’s. Love, as the chicks come to realize, doesn’t always have to do with boys. In spite of all the emotional turmoil, the clique manages to stick together – which is just what you’d expect from these wild chicks! A class trip to an idyllic castle nestled in a lush countryside? Most kids would see it as a welcome opportunity to have fun, play pranks and plot romantic rendezvous. But other than Trude, who’s developing a crush on Steve, the Wild Chicks aren’t in the mood for any of the above. Sprotte is upset and confused that her Fred wants to rush their “first time”. Melanie has been in a foul mood for days now, and won’t tell her friends what’s wrong. Is she having problems with her boyfriend Willi? Trying to mediate between the two, Frieda starts falling in love with Willi herself! Wilma can’t think of anything but her acting career. And to top it all off, Sprotte’s mom is going along on the trip as bus driver! The chicks and their male counterparts couldn’t be bothered with exploring the wonders of nature – they’re over their heads in exploring the wonders of young adulthood. And this means letting go of cherished friends and comforting rituals as well as accepting their own and others’ failings and strengths.
