I
M April 1881 öffnete das Natural History Museum
in South Kensington, London, seine Pforten für
die Öffentlichkeit. Diese großartige «Kathedrale der
Naturkunde» beherbergt eine der größten naturhistorischen Sammlungen der Welt, die kurz zuvor aus
dem British Museum in Bloomsbury umgezogen war.
Die Bibliothek blieb in Bloomsbury und bildet heute
einen Teil der British Library. Der Bibliothekar und
seine Mitarbeiter in South Kensington hatten die beneidenswerte Aufgabe, eine neue Bibliothek aufzubauen, um die literarische Grundlage für einen großen Teil der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit zu legen, die
im Museum durchgeführt wird. In den vergangenen
135 Jahren haben die Bibliothekare des Museums
eine Bibliothek geschaffen, die sich heute mit einer
jeden Sammlung auf der Welt messen kann. Die
Sammlung, die sämtliche naturhistorischen Themen
vom 15. Jahrhundert bis heute abdeckt, umfasst fast
alle wichtigen publizierten Werke der ganzen Welt.
Sie enthält viele reich illustrierte Bände von historischer Bedeutung, die einige der großen naturwis­
senkundlich geprägten Künstler repräsentieren, von
Inkunabeln aus der Zeit vor 1501 bis zu wundervoll
illustrierten Büchern mit handkolorierten Aquarellen
aus dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert.
Einige Bücher aus dieser spektakulären
Sammlung sind an dieser Stelle ausgewählt worden, um die Spannbreite illustrierter naturwissenschaftlicher Literatur zu repräsentieren, die im Lauf
der Jahrhunderte erschienen ist, von einem der frühesten publizierten Werke, Plinius’ «Naturalis Historia» um 1469, bis zu Haeckels «Kunstformen der
Natur» um die Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert.
Neben so berühmten Büchern wie Audubons «The
Birds of America» werden weniger bekannte Werke über Schalentiere und Insekten vorgestellt, von
denen einige zu den ersten ihrer Art gehören. Das
gemeinsame Merkmal dieser Bände sind ihre wunderbaren Illustrationen – Buchmalereien, Holzschnitte, Kupferstiche, Radierungen und Lithografien, sie
alle sind vertreten. Einige Titel sind wissenschaftlich
bedeutsamer als andere, wieder andere sind besonders selten, und noch andere sind wegen ihrer herausragenden künstlerischen Gestaltung berühmt.

Sie alle haben jedoch zur Entwicklung und zum
besseren Verständnis der Naturwissenschaften wie
auch zu unseren Kenntnissen der Natur beigetragen.
Museumsbibliothekare und Wissenschaftler haben
die Sammlung durchforstet, um einige Kostbarkeiten
wiederzuentdecken, die einer breiten Öffentlichkeit
die Wunder der Natur nahegebracht haben.
Die Erfindung des modernen Buchdrucks im
15. Jahrhundert bot die Gelegenheit, zahlreiche Kopien eines Werkes für ein viel breiteres Publikum zu
schaffen. In der Frühzeit des Buchdrucks waren vor
allem botanische Werke gefragt, in denen die medizinischen Eigenschaften von Pflanzen erläutert wurden. Als Entdecker in alle Winkel der Welt vordrangen und durch den weltweiten Handel Pflanzen und
Tiere aus zuvor unerforschten Regionen nach Europa
gelangten, entwickelte sich ein ganz neues Interesse.
Illustrationen bilden ein wichtiges Element
der naturhistorischen Literatur. Sie gelten häufig als
essenziell für die Vermittlung von Wissen über eine
Art und die natürliche Welt. Denn sie erleichtern das
Verständnis des begleitenden Textes und bieten Einblicke, die das geschriebene Wort nicht vermitteln
kann. Kunst, bei der es um die Darstellung der Natur
geht, basiert auf guter Beobachtung und gründlichen Kenntnissen des Beobachtungsobjekts, um das
wahre Wesen einer Art in einer Zeichnung einzufangen. Haeckels Zeichnungen konnten nur von jemandem angefertigt werden, der ein tiefes Verständnis
von Natur, Form und Funktion der Arten besaß, die
er abbildete, während Lears Papageienporträts über
die bloße Darstellung äußerlicher Merkmale der abgebildeten Arten hinausgeht.
Naturkundliche Bücher gehörten Mitte des
18. und Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts zu den Bestsellern. Die Mode, neue Arten aus fernen Ländern in
Kuriositäten- oder Naturalienkabinetten auszustellen, bot vielen Wohlhabenden einen angenehmen
Zeitvertreib, und Bücher zu diesem Thema waren
nicht nur nützlich, sondern häufig auch eine wahre
Augenweide. Seit Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts war
Interesse an Naturgeschichte nicht länger ein Privileg der wohlhabenden Oberschicht, die frei über
ihre Zeit verfügen konnte, sondern es gab auch viele
