Letter from the President Candis Carey
Hopefully everyone is off to a wonderful start to the new school year. It was wonderful seeing so many of our AATG
members, as well as some German teachers from Ohio and Illinois at our Immersion Workshop. It was an
invigorating day filled with new ideas, collaboration, friends and lots of laughter. We hope to see all of you at IFLTA this year! The date is November 5-7 with "Leading Indiana to the World" as the
theme. There have been multiple German workshops proposed. I have gotten some great ideas going to some of
the French and Spanish workshops as well. Sometimes some of my best lessons or ideas come from simply talking
to other teachers attending the workshops. Just being around so many other German teachers and language
teachers who are so passionate makes the conference well worth attending. Anke Fehling, An AATG German Language Consultant will present our workshop. Anke describes her presentation: STEM und Deutsch – Naturwissenschaftliche Ansätze in und mit dem Deutschunterricht Naturwissenschaftliche Inhalte begegnen uns überall in unserem Leben. Der Workshop stellt Ansätze vor, wie diese naturwissenschaftlichen Inhalte in den Deutschunterricht an High Schools und Colleges integriert werden können. An Beispielen wird aufgezeigt, wie authentische Materialien genutzt werden können, um sprachliche, historische, naturwissenschaftliche und ökologische Aspekte unter Nutzung der deutschen Sprache erarbeitet werden können. Alle Materialien werden zur Nachnutzung zur Verfügung gestellt und können individuell angepasst werden. For the first time we are trying to get together for dinner Friday, November, 6th at 7:00pm. AATG, Mohamed Esa, for the yearly German immersion. Thirty-four participants
gathered August 29th at Marian University. In addition to Indiana teachers, attendees
came from neighboring states such as Illinois, and Ohio. The theme this year was
“Kurzfilme”. Mohamed outlined the process of how to set up teaching with short films
including listening without pictures as well as watching without sound. He guided
teachers through activities that would help students after viewing the film. Participants
will receive a book with exercises as well as a DVD with the short films on it. At the end
of the day, Mohamed appealed to teachers to join AATG. He said that the organization
is set up to help teachers but there is a great need for teachers to join and take an active
part in their chapters.

Für mich, die Chance beim MINT-­‐Seminar zu machen war einfach toll. Als ich mich dafür beworben habe, wusste ich dieses Seminar wird perfekt für mich. Leipzig ist eine wunderbare Stadt. Am meisten denkt man an Leipzig und denkt man sofort an Geschichte, besonders Geschichte rund 1989. Aber Leipzig bietet so viel mehr als nur Geschichte an. Als Seminarort für das MINT, ist Leipzig auch praktisch. In Leipzig und die Umgebung haben wir die Chance so viel zu erleben. Ich fand es besonders interessant, mein Wortschatz zu erweitern und Strategien mit Fachtextarbeit zu lernen. Ich kann und werde diese neue Strategien nicht nur mit MINT-­‐Fächer in meinem Unterricht verwenden, sondern auch mit anderen Texten. Mit diesen Strategien und auch mein sicheres Gefühl zum Wortschatz, werde ich jetzt die Mut haben mehr zum MINT Themen (besonders Biologie) in meinem Klassenzimmer beizubringen. Während des Seminars habe ich (mit einer Gruppe) einen 8-­‐Tagigen Lehrplan zum Theme Wetter (Niveau A1) entwickelt. Dieses Lehrplan enthielt mehr als nur Wetter Wortschatz zu lernen, aber handelt sich auch um Temperatur-­‐rechnen (C-­‐F und F-­‐C), um Klimazonen, um Wasserkreislauf und mehr. Der Plan ist aktuell, benutzt realia (z.B: echte Wetterberichte von deutschen Fernsehen) und ist immer noch geeignet für Schüler die weniger als ein Schuljahr Deutschkenntnisse habe. Ich bin nicht nur Stolz auf unsere Arbeit, aber noch wichtiger, weiß ich, dass ich werde sie im kommenden Jahr verwenden. Direkt nachher habe ich an einen Lehrplan zum Thema Computer/iPad/Handy gearbeitet. Ich machte ihn nicht nur weil ich ECTS dafür bekomme, sondern auch weil ich will jetzt (sofort) benutzen alles was ich beim Seminar gelernt habe. Ich habe jetzt Zeit und begeisterung. Ich freue mich sehr auf mehr solche Pläne zu schreiben. Beim Seminar habe ich nicht nur neue Methoden, Ideen und Wörter gelernt, ich habe auch meinen Netwerkenkreis erweitert. Mit den anderen 19 TeilnehmerInnen und auch die 2 Kursleitern, habe ich jetzt 21 Leute mit denen ich kollaborieren kann. Ich habe 21 Leute mit denen ich Austausch (von Ideen, Troubleshooting u.s.W) auch machen kann. Besonders toll war die zwei andere Teilnehmern aus Indiana. Ich bin nur vor einem Jahr nach Indiana umgezogen und ich kenne nicht so viele Kollegen dort. Jetzt habe ich nicht nur noch zwei mehr Kollegen dort, sondern zwei Freunden. Das weiß ich zu schätzen. Ich bin überhaupt mit diesem Seminar zufrieden und ich bin echt herzlich dankbar dafür, dass ich die Möglichkeit mitzumachen gehabt habe. Ich empfehle dieses Seminar stark an anderen AATG-­‐Mitglied. On the occasion of German-American Day (October 6), the Indiana German
Heritage Society is sponsoring an essay contest for Indiana high school students.
Participants do not have to be currently enrolled in a German class in order to be
eligible. However, they should be able to write a brief biographical statement in
German.
Description: In 2016, Indiana will be celebrating its 200th anniversary as a state.
German immigrants have had a significant impact on the development of this
state. In preparation for the Bicentennial IGHS is accepting entries highlighting
these contributions. The winning essay will be published in the Spring 2016
Newsletter.
In your essay, you may write about one individual or several individuals (or
groups) who made significant contributions to Indiana over the past 200 years.
Your essay should include a historical perspective as well as link to the present.
How have the contributions of these Hoosier German-Americans shaped the
state? What is their legacy today? Factual evidence/ research, personal analysis,
and creativity will be considered equally.
