Spring 2012 - Jewish Family Services
Jewish Family Service An Open Door to Anyone in Need www.JFSdallas.org Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas Spring 2012 “Open hearts Open Doors” endowments and Planned giving for Jewish family service For more than 60 years, Jewish Family Service (JFS) has served the greater Dallas community, opening our doors to make the most impactful mental-health and social services available to anyone in need. Annually, people have opened their hearts to make contributions to JFS to support our many services. This has greatly helped offset changes in funding from organizations, the government or foundations and helped sustain and grow our services to meet community needs. To address these funding changes, it becomes increasingly important for JFS to secure endowment funds. These funds create further insurance, so that should personal, annual giving fall short and/or institutional funding be reduced, a reliable source of support will be available to maintain JFS services. “The importance of an endowment gift is to ensure the long-term viability of the agency,” says William N. Roth, JFS Foundation chair and JFS past-president. “That is why The Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas Foundation has been established. The benefit to donors is that they can make a lasting difference in one of two ways, an endowment gift through assets they have available today or a planned gift with a commitment of assets to fund a bequest in the future. Each provides the agency greater stability.” “Particularly in a time of highly variable funding dollars, endowed gifts will provide stability, so that our community can continue to count on us for high quality, confidential, accredited mental-health and social services that are available for as long as needed and on a sliding fee scale. No one knows what the future will bring, but when unexpected crises or normal, difficult life transitions occur, an endowed gift helps ensure life-changing JFS services will be available for us all,” says Michael Fleisher, Executive Director of JFS. “All planned gifts are important, no matter what the amount. Together, they add up to significant sustaining dollars.” There are many types of gifts that can help sustain JFS for the future, such as life-insurance policies, stocks, bonds, real estate and mineral rights. Staff works closely with each donor to customize a gift that reflects the donor’s concern for the varied challenges people face when they turn to JFS and the donor’s passion for helping people address, manage and overcome these challenges. At JFS, we want all donors to feel a personal connection and family pride in the way they are strengthening their Fagelman Birk Family Fund for Psychotherapy Diane Fagelman Birk, MD knows the work of Jewish Family Service (JFS) very well. A prominent Dallas psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Diane has consulted with agency staff, provided in-service trainings, referred people to JFS’ counseling services and served on the JFS Board of Directors. Based on this close professional and personal relationship with the agency, she and her husband David decided to create The Fagelman Birk Family Fund for Psychotherapy at The Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas Foundation. “The counseling services at Jewish Family Service are of such high quality and so difficult to find elsewhere that we want this fund to help preserve these critical mental-health services for years to come,” Dr. Birk says. “David and I want to ensure that these services are always available to anyone who needs them because emotional health is just as important as physical well being.” The Fagelman Birk Family Fund for Psychotherapy will help support individual adult and family counseling, group therapy and play therapy for children. Individuals experiencing depression, debilitating anxiety, traumatic stress reactions and/or mood “The counseling services at Jewish Family disorders will be helped as Service are of such high quality and so they work with JFS professionals to regain meaningful difficult to find elsewhere that we want this relationships and productive, fund to help preserve these critical mentalself-satisfying lives. health services for years to come.” community for generations. Opening one’s heart, through a gift today or one that will be realized tomorrow, keeps our doors open and our services available, enabling JFS to continue to provide help and hope for the future of our community. For details about The Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas Foundation, planned giving and legacy gifts contact Michael Fleisher, Executive Director, at 972.437.9950 or [email protected] or Gay Daneman, Donor Relations at 972.385.1212 or [email protected]. Lois Stillman Mexic Endowment Fund for Career & Employment Services In 2005, Lois Mexic and her husband, Bill, were among the tens of thousands of individuals from New Orleans who came to Dallas due to Hurricane Katrina. It was then that they, along with over 6,000 other evacuees, became familiar with the many ways Jewish Family Service (JFS) helps people in crisis. The Mexics quickly became an active, valued part of their new Dallas community, involving themselves with friends, their synagogue, community organizations and JFS. It was clear to them that JFS made an important difference in the lives of people who turned to the agency. In response, Mr. Mexic established The Lois Stillman Mexic Endowment Fund Benefiting Career and Employment Services at The Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas Foundation. The fund is a lasting memorial to his beloved wife, whose love and friendship were so much a part of the lives of their children, family and friends. “I feel good about setting up this fund to help others, especially those out of work. Lois could never do enough for people,” Mr. Mexic says. “This will continue that legacy.” “The Fagelman Birk Family Fund is a prestigious — Diane Fagelman Birk, MD endorsement of our services from someone with a depth of professional experience and intimate, long-standing knowledge of our work,” says Michael Fleisher, Executive Director of JFS. “What is equally impressive is Diane’s interest in helping to educate the greater community about the importance of mental-health services and the need for funds such as theirs.” The Lois Stillman Mexic Endowment Fund helps underwrite many of the JFS employment resources for job seekers, such as the Job Search Resource Center, one-on-one employment counseling and drop-in networking groups for women over 50, U.S. veterans or those who are long-term unemployed. Whether singly or in combination, these services support and guide individuals toward self-sufficiency. Our community thanks Diane and David Birk for their vision and commitment to counseling services and for helping to ensure that high quality mental-health support is available today and in the future. On behalf of our community and those who benefit from employment services underwritten through this fund, we thank Bill Mexic and family for establishing this meaningful endowment in honor of his wife Lois. How We Help: “Travis” community partners turn to jfs for expertise Travis* is a 4-year-old whom everyone always described as a “good boy.” He never caused any problems, so his teacher was surprised to hear that the in-school counselor was concerned about him. But the counselor had noticed that Travis kept to himself too often, rarely interacting with classmates. After meeting with him several times, she discovered that he was fearful and anxious about his home life. His mother was out of work and his grandmother was very ill but had no transportation to the doctor. The counselor introduced his mother to job counseling at JFS and arranged transportation for his grandmother with JFS volunteers. With his home life on a better footing and Last year, Catholic Charities turned to Jewish Family Service for help after deciding that their Mary R. Saner Child Development Center could benefit from on-site child assessment and counseling expertise. Ever since, JFS counselor Yolanda Swope, LPCI, has spent three days a week at the school. She works with the children—about 100 children ages 6 weeks to 5 years—as well as the teachers, staff, parents and anyone else who needs her help in English or Spanish. A year later, the benefits of the relationship are obvious, says Jennifer Livas, Mary Saner Program Director. “Before, if we saw a problem, we would make a referral. But people didn’t usually follow through. They were concerned about the cost, or uncomfortable talking to strangers,” Ms. Livas says. “But Yolanda is right here, part of us. Now, if we have any kind of problem or issue, we can get right on it.” Ms. Swope observes in the classroom and consults with teachers and parents about emotional concerns, developmental progress and learning issues. She offers age-appropriate play therapy for children, training for teachers and individual and group parenting work. When the Ismaili Muslim community needed to educate parents about keeping children drug-free or to teach caregivers how to cope—they, too, turned to Jewish Family Service. Carrie Stevens, LMSW and an officer from the Plano Police Department spoke to more than 85 individuals about drug and alcohol prevention at the Ismaili community center in Euless. The same weekend, Debi Weiner, ACSW, LCSW, coordinator of JFS’ services for the elderly, began a monthly caregivers meeting working with volunteers from the Ismaili social welfare board. “Cope with Hope” met monthly for five months, helping those who are caring for elderly or ill friends or relatives learn to handle the stresses of care giving and the importance of self-care. the additional Metrocrest Social Services in Farmers Branch contacted JFS to provide a job counselor for their clients. A JFS employment specialist is on site at Metrocrest Social Services every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to assist people in developing resumes and cover letters, refining interview skills, planning job-search strategies and identifying job opportunities. All services are offered on a sliding fee scale that can be as low as $0 so that the cost of service is never a barrier to help. support from a JFS counselor, Travis began to relax at school, And recently, the Vogel Alcove has contracted with JFS for a pilot project to provide on-site assessment and play therapy to children they serve, homeless children ages 6 weeks to 5 years. Additionally, we provide an employment specialist one day a week to work with parents. Parents and children can continue to access services from JFS after they have left the Vogel Alcove program. playing and interacting with his classmates. *Names and photos have been changed to protect confidentiality. How We Help: “Edward” While finding a job is a daunting task these days, Jewish Family Service’s expertise can make it easier. JFS counsels job seekers, perfects resumes, makes connections with employers and trains applicants for interviews. “We know how difficult unemployment is for families both financially and emotionally,” says Allison Harding, Director of Career and Employment Services. “Whenever we see a new way to be supportive, we’re sure to respond.” JFS offers one-on-one employment guidance, providing individualized assistance to identify career options/alternatives in employment transition. The focus is on placement, improving job-search effectiveness, achieving career goals and re-employment. There are many additional no-charge ways the JFS team can help. And even in this tough economy, employment goals are exceeded as 70 percent of those receiving one-on-one employment guidance from JFS staff obtain a job within six months or less. For more information, contact Allison Harding, Director of Career and Employment Services, at [email protected] or 972.437.9950. When Edward* came to JFS, he had been unemployed for six months. Every day, he looked at the Internet job boards and every week he sent out fifteen resumes. But he had not received one interview and he was feeling desperate. His JFS job counselor helped him learn to identify viable job openings and to create a unique resume for each application, making sure he included the crucial key words. It took a lot of work on Edward’s part, but he stuck with it. Within three months, Edward not only found employment, but he had a job with benefits and advancement potential. *Names have been changed to protect confidentiality. 2 1 VERIFIED CURRENT JOB LEADS at www.JFSdallas.org Each employer represented on our site has a personal connection to Jewish Family Service. Dr. Lurie was a passionate physician, family man and community leader. He was a dedicated advocate for many community organizations, including contributing substantial time and effort over many years at JFS. He led with great vision and creativity. In a paper he presented at the National Association of Jewish Family & Children’s Agencies Annual Meeting in 1991, he once again demonstrated his great vision and innovative thinking. Dr. Lurie said: “Perhaps the traditional model of planning, predicated on Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats is no longer a reliable methodology. Given today’s high rate of change and turnover, it is virtually impossible for most nonprofits to make reliable forecasts. We need to engage in more creative strategy which allows for greater variety, communication, trust, flexibility, originality and independence.” Amidst all of life’s rapid changes, Dr. Lurie was a steadfast advocate for those less fortunate, for high professional standards of practice, for volunteering of one’s time and for caring and compassion in everything that is Jewish Family Service. Today we are a better organization for his efforts. May his memory be forever a blessing. JFS JUNIOR ADVISORY BOARD The Jewish Family Service Junior Advisory Board (JAB) is a group of creative, passionate and dedicated Dallas-area highschool students of all faiths and backgrounds. The JAB’s goal is to identify areas that need to be addressed in the lives of teens and create a unique, open forum of discussion and engagement with the community. The JAB posts frequent “challenges” on Facebook that other students, community leaders and families can undertake in an effort to improve relationships. In response to their latest Facebook challenge to teens and families to complete a family activity that helps the community during the holiday season, the JAB hosted an event to make sandwiches for those in need. More than 60 volunteers joined together at JFS to make a total of 1,326 sandwiches for the Austin Street Centre. It was a wonderful afternoon of giving back. The JAB is also looking for new members. How We Help: “Linda” Linda* came to JFS looking for support in managing her 12-yearold son’s aggressive behavior. Her husband was away for work frequently and Linda was left to cope with her son on her own. Her JFS counselor recognized that two important aspects of Linda’s life were affecting her relationship with her child. First, Linda and her husband were having significant problems in their marriage due to his frequent travel. And second, Linda had experienced significant emotional trauma growing up that was interfering with her ability to interact with her son in a nurturing way. Through JFS, her son attended play therapy and made tremendous progress expressing himself through words and not destructive behavior, and her husband attended several sessions with Linda to work on their marriage. As she become more confident in herself, her marriage and her parenting, she began to pursue interests and activities that drew on her talents and skills. Today Linda is working in a career focused on her passions, her son entered college and her marriage has vastly improved. After several years of hard work with her counselor at JFS, Linda says she feels like a new person—a strong, passionate mother, wife and individual. *Names and photos have been changed to protect confidentiality. Change Begins with ONE: Mark’s Gift Fund You’ve heard us say it before—at JFS, change begins with ONE person. It just takes one person to commit to making an impact in the community and ensuring that needed community resources become a reality. Our thanks to one such person, Ms. Paula Donovitz, for her recommendation—in memory of her son Mark—that funding be forthcoming from The Paula and E.L. Donovitz Fund of the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation to help us add much needed psychiatric services (assessment for medication, prescriptions for medication and ongoing medication monitoring). Our additional thanks to the Rees-Jones Foundation for providing a match to this gift. Ms. Donovitz has taken the lead in expanding our mental-health resources to those in need. Individual gifts to JFS have a huge impact today and in the future. Whether you support JFS with your time, expertise, funds or attendance at a JFS event, we thank you. We hope you will continue to join us as ONE to create positive change in our Dallas community. Jewish Family Service gratefully acknowledges all of our donors for their commitment to our mission. Each gift listed has a direct impact, providing help and hope, changing lives and strengthening family and community. Ambassador Members Sylvan T.
