The 2000-01 Lady Cougars
The 2000-01 Lady Cougars Season Highlights • The Lady Cougars reached double digits in overall wins for the first time since the 1995-96 season, when they finished 12-16. Their 19 total wins are the most since posting a 22-8 record during the 1991-92 campaign. • Houston’s turnaround this season was cited as one of the nine best among Division I colleges in the country. • Houston earned a bid to this year’s WNIT Tournament and makes its first trip to the post-season since the NCAA Tournament in 1992. • Houston received a No. 3 seed at this year’s Conference USA Tournament, the highest in the annual tournament in school history. They also earned a first-round bye in the conference tournament for the first time in school history. • Houston snapped its 0-4 showing at the annual C-USA Tournament dating back to the 1996-97 season in defeating Memphis by a final of 70-64 in their first game on March 3. With the win the Lady Cougars advanced to the semifinal round and lost to eventual C-USA Champion, Tulane, 78-74. • Freshman standout Chandi Jones, though missing the final nine games of the season after suffering a torn ACL on Jan. 28, remains the nation’s leading freshman scorer in averaging 21.5 points per game, and she has shattered every C-USA freshman scoring record. Jones was named a WBJ All-Freshman All American second team, C-USA Freshman of the Year, to the First Team All-Conference and C-USA All-Freshman Team. She is the first Lady Cougar to be named to a first team all conference squad since Houston has been a member of C-USA. • Senior Monet Sykes, the Lady Cougars’ leading rebounder throughout the season, was named to the Second Team All-Conference. • The Lady Cougars closed out the season with a 10-2 record on home court at Hofheinz Pavilion, their best record at home since posting a 13-1 record during the 1991-92 season. Three of their ten home victories were by 20 points or more. • Houston’s six-game winning streak from from Jan. 7-Feb. 2—which also included an unprecedented six consecutive C-USA wins—was their longest winning streak since posting six straight victories from Jan. 25-Feb. 11, 1995. • Houston’s 71-52 win over Louisiana Tech, ranked No. 9 at the time, on Dec. 3 marked only the fifth time in C-USA history that a C-USA team defeated a top ten non-conference opponent. Their 19-point victory was the largest margin of victory over a Top 100 team in the history of C-USA. • Houston ended the regular season with four players averaging double figures per game: seniors Monet Sykes (11.8), Jessica Shanklin (11.2), ShaRonda Lasseter (10.3) and freshman Chandi Jones (21.5). Houston is one of the biggest surprises of the year The Lady Cougars’ 2000-01 season has been cited as one of the biggest turnarounds in the country, with record of the schools listed through games of February 23 (see box at bottom-right) . . . In a pre-season poll conducted by Conference USA coaches, the Lady Cougars were picked to finish in fifth place in the National Division of Conference USA . . . Through games of February 25, the Lady Cougars have proved to be the surprise team of the conference, as they have claimed a firstround bye in the league tournament and closed out the regular season behind Tulane in the National Division with a 10-6 record in the division race . . . This season they have reached double figures in overall wins for the first time since joining the league, and their 19 wins overall on the year are the most victories since posting a 22-8 record during the 1991-92 campaign, the last year they finished a season about the .500 mark . . . In the pre-season poll, both DePaul and Tulane were picked to win their respective divisions. Home is where the heart is The Lady Cougars played their final home game of the season against DePaul on February 18, and with the win closed out their home season with a 10-2 record . . . They have posted their most wins at home since going 13-1 during the 1991-92 season, the last time they finished a season with double-digit wins at home court . . . Their streak of seven consecutive home wins (12/3/00-2/11/01) is the longest such streak since a 14-game home stretch that began with wins in the final two games of the 1990-91 season and extended through the first twelve of the 1991-92 season . . . They closed out the 1991-92 season with a 13-1 home record, . . . Three of their 10 home victories this season have been by 20-or-more points . . . Including both exhibition wins, the Lady Cougars are a combined 12-2 on home court this year. The 1,000 Point Club Senior ShaRonda Lasseter, who entered this season 70 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau, became only the 15th player in Lady Cougar history to reach 1,000 points in her career when she nailed a two-point field goal with 2:03 left in the game against the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters on December 3 at Hofheinz Pavilion . . . The basket gave her 71 points on the season . . . Through games of February 25, Lasseter has scored 1,219 points in her career to rank 10th all-time in school history. 4 Lady Cougars reach career milestones Lady Cougar senior guard Cathy Lida reached a career milestone on Friday, Feb. 23, in Houston’s loss to Memphis, as she scored the 500th point of her career as a Lady Cougar . . . She entered the game just eight points shy of the mark, and with 17:04 left in the second half she nailed the second of her two free throws for her eighth of the game . . . Monet Sykes tallied her 500th career point with a two-point field goal with 2:18 left in the first half of Houston’s win over Memphis in the quarterfinal round of the C-USA Tournament on March 3 . . . Jessica Shanklin also tallied her 500th career point with her first three-pointer of the night with 12:22 left in the first half in Houston’s loss to Tulane in the semifinal game of the C-USA Tournament on March 4 . . . Lida closes out her career with 528 points, Sykes has 533 and Shanklin has scored 518 in her Houston career. Always there to lend a hand In addition to reaching the 500-point plateau, senior Jessica Shanklin also joined the ranks of two Lady Cougar individual season records . . . In Houston’s win over DePaul on Feb. 18, Shanklin increased her assist total to 126 on the year to crack into the Lady Cougars’ all-time top ten list for most assists in a single season . . . She ended the year with 159 total assists to tie Kip Anderson, who had 159 assists during the 1979-80 season, for fourth alltime . . . Shanklin averaged 5.13 assists per game, the sixth-best assist average by a Lady Cougar in a single season and the best overall since Tanda Rucker averaged 5.8 per game during the 1995-96 campaign. Hitting the Three As Houston’s leading threat outside the arc all seaosn, senior Jessica Shanklin closed out her final season as a Lady Cougar among the all-time list for three-point goals made and attempted in a single season . . . Her 55 threepointers made rank fourth all-time and her 162 attempts rank third. Team Streak Entering post-season play, the Lady Cougars have posted a 5-5 mark over their last five games and have won three of their last five . . . Their six-game winning streak from Jan. 7-Feb. 2, which also included an unprecedented six-game C-USA winning streak and was snapped by Charlotte on Feb.2, was their longest winning streak since posting six straight victories from January 25-February 11 of the 1994-95 season. Lasseter among Houston’s all-time career leaders In addition to joining Houston’s “1,000 Point Club” on December 3 vs Louisiana Tech, senior center ShaRonda Lasseter closes out her collegiate career ranked among the school’s all-time career lists for rebounds, field goal percentage, free throws made, free throws attempted and blocked shots . . . Through games of March 5, the native of Savannah, Georgia, has 712 career rebounds to rank fifth on the school’s all-time carom list, and she is fourth in career shooting percentage (53.8, 479-891), second in free throws made with 291, third in free throws attempted (518) and fourth in blocked shots (96). Nationally speaking... Among Division I Women’s Basketball statistical leaders (through games of March 5), Chandi Jones remains the nation’s leading freshman scorer and currently ranks 11th in the nation overall averaging 21.5 points per contest . . . Despite her injury, her 429 total points scored so far is the seventh-highest total in the nation. Leading the freshmen Though out for the season with a knee injury, freshman Jones continued to lead all C-USA freshman in scoring with an average of 21.5 (429 pts/20 g) per contest and is second in rebounds with a 5.7 per game (113rbs/20 g) average (through March 5) at the close of the regular season. The Freshman Sensation: Part II Despite her season-ending injury, freshman Chandi Jones has put together an impressive season worthy of national recognition . . . She was one of two Lady Cougars to have started each of the first 20 games of the season and her 429 total points still leads the squad . . . She is currently the country’s leading freshman scorer and second in C-USA in averaging 21.5 points per contest (through games of Feb. 25) . . . She had amassed 113 rebounds (5.7 rpg), 49 assists and still maintains a team-high 46 steals . . . Jones scored 30-or-more points three times and 20-or-more points in 13 games and is the only Lady Cougar to reach double figures in points in each of the first 20 games . . . The two-time USA Today Texas Player of the Year has recorded Lady Cougar game and season highs in both points scored (32) and rebounds (13) . . . Her 429 total points scored are the most by a Lady Cougar since All-American Pat Luckey bucketed 598 in 1995-96. Lady Cougars among the league’s leaders Houston’s Monet Sykes ranked fifth in C-USA with a team-leading seven double-doubles performances on the year, senior ShaRonda Lasseter had three and freshman Chandi Jones is one of 16 players to record one doubledouble this season . . . Jones is also one of 12 C-USA players to score 30 or more points in a game this season, which she has done three times . . . Lasseter joins Jones as a handful of players in C-USA to score 20-or-more points and pull down 10-or-more rebounds this year . . . Lasseter had 21 points and 11 boards vs Indiana on Dec. 1 and Jones scored 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds on Dec. 18 vs Eastern Washington. Torn ACL knocks Jones out for the season Freshman standout Chandi Jones suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee in Houston’s win over UAB on Jan. 28 . . . She suffered the injury with about 30 seconds remaining in the first half when she fell and twisted her knee after being fouled while attempting to make a jump shot . . . An MRI revealed the tear of the ACL, and surgery to repair the tear was successfully performed by Dr. Walter Lowe, the University’s head team physician, on Wednesday, February 14 . . . At the time of her injury, Jones, an All American/All Conference and CUSA Freshman of the Year candidate, was the nation’s leading freshman scorer, 12th overall in the country, averaging 21.5 points per game . . . She was second in scoring average in Conference USA and was leading all players in C-USA games with 22.0 points per game . . . Jones has been a major catalyst on both offense and 5 LADY COUGARS AMONG C-USA LEADERS All Games (Through games of 3/11/01) SCORING Chandi Jones .................... 21.5 14. Now in his third year, things are starting to fall into place and he credits his entire staff for the vast improvements. “I’m not sure that I’ve accomplished anything, but as a staff, a team and as a program, we have really made tremendous progress on all fronts,” said Curl. “From an academic standpoint, which is a top priority of this team, the overall direction of the program is up and in a very steady climb. Perhaps the accomplishment of which Curl is most proud since accepting the UH position has been the reaction to his recruiting process. When he took over the program three years ago, he wasn’t sure what he had inherited or what to expect. This year marks the first where the team is comprised of his recruits, including local high school standout and Team USA member Chandi Jones to sophomore transfer Courtney Pastner. “It [the recruiting process] has really shaped up, and that was such a tough job because of all the hurdles we were forced to overcome,” Curl explained. “And now that we have either jumped over those hurdles or gone around them, I think we are finally starting to lay down the foundation for the future.” Entering this season, he has compiled a 172-143 (.546) record in ten seasons as a women’s head coach at the collegiate level. He joined the Lady Cougars after two years as the men’s coach at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, where school administrators pleaded with him to work the same magic on a struggling men’s program as he had for the Blinn women. After a slow first year, Curl led the Blinn men to the play-offs in 1998. As the women’s head coach at Blinn from 1994-1996, Curl led four players to All-Conference honors and three earned All-Region selections while turning a .500 program into a 20game winning season. Prior to that, in 1993-94, he led the Stephen F. Austin women’s team to the Southland Conference title and a bid in the NCAA tournament while picking up Southland Conference Coach of the Year honors along the way. Before joining the staff at SFA, he coached the women’s basketball team at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, that won a Texas Eastern Conference Championship. At Trinity Valley, he coached five junior college All-Americans, 10 All-Region XIV players and 14 All-Conference selections. The Lady Cardinals were ranked No. 1 in the nation during the 1992-93 season, and Curl was twice named Conference Coach of the Year. Curl is a man that lets his actions speak louder than any words. He puts time and much effort into everything he sets out to accomplish. “I’m a 100-percent guy,” says Curl. “I don’t do anything half-way and I don’t do anything eighty percent. If I set out to do anything, I am going to give it 100 percent and that is the bottom line.” It is these same standards that have made his 25-year marriage to wife Lesa the bond that it is. The couple have two daughters, Angela and Jennifer. Angela (20) begins her third season as a member of the Lady Cougar team while Jennifer (17) will be a senior at Clear Lake High School where she also plays basketball. Staff gets a facelift in 2000-01 This off-season Curl rebuilt his staff and since they have been working to improve the women’s program in establishing it as one of the premier programs in the conference as well as the country . . . Curl added new assistant coaches DeJuena Carter-Chizer and Todd Buchanan . . . Carter-Chizer played for the Lady Cougars from 1983-86, where she was named to the 1986-87 First Team All-Southwest Conference and led the Lady Cougars in scoring with 525 points that season . . . Also added to the staff was Lesli Vollrath, who played for Curl at Blinn College, as the Coordinator of Basketball Operations. defense for the Lady Cougars and a big reason for their turnaround this season. Double-Double Play The Lady Cougars have had four players record double-doubles this season . . . Senior Monet Sykes amassed a team-leading seven--the last coming on March 4 in Houston’s loss to Tulane in the C-USA Semifinal (19 points, 10 rebounds), while fellow senior ShaRonda Lasseter had three and freshman standout Chandi Jones and senior Jessica Shanklin each recorded one . . . Sykes recorded her sixth against DePaul on Feb. 18 with a career-high 14 rebounds and 23 points; her fifth came at Charlotte on Feb. 2, as she poured in 14 points and pulled down 10 boards and her fourth was at Cincinnati on January 5 with 10 points and 12 rebounds . . . Lasseter and Sykes each recorded their third of the season in Houston’s win over Middle Tennessee on December 30: Lasseter scored 10 points and pulled down a season-high 12 rebounds and Sykes scored a season-high 18 points and 11 boards . . . Lasseter’s other two double-doubles came against Detroit Mercy on December 19 (13 pts/12 rbs) and December 1 vs Indiana (21 pts/11 rbs) . . . Sykes’ previous two double-doubles came on December 18 vs Eastern Washington (17 ppts/10 rbs) and at UT-San Antonio on November 29 (16 pts/10 rbs) . . . Jones’ sole double-double came against Eastern Washington on December 18 (20 pts/ 13 rbs) . . . Shanklin recorded the first of her season on March 3 in the win over Memphis with 11 rebounds and 10 assists . . . The Lady Cougars have had two players record double-doubles in the same game two times this season (Dec. 30 vs Middle Tennessee and Dec. 18 vs Eastern Washington). Shanklin’s record night The story of the Lady Cougars’ December 19 win over Detroit Mercy was senior guard Jessica Shanklin, who enjoyed the best performance of her collegiate career . . . She scored a career-high 27 points, including 20 in the first half, on a career-high seven three-point field goals . . . She nailed six three-pointers in the first half alone and later tied Jana Crosby for the second-most three-pointers made in a single game by a Lady Cougar when she hit her seventh of the game in the second half with 7:45 left . . . Shanklin scored a previous career-high 19 points and registered a then-career high five three-point baskets last season against Southern Miss on February 12 . . . Crosby made seven three-point field goals in a game twice, against Arkansas and TCU during the 1989-90 campaign. One for the books The Lady Cougars’ 19-point upset win over Louisiana Tech on December 3 marked only the fifth time in Conference USA history--and the first time since February, 1997--that a C-USA team defeated a top ten non-conference opponent . . . Houston's 19-point win was the largest margin of victory over a top 10 team in the history of C-USA . . . With the win, Houston became the fifth different C-USA school to knock off a Top 10 opponent, joining Charlotte, DePaul, Louisville and Southern Miss. Rack ‘em up! Freshman Chandi Jones’ 32 points against Louisiana Tech on December 3 is the most points scored in a single game by a Lady Cougar since Jennifer Jones scored 36 against Southern Miss on February 16, 1998 . . . The elder Jones’ 36 points remains ranked tenth on Houston’s all-time list for most points scored in a single game. In the record books The Lady Cougars’ 104-45 win over McNeese State in the season-opener on November 17--a 59-point margin of victory--ranks eighth all-time in Cougar history . . . The 104 points scored by the Lady Cougars were just 14 points shy of breaking the all-time school record of 117 points scored against Hawai’i Pacific on December 26, 1984. Jones claims C-USA Player of the Week honors for December 4 Houston freshman Chandi Jones earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors for the week ending December 3 following an outstanding four games in which led the Lady Cougars in scoring en route to a 3-1 record during the week . . . The standout freshman led the Lady Cougars’ offense as she amassed a total of 94 points in the four games, including a season-high 32 in Houston’s upset win of No. 9 Louisiana Tech on December 3 and 29 points on December 1 against Indiana . . . Jones shot over 50 percent from the field in field goals (32-59) throughout the week, nailed 50 percent of her three-point field goals (6-12) and made 75 percent of her free throw attempts (2432), including 13 of 17 against Indiana and seven-of-eight against Louisiana Tech. Check it out...Did you know? Freshman Chandi Jones attempted 31 field goal attempts in the game against Nebraska on November 22, good for fourth-most in a single game in school history behind Sharion Higgins, who coincidentally made 32 attempts against Nebraska on November 26, 1977 . . . Her 31 attempts were the most made by a C-USA player in a game all year. 6 HOUSTON 2000-01 HIGHS & LOWS INDIVIDUAL GAME POINTS ..................................................... 32, Chandi Jones ................................................. vs Louisiana Tech (12/3/00) FIELD GOALS MADE ............................... 11, Chandi Jones ................................................. vs Louisiana Tech (12/3/00) FIELD GOAL ATTEMPTS ......................... 31, Chandi Jones ....................................................... vs Nebraska (11/22/00) 3 PT FG MADE ...................................... 7, Jessica Shanklin ................................................. vs Detroit Mercy (12/19/00) 3 PT FG ATTEMPTS ............................ 10, Jessica Shanklin ................................................. vs Detroit Mercy (12/19/00) FREE THROWS MADE ............................ 13, Chandi Jones ............................................................ vs Indiana (12/1/00) FREE THROW ATTEMPTS ...................... 17, Chandi Jones ............................................................ vs Indiana (12/1/00) REBOUNDS ............................................... 14, Monet Sykes ............................................................ vs DePaul (2/18/01) ASSISTS .............................................. 11, Jessica Shanklin .............................................................. at Tulane (1/14/01) STEALS ...................................................... 6, Chandi Jones ................................................... at Southern Miss (1/12/01) BLOCKED SHOTS ........................... 4, ShaRonda Lasseter ........................................................... at Cincinnati (1/5/01) TURNOVERS ................................. 6, Several Players; last: ....................................
