Swiss Waste Management today: Context and Background Dr. Mathias Tellenbach, former Deputy Head Waste Divison, Swiss Federal Office for the Environment 11:25 Primary & secondary resources - new perception on Switzerland's raw materials Dr. Rainer Kündig, Head Swiss Geotechnical Commission SGTK, ETH Zurich 11:40 Resource Recovery at ZAR Fabian Di Lorenzo Head Process Development & Production, Centre for Sustainable Management of Recyclable Waste and Resources (ZAR) Switzerland works hard to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Already, Swiss and British companies are working together on a number of waste management projects in this country which aim to achieve this goal. The Swiss Pavilion at RWM will provide the opportunity for colleagues from both countries and further afield to exchange experience and information on the industry throughout this week. 11:55 RWM showcases the best in waste management from across Europe which is why we are keen to provide information about Switzerland’s research into CLOSING THE LOOP technology currently being undertaken by the Swiss Centre for Sustainable Management of Recyclable Waste and Resources (ZAR). The seminar will also give examples of British and Swiss collaboration in this area. It is therefore not good practice both ecologically and economically to put recyclable waste into landfill. A sustainable resource policy should be based on closed material cycles, and this means that the recovery of energy from organic fractions (WtE plants, Biogas etc) is now standard practice in Switzerland. The next phase in this process is the material recovery of metallic and mineral substances from the residues of WtE. The national development centre for sustainable management of recyclable waste and resources (ZAR) based in Hinwil, Switzerland, is developing appropriate technologies. This is taking place in close cooperation with industry which will bring it to market. Known as Urban Mining these technologies are based on systems and equipment typically used in the mining industry. Hydromethan AG Hydromethan AG is a spin-off from the Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland. Our mission is to offer environment and climate protection and offer the large scale production of synthetic natural gas (SNG) from organic waste fractions worldwide. The results of years of scientific research will be utilised economically and with professional responsibility. In 2012 a first demonstration plant will be built at a site in Switzerland. Contact on stand: Dr Peter Heusser tel: +41 79 436 2832 e-mail: [email protected] web: www.hydromethan.ch The treatment of EtW residues can sustainably increase the efficient use of materials and energy over the entire lifecycle of products. Additionally it helps to reduce the need for landfill. The Swiss vision is to ensure that within 10-20 years 100% of waste is recycled to energy and fresh commodities. This will therefore close the lifecycle loop. I.C.E AG Hitachi Zosen Inova AG Waste is our energy! This maxim, combined with our global vision of highly efficient, environmentally friendly thermal waste treatment, has been inspiring the activities and development of Hitachi Zosen Inova (formerly Von Roll Inova) for over 75 years. Our competence, broad know-how and international experience has enabled us to become the leading supplier in the field of Energy from Waste. We have worked on several UK projects from the construction phase through to the commercial operation- and are among the trendsetters of this cutting-edge technology. HZI and our important innovations have significantly contributed to the development of the original thermal waste treatment process into the advanced technology which is now available today. Visit us to learn more about how to make to most out of waste through energy recovery, combined heat and power, and flue gas cleaning. Speaker: Dr Helen Gablinger Contact on stand: Bettina Freihofer 4 I.C.E. AG employs a team of experts to assist operators of waste incineration plants, wasteto-energy power plants, biomass and sewage sludge incineration plants. We provide in-depth expertise and extensive service offerings for optimization, maintenance, retrofit, expansion and rebuilding work throughout all plant installations. We cover all the fields: from consulting and planning, system delivery and engineering, to numerous proprietary services including waste wrapping which is our own innovation.
