What started in 1864 in Stuttgart with H. G. Gutekunst has, in the course of five generations, become today’s Galerie Kornfeld Auktionen AG in Bern. This year’s auction series is dedicated to this anniversary, putting on sale a varied high quality range of important works from classical modernism to contemporary art, a unique collection of 46 works by Marc Chagall from the family estates as well as Old Master prints. The four catalogues with approximately 930 lots comprise beside important works by Marc Chagall, also seminal works by Georg Baselitz, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Ferdinand Hodler, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Giorgio Morandi, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Egon Schiele, Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt, to name only a few. Marc Chagall—46 Works from the Family Estates (46 lot numbers) One of the highlights of this anniversary year and doubtlessly the whole spring season is the exceptional sale of 46 works by Marc Chagall from the family estates. Comprising 18 paintings and 28 works on paper, these original works not only express the manifold aspects of Chagall’s oeuvre but are unique on account of their provenance. The selection focuses on crucial works from the second half of the 20th century such as “Les Amandiers. Esquisse”,1960–1961 (estimate: CHF 1.25 million), “Bouquets rouge et jaune sur fond bleu”,1975–1976 (estimate: CHF 1 million), “Les mariés”, 1979 (estimate: CHF 1 million), as well as individual masterpieces Chagall created when quite advanced in years, such as “Les fiancés au cirque”, 1982, (estimate: CHF 1 million) and the monumental oil painting “Le village en fête”, 1981, with an estimate of CHF 2.5 million. The auction catalogue includes introductory biographical notes by Meret Meyer, the artist’s granddaughter, as well as original texts by Marc Chagall and contemporary friends. Art of the 19th and 20th Century, Part I (150 lot numbers) The catalogue Modern Art, part I, comprises selected works from classical modernism to contemporary art. Especially noteworthy are Ferdinand Hodler’s impressive oil painting “Genfersee mit Jura” (1909) estimated at CHF 2,5 million, Egon Schiele’s “Zwei Mädchen” (1911), watercolour and gouache, with an estimate of CHF 2 million, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s painting “Portrait Kaspar Cadiepolt”, 1919 (estimate: CHF 250 000), Max Ernst’s plaster relief “Oiseau en cage” (1926), estimated at CHF 400 000, Oskar Schlemmer’s painting “Familie” (1928), estimated at CHF 250 000, Giorgio Morandi’s “Natura morta” (oil, 1963) with an estimate of CHF 500 000 and Alberto Giacometti’s bronze sculpture “Annette debout” (1954/1982), estimated at CHF 1 million.
