With finals over and the rest of our lives ahead of us, we started out. Some of us were so
sure of where we were going while others, like myself, without a clue. As if that was not enough,
the past spring-summer included the Chicago Democratic Convention and the assassination of two
national leaders. There was still Vietnam, bigger than ever and no longer so distant, especially as
more soldiers came home to their final rest. I'll be the first to tell you, I was scared to death.
The major driving factor for graduation was to be out of the heat of the "new" school. I
still have a vivid memory of sweat rolling down my brow due to the lack of air conditioning my
senior year. But it must have motivated me to finish or I may not be writing this now.
Fashion statements were constantly made in embroidered clothing, tie-dye everything,
Army shirts, headbands, sandals, and patches on jeans. The frizz hairstyle was groovy and long
straight hair (aka Mary, of Peter, Paul and Mary) was "far out". The class conscious student body
donned in colored glasses dissected itself into ephemeral social classes, such as soc's, jocks,
motorheads, and wallrats. The exercises of free will and constitutionally guaranteed freedoms
were tested as often as possible and pushed to the limit. Drugs reached the high schools in
Hammond. The movies of the times seemed to also be in transition with cowboys like John Wayne
in True Grit, Newman and Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid giving way to a
different kind of cowboy with Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight in Midnight Cowboy.
Musical artists were not to be over shadowed by screen artists with their diversity.
Popular music came in a variety of sounds and styles from classical (e.g. Henry Mancini's Romeo &
Juliet) to Motown, to bubble gum, to hard rock, to the British sound.
18+ year old males were deciding whether to enlist, become draft dodgers or beat the
heat of Vietnam by maintaining a student deferment. Flag burning protests were happening all
across America. Within all of this dissonance, the local enforcer was still "the paddle and Mr.
Ruff."
Things would continue to progress over the summer and fall. Neil Armstrong walked on the
moon and nearly half a million would take in the experiences of Woodstock. The USSR and US
began STrategic ARms limitation Jalks, while in Washington DC close to a million protested the
war in Southeast Asia.
The late sixties were not only a defining time of the twentieth century, whose influences
are still apparent in our culture, but also a time, which helped define what each of us has become.
And perhaps what we attempt to influence our children to become...
