Welcome to this Special Edition of FLARE!
magazine. FLARE! is the official publication of
the International Betta Congress and is usually
only available to members however the IBC is
making this issue available to everyone at no
cost and it may be freely distributed. We hope
this will give you a taste of what the IBC is all
about and that you will consider joining this
wonderful organization.
We are really happy to be able to feature the recent Area 2 Convention in this Special
Edition. For those of you unfamiliar with the IBC, it is divided into several showing areas
and Area 2 is made up of all the European countries. Their Convention held in March 2014
was an amazing event with some wonderful fish being shown. Kampffischfreunde did a
fantastic job hosting the Convention. I am certain you will take pleasure reading about
this wonderful event.

m März 2010 richteten wir zum
allerersten Mal eine Betta Bewertungsshow aus. Diese fand auf der
Messe Aqua-Fisch in Friedrichshafen
statt. Seitdem sind wir dort ein fester
Bestandteil.
Seinerzeit mit 48 Quadratmeter Standfläche und 23 Teilnehmern mit 178 Betta
haben wir nie geglaubt, dass schon 2 Jahre
später die Standfläche um 30 Quadratmeter
sein musste und die Teilnehmerzahl sich auf
40 mit 275 Betta erhöhen würde.
Als dann in 2013 der amtierende Präsident des IBC als Hauptrichter mit seiner Frau
zugegen war und uns mit Lob überschüttete
und anschließend dem IBC Judging Board
den Vorschlag unterbreitete aus unserer
ganz normalen Betta Show eine Area2 (Europa) Convention zu machen, fehlten uns
wirklich die Worte, aber wir waren alle mit
Stolz erfüllt. An dieser Stelle nochmals vielen, vielen dank an Joseph und Amy Becerra

At this time - with 48 square meters of floor space and 23 participants with

number of participants would increase to

When, in 2013, the current President of
the IBC was present as main judge with his

Bettas. Ceci a eu lieu durant
la grande foire aquariophile
Aquafisch à Friedrichshafen.
Depuis notre concours fait partie intégrante
de cette foire.
A l’époque, avec un espace de 48 mètres
carrés, 23 participants et 178 Bettas, nous ne
pouvions pas imaginer que seulement deux
ans plus tard, notre exposition aurait lieu sur
80 mètres carrés, avec 40 participants et 275
Bettas.
En 2013, le président de l’IBC de l’époque
qui était notre chef-juge, ainsi que son
épouse, nous ont fait l’honneur de nombreux compliments et ont proposé au
Comité des Juges IBC que notre simple
show devienne le Congrès annuel pour
l’Europe.

Nun in 2015 ist es bereits unsere 2. Area2
Convention welche wir auf mittlerweile 180
Quadratmetern Standfläche mit 17 Meter
Länge des Ausstellungsregals und 50 Quadratmeter Vortragsbereich und einem kleinen Bereich mit Meerwasser (Korallen und
weiteres) ausrichteten. Insgesamt sind wir
damit das 6. Mal in Folge mit einer großen
Betta Show auf der Messe Aqua-Fisch in
Friedrichshafen dabei. Seit 2014 als Area2
Convention.
Der Aufbau der Regale wurde wieder am
Mittwoch vor der Show begonnen. Die Erfahrung der letzten Jahre schon 2 Tage vor
der Show mit dem Aufbau zu beginnen
hat sich bewährt. Mehr Zeit gleich weniger
Stress und mehr Spaß. Als dann am Donnerstag Nachmittag die ersten Teilnehmer zum
Einsetzen ihrer Fische eintrafen war alles fertig aufgebaut und vorbereitet.
Noch 3 Wochen vor dem Show Termin
dachten wir es würde um einiges weniger
an Teilnehmer werden, da schon fest stand,
dass einige Teilnehmer welche sonst immer
da sind aus wichtigen Gründen nicht kommen konnten. Doch in der letzten 10 Tagenvor der Show änderte sich das dann doch
noch und so konnten auch in diesem Jahr
44 Teilnehmer aus 13 Ländern in den Betta
Klassen verzeichnet werden, darunter 7
Newbreeder. Hinzu kamen noch viele Gäste
wovon auch der eine oder andere an den
Abenden im Restaurant mit dazu gekommen ist.
Now, in 2015, we held already our second
Area2 Convention up on 180 square meters
of floor space with now 17 meter length of
the show- shelfs and 50 square meters lecture area and with a small area with sea water (coral and more). Overall, we are now the
6th times in a row with a large Betta Show
at the fair Aqua Fish at Friedrichshafen. Since
2014 as an Area2 Convention.
With the build up of the shelves was started again on Wednesday before the show.
To start two days before the show has been
proven, because of experience in the last
two years. More time means less stress and
more fun. As the first participants then arrived to insert their fish on Thursday afternoon was all pre-built and prepared.
Three weeks before the show we thought
it would be a lot less to participants, because
it was already clear that some participants
who otherwise always be at Friedrichshafen
can not come because of important reasons.
However, in the last 10 days before the
show this changed and in the end we had
have 44 participants from 13 countries in
the Betta classes were registered this year,
including 7 Newbreeder. In addition there
were many guests of which one or the other
one has come also to the restaurants in the
evenings.
A total of 326 Betta splendens breedingforms has been entered for the Show.
For the first time we added to our program,

Le mercredi avant le concours, les
étagères ont été montées. Commencer
l’installation 2 jours à l’avance est une méthode qui a fait ses preuves pour nous ces
deux dernières années.
Ainsi il y a moins de stress et plus de
plaisir.
Tout était prêt pour que les premiers participants puissent installer leurs poissons
jeudi.
Trois semaines avant le concours, nous
avons eu peur d’avoir moins de participants
que les années précédantes, car certains
habitués avaient des empêchements de
force majeure.
Mais durant les 10 derniers jours avant le
show, la tendance s’est inversée et finalement nous avons eu 44 participants de 13
pays, y compris 7 nouveaux éleveurs.
Plusieurs accompagnants étaient aussi de
la partie le soir au restaurant.
Au total il y a eu 326 Bettas dans le
concours.
Pour la toute première fois, nous avons
ajouté les catégories « Art et Artisanat » qui
ont été utilisées, avec un peu d’hésitation,
par 4 personnes.
A l’avenir il faudra faire plus de promotion
pour ces catégories.
Le concours de Friedrichshafen s’est
développé de manière notable et est maintenant un point culminent pour tout bettaphile, qu’il soit éleveur ou propriétaire.
Cette année, l’horaire a pu être tenu.
Les conférence ont été plus suivies que
l’an dernier, ce qu nous encourage à les
maintenir dans notre programme.
La seule chose qi devra être modifiée sera
le système sonore, afin que le conférencier
puisse être entendu aussi par les personnes
au dernier rang.
Le jugement a eu lieu le premier jour de la
foire aquariophile, vendredi.

Zuchtformen in der Bewertung.
Zum ersten Mal mit ins Programm aufgenommen wurden die Klassen“Arts and
Grafts“. Diese wurden noch sehr zögerlich
angenommen und letztendlich mit 4 Teilnehmer belegt. Hier gilt es für die Zukunft
einiges mehr an Werbung und Aufklärung
zu schaffen.
Mittlerweile hat sich die Betta Show in
Friedrichshafen merklich zu einem echten
Highlight für alle Bettaliebhaber (Züchter
und Halter) entwickelt.
In diesem Jahr konnten wir den Zeitplan
auch ziemlich gut einhalten. Die Vorträge
wurden um einiges besser angenommen
wie im letzten Jahr, was uns dazu bewegt
auch diese weiterhin im Programm zu belassen. Das einzige was wir hier im nächsten Jahr noch erweitern müssen ist eine
Beschallungsanlage, damit auch die in den
letzten Reihen den Referenten noch hören
können.
Die Bewertung der Betta fand auch in
diesem Jahr wieder am ersten Messetag
statt, den Freitag. Währendem die Richter
die einzelnen Betta und Klassen bewerteten
konnte das Messepublikum zuschauen und
sich beim Standpersonal über die Betta zur
Haltung, Pflege und Zucht erkundigen.
Nach der Bewertung wurden dieses Jahr
die Boxen wieder nach Nummern in Reihenfolge sortiert, da dies für die Suche bei
den Auktionen eine Menge Vorteile bringt.

year, which moves us to continue to leave
this in our program for the future. The only
thing we have to expand next year here is
a sound system, so that the lecturer can still
be heard in the last rows.
The judging has occured again on the first
day of the fair, the Friday. During the judges
judged the different Betta and classes the
visiting public could watch this and inquire
the booth staff about the Betta keeping,
care and breeding.
After judging the boxes were again ordered by numbers, because this brings a lot
of benefits for the search at the auctions.
The Area2 IBC judges meeting brought
many questions and ideas to the table,
which the representatives in the appropriate IBC boards certainly help to represent
our Area well.
The Area2 membership meeting was very
well received and here are a lot of questions
and ideas emerged for the future work of
our representatives in the IBC.

s’est très bien passé, de nombreuses questions ont été soulevées et des idées proposées. Les représentants au Comité Exécutif
et au Comité des Juges sont d’une grande
aide pour communiquer les interrogations
ou suggestions de notre.
L’Assemblée Générale Area 2 a aussi été
un succès, avec de nombreuses idées et
questions qui donneront du travail à nos
représentants.
De la même manière que les 2 années
précédantes, les ventes au plus offrant ont
eu lieu samedi et dimanche. Nous n’allons
plus proposer de telles ventes le vendredi,
car il est impossible de prévoir à quelle
heure les juges auront terminé leur travail.
La première vente samedi matin a eu
d’excellents résultats, bien qu’aucun poisson primé n’y soit proposé.
Mais c’est la vente de l’après-midi qui a
explosé. Durant un marathon de 2 heures,
plus de 70 Bettas ont été vendus. Le mâle
Best Of Show avec sa femelle, sont partis
pour 80 euros.
Un total de 273 Bettas ont trouvé preneur lors des 4 ventes sur les 2 jours, ce qui
représente 32% plus qu’en 2014.
La foire quant à elle a enregistré le nombre record d’entrées de 21’160 visiteurs sur
les 3 jours d’ouverture (21’080 en 2014).

Auch die Area2 Mitgliederversammlung
wurde sehr gut angenommen und auch
hier sind viele Fragen und Ideen aufgekommen für die zukünftige Arbeit unserer Vertreter im IBC.
Wie in den letzten beiden Jahren auch
schon praktiziert fanden die Auktionen erst
am Samstag und Sonntag statt. Freitags
findet keine Verkaufsauktion mehr statt, da
keiner Vorhersagen kann wie lange die Richter zur Bewertung der Betta benötigen.
Bereits die erste Auktion am Samstag Vormittag war überraschend gut. Obwohl noch
keine Siegerfische für diese Versteigerung
freigegeben waren, wurden schon eine
Menge Betta versteigert.
Die Auktion am Nachmittag sprengte
dann alles bisher Dagewesene. Mit einer
Dauer von ziemlich genau 2 Stunden wurden über 70 Betta (Einzeltiere und Paare)
versteigert – ein Marathon. Der Best of
Show wurde mit passendem Weibchen angeboten und brachte 80 Euro ein.
Insgesamt wurden über die zwei Tage bei
4 Auktionen 273 Betta an neue Besitzer vermittelt, das entspricht etwa 32 Prozent mehr
als wie in 2014)
An allen 3 Messetagen verzeichnete die
Messe Aqua-Fisch 21160 Besucher (2014;
21080).
Wir sind Stolz auf das was sich hier entwickelt hat, wissen aber auch dass es ohne
die vielen Teilnehmer, Freunde und Gäste
nicht so weit gekommen wäre. Daher
möchten wir uns bei Euch allen an dieser
Stelle ganz herzlich bedanken.
Wir freuen uns schon sehr auf 2016, darauf Euch alle wieder zu sehen, Spaß zu
haben und auf die vielen tollen Betta Nachzuchten.

As already practiced in the past two years,
the auctions are held only on Saturday and
Sunday. Fridays will be no more auction sale,
as none can predict how long the judges
need to judge all the Betta.
The very first auction on Saturday morning was surprisingly good. Although no winners fish were released for this auction, even
a lot of Betta were auctioned.
The auction in the afternoon then blew
up everything that has gone before. With a
duration of nearly 2 hours, auctioned over
70 Betta (individual animals and pairs) - a
marathon. The Best of Show was offered
with a matching female and brought 80
Euro.
A total of 273 Betta were sold by auctions
to new owners over the two days during 4

We are proud of what has developed here,
but we also know that it would not have
come this far without the many participants,
friends and guests. Therefore, at this point
we would like to say thank you very, very

to 2016 to see you all again, to have fun and
to see many fantastic Betta offspring.

The International Betta Congress (IBC or The Congress) welcomes everyone who is interested in bettas, whether new at owning
and/or raising bettas or an old pro who has raised thousands. The IBC feels there is room for all betta enthusiasts, be it young or old,
new or experienced, individuals, families, teams or commercial breeders. The IBC is a club of individuals, families, teams, and commercial breeders who support the keeping, breeding, and/or the showing of bettas bred by our members; the research into the
genetics of the betta species, and support of the preservation of the wild species through the Species Maintenance Program.
It is IBC policy that members who sell, trade or give bettas to others must represent the description of such bettas in a proper
manner, so as to assure that the buyers, consumers or recipients are not misled. An intentional misrepresentation would be a violation of the IBC policy and Code of Ethics. Moreover, it is the policy of the IBC, that when bettas are entered in a show, all such bettas
should be raised and bred by the entrant or exhibitor unless clearly stated otherwise. Failure to comply with this policy would be
contrary to the IBC Code of Ethics.
The IBC does not participate in the fighting of fish for any reason and does not condone the fighting of bettas by others; nor does
it support any individual or organization that does.
The IBC expects all members to conduct transactions with all parties in a responsible, fair and ethical manner, in all dealings concerning the purchase and sale of betta stock and supplies. While we hope that all disputes be amicably resolved among the parties,
the Congress, however, is not an enforcement agency for the transaction of betta stock and/or supplies, nor can the IBC mediate
disputes involving members or any individuals over said transactions. In the interest of fairness, the IBC does not endorse individual
business enterprises, and does not allow the promotion of those enterprises in posts on the IBC website, its forums or discussion
lists, whether they are personal testimonials or commercial advertisements.
The IBC believes that if all members abide by these simple guidelines we will have a happy, fun and stimulating club.
