Mozart Week 2012 - Stiftung Mozarteum Salzburg
Mozart Week 2012
World premiere by Sasha Waltz
You are again cordially invited to the Mozart Week of the Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg
from January 27 to February 5, 2012. A few highlights of the programme include the world
premiere of the new interdisciplinary project by choreographer Sasha Waltz and composer
Mark Andre, Mitsuko Uchida as “Artist in Residence”, Mark Andre as “Composer in
Residence”, a string quartet cycle performed by the renowned Minguet Quartet as well as
Mozart as center of the programme 2012. Mozart’s original instruments will be heard and
several of his original handwritten manuscripts of works presented in the programme will be
on display. As every year, internationally acclaimed Mozart interpreters will enhance the
extensive programme of Mozart Week 2012. The festival will be complemented by
conversations with the artists, pre-concert introductory discussions, children’s projects and a
film programme.
A new departure – and a new question
The Mozart Weeks of recent years were marked by a new departure. Mozart’s music, always
the central focus, was combined with contemporary music. The aim of these concerts,
staging encounters between different musical languages, was to offer a new kind of listening
experience – more sensitive, more attentive – for both Mozart and contemporary music.
The 2012 Mozart Week takes up this programmatic idea and carries it a step further, posing
a new question: Can there be artistic forms, apart from the classic concert format, in which
Mozart and contemporary music are also elements of staged and performative work?
How can we think about the development of an artistic situation where forms of art which
otherwise rarely come into direct contact might be brought together without constraints and
questioned about the potential of their mutual influence – music in the classic concert format
on the one hand, dramatic art on the other? What kind of encounter could that be? What kind
of encounter of works and forms – and above all, of musicians from various music scenes?
What kind of project might evolve from such an encounter? How can the listening experience
and the perception of the performative develop – and how can Mozart and contemporary
music be the field and the object of this encounter?
A choreographic concert
Sasha Waltz is one of the leading international choreographers of our day. In spring 2009,
she was asked whether she could imagine using Mozart’s music in the course of her work,
and at the same time – as so often in her works – to think about including contemporary
music.
From this initial conversation, from listening to Mozart, from further conversations and with
Sasha Waltz’s suggestion of inviting the collaboration of the composer Mark Andre, a project
has taken shape, to be premièred at the 2012 Mozart Week: “gefaltet” (“folded” working
1
title) – a choreographic concert by Sasha Waltz and Mark Andre. Musicians and dancers,
together with Sasha Waltz and Mark Andre, will work out a staged project with music by
Mozart and Mark Andre, with musicians and dancers on stage together – a project “beyond
the conventional hierarchies of artists and the arts” (Sasha Waltz). The musicians will be
Carolin Widmann (violin), Nicolas Altstaedt (cello) and Alexander Lonquich (piano). This
world premiere will open the 2012 Mozart Week.
Mozart and contemporary music
As the central figure in the 2012 encounter between Mozart and contemporary music, Mark
Andre, Composer in Residence, will also be represented in orchestra and chamber music
concerts, a concert with discussion, and late-night concerts. In the field of modern music, we
have also planned a concert series juxtaposing Mozart with works by Arnold Schoenberg.
Artists in Residence
This section of the programme will include the pianist Mitsuko Uchida as soloist in
concertos by Mozart and Schoenberg, with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by
Pierre Boulez. As 2012 Artist in Residence, Mitsuko Uchida will continue this theme in her
piano recital. Here as well as in a further chamber concert, she will be – for the first time in
Salzburg – joined in performance by young musicians: the pianist Jonathan Biss and the
Quatuor Ébène. Also in residence at the 2012 Mozart Week is the Minguet Quartet, one of
today’s leading young string quartets. Following the example of Schoenberg’s second
String Quartet with soprano, we have planned a series of string quartets with voice, with the
addition of Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet and Oboe Quartet. The vocal soloists will be the
baritone Christian Gerhaher and sopranos Mojca Erdmann and Claron McFadden.
Focus on Mozart
Mozart and leading Mozart performers are the focal point of the other 2012 Mozart Week
programmes. Guest conductors will be Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Ivor Bolton, Ivan
Fischer, John Eliot Gardiner, René Jacobs, Louis Langrée, Marc Minkowski, András Schiff
and Peter Rundel, and the young conductor David Afkham will make his début at the Mozart
Week. Once again this year – as ever since the inception of the Mozart Week more than 50
years ago – the three Vienna Philharmonic concerts, conducted by Daniel Barenboim,
Pierre Boulez and Ivan Fischer, are at the centre of the Festival. For the first time, we
welcome the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under John Eliot Gardiner and, as in
recent years, the Musiciens du Louvre · Grenoble with conductor Marc Minkowski. Soloists
invited to the orchestra and chamber music concerts include Emanuel Ax, Nicolas
Altstaedt, Annette Dasch, Mojca Erdmann, the Hagen Quartet, Patricia Kopatchinskaja,
Alexander Lonquich, Miklós Perény, Radu Lupu, András Schiff, Carolin Widmann and Jörg
Widmann.
2
Mozart’s original instruments and autographs
Performances will again be given on Mozart’s original instruments: his fortepiano (played by
Robert Levin) and his violin. Two of Mozart’s original manuscripts will be on view in the Large
Concert Hall before and after a concert at which the piece will be performed by Fazil Say:
Mozart’s piano variations on “Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman” K. 265 and the Sonata in A major K.
331.
Conversations with Artists, Film programme, children’s and youth projects
The programme will be enriched by live discussions with artists participating in the festival
(with the pianist Mitsuko Uchida as well as with the conductor René Jacobs). In addition to
the world premiere of the choreographic concert by Sasha Waltz and Mark Andre, an
accompanying film programme will enhance the offering. The Mozarteum Foundation will
integrate its children’s youth and family project “Ohren auf!” with the Mozart Week 2012
programme with the goal of exciting these audiences for music (the children’s, youth and
family programme will be presented at a later date). Pre-concert introductory discussions will
provide interesting information regarding the concert programme and are open to audience
members.
