DOK Market and
Dok Market online
In its 10th year, the festival’s digital video library DOK
Market offers accredited professionals the opportunity
to screen all documentary and animated films of the
festival’s Official Selection independently of scheduled
screenings. Additionally, we showcase more than
150 new documentaries with international appeal,
recommended by the selection committee, our international partners, or submitted by renowned world sales
companies.
For the first time, the DOK Market will also be accessible after the festival as an online video library
for six months. Registered professionals will be able to
watch our excellent selection of new films in the
password-protected DOK Market Online.
DOK Market offers a supplementary marketing and
distribution platform for professional guests, such as
film distributors, sales agents, TV buyers, commissioning
editors, festival programmers, journalists and others.
All presented films have been produced in 2013 or 2014.
Decision makers are welcome to book one of the 30
viewing booths in advance by e-mail [email protected]
or at the DOK Market counter on the 2nd floor.

International DOK Leipzig
Co-Production Meeting
The International DOK Leipzig Co-Production Meeting
is an internationally renowned platform for producers
looking for international co-production partners
and financiers for their new creative documentary
projects in an exclusive and intimate setting. This year
we celebrate our 10th edition!
The 34 projects from 22 countries are distinctive in
their diversity, various topics and film styles. They
are, however, bound by a strong common thread: how to
make meaning in a world where geographical borders
are rapidly shifting, disappearing, morphing into
something else altogether. To whom does this world
belong and who or what is driving us towards the
places to which we are collectively moving? Each film
has a distinctive voice, strong opinions and a desire to
activate change, on both micro and macro levels.
In addition to prescheduled one-on-one meetings,
the International Co-Production Meeting also features
case studies and information tables on different
international markets and co-productions.
A special focus will be featured on co-productions
with Catalonia, in cooperation with Catalan Films
& TV. We also continue to share and welcome new and
exciting projects and producers from East and Central Europe. We very warmly welcome participants from
the Balkan Documentary Centre (BDC) Discoveries
workshop, as well as our partners from the Institute of
Documentary Film in Prague (IDF). And finally, our
prize winners from Pitching Doc Montevideo.
Best of luck!

AniDox:Lab Presentation
AniDox:Lab is a workshop and laboratory where
documentary and animation filmmakers join forces.
The focus of the lab is to develop new approaches
and directions by sharing the knowledge of these two
genres. In Leipzig, you can meet the filmmakers
participating in this year’s lab. After each presentation,
there will be time for Q&A with the directors. The
head of the workshop, Tim Leborgne, and the
AniDox:Lab instructor Uri Kranot, will talk about
the learning process and the results of the first
two labs.

A First Glance at the Result
of the DOK.Incubator Workshop 2014

programme in Europe, is proud to present the
results of its third edition. After six months of training
and intense work, the nine creative, political, poetic
and personal film projects are presented for the
first time. By showing pilots and short excerpts of
their nearly finished films, the directors and producers
provide a first glance and offer film professionals

For the first time, DOK Leipzig and Tribeca Film
Institute team up to create a unique workshop focusing
on interactive nonfiction storytelling. Tribeca Hacks
<DOK> will consist of five multidisciplinary teams
comprised of filmmakers, journalists, designers, and web
and game developers who will be asked to explore new
tools and methods of story creation.
With a narrow timeframe of 2½ days, the teams start
off with ideas and end the hackathon with a prototype
or beta version in their hands. During the workshop,
the teams will learn to understand one another’s work
process, fuel one another’s imaginations and bend
the borders of audiovisual storytelling. The tutors of
Tribeca Digital Initiatives, Opeyemi Olukemi and
Amelie Leenhardt, will oversee the hands-on work,
inspiring the participants to think digitally and
creatively. The hackathon runs from Tuesday through
Thursday, October 28, 29 and 30. The session concludes with a final pitch presentations in front of a jury.

This is the time and place to see the innovative results
of Tribeca Hacks <DOK>, DOK Leipzig’s first
hackathon in cooperation with Tribeca Film Institute.
After two and a half days of intense work, the
multidisciplinary teams composed of storytellers,
designers and technicians will present their
projects in front of a jury and an audience of industry
professionals. Each team will have 10 minutes to
pitch, presenting storylines, technical devices and first
glimpses of the prototypes and their functionality.
The team with the most promising project will be
invited to participate in the 4th DOK Leipzig Net Lab
to further develop their non-linear story’s structure
and content.
Following the pitches, all cross media makers,
thinkers and festival guests are invited to our Interactive Drinks, kindly hosted by DREFAbrik!

To get to know one another is key to entering the film
industry and to succeeding. We want to provide
support for all those who are looking for networking
opportunities and inspiring ideas about producing
and marketing. After receiving great feedback from past
years, we are offering one-on-one meetings with
experienced film professionals for personal conversations in order to get expert advice, a customised
assessment and the opportunity to make contacts.
Experts from the following areas are ready for face to
face talks: festival representatives, sales agents,
experienced international and German producers,
representatives of funding institutions and of European
producer workshops, VOD specialists, and cross
media experts. Accredited guests can apply for one of
the 15-minute slots. Directors and producers with
a film in the DOK Market or in the Official Festival
Programme will have priority access. Further
information can be retrieved from our website (blue

Cross Media Screenings
The cross media screenings offer multi-platform
productions as a live cinema experience. Producers and
leading creators guide the audience through their
projects, allowing access to, and an impression of, the
world of non-linear storytelling. This new breed
of documentary and animation is experimental, interactive and playful, so be prepared to embark on an
exciting journey. The screenings give an overview of the
structure, outline and possibilities of current cross
media productions and explicate topics in detail as the
creative uses of the interactive modules of a project
are demonstrated.

Anima Meets Doc: Expanded
Anima Talk
Documentary, animation, trans- and crossmedia
makers: Join us for an afternoon round table session
of new discoveries and connections. Bigger, bolder,
broader and under the guidance of exciting
table hosts from across these industries, be inspired
by peers and forge new links outside of traditional
genres at one of DOK Leipzig’s most dynamic
networking events. This is not a traditional pitching
or networking session. We won’t be presenting
specific projects or plan meetings for you. Instead,
we want to help you create meaningful working
relationships with a broad cross-section of
professionals, share experiences with like-minded
colleagues and be inspired by forward, sideways
and innovative thinkers.
The goal is connectivity: let’s establish a new
community of exciting non-fiction storytellers!

For documentary films the camera is just as important
as the direction. In the history of documentary,
the DEFA-School has actually become known for its
unique visual style. Directors such as Jürgen
Böttcher and Volker Koepp have developed films that
receive a great impact through the poetic realism
of cinematographers Thomas Plenert and the
field around Christian Lehmann’s school. For the first
time in this constellation, the experts will not
only talk about the DEFA, but will further evaluate
the camera’s role in documentary, specifically
on the role of the cinematographer in relation to the
artistic process, a theme of fundamental importance
for the genre.

Documentary Film within the (Media)War
DOK Talk Special
From the End of a Myth.
Images of Post-9/11 America
The Russian/Ukrainian crisis is much more than a
desperate combat between two unequal brothers.
Moreover, it is obvious that the media, concerning
intangible political, social, and cultural turmoil plays
a central role in this conflict. DOK Leipzig offers a
platform of films from the most significant Ukrainian
and Russian directors, who each treat the topic of
the Russian/Ukrainian crisis differently. The
DOK Talk Special directors will discuss the question of
documentary film and its role beyond the level of
media war. Can documentary or art be critical within
this field?

The cowboy with the smoking Colt, the endless vastness
of plains and later of space, the Statue of Liberty,
‘Motherland of Democracy’ and ‘Melting Pot’ – America,
until the end of the twentieth century, presented
the formula for European policy and culture. From 9/11
on – until the NSA scandal – the image of pre-9/11
America crumbles and Edward Snowden enters the
world stage as the new American hero. Simultaneously,
the fascination for America seems unabated. It is
remarkable how many documentary films currently
emerge that delve into that myth. What does America
now have to tell us?

No filmmaker is an island
ARTE Case Studies
From a director’s first ideas to a film’s world
premiere, there are many partners involved in seeing
a creative documentary to completion. Local,
international, language, religious and cultural interests all have to be managed before you even
start thinking about budgets and revenue splits or
the requirements of your international broadcasting
partners. Long-time international collaborative
partner ARTE walks us through three recent
co-productions, exploring the production process
on a human scale, beyond the financing plan.
Experienced producers and commissioning editors
will share their stories and experiences in an
informal session on the pitfalls and successes of
European and international co-productions today.

Animadoc Case Studies
The Real Game!
How documentaries and games
can boost their potential
For the past 18 years, DOK Leipzig has been closely
following developments in animated documentary
filmmaking. The festival has been presenting
innovative ideas and projects in this area every year
in order to make professionals as well as the audience
aware of the great potential that lies in the combination of different techniques and genres. This year’s
panel on Animadoc presents case studies of
different outstanding projects: Signe Baumane’s
Rocks in My Pockets is a very personal film about
depression in her family from which mainly female
relatives suffered, probably due to repression.
This independent production was partly financed by
crowdfunding. The field of cross media also offers
a lot of potential. These projects surprise us because
of their high aesthetic quality and innovative use
of animation. Cuentos de Viejos is an outstanding animated factual TV series. Each episode has a
different design that beautifully reflects the diverse
stories, protagonists and places. In addition, the
feature film Last Hijack will also be discussed as part
of a larger cross media project.

After beginning to explore the possibilities of
transmedia, documentary filmmakers have started to
encounter the gaming world. What does this
development offer in terms of new production alliances, financing, and audience outreach? Where
are the challenges and risks? Two case studies will
put light on these questions.
Lise Saxtrup and Trine Laier (Klasse Film) present
Cosmic Top Secret, an autobiographical documentary
game on the amazing true story of T’s journey
into her family’s and her country’s secret past. It is a
playable documentary with puzzles, mini games
and webisodes produced for touch platforms
and the Web.
Georg Tschurtschenthaler and Onno Ehlers
(Gebrueder Beetz) will introduce The Vikings, a cross
media experience that gives new and compelling
insights into Viking culture. It uses multiple platforms
to address audiences of different ages and inspires
them through periods of history in a playful and
engaging way, combining a two-part docudrama, an
online game for children, and an exhibition
application.

Secrets from the Editing Room
Himmel oder Hölle?
Animierte Werbung Made in Germany
Where does the source of documentary magic bubble
from? Since recent technological developments
and a digital revolution of our industry, old workflows
have been turned on their heads, and the stages
of development, production and post-production have
begun to morph and change, redefining one
important professional relationship, that of the
director and editor. Together they must sort through
hours of footage and have an ability to work on
many different narrative structures or formats simultaneously, under the watch of funders and
producers each with different interests. We invite
our favorite editors to discuss their roles in film
production today, their recent films, and how they
see the future, featuring a brief keynote on
3D thinking by the moderator.
Panelists include Anne Fabini, editor of Return to
Homs (2013), More than Honey (2012) and Berlin Calling
(2008), Gesa Marten, editor and dramaturg,
whose film FEMMEFille is part of the DOK Leipzig
German Competition 2014, and Christoph Brunner,
the editor of In the Basement, the latest film
by Ulrich Seidl, competing in the International
Competition of DOK Leipzig.

Animation und Werbung, das ist ein „Match made
in Heaven“, denn der Umsetzung von Ideen sind
hierbei keine Grenzen gesetzt. In den Werbeblöcken
im deutschen Fernsehen finden sich oft animierte
Werbespots, darunter viele für deutsche Produkte.
Die Bandbreite reicht von nahezu unsichtbaren
CGI-Animationen bis hin zu kleinen künstlerischen
Kurzfilmen in verschiedenen Techniken.
Im Rahmen des diesjährigen Panels zur deutschen
Animation möchte DOK Leipzig gemeinsam mit
Gästen aus Agenturen, Produktionsfirmen und mit
Werbekunden die animierte Werbewelt in
Deutschland diskutieren. Es wird hinterfragt,
welche Rolle Werbung für die Animationsbranche
hierzulande spielt und wie sich kreative Ideen
mit Auftragsarbeiten für kommerzielle Kunden
vereinbaren lassen.
Im Anschluss findet ein Branchentreff der
AG Animationsfilm statt. Alle, die an der Arbeit des

zu bleiben.

Master Class
Chance oder Sondermüll?
Vom Umgang mit Archivmaterial
How i sense the world
Master Class with Jon Bang Carlsen
materiellen Wert. Wie lassen sich solche Bestände
dauerhaft sichern, erschließen und nutzbar machen?
Was ist archivwürdig und was kann weg? Welche
Archive kommen für unser Material in Frage? Welche
In ihrem diesjährigen Leipziger Panel

As one of Denmark’s most innovative and original
filmmakers, Jon Bang Carlsen is known for having
developed his own genre – the radical staged
documentary – creating films that shift between
documentary and fiction. He started his career in
the 1970s and, since then, has created more
than 40 works in various genres. His films often focus
on the daily lives and rituals of ordinary people.
He takes reality and interprets it by transforming his
protagonists’ stories into scripted dialogues and
directs them in acting out the stories from their own
lives. As Carlsen puts it, ‘My films are not the truth.
They are how I sense the world. Nothing more.’
Jon Bang Carlsen will outline his way of making
films accompanied by clips from some of his works
to illustrate his methods and principles. As well,
this year, DOK Leipzig has dedicated an homage to
the director that showcases a selection of key works
of his including Hotel of the Stars (1982), Phoenix
Bird (1984), Before the Guests Arrive (1986), It’s Now or
Never (1996) and How to Invent Reality (1996).

About the World of Sound
Master Class with Kristian E. Anderson
It’s all about the truth
Master Class with Jean-Gabriel Périot
As one of Denmark’s leading sound designers and
composers, Kristian E. Andersen looks back on more
than 20 years of work in film music and sound.
Andersen has worked as a sound designer on more
than 90 films and is renowned for the uniqueness
of his created atmospheres. He has worked on major
fiction productions with award winning directors
such as Lars von Trier (Antichrist, Melancholia,
Nymphomaniac), Thomas Vinterberg (Submarino,
The Hunt), and Nicolas Winding Refn (Only God
Forgives). As well, he has worked on many
independents and documentaries such as Blood in
the Mobile by Frank Piasecki Poulsen (2010),
The Weight of Elephants by Daniel Borgman (2012),
and Pawel Pawelinski’s Ida (2013). In recent
years, he has focused to a greater extent on the
role of film composer, receiving several awards for
his sound design and original scores. Andersen
will give insights into his way of combining music,
sound and visuals, opening up new perspectives
on how the world of sound can add innovative
dimensions to film works.

Ilo von Seckendorff,

Jean-Gabriel Périot is a master of visual deconstruction. For him, pictures are documents
that are implemented in the search for reality.
In his films he uses archive material, recordings
from television or from google maps, drawings
or photographs and puts them in new contexts.
He deliberately manipulates and stages in order
to provoke new perspectives. As a result, the films
become original works of art full of ‘missing
links’ between two pictures, provoking audiences
to re-think what they’re seeing.
Jean-Gabriel Périot will explain how he handles
the documents and the abundance of information
and about his approaches on the animation
of documentary material through manipulation,
editing and staging. There will be excerpts
from his short films shown as well as an excerpt
from a work in progress feature length film.
