ow, how did I get so lucky to have such a great Staff and Board of Directors?
I am grateful to have the support of these wonderful employees and volunteers.
Our Board of Directors all volunteer a portion of their time to the Chamber, to
support our local businesses, community, economy, and beyond. Our hard-working
and dedicated Staff help to keep the Chamber running and service our members
to make the most of their benefits. They also oversee our Visitors Center, where we
receive over 5,000 visitors each year. We provide information to tourists and locals,
and are open seven days a week.
The Windsor Chamber is all about moving forward... together. We are excited for

Award-Winning Education
Mattie
Washburn Elementary School is the cluster
kindergarten and first grade program for the district. It offers
an award-winning reading intervention program, a supportive
program for students called Mattie’s Playhouse, and full-day,
six-hour school day balancing the academic, social & emotional
needs of students. Mattie also offers a two year developmental
kindergarten program for younger students.
Windsor Creek Elementary has been named both a 2004 and
2010 California Distinguished School. Our site serves Windsor’s
second and third grade students. We are extremely proud of our
efforts to provide an exemplary academic program in language
arts, math, writing, science, and social studies. Students also
enjoy a safe and nurturing environment. We provide quality
enrichment programs in our iMac computer lab, physical
education, and our colorful remodeled library. Students have
beautiful butterfly nectar gardens and a greenhouse in which
to grow plants and vegetables. We celebrate our students’
achievements at monthly Award Assemblies designed to
encourage, motivate, reward and recognize all their hard work
and accomplishments.
Brooks Elementary, a 2006 and 2010 California Distinguished
School, is home to grades four and five and offers academic
success as well as personal enrichment through music, physical
education, a computer lab and library experiences. Due to a
generous endowment received in 2008, Brooks Elementary was
able to add $50,000 worth of books and materials to its library.
Students are honored for Academics and Citizenship at trimester
awards assemblies and participate in many enriching activities
such as Arts Day, Colony Day, Jam-a-thon, Living History Project,
Read Across America, and Chorus. You can’t hide that Brooks
Bobcat Pride!!
Windsor Middle School is blessed with one of the finest middle
school facilities in the North Bay region. The campus was built in
1997 and includes a full size gym, a large multi-purpose room,
a state-of-the-art library media center, a soccer/softball field
and is adjacent to a Boys and Girls Club and a spacious Town
of Windsor park with more play fields and tennis courts. The
Foothills Regional Park is a short walk from the campus and is
used regularly by our Physical Education teachers. The school
includes grades six through eight with approximately 900
students on campus. The school is well known for its exemplary
music program and many other innovative programs. It was
awarded the California Distinguished School award in 2001 and
2009, as well as the California Golden Bell Award in 2004.
Instructional Program
All students at WMS are provided with an enriched learning

program that goes beyond the core curriculum in language arts,
social studies, mathematics and science. Electives are offered
in the areas of art, intervention in reading and math, health,
Spanish, piano keyboarding, band, chorus and strings.
Cali Calmécac Language Academy is Windsor’s awardwinning, nationally recognized, Two-Way Bilingual Immersion
Program, began in 1986 as a single kindergarten class and has
continued to expand and thrive ever since. It currently provides
an incredible bilingual education to well over 1,000 students in
grades K-8. During their nine years at Cali Calmécac, students are
both bilingual and bi-literate, have completed the A-G Foreign
Language requirements for UC entrance and are ready to take
challenging AP classes in Spanish at the high school level.
Windsor High School (a California Distinguished School)
founded on a smaller learning communities philosophy offers
seven exceptional focus areas in digital media, pre-med, arts,
culinary, environmental science, humanities and advanced
placement. An outstanding music, visual/performing arts,
and athletic programs provide a well-rounded and rewarding
educational experience on a beautiful 25 acre campus.
Windsor Oaks Academy/WOA (a Model Alternative High School)
provides a high school alternative for Grades 10-12. Students
attend a direct instruction program with credit recovery options
built within the school day. Academic and career support is
available to students by the WOA counselor, a resource specialist,
and special programs. Windsor Oaks Academy has a long standing
relationship with the FARMS Leadership Program sponsored by
the Center for Land Based Learning and the Windsor Rotary Club’s
Career Exploration Program.
100 Best Communities for Young People
The Windsor Community with the Windsor Unified School
District has been selected as one of the 100 Best Communities for
Young People for 2012/13 by America’s Promise Alliance and ING.
Windsor was also selected as one of the 10 Best Communities
for Hispanic Young People by NBC and ranked #5 on that list.
The Community of Windsor was selected for this award from a
field of 350 other competitors based upon how well programs
and initiatives deliver the Five Promises that are critical to the
development of healthy, successful children. These Promises
are: caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, effective
education, and opportunities to help others. Windsor was also
judged on how effectively the community works together to
support children with innovative efforts and programs that
prepare young people to graduate from high school prepared
for college and the 21st century workforce.
History
The Windsor Historical Society was founded
in 1989 in order to foster and advance
collection and preservation of history and
historical artifacts relating to the Windsor
area, and to develop a place for the storage
and display of such historical items.

The museum opened in February of 2009 and
features exhibits on the people and events
that shaped Windsor’s history. Among the
permanent exhibits is the heroic story of Fred
Wiseman who built the first all-California
airplane, taught himself to fly, and then
delivered the world’s first airmail. Another
exhibit tells the story of German prisoners of
war that spent some of World War II in camps
in California, including one in Windsor.
In a dedicated gallery, the work of rancher,
inventor, horseshoe champion and artist
George Greeott is displayed. Mr. Greeott
has lived on his ranch near Windsor since
1928, and besides his stunning iron spike
figures and beautiful wood carvings has also
gathered a large collection of historic items
from his family’s past.
The Windsor Historical Society’s museum
is located in the historic “Hembree House”,
situated across the street from a majestic
row of cypress trees at 9225 Foxwood Drive.
The trees once lined the driveway to the
Cunningham Ranch and were planted by
Clara Hembree’s father, James McClelland,
on the occasion of her birth in 1872. Clara
Hembree’s grandfather, Robert Cunningham,
settled the homestead in the early 1850s.

Appealing To Every Taste and Preference
Lakewood Shopping Center – Found on Brooks Road South near the main
Windsor exit off of Highway 101, this center is divided into two retail clusters
anchored respectively by anchor food markets Safeway and Raley’s. This center
is home to the U.S. Post Office and four banks, two of which are inside the large
food markets. There is also a dry cleaner, drug store, jewelry store and a number of
beauty salons to explore.
Old Downtown Windsor – This name has been given to the Town Green
mixed use commercial and residential area between Windsor River Road and
Windsor Road on the west side of the freeway. The center is home to many dining
establishments offering Italian, Mexican, Vietnamese and Thai cuisine along with
other eateries featuring omelettes, breakfast and lunch menus and two coffee
shops. There is also a candy store, florist, book store, jewelry and gift store, bead
shop, bicycle center, pharmacy, an antique store, a food market and other fine
establishments.
While
most
communities
with
populations over 27,000 typically have
a single shopping district along a main
thoroughfare in town, Windsor has six retail
centers strategically located near major
neighborhoods within a three-mile area;
parking is available at all of these areas. In
all, Windsor is home to restaurants, spas,
salons, fitness and tanning centers, plus
a variety of boutiques and larger retailers
offering a wide range of merchandise. Here
is an overview of each commercial district:
Windsor Village – On Old Redwood
Highway near the intersection of Shiloh
Road on the east side of Windsor, this
center is home to a children’s clothing
store, wig salon, hair salon, massage spa,
landscape architect and other tenants.
Bonaventure Plaza
– Located at
the north side of Windsor along Old
Redwood Highway, this area is becoming
known as the automotive center of town
with an auto body shop, used parts lot, an auto repair center, a vehicle window
glass company, a truck repair center, a hardware, equipment rental center and a
landscape materials provider. The plaza itself is home to two Mexican markets and
a taqueria, café, pet shop and a public coin laundry center.
Shiloh Shopping Center – This highly
visible commercial area along Highway
101 at the intersection of Shiloh Road and
Hembree Lane boasts the largest stores in
town including anchor tenants Wal-Mart,
Home Depot and Office Depot -- as well
as numerous fast food restaurants and
additional retailers.
Windsor Palms Plaza
– Positioned
adjacent to Old Redwood Highway across
from the Mary Agatha Furth Center,
this plaza offers Mexican cuisine at
three restaurants and a market, a pizza
restaurant, an all American food restaurant,
donut shop, fitness & martial arts centers,
a medical clinic, as well as other fine
establishments.

The
Windsor Chamber of Commerce will award its Entrepreneurial Wings Scholarships during the April Chamber
Membership Luncheon program. The awards directly benefit Windsor Chamber members. Applicants must be a senior
graduating within the Windsor Unified School District and have one parent/legal guardian who owns or is employed by a
Windsor Chamber member business or be employed themselves by a member business.
The scholarships may assist with participation in four or two-year college programs, coursework in basic business skills, trades
or technical training programs, or certification and licensing programs.
The Entrepreneurial Wings Scholarship is supported by the Pacific Coast Air Museum’s Wings Over Wine Country Airshow, the
sale of Windsor Brandz products, and fundraising efforts of the Windsor Chamber Ambassador Team.
Anyone wishing to support the Scholarship Program with a donation should contact Chamber President and CEO, Christine
Tevini, at (707) 838-7285.
Applications are made available in December on the Windsor Chamber and Windsor High School websites. The application
deadline is March 14, 2014.
