Ohrwürmer in Brautkleidern
Singer-Songwriter und Produzent Axel Wolph legt mit seinen ”Wedding Songs“ ein furioses Soloalbum vor. Als Hochzeitsschmaus gibt es zwölf musikalische Geniestreiche, changierend zwischen
melancholischem Feingefühl und cooler, clubtauglicher Geste.
Nach seiner musikalischen Hochzeitsreise in den Staaten und einem erfolgreichen Club-Gig in
Los Angeles ist Axel Wolph wieder zurück in Wien. Mit im Gepäck des 28-jährigen Songwriters
befindet sich freilich auch sein jüngstes Baby: ”Wedding Songs“, eine so ernste wie ironische Platte
übers Heiraten, Beziehungskisten und allem was sonst zu Verhältnissen der intimeren Art dazugehört.
Dabei dreht der gebürtige Oberösterreicher die künstlerische Schraube in seinem zweiten Soloalbum, einem musikalischen Wunschkind sozusagen, gleich ein paar Windungen weiter.
Neben einer balladesken Analyse der physikalischen Gesetze der Liebe (”Gravity“) wird eine bitterböse Abrechnung mit dem Starsystem Hollywood (”Hollywood“) als Hochzeitsschmaus aufserviert. Schräge Beobachtungen aus Nachtclubs (”Mr. Undercover“) oder die These, dass Bücherlesen
einsam mache (”Literature Sucks“), werden mit Motownbeats und einem Gespür für eingängige
Melodien zu kleinen popmusikalischen Erzählungen verwoben. Reflexionen über Alltagsdramen,
die von DJ’s verkauft werden (”Man On The Mic“), reihen sich an zart ausbuchstabierte Gefühlsregungen (”In Your Hands“).
”Ich reflektiere mein Leben in meiner Musik, wie ein offenes Tagebuch für alle und jeden“, sagt der
ambitionierte Musiker Wolph, der bereits mit 17 Jahren mit seiner Grunge-Punk-Band ”Mindcure“
MTV-Aiplay bekam, sich seit dieser Zeit neuen Einflüssen geöffnet und ständig weiterentwickelt
hat - zuletzt als Mastermind der Adult-Pop-Band ”Ordinary World“. Auch für sein aktuelles Projekt
schöpft er aus dem Fundus seiner akribisch gesammelten (Selbst)Wahrnehmungen: So variantenreich die Themen, so breit gefächert ist das klangliche Spektrum zwischen Rock, Pop und Soul.
Dabei ist der Zugang Wolphs keineswegs ein allzu verkopfter. In den zu zwölf persönlichen Stimmungsbildern verdichteten Liedern, die im Sommer das Licht der Welt erblickt haben, wird gerade
mit dem Mittel der Reduktion Vielfalt geschaffen.
Im Alleingang in Wien aufgenommen und produziert, erweist sich ”Wedding Songs“ als hochemotionales Werk, das den Spagat zwischen melancholischem Ausdruck und cooler Geste schafft. Die
Songs basieren allesamt auf gesampeltem DJ-Material aus den 60ern und 70ern. Die Einflüsse von
John Lennon, Neil Young oder Kurt Cobain spiegeln sich vor allem in der Qualität des sublimen
Songwritings wider. Eine Hochzeit und zwölf Geniestreiche: Bittersüße, kalifornische oder wienerische Traurigkeit wird groovig, inmitten mörderischer Hooks und dreckiger Sounds inszeniert.
Das clubtaugliche Ergebnis ähnelt in gewisser Hinsicht dem klassischen Werbespot für Duracell
Batterien. Angetrieben von Wolphs künstlerischer Vision, gehen die Songs schon beim erstmaligen Hören ins Ohr. Dabei halten sie sich dort auch noch länger als andere.
Es gab eine Zeit, da hat man geheiratet weil ein Kind im Anmarsch war. Axel Wolphs Baby indes ist
eine Heirat und ihr eigener Soundtrack zugleich. Wolph hat die Hochzeit-Baby-Frage neu gestellt
und dabei auch gleich eine faszinierende ästhetische Antwort mitgeliefert.

A bonfire romance of the „Poet With A Punk‘s Heart“
„Oh, what a day, I will set it all on fire...“ heralds Axel Wolph in the first line of
„Poet With A Punk‘s Heart“, the title track of his brand-new solo-album. This time the self-described „romantic anarchist“ passed on almost every unnecessary musical element except himself and
a bunch of acoustic guitars. The result is an album as traditional, raw and touching as a singersongwriter record can be.
After his succès d‘estime with his critically acclaimed album „Wedding Songs“ (#2 CMJ charts in
Seattle, rotation on almost 90 radio stations in the USA,...) he now focuses on the real thing of a
songwriter‘s life - the song itself.
After compiling some private recordings of songs he had written between 2004 and 2007 as a birthday tape for his wife, he orginally wanted to produce them again by using old vinyl beats and his
so-called „multi-instrumentalist‘s overdubbing method“ (that‘s what he‘s usually doing on stage
- reproducing his tunes by playing and recording every single take live on stage), just like he did
on „Wedding Songs“.
Listening to this very personal song-compilation made him realize that this time this is all it takes.
Usually it takes weeks and months to get a record done - this time Axel releases his original recordings, his song sketches, most of them recorded right after he had finished writing.
The result is his very first and pure singer-songwriter album. But this is not the only premiere in
his career - for the first time he releases two coversongs: „Intervention“ by The Arcade Fire and
„Johnny & Mary“ by Robert Palmer. „I love fooling around with other songwriters‘ babies, that‘s
actually one of my favorite hobbies...“ admits Axel.
In times of technical perfection and almost unlimited production facilities the 29-year-old singersongwriter and producer gave his 60s and 70s influence a go and reanimated the tradition of the
probably most important era of pop music.
„The spirit of the 60s and 70s is settled in my soul, even though I was born in 79. To me it‘s the real
spirit of music“, says Axel and invites all „romantic anarchists“ out there to listen to and enjoy his
brand new „baby“.
The time has come to light up a bonfire somewhere out in the woods or on the beach or wherever
you feel comfortable and listen to the brand-new songs of the „Poet With A Punk‘s Heart“ - Axel
Wolph.
