Dear Neighbors
The Stratford Community Organizations Council is proud to bring
Stratford the Community Calendar for the 35th year. The Town has so
much to offer its residents and we have tried to put together in one
place a list of just of few of them.
The Stratford Community Council also hosts a website with updates and
new programs, www.scoconline.org. Please visit the site and learn
more until our January 2014 edition arrives at your door step.
The Town’s Park & Recreation Committee every five years develops a
Master Plan for the Town. They will be soliciting opinions in September
from the residents through an online survey on the Town’s website.
Please take a minute to complete the survey.
We would like to remind everyone they may find out more information
on government services by visiting the town’s website at www.townofstratford.com. The website also has links to various agencies in town
including the Library and the Board of Education.
Add to your calendar the dates for Celebrate Stratford 2013 found on
page 17. It includes the dates for the Hispanic Heritage Latin Music
Festival, Great Pumpkin Festival and the Holiday Lighting Festival.
This publication is offered to stimulate and encourage more participation and involvement in community activities so that together we will
make our town a better place to live and work. You will find it a handy
reference to keep as a reminder of what is going on in Stratford.

ABOUT STRATFORD CONTINUING EDUCATION
Stratford Continuing Education offers 2 programs:
• Mandated Courses which facilitate students earning a
high school diploma, American Citizenship, or
developing spoken and written English language skills.
(See page 4)
• General Interest Courses which include computer
skills, ballroom dancing, finance and a variety of other
topics. (see pages 6-9)

MANDATED CLASSES

The tuition fee is listed next to each course beginning on
page 6.
• Checks should be made payable to Stratford Continuing
Education.
• Stratford senior citizens (60 years of age and older) and
handicapped persons may pay 50% of the tuition.
• Non-resident senior citizens are subject to full tuition fees.
Refunds
THERE WILL BE NO REFUND OF THE TUITION FEE OR ANY
FRACTION OF THE SAME AFTER THE FIRST CLASS. IIf the
school cancels a course, the school will return the entire course
fee. If a student withdraws from a course prior to 24 hours
before the first class, the tuition fee less $10.00 (processing fee)
will be refunded upon written request. Please allow at least
one month for processing.
Course Cancellations
Classes may be cancelled for insufficient enrollment or for any
other reason deemed necessary by the Interim Administrator
of Continuing Education. Full tuition will be refunded when
classes are cancelled.
GENERAL INTEREST CLASSES
Registration is open to residents of all towns. You may
register up to 48 hours prior to class beginning, but
remember some classes fill quickly so try to register early.

You are enrolled in class unless contacted by the Continuing
Education Office. NO REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION WILL
BE MAILED TO YOU. If registering late, call to ensure the
class is still available as space is limited. In the event of a fullysubscribed class or a class cancellation, every attempt will be
made to notify you by phone. A waiting list for filled classes will
be maintained and calls will be made in sequential order if
openings become available.

PROCEDURE FOR MANDATED CLASSES
(not General Interest courses)
TO REGISTER: You must register in-person for ABE/GED,
American Citizenship, English as a Second Language (ESL), and
Credit Diploma Program. All of these courses are free of charge

Each registrant must provide proof of age (birth certificate,
passport, or CT ID), and two proofs of Stratford residency
(mortgage/lease/rent receipt and utility bill [electric, gas,
water, or oil bill], or a notarized Declaration of Residency).
•
CDP/GED registrants 17, or 18 years of age must also provide
proof of withdrawal from the previous high school.
Credit Diploma Program Registration
Credit Diploma registrants must provide an official transcript
(either faxed directly to Stratford Continuing Education or
mailed with school seal) and proof of withdrawal (for those 17,
or 18 years of age) from previous high school in order to
register for the Credit Diploma Program. Please send to
Stratford Continuing Education or fax to 203-386-3163.
New Students’ Appraisal testing (MANDATED CLASSES ONLY)
September 3 & 10, 6:00 pm, Stratford High School. Students
should arrive no later than 5:45 pm. No childcare is provided.
The Stratford Continuing Education Program is in compliance
with Connecticut Statues Sec. 10-71c and does not charge a
fee for any textbooks and materials used in the mandated
program areas.
STORM CANCELLATION POLICY: In general, during periods of
poor weather, if the daytime public schools are in session, the
Continuing Education Program will be in session. However, if
during the day, weather conditions change drastically, please
listen to WICC (60 AM), WEZN (FM) or CABLEVISION NEWS 12
between 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm for a school cancellation
announcement. Finally, if the day-school sessions are
CANCELLED, the Continuing Education classes for that night
are also cancelled, regardless of weather changes.

This course prepares a person to become a citizen of the United States. It
includes information about the history and government of the United States
and information regarding immigration and naturalization procedures

in English as a Second Language. Interested students should apply in the
regular manner for the Continuing Education program. New students are

English Language
Students with little knowledge of English will learn basic survival vocabulary which
will help them function in daily life. Holiday customs and work related skills will
be discussed. Placement is determined by English proficiency level testing.

Beginner Level II
Students with limited knowledge of English will learn basic conversation,
pronunciation, and grammar that will enable the student to function in a totally
English environment. The culture of the United States will be introduced.
Placement is determined by English proficiency level testing.

Students who have some knowledge of English are eligible for this course.
Students are taught functional English as they learn to complete job application
forms, shop wisely, complete medical history forms, avail themselves of services
of local governments and social service agencies, read newspapers, etc.
Improving reading and writing skills in English is continually stressed.
Placement is determined by English proficiency level testing.

Advanced
Students who have a basic knowledge of English structure and pronunciation
are eligible for this course. This course will focus on the use of English in the
job market. The students will learn and practice English related to their own
jobs and careers, helping them to become more productive workers. Listening,
speaking, reading, and writing are continually stressed and developed.
Adult High School
Completion Program
Stratford Continuing Education offers three routes to attain a high school
diploma: the Credit Diploma Program, the GED® (General Educational
Development) preparation program, and The National External Diploma Program.
Individuals who desire to enter a high school completion program will initially
meet with a school counselor in order to assess the program that best meets
their needs. You may call the Continuing Education office (203-385-4270) to
arrange for an appointment with a school counselor or you may see a school
counselor on any evening of registration. PROOF OF AGE AND PROOF OF
RESIDENCY MUST BE PROVIDED UPON REGISTRATION.
The CREDIT DIPLOMA PROGRAM offers credit courses in all required
subjects for graduation. This program encompasses grades 9 through 12. The
program is open to anyone over the age of 18 who has withdrawn from school,
wishes to complete his/her high school education, and wants to earn a high
school diploma from the Stratford Public School System. Students under the
age of 18 should contact the Continuing Education 0ffice to determine their
eligibility.

Adult Basic Education (ABE),
Basic Skills and General
Education Development (GED®)
Classes are held Monday –Thursday evenings from September 11, 2013 –
December 5, 2013.
ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE) Basic Skills:
English/Reading and Math
This free program is for adults who want to learn basic reading, writing, and
math skills. They will improve their academic/life skills and prepare to enter a
high school completion program such as GED® Preparation classes or the Credit
Diploma Program.
TUITION: FREE/11 WEEKS
GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT (GED®)
This program prepares students to pass the 5-part exam to earn a State of
Connecticut diploma. Students receive necessary instruction in each subject
area and can take practice GED® tests with their instructors. To register for the
GED® test, students must be of appropriate age and officially withdrawn from
school for 6 months or their 9th grade class must have graduated. The GED®
test is given monthly at locations throughout the state. Students can register at
Stratford Continuing Education to take the GED® test.

GED® TEST ACCOMMODATIONS
Accommodations on the GED® test are available for qualified individuals with a
disability. For more information, contact Maureen Wagner, Connecticut State

GED® TEST FEES
Students must apply in person approximately 6 weeks prior to the desired test
dates. Be sure to bring a photo ID. An applicant 21 years of age or older and a
non-veteran must pay an initial fee of $13.00 to take the test. The fee to retake
or reapply for the test is also $13.00. These fees include the cost of the diploma.
Only veterans and applicants under the age of 21 are exempt from fees.
(Veterans must have served at least 181 days of active duty at the time of registration.) All fees are non-refundable and must be paid at the time of registration. Fees should be paid in the form of a money order or certified check made
payable to Stratford Continuing Education.
The NATIONAL EXTERNAL DIPLOMA PROGRAM (NEDP) ) is a unique
opportunity designed for mature adults to earn a high school diploma. Adults
who have acquired high school level abilities through employment, home management, family and community experiences are best suited for this program.
It is a flexible, self-paced program for adults who can learn independently outside of a classroom and can demonstrate their knowledge and skills through
testing and independent written projects.

Erika Valentin
Oscar Brown
Erika Valentin addressed an
auditorium filled with family, friends, and guests on
May 9, 2013 at Stratford
High School. Along with
twenty-two other students
from Stratford Continuing
Education, Erika was there
to receive her high school
diploma. Four years ago,
the proud graduate could
not imagine sharing her
personal story with a

large audience.
During her senior year at Bunnell High School, Erika became
a single mother at the age of seventeen. The demands of school
and responsibilities of motherhood quickly took a toll on her.
Erika decided to put her education on hold to support her family.
That period of her life was a challenging time filled with uncertainty. Erika explained, “I failed on an epic scale. I was a single
parent with no income to support my child. I had no idea what
was to come of my future.”
When her son turned three years old, she knew completing
high school would provide a better future for her family.
Enrolling in Credit Diploma Program became the best option to
earn her high school diploma. She continued working during the
day while taking classes four nights a week in the program at
Stratford High School. Erika was a dedicated, motivated student
who achieved honors in the program numerous times. She served
as a positive role model for her peers, completing her credits in a
year and a half. She reminded her classmates to reflect upon their
journey, including their successes and failures. “Some failure in
life is inevitable,” she added. “I’m here to tell you, don’t let failure set you back.”
Her best friend, Teresa, also a student in the Credit Diploma
Program, provided encouragement every step of the way. She
also received support from family, friends, and the staff of
Stratford Continuing Education. Erika expressed special thanks to
her mother who remained committed to her daughter’s education,
but more importantly, remained committed to her.
Erika is a high school graduate with a bright future ahead.
She proved in spite of adverse circumstances, one can overcome
many obstacles. Her plans include working and continuing her
education at a local college. With her determination, courage
and perseverance, there is no doubt Erika will succeed in the path
she follows on her life’s journey.
Oscar Brown, originally from
Jamaica moved to the United
States in July 2012. In
Jamaica, Oscar attended a
prominent high school.
Although he was full of
potential and his aspirations
were high, he was faced with
challenges that were overwhelming. These challenges
prevented him from completing the one course that he
needed in order to graduate Oscar Brown
with his class.
After leaving high school, he quickly realized how very difficult
it was to obtain quality employment without a high school diploma.
Oscar did gain a position as a library aide. He was regularly
reminded that individuals holding higher ranking positions possessed a high school diploma.
Oscar became motivated, focused and determined to change his
situation by earning the educational credits that he needed in order
to be promoted. His determination paid off and he not only
received a promotion, but now he was also eligible to enter college.
College was a dream that he had his entire life, and now his dream
was about to become a reality.
Life took another turn, however, when Oscar decided to leave
Jamaica and move to the United States. Learning that he would
need an American high school diploma to enter college, Oscar
enrolled in Stratford Continuing Education’s GED® program. After a
few months of classes, he took the practice GED® test and did
exceptionally well. He was advised to take the official GED® test,
did so in December 2012, and passed it on his first attempt.
As a husband, a father figure and a responsible man, it is very
important to Oscar to personally convey the right message to his
family and friends: to be a helpful mentor, a positive role model,
and a strong male figure who will be there to support his family.
With this latest achievement, obtaining a high school diploma
from the State of Connecticut, Oscar realizes that countless new
opportunities are now open to him. He is able to enroll in college,
pursue a career in a field of interest, and to live the life of his
dreams. Oscar turned his setbacks into successes by staying
focused and making the most of the resources that were readily
available to him.

INTRO TO DRAWING: Learning to draw is an important basic skill
for any person. We will train your eyes’ vision as you create your own
“works of art.” Using charcoal and pencils, you will learn various techniques. Have fun and tap into your inner talents. Please bring to the first
class: a drawing pad, pencils #2H, HB, 2B, and a kneaded eraser. An additional supply list will be handed out in class.

KNIT, PURL 2 STITCHES: Knitting, the art of pulling loops of
yarn from one needle to another, has an ancient and fascinating history!
Did you know that the rhythmic repetition of hand knitting induces brain
waves similar to those achieved through meditation? It is calming, relaxing
& therapeutic. It is portable, too. You can take your work anywhere.
Class is opened to all knitters from beginner to advanced. We will learn
cast on, knit, purl, bind off techniques and sewing stitches to complete a
project. Garter, Stockingette and Basketweave stitch patterns are introduced through swatch work (small squares) to help you create your choice
of projects: a pair of wristwarmers, hat, scarf or a purse. Cable Design and
Lace Pattern swatch work for advanced knitters are included. Along the
way, many tips are provided to help you develop the confidence and skills
you only dreamed of. Materials fee for yarn and pair of needles is $10,
payable to instructor.

QUILT STAR TABLE TOPPER
(Beginner/Intermediate): This star quilt pattern can be
used either as a table topper or a small tree skirt. It is easy and quick to
make, so you can plan to make more than one – your friends and family
will surely want one too! We will be using 60 degree Diamond and
Pyramid rulers and also a Hexagon ruler. You can purchase these rulers.
The template patterns are included with the instructions. The fabric and
other supplies will be discussed in the first class. If you would like to see
the “Star Table Topper” please email me at [email protected]. T his
class is geared for beginners, but also for those of you who would like to
get started again in the quilting world. A sewing machine in recommended if it can be brought to class.

STAINED GLASS (Beginners & Intermediate): Do you
appreciate the beauty of stained glass? Please join us for a fun-filled
creative experience. Beginners will learn the basics by creating a sun
catcher to learn the fundamentals and then go on to create a beautiful
panel of their own choice. We will cover a brief history, types of glass,
pattern making, cutting techniques, soldering and framing. The use of
tools will be provided. Intermediate students will now challenge themselves to more complex patterns and improving their techniques. There is
a $20.00 material fee for board, frame, pins and zinc. Sun catcher materials
are included. Materials for finished panel are not included.

Computer Education
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY: Students in this five-session course
will learn to take better photographs, then edit, improve, modify, share,
and preserve them. We’ll cover the digital workflow, organizing files,
removing red-eye, and basic principles common to digital and conventional photography. There will be ample time for individual instruction and
improving digital photos taken by students. If you have a digital camera,
bring it to class, but it is not required. The instructor has experience in
photography and computers. PREREQUISITES: Familiarity with computers,
Introduction to Computers, or Introduction to Windows.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS: This course introduces
students to the basics, including computer terminology, hardware and
software, use of Windows, and creating, saving, and printing a simple
document. The goal is for students to become comfortable using the
latest technology through a hands-on approach with personal attention.

INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERNET: This course is intended for the beginning Internet user who has familiarity with computer
basics or has completed Introduction to Computers. Students will learn

MICROSOFT EXCEL 2010 BASICS: There will be an introduction to the Stratford network and Office Excel 2010 functions.
Computerized spreadsheets allow you to organize information in rows
and tables (which create cells), with the added bonus of automatic
mathematics. Excel will keep track of numbers you place in cells, and if
you define cells to refer to each other, any changes made in one cell will
be reflected in these referring cells. You'll learn to create a spreadsheet,
basic Excel workbook skills, work with cells, enter and manipulate data,
apply formulas, format data, create and work with charts, and manage
Excel workbooks. Excel features, including, tool bar, autosum, autofill,
shortcut menus, and best fit will be taught. Analytical tools for viewing
and analyzing data, along with graphic tools will be introduced. Other
techniques, such as, working with ranges, using functions in formulas,
creating and printing charts and graphs will be covered. There are many
uses for Excel: Creating financial reports and preparing budgets, analyzing
data, statistical analysis, student performance, computerized checkbook or
grade book and managing investment portfolios. There will be the opportunity for participants to study more advanced MS Excel topics, covered in

an introduction to the Stratford network and Office PowerPoint 2010
functions. PowerPoint is a powerful program that allows you to produce
professional-looking multimedia presentations. This course will give you
the skills that you can apply in an office. You will be producing professional presentations and hand outs and learning the important PowerPoint
features. Color, sound and pictures will be added to your presentation.
You will get an overview of PowerPoint as well as using the Wizard, work-
ing in outline view, Master Slides, slide show, manipulating, changing,
enhancing and the creation of graphic objects including use of the drawing tool. You will also learn to enhance bar charts, create line/pie charts as
used in business, and the creation and editing of double charts (double
bullet, bullet/bar, bar/graphic, etc.) You will learn the basic use of graphics,
backgrounds, and various styles to keep the audience’s attention.

will cover the fundamentals of word processing, formatting text to
enhance your documents. Students will learn how to: Create a document,
save a document, auto correct, spell check, use the thesaurus, grammar
check, letter creation, undo, redo, insert and delete text, page layout, and
fonts, and formatting and editing documents. Additional topics covered:
Multiple pages, headers, footers, page numbers, the find/replace function,
outlining, graphics, word art, tables, drawing tools, and creating a flyer
using boxes. Other applications will include use of word tables to
produce documents, such as, flyers, and newsletters. Mail merge will be
used to produce form letters, envelopes, labels and numbered tickets.

INTRODUCTION TO THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE:
Better known in England over the last 100 years, the Alexander Technique
gives us a means of improving our posture and energy level in our daily lives.
By becoming aware of and changing habits that unconsciously work against
our ease and poise, we can function more freely and happily. A study
published in the British Medical Journal in 2008 has proven the Alexander
Technique to be the most effective method for the long-term treatment of
back pain. In this class we will explore everyday movements such as sitting,
standing, walking, bending and reaching and address activities such as working at a computer and sleeping. Limited to the first 8 people.

SELF DEFENSE FOR WOMEN:
• Nearly 1 in 5 women has been sexually assaulted at some time in her life.
• 1 in 4 women has been a victim of severe physical violence.
• In 2012, the Stratford Police Department investigated 23 REPORTED rapes
or sexual assaults.
This is a hand-to-hand combat defensive tactics system that is specific to the
needs and abilities of women, known as Right Reaction Women’s Defense
System. This will prepare women for REALISTIC street encounters with
REALISTIC solutions. This is not a martial arts class. It is a self-defense course
aimed at situational awareness using empty-handed and unarmed fighting
techniques designed specifically for women. This course will consist of
lecture, discussion, physical strategies, some physical conditioning, and a
dynamic way to understand body mechanics. The course is taught by State
Law Enforcement Instructor Martin W. Chisholm.

Gardner wrote in his seminal craft book The Art of Fiction, “fiction
does its work by creating a dream in the reader’s mind.” The writer
sustains that dream through the imaginative use of craft as he or she
creates setting, character, plot, and theme. This course is designed for
both the novice and experienced writer to help them develop and refine
their craft as fiction writers. Writers can bring in existing work or generate

This is a comprehensive course in driver education. The course
consists of thirty hours of interactive classroom experience of
which eight hours are devoted to the mandatory Safe Driving
Practice which covers the drug and alcohol awareness component.
All applicants must be high school students. Stratford residents
receive priority with their applications. Students must be sixteen
years of age by the first session. They must attend at least fifteen
two-hour sessions. A parent/guardian will be required by State Law
to attend one two-hour session on October 24. Parents’ Night cannot be made up. This course does not include on the road instruction. All Stratford High and Bunnell High school students must register in the main office of their schools. Any Stratford residents
who attend private area high schools are to register by calling the
Continuing Education office. The course fee is $100.00 and is
payable at the time of registration by cash or Money Order only.

Licensed after school enrichment
program for youth in grades kindergarten
through sixth grade. Children in the
program receive on site tutoring and homework assistance, basic computer instruction
as well as other educational and recreational
activities and field trips. K-6 follows the
Stratford Public School calendar and
operates Monday through Friday from
3-6pm. The fee is $240 per month. Limited
transportation offered from Honeyspot,
Johnson Academy, Franklin, Nichols and
Wilcoxson Schools. Enrollment ongoing
limited spaces available. Program runs
September 3, 2013–June 17, 2014. We are a
Care for Kids provider.

Vacation Day Camp:
Columbus Day – October 14
The vacation day camp is for youth ages
5-12. Children will take part in educational,
fun and recreational games and activities
throughout the day from 9am-4pm at the
South End Community Center. The theme
for this vacation day program is “Let’s Get
Physical”. The cost for this program is $35
with extended day being offered in the PM
from area agencies to receive merchandise
from the Coat Closet. Collaborations have
been made with area agencies and businesses
to assist us in gathering coats and other items
needed for the coat closet. New or slightly

The South End Community Center offers
emergency food pantry services to Stratford
Residents on Wednesdays from 9:00

Stratford residency. Emergency food services are also available for those individuals

with an agency referral regardless of
residency. Non perishable canned goods

Department of Nursing will be offering free
blood pressure screenings on Wednesday,

For students “staying after” school at CLASP or FLASH, it
means opportunity. Students make new friends, challenge
themselves through fun and exciting learning activities and
experience success Tuesday through Friday from 2:45–5:45 pm
And that’s not all! FLASH and CLASP also offer evening and
weekend activities for the entire family such as field trips and
movie nights.
Sponsored by the Stratford Public Schools in cooperation with the Town of Stratford
Community Services, FLASH and CLASP are funded by the State of Connecticut
Department of Education and nominal participation fees. A daily snack and bus
transportation home are also provided.

We are blessed to live in Stratford – a town with so much to offer residents from all walks of
life. There’s always something happening here, so please accept this Community Calendar
on behalf of myself and the Town Council to keep you informed of scheduled events and
services for our community.
By working together and taking pride in our town, we can maintain and even enhance the
quality of life for which Stratford is known. I look forward to listening and learning from all of
you in order to confront the challenges ahead.
Stratford is fortunate to have lots of things to do throughout the year. Many great events have
taken place in 2013: The Main Street Festival in early June; Summer concerts at Paradise
Green; a successful Fireworks show; Blues on the Beach, and Festival! Stratford in July.
Some more events on tap this year include the Latin Music Festival on September 15; the
Pumpkin Festival in October 19, and the Holiday Festival on December 3.

The Town of Stratford started
single stream recycling on
July 1, 2011.
This means you will no longer need to separate
items to be recycled. All acceptable recycling
can be mixed together in one container. Due to
the anticipated increase in recycling, residents
can now use refuse cans, no larger than 32
gallons, for their recycling. The can must be
identified as RECYCLING with some type of
marking so crews can identify the contents.
Cardboard will now be collected curbside but
must be flattened so as not to take up too much
room in the collection truck. There are several
additional items which can be collected: #1
thru #7 plastics under three (3) gallons in size,
milk and juice cartons, empty aerosol cans and
boxboard such as cereal boxes. Check the
Town of Stratford web site or call the Public
Works Department at 203-385-4080 for
additional information.

The Friends of Boothe Park, Inc.

ACTIVITY PROGRAM
Stratford Senior Services offers a specialized Social Model Adult Activity
Program for seniors who need support and structure to safely attend the
Baldwin Center. C.A.R.E.S. focuses on abilities, seeking either to restore
or maintain each participant’s optimum level of social and recreational
functioning.
Admission into the C.A.R.E.S. Program is determined by staff
intake assessment and observations in adherence to program goals and

COMPUTER LAB UPDATE
Baldwin Center offers a variety of computer classes for beginners to
advanced students. Classes are small with plenty of opportunity for

Volunteer Information for Teens and Adults
The Stratford Recreation Department is always looking for youth interested in volunteering. We accept teens in or entering grades 8-12 and adults. Our department offers
a variety of programs both during the school year and summer that can utilize youth
volunteers. Opportunities can involve after school sports, learning programs and
special events throughout the year. We offer our volunteers First Aid &CPR training
4-H Program
4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. The program is open to boys and girls ages 818. The club meets on Wednesdays from 6-7pm at the Birdseye Complex. The
fee is $5 fee with some additional cost related to the programs and activities.
The first meeting is September 11 with registration August 26-September 6.
Art From Forest to Shore
Come and create art pieces with various mediums of art such as charcoal,
paint and use different techniques to create artwork based on our town’s
natural resources. Classes will be held at Short Beach, Long Beach, Boothe
Park and Roosevelt Forest and is for children in grades 1-6. Fee is $55 per
child for 6 weeks, which includes supplies. Class time and day will be
announced mid-August.

Noggin Joggin Saturday Academy: Science Made Fun
For those of you who want more time to build and explore, more challenges,
and investigate new challenges, this is the class for you. All sessions are
focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts. A
healthy snack and water will be provided. If your child has allergies please
have your child bring their own snack. Open to grades 2-6.
The class meets on Saturday at the Birdseye Complex from 9-11:30 am
October 12-November 23. The cost is $160 for the five sessions. Registration

Meet the Artist Carolyn West Art Classes

in conjunction with the Stratford Recreation Department. Canvas, acrylic, clay,

Canine Manners Classes
The Stratford Recreation Department has contracted with The Refined Canine,
LLC to offer the following classes at the Birdseye Municipal Complex. Classes
are taught or supervised by Michelle Douglas, Certified Professional Dog
Trainer (CPDT-KA) and Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC). All Classes (Except
Dogs & Storks™) are held once per week for 7 weeks. The class fee for 2013 is:
$92 for Stratford residents, $97 for non-residents. Please do not bring your
puppy/dog to the first class. For more information, please contact The Refined

September 10 and 11, November 5 and 6, 2013. For 2014 the class schedule is

Puppy Social Skills Class

For puppies 10 weeks to 5 months old as of the start date. This class,
is the only one in the area which is based on Dr. Ian Dunbar's Sirius
Puppy Training program. Largely off-leash, puppies learn and practice
impulse control and bite-inhibition through interactions with people
and other puppies. Curriculum includes setting clear house rules, dealing
with common puppy issues and preventing behavior problems. Topics may
include: house training, chewing, appropriate play, mouthing, staying home
alone, greeting people, handling, gentling, sit, down, and come. Set your
puppy off on the right paw! Class runs on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30 pm.
Basic Canine Life Skills Class:

For puppies and dogs 6-months old and up. This is a beginner level course,
which strengthens the relationship between owners and dogs by creating a
common language while setting a foundation for all future learning.
Instruction in the basic skills: attention, heel, sit, down, stay, and come, with
a strong focus on good manners for the family pet. This class also addresses
common problems such as barking, chewing, jumping, and appropriate play.
Class meets Tuesdays 7:45-8:45 pm OR Wednesdays 6:30-7:30 pm.
Intermediate Refined Canine Class:

For dogs who have completed a Basic Life Skills course and are familiar with
the basic skills. Distractions and proofing techniques are added slowly, with a
goal of introducing the dog/owner team to working off-leash. This class is
structured to be fun for both the owners and the dogs, utilizing exercises from
the AKC Canine Good Citizen test, as well as games, tricks, and competitions
for prizes. This class is an excellent preparation for the CGC exam. Class runs
on Wednesdays from 7:45-8:45 pm.
Adult Tennis Lessons

Adult lessons start on Tuesdays, September 10-October 15 at the Flood
Tennis Courts. They will meet from 6:05-7:05 pm for beginners/advanced
beginners and 7:05-8:05 pm for Low Intermediate/Intermediate. Cost is $99 for
six weeks. Registration begins August 12–September 6. There must be six
people registered for each class to be held.
Special Discount Ticket Programs:
The Recreation Department is selling discount movie tickets for

Stratford Community Concert Band
The Stratford Community Concert Band was founded in 1961, providing area
musicians of all ages and skill levels with a place to rehearse and perform
together. Current members range in age from middle-schoolers to middleagers, to seniors, and represent a wide variety of professions. The common
bond has always been a love of music.
The band performs annual gazebo concerts on Paradise Green, along with a
Holiday concert, with occasional other engagements as they arise.
There are no auditions for membership and there are no fees for music or
rehearsals. The only requirements for continuing membership are average
performing ability on a standard band instrument and reasonable regularity in
attending rehearsals. Band meets at Stratford High School from 7:30-9:30pm
Tuesday evenings.

Youth Tumbling and Cheer

Art and the Artists Program

Budding Artists is art for children ages 2-3 with a caregiver. The children will

Intermediate level six-week basketball and life skills program for youth who
have already completed Drills I and are ready to move to the next level of
basketball instruction. This program will offer more intense drills and scrimmages for participants applying the life skills learned in Drills I to the game of
basketball. This program will be offered on Wednesdays at the Birdseye
Complex from 6:00-7:15 pm starting September 18–October 23. Registration
begins August 26-September 14. Fee for this program is $30 for six weeks.

Noggin Joggin Engineering Made Fun!

Noggin Joggin’ Academy’s Lego Engineering series provides a full range of
exposure and explorations of building, engineering and problem solving. All
sessions are focused on STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)
concepts. Returning students will not be bored! We are committed to provid-
ing new and exciting learning experiences for all students. New and returning.
Session 1-Tuesday at Johnson Academy September 17-October 15 for grades
1-6 from 3:30-4:30 pm. Registration is August 27-September 14. Fee is $75.
Girls Basketball League

The primary focus of the league is to promote fair play, sportsmanship, and
increase the skill level of the girls who play in the league. The league has
three divisions: grades 3 & 4, grades 5 & 6 and grades 7-9. Registration begins
September 10-November 16 with a fee of $85. A clinic will be scheduled for
Saturday November 16 at 10:30–12:30 pm at Birdseye Complex. Grades 3 & 4
will play games on Friday evenings and grades 5 thru 9 will play on Friday
nights or Saturday mornings. Games will be played at the Birdseye Complex
Gymnasium or Second Hill Lane. Program begins in December with team
practices and will run through mid-March. Teams will practice one day during
week, schedule permitting. If you coached last year please contact the
Recreation Dept. if you plan on coming back. Those interested in
volunteering to coach should also contact the Recreation Office.
Shooting Stars Basketball for girls in grades K-2

Girls will work together to learn the skills of basketball. Instructor will show
participants the basics of basketball through drills, skills and fun games.
Program will be at the Birdseye Complex on Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00 pm
beginning November 6 (no class November 27) and the fee is $40 for 6 weeks.
Registration is October 15-November 1.
Hot Shot Finals Basketball Contest

The Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Connecticut Recreation
and Parks Association, will sponsor the Hot Shot Finals Contest for boys and
girls ages 9-15. The winners will advance to the State levels of competition.
Each player will have one minute to shoot from the “hotspots” placed on the
basketball court. Starting at half court, the players dribble into shooting range
and shoot from the designated spots. The total of three one-minute rounds is
added together. The contest challenges a player’s speed, shooting, dribbling
and rebounding ability. The divisions are based on each child’s age before
December 31, 2013. A birth certificate will be required in order to participate.
There is no fee for this event, but participants must be registered. The event
will take place on Friday January 3, 2014 at Birdseye Complex from 6-8 pm.
Theater Workshop

The Theatre Workshop is designed to encourage the development of
theatre skills, such as acting, dancing, scripts, character building and
the enjoyment of performing arts in young performers. The workshops
offer an opportunity for children to participate in a session ending with a
mini “show”. Classes are for youth in grades 2-6. The program will begin
January 27 for 8 weeks at a fee of $50. Class is held at the Birdseye Complex
from 5:00-6:00pm on Mondays.
Karate Program

The Birdseye Complex Recreation Center will be open Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday from 3:30-5:00 pm for grades 3-6 and 4:30-5:45pm for
grades 7-8 with a variety of activities scheduled in the game room, cafeteria
and gym. The center will open the week of September 23.
Registration starts August 26 and is ongoing throughout the school year.
This is a free program offered by the Recreation Department. When there is a
half-day of school or no school the program is closed. The program may close
due to the weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Children are free to
leave on their own at anytime.
There is no after school on these dates: October 29, November 5, 7, 27, 28,
29, December 20-January 1.
Special Trips are open to anyone who is a registered member of the
Birdseye After School. Most trips are on Saturdays for a fee to be announced.

The program starts on November 11 and will be from 3:15 pm–4:30 pm
Monday-Thursday. Children will have the opportunity to do homework, as
well as activities such as games, crafts and special events. Children will meet
in the gymnasium. There is no afterschool program when schools close due
to inclement weather or on scheduled half days. Register online at

Short Beach Park. This is a free program and children must be registered prior
to attending. They are also free to leave on their own at anytime from 3:15 pm
4:30 pm once they sign out. There is no after school program on the following

Skateboard Lessons

Skating lessons will be taught be a Semi-Pro skater at Short Beach Skate Park,
for ages 7 and up. Lessons will include proper stretching and warm-ups, park
awareness, skateboard handling and safety.
Beginner will promote proper form and posture, stopping, curbs
and tic taks. Intermediate will go into more advanced tricks, which
may include kick turns, carve, grinds, drop ins, axle tails, ollies,
stalls and tail tops Class held from 4:00-5:00 pm on Mondays.
Fee is $75 for 6 weeks. Classes begin September 23. Registration is
September 3-18.

Birthday Parties
Stratford Recreation Department offers a variety of themed birthday
parties. Contact us so we can make your child’s party as unique and
special as they are.
Set up for parties is 15 minutes prior to the start. Cafeteria time is 45
minutes. Call the Recreation Office for reservations and complete
details. Birthday parties are held on Saturdays and select Friday
evenings.
Toddler Birthday Parties

Birdseye Complex. Cost is $100 for 16 kids. An additional 10 children may be
added for $35. Parent participation is encouraged and helpful.
Karate Birthday Parties
The parties are held on Saturdays at 11or 1 pm at Flood School. The cost is
$75 for 1 ½ hr party for up to 20 children. Call the Recreation Office for reservations and to set up dates and times. A certified instructor offers program.
Flood Pool Parties
These are held on Saturdays during open swims from 2-3 pm or 3-4 pm. Cost
is $35 plus $1.00 per child. If the party has more than 20 kids, an additional
fee for an extra lifeguard is $35. An adult must accompany children who cannot swim. Party is 1 hour in pool and 45 minutes in café.
Gym/Sport Parties
We offer a fun and exciting way to celebrate your child’s birthday, with our
sport themed parties. Let us organize your unique party with a choice of
sport or activity. Some examples are soccer, kickball, basketball, dodge ball,
volleyball, capture the flag and relay races. These private parties are held at
the Birdseye Complex on Saturdays. Games and activities will be for 1 hour,
and 45 minutes for the party portion in the cafeteria. There is no double
booking. Fee for party is $100 for up to 19 children. An additional 10 children
may be added for an additional fee of $35. Gym/Sport Parties are for children
ages 5-12.
Dance Parties
Dance your way into an enjoyable party with our dance staff. Parties will
include 45 minutes of dance and movement and 45 minutes in the cafeteria.
Wonderful for children ages 5-9. They may choose jazz, ballet or hip-hop. Cost
is $100 for up to 12 children.
Cheer/Tumbling Parties
Two, four, six, eight. This party will be really great! Children will participate in
learning cheers and basic tumbling skills. Parties include 45 minutes of
instruction and 45 minutes of party room time. Cost is $100 for up to 12
children, ages 4-7. An additional 8 kids may be added for a $35 fee. Parties
held at Birdseye Complex or Flood on Saturdays.
Miniature Train Museum Parties

These Birthday Parties are held at the Miniature Train Museum at Boothe
Memorial Park. They are held only in the Spring, Summer and Fall. The group
will tour the museum from 2-3 pm and the party portion will be held at a
picnic pavilion or hall 3-3:45 pm. The fee is $90. Parties are limited to
20 children.

Moonbounce Party
Bounce into fun at our newest party theme. This private party features
an inflatable moonbounce along with open gym time. The bouncing and
activities will be held for 1 hour and cafe time is 45 minutes. Parties are held
at the Birdseye Complex on Saturdays. Cost is $130 for up to 19 kids.
Additional 10 children may be added for $35. Great for kids ages 2-11.
Skateboard Birthday Parties
These parties feature a combination of open skate and instructional time.
Instructions will include proper stretching techniques; park awareness, skills
and tricks based upon age and ability of participants. A Semi Pro skater runs
the parties. Helmets are required for participants and safety equipment is
optional but encouraged. Fee is $100 for up to 12 kids. Held at Short
Beach Skate Park/Pavilion from 10:00am-11:45 am on Saturdays.
Zumba Parties
Zumba Parties are an exciting way to celebrate your child’s birthday, for ages
4-12. Children will participate in the Zumba dance/workout to music for 45
minutes then use the café for 45 minutes. Cost is $100 for up to 16 kids. An
additional 10 kids may be added for $35 fee.
Gymnastic Parties
Party includes stretching, balance, tumbling and lots of fun and excitement.
The fee is $100. The maximum number of children is 12 for ages 4-9. An
additional 8 children may be added for a $35 fee. These parties are held on
Saturdays. There is 45 minutes of instruction and 45 minutes of party cafe
time.

There is a $5 charge for registering at the first class. Program fees must
accompany all registrations. All registrations will be accepted on a first come,

Aquarobics

Aquarobics, a low impact class will be held on Monday and Wednesday
nights at Flood Pool from 8:00 pm–8:45 pm beginning September 23–
November 20. There are 16 classes, with registration beginning September 3–
September 21. Class size is limited. Fee is $65 for sixteen classes. The
second session begins December 2, 2013 thru February 10, 2014 with
registration beginning November 13–30, 2013. Drop In rate is $10 per class.
Therapeutic Swim
This program is cancelled if school is cancelled. If school is delayed this
program is cancelled.
The therapeutic swim is Wednesday and Friday mornings at the Ella Grasso
Center for Stratford residents only from 10:30-11:30 am and 11:30 am-12:30
pm. Swimmers must have a doctor’s note and clearance to swim. Swim passes good for ten swims are available at the Recreation Office for $10. Program
is closed August 28, 30, September 4 and starts again September 6. Call the
office for more information.
Listen to WICC or call 385-4129 for weather cancellations. A decision on programs will be made by 5:00 PM
place in the program early registration is suggested. The Recreation
Department does not call to confirm registration. We will only call if the
program does not run. Please bring your receipt to the first class. In some
cases, late registration will be accepted if space is still available; however,
program fees are not pro-rated. Persons registering late must pay the full
registration fee. There is a $5 non-resident fee for classes that accept nonresidents. The Department reserves the right to cancel, postpone or change
classes. Telephone registration is not accepted.
Programs Open to Everyone
Any individual with a disability is welcome to enjoy the programs offered by
the Recreation Department. Anyone who needs special assistance to participate in the programs should contact the Recreation Office.
Scholarships & Discounts
Senior Citizen Discount for those 62 and older is 50% for most programs.
Scholarships are available for some programs with a 25% deposit. Just complete the application at the Recreation Department office at Short Beach.
Please submit your most current income tax return form. For all other programs, forms must be received at least 4 weeks before the program. Family
rates for multiple classes, and second and third child discounts are also available for some programs. Discount rates are for siblings in the same family.
Refund Policy
The Recreation Department will refund money only when:
1. The department cancels the class
2. A medical excuse is obtained
3. The participant has taken only the first class
4. A replacement is obtained
All other refunds will be pro rated less a $10 administrative fee will be
charged per program. Refunds will be received approximately 2 weeks after
notification.
Cancelled Checks
Returned checks will be charged a $15 fee. Payment must be made within 3
days of notification by cash, money order or credit card.
Medical Insurance
The Town of Stratford is self insured and has liability insurance but does not
carry accident insurance for participants. Personal health and accident
insurance is recommended. All participants must sign the Waiver form before
participating in our programs. For those under the age of 18 a parental
signature is required. Please make the staff aware of any allergies or medical
conditions at registration.

Photo Policy

www.quickscores.com/stratford for a listing of all cancellations. Flood Pool
will be cancelled during thunderstorms for 45 minutes after the last sound of
thunder. Programs may be cancelled if the minimum class requirement is not
met. Refunds in full will be made for these programs. If school is cancelled,
preschool, and toddler classes as well as the Ella Grasso Therapeutic Swim
are cancelled. If school is delayed, morning classes and programs are
cancelled but classes beginning at noon or later will take place as long as
weather conditions permit. If schools have early dismissal, am classes will be
held but classes at noon or later will be cancelled.
Any photographs taken of any participants of the Stratford
Recreation Department programs or activities may be used for
publications or advertising materials such as brochures and
flyers. Any participant not wishing to have a photograph of them must inform
the Recreation Department at registration.
Cancellation Policy
A decision on evening program cancellations will be made at 5:00 pm. Listen

Town Hall. Applicants must return their application to the Human Resources
Dept. Applicants should be Stratford residents and 18 years of age. The
Department is always looking for qualified volunteers to officiate, umpire,
teach swimming, or donate their expertise in any program. All volunteers
must complete an application available at the Recreation Dept and present
the physical form supplied by the Town completed by their own doctor to the
Recreation Dept.
