amazing, the only thing that slows me down is

The only thing better for the purpose is the Super 1050
reloader, which has the primer pocket swager built in!
just received your September 2012 Blue Press and read
the shooting tip. As I am a disabled vet with only one
hand, I found this tip on clearing a double feed VERY
helpful. I’ll be practicing this routine often. In the past I
have struggled with clearing a double feed. I believe this
tip will help considerably. Thank you.

qualify Marksman at the IDPA qualifier on Saturday.
Many thanks to Duane Thomas for his tips. This was my
fourth try in two years. I shot 40 points better than at any
of the other matches! Would have done better except for
mental errors on my part. Especially helpful: anchor nonshooting arm when shooting one handed, let recoil set
gun on next target, and snap your eyes to the next target.

Master trainer Clint Smith once remarked,
“Your carry gun should be comforting, not comfortable.” For those of us who find it comfortable
to carry a small .380 auto or .38 snubby, this is not
a comforting statement. It is, however, gospel. And
it does give some serious motivation to those of us
who always carry, to at least gain some proficiency with the larger handgun calibers and the larger
handguns that go with them.
For many years, America’s favorite large carry
gun has been the Model 1911 .45. Like many
males my age, my first experience with that pistol was in the Army. It was a serious disappointment. I had been told, for years, “That Army .45
is a horrendous kicker; it will knock you on your
ass!” I braced myself for my first shot, and
squeezed the trigger. My first reaction was, “That
was it?!” My coach said, “Eight ring at 10
o’clock.” This was not quite the rite of passage
that I thought it would be.
Since that first exposure, I’ve had an enjoyable
relationship with the .45 ACP. And I’ve owned a
lot of pistols, and revolvers, in that caliber. At the
2012 SHOT Show, I stopped by the CZ-USA
booth. They always have lots of neat stuff, and this
year was no exception. I spotted one handgun that
seemed like it might be the best of all possible
worlds, the CZ 97B. This is basically a CZ 75, but
larger and chambered for .45 ACP. I’ve had a CZ
75 for years. Great gun with super ergonomics,
but I’d prefer something with a bit more authority
than a 9mm Parabellum. The CZ 97B is just that. It
does everything that the CZ 75 does, just bigger
and louder. I handed over a copy of my FFL and
requested a sample for review.
It took a few months to get the CZ 97B. Early
on, there had been some feeding issues with
“flying ashtray” type hollow points, but the CZ
people got it ironed out. I opened the box, and
my first reaction was, “Gawd, that is BIG!” Actually, the CZ 97B is about 1/4” shorter than a

1911, 1/8” thicker, and one ounce heavier. It has
a 10-round, double-column magazine, so the
grip is thicker, more like the double-column
Paras. The slide rides inside the frame rails,
which makes for a bit more bulk than the 1911.
The gun has an even matte black polycoat finish
with checkered wood grips. The sights have three
illuminated dots and are square and quite clear.
The rear sight projects up high enough so you
could hook it into your belt and cock back the
slide one-handed. Like the CZ 75, this is a conventional double-action on the first shot, singleaction on following shots system, which can be
carried cocked and locked. There is an ingenious
spring-loaded pin that pops up to indicate a cartridge in the chamber. Takedown for cleaning is
quite similar to that of the 1911.
At the range, the first cartridges I tried were
Federal 230-grain Hydra-Shoks, just to see if the
gun would function well with jacketed hollow
points. No problems whatsoever. Same with a box
of 1960s-issue G.I. ball ammo, Winchester 185grain Silvertip HPs and some 230-grain copperplated RN reloads. Shooting the 97B is a very
pleasant experience. It’s not the least bit fussy
about your ammo selection. I would suspect,
though, that lightweight lead wadcutters would
not be appropriate. The single-action trigger pull is
a bit less than six pounds, but is smooth and feels
lighter. Even though I don’t have a large hand, I
had no problem when I tried the initial doubleaction trigger pull. I find the weight (48.5 ounces,
fully loaded) contributes to a more steady hold,
and I was quite happy with my offhand groups.
This is a gun that I intend to shoot quite often.
At an MSRP of $686, the CZ 97B is a whole
lot of gun for the money. It’s beautifully built,
and strong as an anvil. It comes in a lockable
hardcase, along with the obligatory cable lock, a
barrel bushing wrench and a mercifully brief but
clear instruction manual. If you’re going to carry
it – and that’s what it was made for – Bianchi
makes an AccuMold holster, Size 15, that fits the
97B quite well.

illon’s RL 550B has long worn the title of “The
World’s Most Versatile Progressive Reloader,” and
stripping it down to its most basic form – Dillon’s BL
(Basic Loader) 550 – adds a whole new dimension
of versatility for the shooter/hunter who needs to
feed several rifles.
The BL 550 is essentially an RL 550B without the
automatic priming and powder systems. Capable of
loading over 160 calibers – just like the RL 550B – it
uses any manufacturer’s standard 7/8” x 14 reloading
dies. It’s priced comparably with other manufacturers’
turret presses; yet unlike them, it’s fully upgradeable
to Dillon’s Progressive RL 550B loader!
The interchangeable toolhead (Page 15) makes it
quick, easy and inexpensive to change calibers. For
example, if you load .30-06 for elk, .243 for deer and
.22-250 for coyotes, you don’t even have to change
the shellplate. You simply pull two pins and swap the
toolhead with your .30-06 dies to another toolhead
with your .22-250 or .243 dies in less than 30 seconds! The additional toolheads are $22.95 each, or
$20.95 each if you buy three or more – if you load for
several rifles it’s a no-brainer! Once you get your dies
adjusted, you’ll never have to re-set them.
A powder measure adapter (bottom right photo) is
available if you want to use a manual measure that
you already own. Or, if you want to weigh every
powder charge you load, it’s easy – you can use a
powder trickler with the powder die/funnel assembly

difference is that while you are
pushing the case into the die to
size it, a 1/4 horsepower electric
motor driving a carbide cutter is
trimming the case to length.

Dillon’s CV-2001 Vibratory Case Cleaner is the
largest in the industry. Its 12-1/2 quart bowl capacity
will allow you to polish up to 1,300 .38/.357 or 550
.30-06 cases per hour.
Not only is our capacity greater, but our motor is
larger in horsepower, internally cooled, thermally
protected, and turns on precision ball bearings. This
is no “hobby” machine!
The bowl and base are constructed of
7/32” thick injection molded high-strength
polypropylene which is impact and abrasion resistant.

This new case cleaner uses the same motor as the
CV-2001 and is every bit as tough – just more compact. To accompany the CV-750, the CM-500 does

Case/Media Separators
After we sold thousands of our famous
first generation FL-2000 case cleaners, customers who had purchased them began
asking us to address the problem of separating the cleaned and polished brass from
the cleaning media.
We knew from the beginning that the
simplest method of separating would be a
rotating squirrel cage, but we had to find a
design we could manufacture economically. Our problem was that it had to be BIG –
big enough to handle the entire load of the
FL-2000 series case cleaners.
The solution was an injection molded
reversible part. Simple, and it works great.
Our device is large,
10” x 14”, and will hold more
than 1,600 .38 Special cases. It
sits on a large media collection
tub that measures 18” x 22”.
The tub keeps the mess off the
floor and bench.
It’s fast – so fast it will
remove media from 1500
rounds of .223 brass in a matter
of seconds.

designed “V” ring buckle. Imitation is the sincerest form
of flattery, and the marketplace is full of copies of this

Bob Mernickle when SASS introduced the
“Wild Bunch” category for Cowboy
Action Shooting.
When these two champions put their
heads together, they created a holster
and mag pouch that look like they were
made at the turn of the century, yet feature state-of-the-art speed and accuracy.
The holster is hard molded so as not to
lose its shape even after thousands of
draws. It spaces the pistol’s grip frame
away from your body so you’ll get a full
combat grip, and the holster includes the
T-nut lock system to ensure that it stays
in place during a draw.
The mag pouch spaces the magazines so when you grab one mag, the
second isn’t in your way; above the
belt line so the belt doesn’t interfere
with the draw; and at the max depth

duplicate the efficiency and the “feel” of
that tray in other machine applications

development of the Strong Mount for

Sizing/Depriming Die
Our sizing/depriming dies feature a unique “floating
decap assembly” with a snap spring that throws the spent
primer off the pin and eliminates the problem of primer
“draw back” that often occurs when decapping military
brass. The primary feature of Dillon’s size die design – the
long, tapered carbide ring with a radiused opening –
remains unchanged.
That radiused opening, and its importance to progressive
reloading, is one of the reasons why our seat and crimp dies
are better. We found a way of manufacturing these dies that
has enabled us to make the lead-in radius even bigger! The
bigger radius makes progressive loading with our equipment
even smoother – but that’s still only a part of the story.
Bullet Seating Die
Our new quick-disassembly seat die allows the user to
disassemble and clean the seat die without losing adjustment.
In this manner, bullet lube and shavings can be quickly
removed from the die, thereby guaranteeing a constant seating depth. We’ve incorporated a “flip-flop” seating stem and a
clip that enables you to remove the die insert and change the
seating stem from round nose to semi-wadcutter without
unscrewing a seating stem out of the die body. We’ve always
included both types of seating stems, but the new doubleended design makes it a simple matter to remove a pin,
reverse the seating stem, make any minor seating depth
adjustments that may be necessary and go on loading in a
fraction of the time it used to take.
Crimp Die
We’ve made it easy for you to remove the die insert for
cleaning without having to change the critical crimp adjustment. Once your crimp die is set for the proper amount of
crimp, you’ll never have to change it. This is especially good
news for all of you who load lead bullets! Before, you had to
unscrew the die from the toolhead and disassemble the die in
order to remove any bullet lube or lead residue. Then, you
had to start from square one to re-adjust the crimp. Those
days are over. All you have to do now is pop a clip and the
die insert drops into your hand for cleaning.
NOTE: All Dillon Pistol Die sets include our sizer/ decap die,
seat die and a separate crimp die. (Taper crimp for autos; accucrimp for revolvers.)

Dillon Three-Die Rifle Die Sets include a sizing/
depriming die, a bullet seating die and a taper crimp
die. Dillon Two-Die Rifle Die Sets include a
sizing/depriming die and a seat/crimp die.
Sizing/Depriming Die
The sizing/depriming die is full-length, to minimum tolerances, sizing cases down to function in
semi- and full-automatic firearms. We strongly suggest that a headspace case gage be used to correctly
adjust the size die.
For high volume users, such as commercial
reloaders, law enforcement agencies, and high
power or service rifle competitors, we also offer .223
and .308 die sets with a full-length carbide sizing
die. Lubrication is still required, but the increased
scratch resistance and die longevity of carbide are of
great benefit to these groups of users.
The depriming assembly includes a carbide
expander ball for “squeak-free,” effortless neck
expansion. This expander ball is located in the middle of the depriming stem to take advantage of superior initial leverage for easier extraction.
In the event of a stuck case, the design of the
depriming assembly allows it to function as a stuck
case remover.
Bullet Seating Die
Our bullet seating die is internally designed to keep
the bullet straight throughout the seating process.
Once properly adjusted, the only measurable runout
will be that which is inherent in the bullet.
Taper Crimp Die
The taper crimp die is also specially configured to
center both the case neck and the case body, thereby
aligning the entire cartridge for a more uniform
crimp. Dillon Rifle Dies are designed to meet the
more rigid requirements for both accuracy and precision demanded by today’s marksman.
A taper crimp die is preferred for loading ammunition intended to be used in semiautomatic firearms
with detachable box magazines, and in lever-action
firearms with tubular magazines.

‘Belted Magnum’ Powder System
M
agnum rifle cartridges can require from 70
grains to well in excess of 100 grains for a
single charge. Our “Belted Magnum” Powder
System features a maximum-capacity steel powder bar that can dispense more than 100 grains
of extruded IMR powder.
Like all of Dillon’s powder measures, the
Belted Magnum Powder System is case-activated
and can be used with your RL 550B, XL 650 or
AT 500 reloader. It’s ideal for loading largecaliber magnum rifle cartridges. We tested this
system with various extruded rifle powders and
found that powder charge variations stayed
within plus-or-minus three-tenths of a grain.
The “Belted Magnum” Powder System is
based on our SL 900 Shot Dispenser, so the Maximum Charge Bar won’t work in our standard
powder measures – you’ll need to buy the entire
system. The good news is that the “Belted Magnum” Powder System has an integral drain, so it’s
easy to empty the hopper in order to change
powder types; so, if you load several big calibers
with various powders, it’s easy to switch from
one to another.
Keep plenty of extra powder on hand, because when you’re dispensing 100-plus grains
into every cartridge, you’re gonna need it!

The initial distance a bullet must travel
when fired (from the cartridge case mouth
until it engages the rifling) is absolutely

The morning I was to meet Katie Weilage, I
received a call from Chris Dillon at Dillon Aero,
our sister company. Katie was in town for a class
at Dillon Aero and we were doing a photo shoot
while she was here. Chris asked me to do an article about Katie in The Blue Press and wanted the
title to be something like, “Beauty and the Beast.”
Really? I thought. At the
time, I figured “the Beast” part
of the title was referring to the
Dillon Aero M134D Gatling
Gun. I was wrong. Wrong
because – unlike Chris – I had
yet to find out what Katie does
for a living.
Turns out “the Beast” Chris
was referring to was the Mi-17
helicopter, the former Soviet
workhorse for which Katie has
served as a flight instructor,
maintenance instructor, A&P
mechanic, and flight engineer!
You see, she instructs the
Afghan military/police, nonrated aircrew members on the
Mi-8/17. She has also instructed Mi-8/17 systems classes to
the Afghan military/police in a
classroom setting.
Essentially, Katie trains Afghans to be crew
chiefs on the Mi-17; but how in the world does a
young lady from Southwest Iowa end up in
Afghanistan as a civilian “contractor?”
It started one summer when her mother took
her to the Strategic Air Command Museum at
Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska. “I
was bitten by the aviation bug,” Katie said, “I
wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up.” So,
she did all she could to make that dream come
true, including ROTC, but a motorcycle accident
before she was to be commissioned led to a medical board declining her as a candidate because of
a “delayed union” of a fracture she had suffered.
The “bug bite” wouldn’t go away, however, so
she pursued other means to the desired end. Katie
earned an associates degree in
aviation maintenance, then a
batchelor of science in professional aeronautics with a double minor in aviation safety and
business administration, and
went to work in the civilian aviation field.

contract in El Paso, Texas, contacted me and said, ‘We’re hiring, and would like
you to interview for a position.’ I’d never worked
on a helicopter in my life,” she continued, “all my
experience was in general aviation fixed wing!”
Katie said a “crusty” retired first sergeant gave
her the chance of a lifetime when he asked her,
“Why do you want to work on helicopters?” Her
answer must have struck him as being genuine
: The Girl Next Doorgunner
when she said, “I don’t know anything about helicopters, but I REALLY want this job, and I’m
willing to learn.”
She walked out of the interview not knowing if
she would get the job or not. Then she received a
call from the company asking, “Why aren’t you
working with us? You were supposed to start two
weeks ago!” It turned out that the letter containing the company’s offer had been misplaced on a
secretary’s desk. Fortunately, the mistake was rectified and Katie got the job.
So, “the girl next door” becomes “the girl next
doorgunner.” Prior to serving as a contractor,
Katie had no “gunner”
experience. Now, she
trains crew chief/gunners
for a living, having
learned the “gunner” part
on the job in Afghanistan.

All her training and experience has served
Katie well, making her possibly the most experienced woman in the Russian-helicopter world of
Mi-8s, Mi-17s as well as Mi-24/35s. A selfdescribed “far from prissy girl,” Katie is undaunted by being the only woman in “a man’s world. “
“I grew up racing go karts, shooting a bow and
arrow, and was the only girl in A&P school,” she
explains. “But, going to Afghanistan was an eyeopener. I get stared at a lot by the local nationals.” Most of the local nationals, serving their
country, are not used to a female “crew chief”
(being the ONLY female aircrew member).
Needless to say, Katie knows she’s in a hostile
environment when she’s on duty. “I carry my
Glock 19 every day,” she explains, “My M4 is kept
in a secure location until I fly, or unless I want it.
They’re my best friends while I’m overseas. I love
the M4 full-auto model.”
Katie’s small arms training came courtesy of
prior-Army friends, a military qualification course,
and ongoing company qualification annually. On
the job, her weapons training included courses in
how to use and maintain the Russian PKM heavy
machine gun, AK-47s, and on particular flights,
the Dillon Aero M134D Gatling gun.
“We (contractors) are
trained by fellow coworkers who completed
the Dillon Aero School.”
Katie said. “We learn the
disassembly for cleaning
and inspecting the
weapon system. Then we
have hands-on training
for the installation and
preflight on the helicopters. Once all previous tasks are completed, we
go to the range for qualifications.”
Just so you don’t get the impression that Katie’s
work involves training Afghans as crew chiefs on
Mi-17 helicopters for sightseeing ventures, I need
to tell you that her group’s mission is classified,
but is likely to result in contact with well-armed
and highly motivated opposition.
I admire Katie. I found her to be delightful to
work with and talk to, and once I found out that
we’re from the same area in Southwest Iowa…
well, we’re neighbors! So, I’m sorry, Chris, I
couldn’t use the title, “Beauty and the Beast.” It

close together. When you are first setting up a “naked” machine, there is plenty of wrench room, but if you have a need
to adjust a die afterward, it often requires a delicate touch to
maneuver a lock ring on a crowded toolhead.
Dillon Precision has addressed this in two ways. We now
offer new 1” die lock rings and a 1” Bench Wrench to fit
them. This combination gives much more room to re-adjust
dies after they’re already mounted. The opposite end of our
new wrench is a 7/16” box-end for adjusting the Powder Bar
of any Dillon Powder Measure. Our new lock rings fit any
standard 7/8” x 14 dies.

An IDPA Master Tells You How to Do It, Too!
Having addressed Strings 5 and 7, the one
hand only strings, together in the last installment
of this series on shooting the IDPA classifier, we
now backtrack to String 6 to finish out Stage 1.
STRING 6: Modified El Presidente, start with
three rounds in the gun: fire one round each T1T3, slidelock reload, one more round each T1-T3.
(My time: 6.98 seconds.)
This is, by IDPA classifier standards, a long, complex string of fire. Thus we have many opportunities
to carve out huge chunks of time with improvement
to our technique. Lots of tips on this one.
Tip #1: We begin facing away from the targets.
When turning to engage, we want to turn toward
our strong side: i.e. if right-handed turn clockwise.
We want to turn around the gun which actually
moves very little because it’s right over our pivot
foot. This makes it much easier to draw the gun
fast; otherwise we wind up chasing it with our
hand as the piece moves in a big circle.
Tip #2: We turn fully around BEFORE the gun
begins its extension, otherwise we’ll still be

swinging our body as the gun moves forward,
leading to shots pulled wide. To ensure we begin
our fast turn correctly, at the instant the timer
buzzes, we SNAP our head around and look
right at the center of the 8” circle on the first target. Our body will swiftly follow our head. If we
incorporate the head snap into our technique,
along with a few other tricks we’ll discuss shortly, we will turn so fast there’s literally no way we
could complete the draw before our body has
fully turned around and is stable.
Tip #3: Also to facilitate our fast turn, while
waiting for the buzzer we slightly lift the front of
our right foot (assuming a right-handed shooter) off
the ground. This is very subtle, no one watching
would be able to tell we were doing it. (I mention
that to indicate how little movement is required,
not to indicate we’re doing anything sneaky; this is
quite legal.) At the buzzer, having unloaded the
weight on the front of our foot, it’s very simple and
easy to just pivot on the rear ball. By contrast, if we
pivoted on the front of the foot, that would require
lifting up the rear ball then lowering it back down
after the turn; this imparts a lot of movement to the

“emergency reload,” use the support
hand thumb to drop the slide.
The slide stop is thumbed down, the
gun chambers a fresh round, the gun
is ready to go again and the support
hand can instantly slide back into a
shooting grip.
The foot continues to pivot on its
ball, front still not touching the
ground, the right foot comes off the
ground and begins to swing around.
The front of the left foot hits
the ground oriented toward the
target, the right foot continues to
come around.
The left foot hits the ground, now
the shooter is in the normal
shooting stance, but faced in the
opposite direction.
Leave the gun at eye level during the speedload.

after the pivot a back-and-forth, side-to-side swing
that makes it seriously difficult – if not impossible –
to fire that first, accurate, aimed shot fast, and is
just generally a loser of a technique. By contrast,
turning on the ball of the foot does not require lifting our body up, then back down, the contact portion of our body to the ground, and therefore our
body as a whole, stays on the same level throughout the pivot. This allows the body to stabilize after
the pivot MUCH faster.
IMPORTANT: The front of the right foot does
not touch the ground until after the body is completely turned around.
Tip #4: When reloading, keep the gun high, in
line of sight, don’t drop it down. We’re just going
to have to bring it back up again to fire after the
reload anyway; why add all that excess movement
and time by going up then down?
Tip #5: Drop the slide with the support hand
thumb on the slide release, it’s much faster than
slingshotting the slide.
Tip #6: Again we have an instance where
shooting with both eyes open becomes very

important. With both eyes open we’ll be able to
see the next target in our peripheral vision even as
we’re moving the gun to it, rather than having it
suddenly appear in our vision.
Tip #7: Prep the trigger between targets. It saves
immense amounts of time if, when the gun arrives,
it’s ready to fire instead of having to complete that
first trigger pull on the next target from scratch
AFTER it gets there.
We have now completed Stage 1. As I mentioned in Part 1 of the series, I am giving you,
for each string, the times I posted on the classifier run when earning my Stock Service Pistol
Master rank. As we have seen thus far, my times
for each string were decent but not blazingly
fast. Accuracy-wise, I dropped seven points for
the entirety of Stage 1. Thus we figure my score
for the stage thus:
STAGE 1 RAW SCORE: 26.99 seconds
DROPPED POINTS: 7 x 0.5 = 3.50 seconds
OVERALL SCORE: 30.49 seconds

lower receivers apart. 3) Insert the pin on the

pin tab. 4) Close receivers with the AR-Link
inserted into the lower receiver. 5) Push the
take-down pin through the channel in the
AR-Link to lock the upper and lower
receivers into place. 6) Clean your rifle. 7) To

Scout Scope Mounts easily allow for complete DISASSEMBLY of
your rifle for cleaning and maintenance while retaining zero. These
rifles are designed so that carbon build-up can easily be cleaned
from the gas tube and piston. This is routine maintenance, necessary
in order to maintain a properly functioning rifle. Other mounts for
