ADAMS SCRAPBOOK
ve
s
The scrapbook is composed of clippings from about the time
of World War 1 until the 1950•s. They are pasted into:
Report of the Superintendent of Insurance, Dominion of
Canada, for the Year 1899. The clippings are not in any
particular order, and the dates are jumbled . There is
considerable emphasis on the Royal Families of Europe and
poetry, but local marriages, births and deaths are also
included. The Scrapbook contains genealogical research on
the Hicks Family of Picton, and a number of clippings
concerning same. A photograph of Mrs. Hicks Minaker has
been moved to the photograph collection (N-3085). The
scrapbook was donated by Shirley Adams.

File - •Prentice Boys
The Protestant Associat ion of •Prentice Boys of America 11 ,
or •Prentice Boys were Irish ultra-Protestant lodges
which sprang up in Northe rn Ireland and Britain shortly
after the siege of Londonderry (from which incident they
got their name). They thus pre-date the establishment of
the Orange Lodges by many years.

Little is known of their early establishment in Canada.
There is almost no secondary writing about this
organization, nor is there any material at Queen•s or at

Annual Repo r ts indicate that the Order was first organized
in the Kingston a r ea, and the first lodges were
established in Frontenac County and the so uthern portion
of Lennox & Addington. Lodge #2 , for example, was on
Amherst Island. The Gran d Lodge of the organization he l d
its annual meeting in Camden East ( Lo dge #10), in 1887.

J. ALEX EDMISON COLLECTION
Dupuis Scrapbook
This scrapbook belonged to Dr. T.R. Dupuis, Physician.
The clippings (which date from 1852-1932) are mounted in a
book specially printed for the purpose by William Warwick,
Toronto, and entitled "Literary Scraps". Dr. Dupuis kept
an index by title at the beginning of the book. The
scrapbook and was given to J. Alex Edmison, Q.C.,
Assistant to the Principal at Queen's University by F.H.
Broder of Morrisburg in 1952. It was presented to the
Lennox & Addington Historical Society in 1970.
In 1953, Mr. Edmison lent the scrapbook to the
Kingston Whig-Standard. The editors singled out two
clippings for particular comment . The first may have come
from the London Free Press in 1861, and attacks Sir Henry
Smith for a speech against the Conservative party . Smith
was first Warden of the Kingston Penitentiary, and M.L . A.
1841-61. The second is a defamatory article on the "three
poet clowns of Bath". A full index of the contents is
provided in Appendix #2.

THE PERRY PAPERS

s
The Perry Family were active in Bath after the war of
1812. John W. Perry (active 1827-1867) seems to have been
involved in many businesses, including gold mining
(Napanee Mining Company), merchantile trade, a woolen mill
and a distillery. He leased a carding mill from Benjamin
Booth in 1827. In the 1830•s, he was active in Camden;
by 1839 in Napanee. In the course of business, Perry took
notes [of 11 I.o.u•s 11 ] , which he carefully saved even after
the debt was paid. He may have also followed the sharp
19th century practice of buying notes owed to other men at
discounts. A large portion of the collection consists of
these notes.
A son, James Perry, owned and operated the woolen mill
in Napanee until 1884.
Unfortunately, the collection was not properly sorted
and arranged before being numbered. Arrangement by the
accession number was thus rendered impossible. A
compromise solution was to sort the receipts by date
within each file .
The collection was split prior to 1959. A portion of
the Perry Papers were microfilmed and indexed by the
Public Archives of Canada as part of their inventory
project. These papers compliment the papers inventoried
here and are really part of the same collection.
