Visitor guide WINTER 2015 - 2016
Welcome to Pralognan-la-Vanoise
Ladies and gentlemen, dear kids,
The Mayor’s Office, the Tourism Office, Labellemontagne, as well as all accommodations, shops, and
services in the village have prepared whole host of new surprises for you to spend a fantastically
enjoyable vacation and leave the worries of daily life behind.
Frequent guests will notice that both the big and little have changed, such as: the logo, a new joint ski
pass with La Plagne, an improved big-air area, the full opening of the Aquatic Center with spa, new
sports equipment (gymnasium, fitness room, indoor climbing wall)…
For kids, ski instructors will introduce you to the joys of sliding on snow and at the end of the week
will award you with a snowflake or even a star… our events team has put together a program of festive
entertainment in addition to skiing. You will be more than delighted…
The Tourism Office, which has moved to a new building (in the plaza in front of City Hall), is ready and
available to provide advice, show you where to go, sign you up, listen to your comments and requests,
and has several new services to offer (wifi, family welcome…).
Welcome
For those new to vacationing here, you will discover a mountain village with a long and rich history, a
splendid mountain décor, a protected all-natural environment in the heart of Vanoise National Park,
and Pralognan locals accustomed to warmly welcoming visitors and vacationers…
Read through the Visitor Guide as well as the Petit Journal and you will learn everything you need to
know about Pralognan-la-Vanoise. On behalf of all of the entire population in Pralognan, we hope that
you enjoy a truly great vacation.
Armelle Rolland, Mayor of Pralognan la Vanoise

Through a concerted effort by our team, this fall the Tourism Office officially obtained Qualité
Tourisme ™ certification.
This is the first step towards obtaining 1st category standing and qualifying the village for official
French “Stations Touristiques” (Tourism Resort) status.
In order to improve service quality (guest services, entertainment, promotion), the Tourism Office
offers you the opportunity, through various questionnaires, to provide feedback and indicate your
overall level of satisfaction. We welcome your active participation in the modernization of our village.

What’s new
A new logo, a new communications style
Few destinations offer so much to enjoy in such a small package… A favorite and
famous destination, Pralognan-la-Vanoise embodies a rich alpine history and
culture. Its celebrated past, the incredible natural setting, the local authenticity, and
the genuinely warm and welcoming atmosphere shape its unique personality.
We wanted our new logo to reflect this unique personality: powerful, authentic,
inspiring. The ibex, emblem of the Vanoise Range and a historic symbol for the
village, exhibits a majestic posture, hooves set firmly on the summit of the Grande
Casse. The coat-of-arms form alludes to Pralognan’s celebrated history. The name
Pralognan-la-Vanoise asserts itself with force, in an elegant yet contemporary style.
This new logo is the result of a collaborative project during spring and summer 2015,
involving several Pralognan locals. It will slowly but surely replace the current logo,
both in the village and on all of our communications tools.

Alpine skiing
Tucked right below one of the largest glacier ice caps in the Alps, with
dozens of 3000 meter peaks rising high above, Pralognan-la-Vanoise
enjoys an ideal situation. It comes as no surprise that copious amounts
of snow each winter and the sublime high-mountain landscapes have
regaled for decades all those who love the great outdoors in their allnatural state.
Long ago, the ski area revealed its appeal to experts seeking incredible
mountain thrills to backcountry skiing enthusiasts and to families won
over by such accessible terrain.
In the end, up here, every perspective and pleasure has its place.
The athletic and the pensive always admire with childlike wonder the
diverse flora and fauna in the well-preserved natural surroundings. So
many incredible timeless moments make every stay truly unforgettable.
And there is of course much more…

HIKES
The incredible mountain environment surrounding
Pralognan-la-Vanoise is ideally suited for hiking, with one or
two limitations.
Most of the classic summer trails are not recommended for
winter excursions on foot.
Tracks from snowmobiles or snowcats do not mean that a
trail is maintained or safe.
Choosing to venture outside the maintained winter area is
your responsibility and requires following a few basic safety
rules:
> reviewing your chosen itinerary and the associated risks,
> taking the weather, snow, and avalanche risk reports into
consideration,
> wearing appropriate clothing for physical exercise in cold
temperatures,
> carrying the right snow-safety equipment: transceiver,
shovel, and probe,
> telling your group or your accommodations where you are
going.
Snowshoes, even if they have improved over the years, are
not appropriate for steep slopes or for snow frozen solid by
cold temperatures and the wind.

Sightseeing
& culture
Pralognan has a singular history to discover, one of a high-mountain kingdom
since 1860, marked by the first ascent of the legendary Grande Casse, and
of a visionary winter sports resort starting as early as the 1950s.
Pralognan also offers a uniquely authentic local heritage, a village without
glitter or superficial appearances, forever proud to preserve its traditions,
culture, and identity.
This identity is distinguished by a strong architectural heritage, by small
traditional hamlets dotted with chalets built from stone and wood, and
covered with the wood or stone shingles typical of the area. Farming and a
pastoral way of life still define the area, even in the twenty-first century, a
guarantee that this historic know-how continues to be passed down from
one generation to the next. While influenced by its past, Pralognan still lives
just as much in the present through sporting, cultural, and festive events all
throughout the year that set the rhythm in a village that is everything but
stuck in the past.
Vanoise National Park
Created in 1963, Vanoise National Park covers the mountain
range between the Tarentaise Valley to the north and the
Maurienne Valley to the south. Extending to the Italian
border, it shares a 14 kilometer boundary with Italy’s
Gran Paradiso National Park, sister park since 1972. The
two parks make up the largest natural protected area in
Western Europe. More than 2/3 of Pralognan-la-Vanoise
is located in the park’s most protected area (“the central
zone”). Pralognan is one of the main gateways to this natural
wonder.

Organized by PraloTrail, this is a gathering for ski tourers and
snowshoers to climb to the Col de la Vanoise Hut (2500m)

A must-attend event for the last 20 years, the Montée du
Siècle (Century Climb) offers the opportunity to meet in
Pralognan for the traditional climb to Col de la Vanoise
Pass, located between the massive Grande Casse and the

Going out &
useful addresses
In Pralognan-la-Vanoise, you are much more than a customer, you are
our guest. This seemingly small symbolic detail embodies the warm and
attentive welcome awaiting all visitors. Even for a short stay, everyone
feels right at home whether in a hotel, a mountain hut, a chalet, or an
apartment.
This sentiment gains even more meaning when you open the door to
any one of the many establishments at the resort. Choose between a
wide variety of bars, pubs, snack bars, tea rooms, and wine cellars, as
well as no less than 20 restaurants and three mountainside restaurants.
The shopkeepers in the village are no exception, and go out of their way
to ensure that the resort maintains its warm and welcoming reputation.

Transportation
For Pralognan-la-Vanoise, being nestled at the upper end of a
mountain valley is a genuine advantage, offering visitors the chance
to enjoy a privileged, cozy, and well-preserved all-natural destination.
Nevertheless, the resort is far from isolated, offering easy access
whatever the mode of transportation.
Concerned with protecting and preserving the surrounding environment,
Pralognan-la-Vanoise places an emphasis on developing the greenest
possible forms of transportation, whether ski-bus shuttles for moving
about within the resort, or transfers by bus from the nearest SNCF
train stations or airports.
What’s new
• A new shuttle to and from Champagny-en-Vanoise

Snow-covered Village
Auto mechanic
You have probably noticed that we leave the roads covered
in snow. We do this on purpose to preserve the beauty and
peacefulness of our mountain village as well as the water
quality of our rivers.
Salt is only used on extremely icy sections, sometimes
combined with gravel to limit as much as possible the use
of salt.
