Kappeln and its Town Centre
5
Former Station Hotel
In 1885 Kappeln was the final station of Flensburg’s county
railroad which connected the seaport with the north of
Angeln and Flensburg. Soon more county railroads
followed also connecting Kappeln with Schleswig and
Eckernförde. In 1972 the regular traffic on the last remaining railway to Süderbrarup was abandoned. Since 1979
the Angeln Steam Train – Germany’s northernmost heritage
railway – operates on that very track which was built in
1904. Today’s Café Kö in Kappeln reminds of the heyday of
the railroad: the early station hotel established in 1902 also
served as a ticket office until 1958.
The seaport was first mentioned in 1357 as “Capell”. The
local development likely began with the building of a chapel
on the bank of the Schlei about seven kilometers from
Schleimünde (where the Schlei ends in the Baltic Sea). First,
Kappeln belonged to the diocese of Schleswig which sold the
place to the squire of Roest in 1533. In 1807, Kappeln was
devolved to the Danish Crown. In 1864 it became Prussian
and received its town charter in 1870.
Today about 10,000 people live in Kappeln which became
nationally known since the mid-80s by the TV series “Der
Landarzt“. Many film locations from the television site
“Deekelsen” are located in Kappeln and its vicinity.
A long pedestrian area inviting you to stroll and shop,
stretches across the Deekelsen square in the historic centre
of Kappeln. The flyer at hand guides the visitor around the
historic centre to six sights at which the development of the
town can be seen. The tour starts at the tourist information
centre in the Mill Amanda and leads to the Old Court, St.
Nicolas Church and the northern harbour where once the
railway station was located.

Prinzenstraße (Prince Street)
Laid out in 1800 the street is named after Prince Charles of
Hesse, the squire of Roest and former owner of Kappeln.
He provided over two hectares of building land for 32 new
houses in order to support Kappeln’s growth. In Prinzenstraße multiple old houses lovingly restored are silent
witnesses for successful urban redevelopment. The house
number 38 is particularly interesting. It shows a sandstone
relief in its gable that dates back to the 16th century and
shows God the Father as judge of the world. Presumably the
relief once belonged to the chapel of Gut Stubbe and was
brought to Kappeln by a merchant.
15 tour flyers invite to walk on historic paths of the region
around the Ostseefjord Schlei. Another flyer of this series
also guides you through Kappeln’s town centre. Furthermore, Kappeln’s tourist information centre offers another
tour folder for free. And if you are interested in a personally
guided tour or an individually organized Kappeln tour: the
team of the tourist information centre would gladly arrange
the contact to skilled and experienced city guides – just call
us at +49 4642 4027.

Further sights in Kappeln:
Fabrikstraße (Factory Street)
A workshop has recently been established where once were
small, close-packed factories. In Kappeln’s chocolate kitchen,
visitors can see first-hand how chocolate articles are made.
(City map D4)
Fishing Harbour
Fishing has always been Kappeln’s economic basement. And
even today cutters moor in the fishing harbour where fresh fish
is disembarked and sold to amateur cooks on the spot.

Tour through Kappeln *
Lindenallee (Lime Tree Ave.)
The massive gate next to the chapel at the upper end of
Schmiedestraße leads to the cemetery with its over 200
year-old lime tree avenue. This permanent site almost seems
like a stately park. (City map D4)
Art Gallery Hänisch
High ceilings, bright rooms, and creaking floorboards:
Hildegard Hänisch’s stylish city villa on 53 Schmiedestraße
shows regional art since 2008. The foci of the exhibition:
painting and graphic design.
(Bykort D4)
Carlsgärten (Charles Gardens)
The idyllic Carlsgärten are located behind Kappeln’s cemetery.
Germany’s oldest allotments were laid out for the residents of
Kappeln in 1814 by Charles landgrave of Hessen.

It is one of the few so called secular buildings by church
architect Johannes Otzen and is considered an outstanding
example of decorative brick building. Also it is considered
the most significant building of the 19th century in Kappeln.
