Being the Artist in Residence at the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich will be the
highlight of my season!
Both the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and I can look forward to an intensive and
exciting way to create music: with various symphonic and chamber music works.
This is the greatest way to discover the voice of an orchestra.
Lionel and I have been working together for many years and I felt an immediate
and deep connection from the very start. Making music with him is exciting and
a thoroughly satisfying experience. I am so happy to be able to perform with
Lionel and the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich. And the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich can
count itself fortunate to have Lionel.
I am really looking forward to my time in Zurich: creating amazing music
in an amazing city!

Esa-Pekka Salonen Creative Chair
This season is the first in which the Tonhalle Society Zurich has awarded a
Creative Chair. A position for a renowned composer of our age who, at the same
time, is also a conductor or a solo artist has thus been created. The decision
for the 2014/15 season went to Esa-Pekka Salonen, who will provide us with an
comprehensive overview of his orchestra and chamber music repertory during
performances excellently led by the principal conductor Lionel Bringuier, by
guest conductors or, as in 2015, by Esa-Pekka Salonen himself. Workshops,
lectures or discussion sessions for various target groups will offer an insight
into the work of the Creative Chair holder.

Expanding the repertoire
«The development of a 21st century repertoire is both our calling and our challenge.
We wish to present the compositional approaches of our age, while discussing them with our
audiences and artists. The Tonhalle Society Zurich is the initiator of new contracts and the
co-principal together with renowned international partners. The continuous enhancement of
the international network is just as important as the scheduling of second and third
productions of existing works.» Ilona Schmiel

Music and literature have always managed to inspire and enrich one another, and go
hand-in-hand during the Wahlverwandtschaften series. After the positive response last season,
we have decided to continue this interdisciplinary event series. As in the past, the players
of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich in chamber music formations will accompany the readings,
lectures and discussion sessions. The series organised by the Literaturhaus Museumsgesellschaft
Zurich and the Tonhalle Society Zurich will, for the first time, be held in cooperation with the
Hotel Dolder Grand and outside the Tonhalle: on 26.10.14 as part of the literary festival
«Zürich liest’14» and on 22.03.15 in the Ballroom of The Dolder Grand.

Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich
The Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich is again organising one of its particularly stimulating and lively educational
projects. The musicians will give children from Zurich primary schools the opportunity to make their own music,
sing and discover musical instruments. This allows the orchestra members to introduce young people to the
world of classical music and to wow them with trumpets, harps and violins. The highlight of the event will be a
closing concert (open to the general public) where the children perform what they have learned together with
the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich.

Secondary school programme
Young people are introduced to the world of classical music through direct contact with the members of
the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. A guided tour behind the scenes offers the secondary school pupils a fantastic
insight into the busy life of an orchestra and into a concert schedule. The schoolchildren will also have the
opportunity to experience a live pilot and dress rehearsal of the orchestra. The highlight of the event is
provided by the unforgettable experience of an evening concert.

colourful Swiss folk music scene, features a number of premieres and commissioned works, and
allows visitors to master their skills at dance workshops.

Classic meets electro. A magical evening that leads you into new worlds, while celebrating both classical and
electronic music. This is a fascinating event where different musical worlds meet, providing the audience with
a unique concert experience. The classical section will see the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich doing what it does
best: creating wonderful music with all its enthusiasm and ability. During the second half of the evening, live
electronic music will turn the concert foyer into a grooving dance floor. tonhalleLATE is a concert format which
has long been a classic part of the Tonhalle Zurich season. This year, the event will be held three times. The

An international film music competition will be held for the third time during the 10th Zurich Film
Festival (ZFF). In recent years, over 100 composers have responded to the request to write a
short-film score for a symphony orchestra. The winner of the competition, which is organised by
the ZFF, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and the Forum Filmmusik, will be awarded the Golden Eye
for «Best International Film Music 2014» and receive a cheque for 10,000 Swiss francs. The Tonhalle
Orchestra Zurich will perform the top five scores chosen by an expert jury. The second half of
the evening will focus on the Oscar winning scores by the German composer Hans Zimmer, one
of the most successful and influential film composers in Hollywood today.

Lionel Bringuier. In a team of eight or nine, the student managers shall be responsible for the marketing, financing, realising and setting of the tonhalleLATE event on 27.03.15 and gain an in-depth insight into the various
issues associated with organising a concert over an eight-month period. The student managers will receive
training on a variety of topics to be able to work on their own initiative in close cooperation with members of
the Tonhalle Society Zurich and to experience the musicians of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich firsthand.

The non-profit association «Superar Suisse» promotes children and young people through a wide
range of instrumental music, singing and dancing projects. Superar Suisse realises the ideas of the
globally successful musical-social initiative El Sistema from Venezuela and its Vienna-based European
offspring Superar in Switzerland. Superar offers primary schoolchildren the opportunity to participate
in four weekly music lessons integrated into their timetable and led by professional artists.
Intensive music and dance training gives the youngsters self-confidence, self-discipline and a sense of
togetherness. Regular performances are an integral element of Superar.
Superar is Spanish and means «to surpass expectations»; and this is something which Superar enables
the children to do free of charge.

David Zinman
David Zinman, the long-serving principal conductor of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, is an
exceptional educator. He will return to the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich as a conductor laureate,
weaving his wealth of knowledge into his international conducting courses with the Tonhalle
Orchestra Zurich. «The most important thing at the start of any conductor’s career is to
gain as much experience as possible,» says David Zinman. «All of the participants are talented;
each of them has to overcome individual barriers. I was the same age when I embarked on
my career as a professional conductor.»

Zurich Festival
In 2015, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich will once again be deeply involved in the Zurich Festival. The
opening concert, featuring the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and the soloist Julia Fischer, will be conducted by
the orchestra’s principal conductor Lionel Bringuier. The orchestra will be additionally led by Karl-Heinz
Steffens, Gustavo Dudamel and Manfred Honeck. The soloists are Michael Barenboim, Artist in Residence
Yuja Wang and Christian Tetzlaff. During three matinees, András Schiff will perform the three last sonatas by
Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert. Mozart composed his last sonatas before Haydn - Beethoven was
deaf, and Schubert’s composing became more exhilarating than ever before after the master’s death. These
works have a very special aura about them.

The start of the 2014/15 season will see Lionel Bringuier become the new principal conductor of the Tonhalle Orchestra
Zurich. Lionel was born in Nice in 1986 and began studying at
the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris at
the age of 13 - initially cello with Philippe Muller and, after
2000, also conducting with Zsolt Nagy. Whilst studying in Paris,
he received further artistic inspiration, especially in the master classes led by Péter Eötvös and János Fürst. He graduated
in 2004 with «Mention Très Bien à l’unanimité» and was the
winner of the 49th Besançon Young Conductors Competition
in 2005.
Since then he has conducted numerous leading orchestras and
worked for six years as the resident conductor of the Los Angeles
Philharmonic, a collaboration initiated by the former music director Esa-Pekka Salonen and continued by the current music
director Gustavo Dudamel.
During the 2014/15 season, Lionel Bringuier will work intensively with Esa-Pekka Salonen, who, as the Creative Chair, will
be ever-more present, and Yuja Wang, our Artist in Residence.
Furthermore, he will perform a number of concerts with orchestras with which he already has a close association. This
includes invitations from the Cleveland Orchestra, the Los
Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio
France, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra
Sinfonica de Castilla y Leon, where he was the principal director from 2009 to 2012. Great debuts are also planned with,
among others, the Israel Philharmonic and the Philharmonia
Orchestra London.
Lionel Bringuier is a regular guest of the Munich Philharmonic
Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, the Gewandhaus Orchestra and
the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Through his enthusiasm
for 21st century music, he has conducted many premieres, including works by Kaija Saariaho, Marc-André Dalbavie, Magnus
Lindberg and Rebecca Saunders. Lionel Bringuier has won numerous awards for his artistic achievements.
Other distinctions include the «Médaille d’or à l’unanimité
avec les félicitations du jury à l’Académie Prince Rainier III de
Monaco », the «Médaille d’or» from the Lord Mayor of Nice,
and first prize in a competition organised by the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra in Ostrava. Lionel has also received prizes
from the Swiss Foundation Langart and the Cziffra Foundation.

«As the President of the Tonhalle Society Zurich I will do everything possible to maintain the outstanding artistic ability of
our Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and to ensure that the orchestra is introduced to an even wider public.»
«Together with Lionel Bringuier, I am looking forward to leading
the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich into a new era.
In order to build on the orchestra’s great success in the past, we
must continue to develop this ensemble and its excellent players
through artistic and media concepts of the highest quality, ensuring the perfect balance between tradition and innovation. At
the same time, I will meet the challenge of raising the orchestra’s
profile in Zurich, in Switzerland and around the world within the
context of changing realities and opportunities of the 21st century.
For me personally, the opportunity to work for the renowned Tonhalle Society Zurich is not only a real commitment, but also a great
honour, joy and privilege!»

Roughly one hundred musicians from 20 countries represent
the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and play 50 different programmes in more than 100 concerts each season. The orchestra has visited over 70 cities in 14 countries over the past two
decades. Renowned soloists, including Joshua Bell, Rudolf
Buchbinder, Alfred Brendel, Julia Fischer, Hélène Grimaud,
Gidon Kremer, Radu Lupu, Yo-Yo Ma, Viktoria Mullova, Maria
João Pires and Sabine Meyer, have accompanied the Tonhalle
Orchestra Zurich on its tours.
Over 40 CD recordings with works by, for instance, Richard
Strauss and Schumann have helped to enhance the reputation
of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich.
The complete recordings of all the symphonies by Beethoven,
Mahler, Brahms and Schubert are met with great interest and
have received numerous prizes, for example the «German Record Critics’ Award». Concerts are regularly broadcast on SRF
(Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen), Radio Swiss Classic and the
French TV channel Mezzo TV.
Family and chamber music concerts are specifically designed
for young listeners. The children’s matinees playfully engage
children in the world of music while parents enjoy chamber
music on Sunday mornings. Schoolchildren of all ages participate in workshops with orchestra musicians or organise concerts from start to finish in the new «student manager» project.
tonhalleLATE offers the twenty-somethings a unique event, a
classical concert combined with an electro-dance party. TOZZukunft is a community platform for young people aged 18 to 30.
Numerous concerts have an introduction and finale.
In recent years, the orchestra has developed close ties with the
guest conductors Herbert Blomstedt, Christoph von Dohnányi,
Charles Dutoit and Bernard Haitink. Ton Koopman and Giovanni Antonini, both prominent interpreters of historical performances, regularly perform with the orchestra. At the end of
the 2013/14 season, David Zinman will have skilfully shaped
the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich as its principal conductor for almost 20 years. Today, Zinman acts as its conductor laureate.
