Both the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and I can look forward to an intensive and exciting way to create music: with various symphonic and chamber music works. This is the greatest way to discover the voice of an orchestra. Lionel and I have been working together for many years and I felt an immediate and deep connection from the very start. Making music with him is exciting and a thoroughly satisfying experience. I am so happy to be able to perform with Lionel and the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich. And the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich can count itself fortunate to have Lionel. I am really looking forward to my time in Zurich: creating amazing music in an amazing city! A position for a renowned composer of our age who, at the same time, is also a conductor or a solo artist has thus been created. The decision for the 2014/15 season went to Esa-Pekka Salonen, who will provide us with an comprehensive overview of his orchestra and chamber music repertory during performances excellently led by the principal conductor Lionel Bringuier, by guest conductors or, as in 2015, by Esa-Pekka Salonen himself. Workshops, lectures or discussion sessions for various target groups will offer an insight into the work of the Creative Chair holder. Mozart composed his last sonatas before Haydn - Beethoven was deaf, and Schubert’s composing became more exhilarating than ever before after the master’s death. These works have a very special aura about them. Lionel was born in Nice in 1986 and began studying at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris at the age of 13 - initially cello with Philippe Muller and, after 2000, also conducting with Zsolt Nagy. Whilst studying in Paris, he received further artistic inspiration, especially in the master classes led by Péter Eötvös and János Fürst. He graduated in 2004 with «Mention Très Bien à l’unanimité» and was the winner of the 49th Besançon Young Conductors Competition in 2005. Since then he has conducted numerous leading orchestras and worked for six years as the resident conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a collaboration initiated by the former music director Esa-Pekka Salonen and continued by the current music director Gustavo Dudamel. During the 2014/15 season, Lionel Bringuier will work intensively with Esa-Pekka Salonen, who, as the Creative Chair, will be ever-more present, and Yuja Wang, our Artist in Residence. Furthermore, he will perform a number of concerts with orchestras with which he already has a close association. This includes invitations from the Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra Sinfonica de Castilla y Leon, where he was the principal director from 2009 to 2012. Great debuts are also planned with, among others, the Israel Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra London. Lionel Bringuier is a regular guest of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Through his enthusiasm for 21st century music, he has conducted many premieres, including works by Kaija Saariaho, Marc-André Dalbavie, Magnus Lindberg and Rebecca Saunders. Lionel Bringuier has won numerous awards for his artistic achievements. Other distinctions include the «Médaille d’or à l’unanimité avec les félicitations du jury à l’Académie Prince Rainier III de Monaco », the «Médaille d’or» from the Lord Mayor of Nice, and first prize in a competition organised by the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra in Ostrava. Lionel has also received prizes from the Swiss Foundation Langart and the Cziffra Foundation. In order to build on the orchestra’s great success in the past, we must continue to develop this ensemble and its excellent players through artistic and media concepts of the highest quality, ensuring the perfect balance between tradition and innovation. At the same time, I will meet the challenge of raising the orchestra’s profile in Zurich, in Switzerland and around the world within the context of changing realities and opportunities of the 21st century. For me personally, the opportunity to work for the renowned Tonhalle Society Zurich is not only a real commitment, but also a great honour, joy and privilege!» • Born in Zurich in 1953 • Studied law with a legal licence • Worked in various sectors for Credit Suisse from 1982 to 2002 • Member of the Municipal Council of the City of Zurich from 1985 onwards • FDP President in the City of Zurich (1994 to 1996) and in the Canton of Zurich (1996 to 2000) • Director of the Finance Department in the City Council of the City of Zurich from 2002 to 2013 • Member of the administrative board of MCH Group AG, Bank Sparhafen and Gebäudeversicherung Kanton Zürich, and President of the Eleonoren Foundation of the Children’s University Hospital in Zurich • President of the Tonhalle Society Zurich since the end of January 2014 • Born in Hanover in 1967 • Studied Music Education, Classical Philology and Cultural Management in Berlin and Oslo/Bö • 1993/1994 assistant at the Donaueschingen Festival and at the Olympic Culture Festival in Lillehammer • From 1995 to 1997 project director of the worldwide opera tours of «Arena di Verona» • Since 1996 guest lecturer for Cultural and Media Management: Hochschule für Musik «Hanns Eisler» Berlin, now FU Berlin • From 1998 to 2002 managing director and artistic director of the Bremen concert hall «Die Glocke» and managing director of the Bremen Music Festival • From 2004 to 2013 artistic and managing director of the Beethovenfest Bonn (awards included: Cultural Brand Award in the category «Cultural Brand 2012») • Since 2004 active supporter of «El Sistema» and Dr José Antonio Abreu, Venezuela • From 2005 to 2007 jury member of the German Federal Cultural Foundation • Since 2007 jury member of the Ernst-von-Siemens Music Foundation Committee activities: incl. board member of the Beethoven-Haus Bonn, advisor in the German Music Council, member of the University Council of the University of Bonn Roughly one hundred musicians from 20 countries represent the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and play 50 different programmes in more than 100 concerts each season.
