A HISTORY OF INNOVATION
Rucksacks are a vital part of any outdoor kit
and a vital part of the Berghaus story. For
almost 50 years Berghaus has been at the
forefront of innovation in outdoor performance
products and it’s our rucksack developments
that have produced some of our most groundbreaking and revolutionary designs.
Mountaineers Peter
Lockey and Gordon
Davison found LD
Mountain Centre, to
fill the gap in the UK
market for high-quality

quickly launched

calling it ‘Berghaus’.
The first Berghaus

Fit Guide - BIOFIT
One of the most important things to get right on a hiking backpack is the fit – our consumers told us that this is the most
important thing they look for and nothing ruins a hiking trip like a backpack that is constantly uncomfortable. With that in mind,
we’ve incorporated our BIOFIT™ back system into our new Trail packs, to give a bespoke fit and increased comfort.
1. Slacken off the shoulder straps, hipbelt, top tension, chest strap and hipbelt side tension (if applicable) - this makes it easier to get a good fit.
2. Next, put the rucksack on and seat the hipbelt onto your hips. The hipbelt position can be adjusted depending on personal preference, but a good start point is to seat the middle of the long axis of the hipbelt over the Iliac Crest
on the pelvis.
3. Adjust the shoulder straps so that the wrap-over section
of the harness is on top of the shoulder.

4. Pull the BIOFIT™ back length adjustment webbing down to make the shoulder straps wrap comfortably over
your shoulders.

5. After adjusting the back length, check to see what the likely angle of the top tension webbing will be. If the webbing take off point is below the shoulders then you should use the upper top tension take off points. If the webbing is at a very steep angle then you can try to lower take off point, which will reduce the angle and improve comfort.
6. Lastly, adjust the top tension straps and the hipbelt side tension straps so that they are just tensioned. If you pull them too tight this can cause discomfort.

TRAIL SPEED: OUR COOLEST RUCKSACK EVER
Our innovative new Trail Speed rucksacks were created using body mapping principles researched by our
MtnHaus® design and development team and are our coolest, most ventilated rucksacks ever. Built around
the new Freeflow Air back system – an evolution of our Freeflow® technology – the Trail Speed offers more
ventilation than any Berghaus pack before it. We’ve removed the mesh from the back system entirely, minimising
the contact points between rucksack and back to create greater air circulation at the centre of the back.
The result is maximum breathability and a lower body temperature beneath the rucksack.

BODY MAPPED COMFORT
Over the last two years, the MtnHaus team have done extensive
research in to body mapping, analysing which areas of the body
produce the most heat and using this information to design
clothing that works in harmony with these temperature variations.
When creating our SS15 rucksack range, we realised that these
same principles can be used in rucksack design.
We went out on the hill to test this new design, using thermal imaging equipment to record the temperature of the
wearer’s back during use and using our original Freeflow® packs as a point of reference. The testing showed that
the superior ventilation of the Trail Speed reduced body temperature by up to 3⁰C compared to other ventilated
rucksacks such as the Freeflow® – a significant reduction that will offer greater comfort during use.
Using a thermal imaging camera to look at body heat, we can
clearly see that the centre of the back is a major hot spot and
somewhere that could quickly become uncomfortable during
exertion if that heat isn’t allowed to escape.
The Trail Speed improves ventilation to the centre back area,
allowing heat to escape and offering improved comfort to the
user, making it ideal for users who want to move quickly in the
hills and mountains.

has three phases: the start, the descent and halt or solidifying phase.

How does the ABS® system work?
When in motion, larger objects will always move to the top. This is also true in an avalanche. The
rotating snow crystals creep under your body and push you upwards. But because of your higher
weight by volume, this upward movement will then cease and you will sink back into the snow.
In order to avoid being buried in an avalanche, you must increase your volume. With a single pull
of the activation handle, an additional 170 l of volume is inflated to help you stay on the surface.
The streamlined ABS® TwinBags generate unparalleled dynamic lift during all phases of the avalanche,
preventing you from sinking back into the snow, and during the crucial halt and solidification phase,
they keep you in the most horizontal position possible. All these criteria help you stay on the surface.
