Arts as Cultural Diplomacy: A Forum for Young Leaders The Role of the Arts in Shaping Europe‟s Future INSTITUTE FOR CULTURAL DIPLOMACY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL PARLIAMENT 11th July 2010 – 17th July 2010 Berlin Arts as Cultural Diplomacy: A Forum for Young Leaders The Role of the Arts in Shaping Europe’s Future Dear Participants, We are delighted to welcome you to the inaugural seminar: “The Arts as Cultural Diplomacy: A Forum for Young Leaders”. Through the course of the seminar, we will examine the concept of Cultural Diplomacy through the media of the Arts. Arts as Cultural Diplomacy: A Forum for Young Leaders | 11th July 2010 – 17th July 2010 We will endeavour to explore how a better understanding between cultures can be brought about through art. Art takes many different forms, transcends genre, age and frontiers and is thought provoking. It is a witness to the ever-changing societies of its past, present and future. We want to give you the opportunity to enjoy discussions and exchanges with professionals and future professionals of the art world, to ponder about how best to use the Arts as a diplomatic tool. What has been done to this effect and how successful it was and can be in the future. 1 Throughout this week, you will be able to learn from the experience of artists as well as policy-makers. We will take a deeper look at the framework regulating the diffusion of cultural products as well as the process of elaborating art and exporting it to different countries and cultures. Through a series of lectures, discussions and workshops, you will have the opportunity to actively participate in this seminar and ask questions, as well as give answers. As a participant, you will find yourself among people as eager as you to learn more about the cultural sector and the possibility to involve themselves and adopt a leadership attitude in this field. But apart from discussing art as a tool for Cultural Diplomacy, we also want to make sure that you get to experience the wealth that Berlin has to offer as one of the most culturally diverse cities in Europe. In Berlin, you will see that art is present all around, from street art and tags, to jam sessions in parks, the theatre and the opera. We look forward to welcoming you and sharing this week with you. The BVG is the transportation service in Berlin, which provides a journey planner on its website: http://www.bvg.de/index.php/en/index.html 20 Some of the locations we will be visiting : Kunsthaus Tacheles The Kunsthaus Tacheles, is a former department store which now houses a self-organised collective of artists in Berlin-Mitte. Constructed in 1908, the building was used as a passage to connect Friedrichstraße and Oranienburger Straße. Increasingly used by Nazi party members in the early 1930s and the building was heavily damaged during World War II, though a large portion of it survived intact. The building was scheduled to be demolished in April 1990. Therefore some artists that took over the building a few months before prevented the demolition. Due to the individualistic character of the building and the mass of creative activities taking place, the Tacheles soon became famous. Right from the start, Tacheles was a centre of development and realization of individual ways of thinking, of the creative contamination of art and living as well as the testing of artistic and urban ideas. Many international artists staged performances or concerts here, exhibited paintings, sculptures and installations. Among the early exhibitors were artist Mark Divo, sculptors the Mutoid Waste Company, musicians Spiral Tribe, theatre group DNTT, performance artist Lennie Lee, dancer/ choreographer Sasha Waltz, Ramm Theater, and many others. RADIALSYSTEM V Arts as Cultural Diplomacy: A Forum for Young Leaders | 11th July 2010 – 17th July 2010 Formerly Berlin's largest pumping station, the RADIALSYSTEM V (pictured below) was opened in September 2006, as a new creative space for the arts in Berlin. It currently functions as a cultural centre where new ideas 'radiate' out in all directions, attracting artists and the public from within as well as beyond the city limits of Berlin. 21 The conceptual direction of RADIALSYSTEM V is closely connected to the structure and aesthetics of the building, a successful symbiosis of old and new, and of tradition and modernity. Moreover, it follows the principle 'form follows function', revealing a clear and simple use of space. Using the empty rooms as a starting point, all areas can be used flexibly and can be transformed as needed. Working with artists, ensembles, and other partners, RADIALSYSTEM V strives to develop genre spanning, innovative artistic formats, setting them into practice. Various art forms meet in the creative process, inspiring one another, with special emphasis placed on contemporary dance and early music. The ensembles Sasha Waltz & Guests, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Vocalconsort Berlin and Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop are closely connected to the house in the rehearsal and production processes, performing regularly at RADIALSYSTEM V. RADIALSYSTEM V. is well known as a place for innovative art performances of high quality. There you'll find a gathering of people having a lot of fun, lying around in the sun, finding great bargains at the Flea Market and then sitting with a cool drink to enjoy the Karaoke. Karaoke at Mauerpark is a longstanding rendezvous that Berliners have every Sunday. Sitting on the grass or in the stands, they listen to any brave singers and sing along. Fun and clapping guaranteed! That's my tip! Joanna: Club der Visionäre, this bar resembles everything Berlin stands for. It is a street style bar at the riverside with an outdoor deck area. Come along and drink a cocktail while dipping your feet in the water. http://clubdervisionaererecords.com/ Frankie: Take advantage of the riverside bars in Friedrichshain while you still have the chance – the planned development of this stretch of the Spree will see old favourites like Bar 25, Yaam and Club Maria closing down in the not too distant future. One of the aims of the Seminar is to enable dialogue between people from different cultural backgrounds, and we therefore hope above all that you will be willing to share your ideas, experiences and expertise during the seminars and workshops. We are working to a very tight schedule this week, so punctuality is extremely important. We will have designated meeting places near the locations, and we expect you to be on time so that sessions can start promptly and enough time is left for discussion. As a city, Berlin is very spread out so please allow enough time to reach the meeting points. Moreover, we suggest the participants prepare a ten minutes presentation about a topic related to the seminar; it represents an important occasion for the exchange of ideas and self-improvement. They should prepare some questions for the speakers as well, so that you can have an active and interesting participation in the seminar.. What do I do for lunch? We will try to ensure you have fairly long lunch breaks to give you time to chat about the morning session. We will recommend a couple of nearby cafes or restaurants at the end of each session and encourage you to eat together! Yes! Alongside academic lectures and discussions, there will be social events, such as dinner arrangements scheduled throughout the week. Although these dinners are not mandatory in regard to attendance, they are great opportunities to enjoy different cuisines with your fellow participants and engage in conversation about the days„ events. Suggestions will be given on places to go after each dinner in case you desire further evening entertainment. On Thursday evenings, Berlin„s museums are free to the public from 18.00 to 22.00. Where does my 195 Euro participation cost g o? The ICD is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, which relies on private sponsorship and donations, and the support of a number of volunteers and interns. Your money goes towards the cost of developing and running the seminar (marketing, overheads, human resources, refreshments). Please note that the tuition fee does not cover accommodation, food & drink, or transport during the Weeklong Seminar.
