Dear Sir or Madam,
dear friends,
The Fifth WTO Ministerial Conference in Cancun, Mexico, ended
without consensus in September this year. The failure was caused
by the unbridgeable opposing views regarding the so-called Singapore issues (trade and investment, trade and competition policy, trade facilitation and transparency in government procurement). Nevertheless, it became clear that the negotiations on
agriculture will continue to be a key issue in bringing this world
trade round to a successful conclusion. The world trade round
launched in November 2001 under the „Doha Development Agenda“ has suffered a setback with the failure of the Cancun conference. At the moment, it is difficult to imagine the round concluding on schedule in 2005.
■
What must be done to enable the negotiations to continue
successfully?
