Eine Legende, von Legenden umrankt:
das Raffles Hotel in Singapur. Es ist eine
der berühmtesten Luxusherbergen der
Welt, die wohl reinste Verkörperung
des kolonialen Grandhotels. Sein Name
weckt Mythen einer vergangenen Zeit.
Eine Investition von 160 Millionen Singapur-Dollar (rund 107 Millionen Euro)
verschaffte der Legende einen Lift ins
dritte Jahrtausend. Heute präsentiert sich
das Raffles als eines der aufregendsten
Stadthotels auf dem Globus. Dabei klopft
sein nostalgisches Herz, als wäre es einem Jungbrunnen entsprungen.
Raffles Hotel in Singapore is a legend
swathed in legends. It is one of the most
renowned luxury hotels in the world, the
quintessential Grand Hotel of colonial
times. Its very name evokes myths of a
past era but recent investment of 160
million Singapore dollars has lifted the
legend into the third millennium. The
Raffles Hotel of today is one of the most
exciting city hotels on the face of the
globe.Yet, its nostalgic heart still beats as
if it had just emerged from the fountain

Somerset Maugham said that
Raffles was a metaphor for all “the
fables of the exotic East”. Maugham stayed at the hotel on Singapore’s Beach Road during the
1920s and 1930s and before him,
in the 19th century, Joseph Conrad
and Rudyard Kipling were guests
there not long after the Sarkies
brothers founded the place in
1887. It started life as a spacious
bungalow which only had ten
guest rooms, but it was soon
extended by the addition of two
large two-storey wings. Conrad

described the hotel as being “as
airy as a birdcage”, and Kipling
commented on the wonderful cuisine which it has had since the
very beginning. He appealed to
visitors to Singapore to “feed at
Raffles”!
Soon after that the famous Palm

only added the notable verandah

makes Raffles an oasis in the
middle of Singapore’s skyscrapers.
Finally in 1899, Tigran Sarkies the
hotel’s first director built the

trademark, and in 1904 he opened

The Raffles sensation took off. The
daily paper lauded it as “the grandest establishment of its kind east
of Suez”. When in 1920 a large
ballroom was added, Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and the Prince of Wales danced alongside rubber plantation
owners, colonial officers, globetrotters and other Raffles guests
in the “finest ballroom in the East”.

Gebäude sei „so luftig wie ein Vogelkäfig“, und
Kipling markierte unmittelbar nach seinem
Besuch die von Beginn an brillante Küche.
Sein Appell an Singapur-Besucher: „Feed at
Raffles!“ – „Speisen Sie im Raffles!“ – wurde
sprichwörtlich.
Bald darauf entstand der berühmte Palm

ersten jener Innenhöfe entstehen, die, üppig begrünt mit tropischer Flora, das Raffles heute zu

der den Westen wie den Osten bereist hatte, und
der seine Patienten mit Vorliebe im Bar & Billard Room kurierte, vorzugsweise mit einem
steifen Scotch.
1987 wurde das Raffles zum NationalMonument erklärt. Gerade noch rechtzeitig, wie
es scheint, denn es machten Gerüchte die
Runde, das Raffles sollte abgerissen werden. Die
Legende war im Begriff, sich zu überleben. Im
Palm Court z. B., dessen Stille einst Somerset
Maugham die Muße gab, seine „CasuarinaTree“-Stories zu schreiben, hatte sich ein Swimming Pool breitgemacht, und die modernen
internationalen Hotels, die in der Umgebung
hochschossen, machten der alternden Diva
harte Konkurrenz.
Die Wiedergeburt ereignete sich 1991.
Nach einer zweieinhalbjährigen, von 160 Millionen Singapur-Dollar getragenen Renovierungs- und Umbauphase erstand das alte neue
Raffles wie ein Phönix aus der Asche: prachtvoller denn je, mit all seinen legendären Marksteinen in neuer Blüte und zugleich neu definiert
als spektakuläre Lifestyle-Destination des dritten
Jahrtausends.
Schließlich ließ Tigran Sarkies, der erste
Direktor, 1899 das prachtvolle zweistöckige
Hauptgebäude hochziehen, dessen Neorenaissancefassade international zum Markenzeichen
wurde, und 1904 eröffnete er den Bras Basah
Wing. Der Flügel an der Bras Basah Road schuf
in den oberen Etagen Raum für weitere 20 Suiten und im Parterre Platz für die ersten Ladengeschäfte des Raffles.
Jetzt startete Singapurs Hotelsensation
durch zum ersten Gipfel seines Ruhms. „Das
großartigste Etablissements seiner Art östlich
von Suez“, jubelte eine aktuelle Tageszeitung,
und als 1920 ein großer Ballsaal angebaut
wurde, tanzten Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford und der Prince of Wales

Fabeln und Legenden entstanden wie die
Geschichte vom letzten Tiger Singapurs, einem
entflohenen Zirkustier, das 1902 unter dem Bar
& Billard Room, der ältesten Raffles-Bar, erlegt
wurde, die Story von der Entstehung des berühmten Singapore Sling in der Long Bar (das
Rezept des Cocktails ist nur deshalb überliefert,
weil es seinerzeit ein Gast schnell auf der Rechnung notierte), oder die Schnurren über Doc

In 1987 Raffles was declared a
National Monument, just in time it
seems because rumours that the
hotel was going to be demolished
abounded. However, the hotel had
already embarked on the process
of securing its own survival. A

clientele. It is a tourist attraction
of extraordinary interest. The old
grandfather clock still stands in the
same place as it did over a hundred
years ago, between the entrance
arch and the rendezvous area.
When it strikes eight o’clock in the
evening, the pianist at the Writer’s
Bar in front of the entrance to the
Raffles Grill strikes up “I’ll see you
again ...”. The old colonial
farewell, “see you at Raffles”, is
“in“ again. The public area ends at

sie nie weg gewesen, lockt die alte Standuhr zwischen den Entrée-Bögen zum Rendezvous wie
vor über hundert Jahren, und wenn sie acht Uhr
abends schlägt, intoniert die Pianistin neben der
Writers Bar, vorm Eingang zum Raffles Grill:
„I’ll see you again ...“.
„See you at Raffles“ – Wir treffen uns im
Raffles“ – der alte Gruß aus der Kolonialzeit gilt
wieder. Am Ende der Lobby freilich, am Fuß des
stilvoll restaurierten, doppelten Treppenhauses,
ist der öffentliche Bereich vorerst zu Ende. „For
residents only“, so der Hinweis auf dem ovalen
Holzschild. Man spricht im Raffels bewusst von
Residenten, nicht von Hotelgästen, und entsprechend privat ist die Atmosphäre gehalten auf
den Flügeln mit den 103 Suiten (es gibt ausschließlich Suiten, keine Einzel- oder Doppelzimmer). Man erreicht sie auch heute über die
Veranda-Arkaden mit ihren polierten Teakböden, den weißen Säulen und Balustraden zu den
Tropengärten der Innenhöfe hin, dem Fern
Court mit seinen typischen, südostasiatischen
Farngewächsen, der Lawn (ideal für Empfänge
und Veranstaltungen) und dem Palm Court.
Letzterer ist wieder nur Park, kein Swimmingpool mehr, for residents only. Somerset Maugham hätte seine Freude.

Malraux usw. bis zum chilenischen Dichter und
Nobelpreisträger Pablo Neruda. Mit all den
anderen Suiten haben sie Ambiancen im eleganten klassischen Kolonialstil gemeinsam.
1915, die Zeit, als der Ruhm des Raffles den
ersten Gipfel erreichte, war das Referenzjahr für
die innenarchitektonische Erneuerung. Also finden wir üppige, feine Behaglichkeit: orientalische Teppiche, Stoffe in leuchtenden Farben,
Parkett und Möbel aus Teak, die guten alten
Ventilatoren an den über vier Meter hohen Plafonds bieten sich als Ergänzung oder Alternative
zur Klimaanlage an. Es gibt einen Speisesalon,
ein Schlafzimmer, ein geräumiges Ankleidezimmer mit großen Spiegeln und zwei Waschbecken, es geht über ins komfortable Marmorbad.

Für luxuriöseste Ansprüche empfehlen sich die
Grand Suites, die Sarkies und Sir Stamford
Raffles Suite. Auch hier viele Antiquitäten, Art
Deco, Viktorianisches, blaues Chinaporzellan.
Eine vergangene Epoche weht durch die Räume,
in Szene gesetzt mit postmoderner Frische. Es
gibt ein umfangreiches Inventar von antiken
Stücken, die wie die Großvateruhr am Eingang
immer schon im Raffles waren. Sie sind verstreut über alle Interieurs und zu erkennen an
einem kleinen ovalen Messingschildchen, herrliche chinesische Vasen sind darunter, auch
einer der beiden historischen Billardtische im
Bar & Billard Room.
Ohne historisches Vorbild, aber ebenfalls
dem diskreten Bereich der Hausgäste vorbehalten: das Amrita Spa (Amrita war ein sagenhafter
Jungbrunnen der Hindugötter), ein Fitness- und
Wellness-Sanktuarium der Extraklasse, mit acht
Behandlungssuiten, ganzheitlicher Heilphilosophie, Spa-Restaurant, Hightech-Fitnessraum
und einem idyllischen Pool mit SkyscraperBlick.
Soweit das Zuhause für die Residenten fern
