E. Eapen earned his M. S. in Journalism from the Syracuse University in Summer 1957. Between then and his returning to India to chair the Department of Journalism, Nagpur University, in June 1958, he worked for number of U.S. dailies. He took his Ph. D. in Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin, Summer 1969, and soon after joined the Ford Foundation. Delhi, as a Specialist in Communication, at its Intensive Agricultural Development Programme unit. Since September 1970 Dr. Eapen has been co-ordinating a research project in Zambia and Indonesia for the Centre for Mass Communication Research, University of Leicester, England, the final report of which was completed in Summer 1972. He has contributed many pieces on the problems of the Indian communications system for a scholarly publications, including the Gazette. Dennis Howitt is a Research Officer at the Centre for Mass Communication Research at the University of Leicester, England. He graduated from Brunel University, England, and did post-graduate research in social psychology at the University of Sussex. Most of his publications are in the field of the effects of the mass media on the audience. Currently he is engaged in a study of the relationship between the broadcasting media and society. The article, which is published in this issue, is one of several carried out at the Centre as part of a special project on violence over the last few years. An overview of this research project will be published in bookform probably in 1973. Dr. Hansjiirgen Koschr~itz, born in 1933, studied modern languages and political science. From 1962 until 1968 he taught at several schools and universities and at present he teaches at the University of G6ttingen (West-Germany). He wrote several articles and a book ’Pressepolitik und Partei-journalismus in der USSR und der Volksrepublik China’ (Press policy and party journalism in the USSR and the People’s Republic of China). ,
