I`ve been nurturing this character for the past ten
For 10 years the Bogobiri Experience has transformed
the cultural landscape and imagination of thousands
of local and international visitors to Lagos. We have
evolved from a small Afrocentric boutique hotel into a
dynamic cultural hub. Today’s Bogobiri has grown into
a unique conduit for Nigerian art, music, food, culture
and drama.
We are so grateful to all the friends of Bogobiri for
your continued support over the years. It has not
always been plain sailing but we have had a lot laughs,
met some amazing people and learnt quite a lot!
To mark this milestone of 10 years this November
2013 we have conceived a colourful series of events
for the whole month of November. These events will
be known as the BOGOBIRI ARTS FESTIVAL and will
comprise art exhibitions, music concerts, literary days,
theatre and spoken word.
The vision of the BOGOBIRI ARTS FESTIVAL is to
condense ten years of experiencing Bogobiri into one
memorable month of performances.
We want to thank our staff and all of those who have
kept us standing for the last ten years.
We look forward to celebrating with you.
Thank you!

Few artists have been as crucial to the invention,
development, and popularization of Afro-pop as
Orlando Julius. Starting in the ’60s, Julius was fusing
traditional African sounds and rhythms with those of
American pop, soul, and R&B.

JONES
around the world for over twenty years since his
debut album Blufunk Is a Fact was released in
1993. His sixth studio album, Captain Rugged, is
set to be released on November 4 and is based
on a fictitious superhero character who patrols
the busting streets of Lagos city. The album is
described as dark psychedelic Afro-funk, and is
part of an audible soundtrack of a comic book
character featured in his own graphic novel of the
same title, to be released with the album.
The superhero’s name is ‘Captain Rugged’ and
is the outspoken narrator, guiding us through
musical discourse on politics, modern Africa
and its urban movements around the world—
much like his idol Fela Anikulapo Kuti did. Jones
explains, “I’ve been nurturing this character for
the past ten years. This superhero business is a
satire on power, politics and magic. I’m telling
the epic story of refugees, immigration and
exile, I wanted to portray these personalities as
particularly rugged and robust: they’re survivors,
superheroes, African superheroes. That was my
ambition for this album”.
“What I want to show the world is the modernity
of post-colonial Africa, far from the image
that the western world carries of a continent
devastated by famine and or war. I’m talking
about young urban Africa: 20 million people living
in Lagos! Modern contemporary African culture is
a reality today and African culture has proven its
vivacity and is nourished by the Diaspora. In
terms of creativity and history, you look at Brazil,
Cuba, all across North and South America and
Europe, people have taken from West Africa—
we have a global presence that we are only just
starting to realize, culturally, spiritually and
musically.
“I’ve been nurturing this
character for the past ten
years.
The new album will be released in Lagos on
Saturday November 9th as part of Bogobiri’s 10th
year Anniversary celebrations.

WILLIAM
ONYEABOR
SAT 16TH NOV. 2013
The greatest musician you probably
never heard of. Born outside Enugu,
he created his own genre of African
electronic funk in the late 70s and early
80s, making music completely unique
for his time. Today, he is reaching cult
status among a growing list of admirers,
including everyone from Damon Albarn
and Hot Chip to Carl Craig and Madlib,
with some likening him to the Kraftwerk
of West Africa, or a precursor to LCD
Soundsystem.
More than 30 years after original release, William Onyeabor will be coming
on Luaka Bop, the iconic record label
founded by Talking Heads’ David Byrne,
and celebrated around the world with
a week’s of parties and events. William
Onyeabor will be celebrated at the
Bogobiri Arts Festival in conjuction with
Luaka Bop. Not to be missed!

A celebration of the Palmwine Guitar, i.e the Folk Music
of the musty creeks, shanties and back streets of West
Africa, was one of the first hybrid fusions of native
African and Western music. The Guitar was introduced
into African music by Portuguese and Spanish sailors to
the coastal urban centres of Africa and was mastered
by pioneer African musicians (equally influenced by
Caribbean music), and can rightly claim to be the
ancestor of later formats such as Highlife, Soukous,
Makossa, Juju etc
Araba , Sally Young, Prince David Bull, I.K.Belemu and
many more. Ikenga features a collection of veterans of
some of Nigeria’s greatest bands, through the years -

her upcoming album ‘The Lagos Music Salon’ soon to be
released by Sony Music. We can’t say too much about the
show but we can tell you that its going to be a theatrical
fusion of synth and acoustic instruments performed live by
more than a dozen musicians. Think “Empire of the Sun”
meets “Hot Chip” with Sade-like minimalist vocals.

RUBY
A talented singer and songwriter, gifted with a distinctive,
understated but emotionally resonant vocal style, Ese
Peters is a unique and original musical talent who has
developed a dedicated following among music lovers drawn
by his musical explorations of the various dimensions to
love, hope and faith.
Ruby was born to sing! With a 4-Octave range voice,
this song bird reaches amazing notes which reverberate
and stirs the soul. Ngohide RubyAnn GyangGyang was
introduced to soul music by her father. While in Jos, she
met Choc Boiz, M.I and Jesse Jagz. They forged a bond of
friendship and their relationship has helped a great deal in
birthing who Ruby is today. Her music tells stories of life- of
pain, passion, longing and love-about all the mystery and
wonder life is. Her songs reflect the same depth and beauty
as those she grew up listening to. She has spent the last 16
months creating a sound with a mix of soul, urban house,
traditional music and afro-beat. She has performed her
debut single ‘Okay’ at several events in Lagos and is steadily
building a dedicated fan base that loves Ruby music.
Armed with nothing more than a warm voice and an
acoustic guitar, Ese considers himself a romantic storyteller
and sees his music as the perfect medium for conveying his
narratives to his audience and also coping with an uncertain
world. To him, music is “political, spiritual and mental
liberation”, and he sees his mission in life as “changing
the world, one song at a time”. He is signed to AbOriginal
Music.
She won 2 awards for Best vocal performance (Female) and
Best collaboration with MI on ‘Heart of the City’ along with
SDC, in the Tosin Adeda’s Naija Music Awards in December
2012.Ruby is passionate about child development and
women empowerment/enlightenment initiatives. She
is currently signed to MI Abaga’s LOOPY MUSIC. Ruby
is taking no prisoners as she conquers the music industry
with her distinct sound. However, she continues to push
boundaries as seen in her new single “Down”. The song is
jointly written by Ruby, Jude Abaga & TeddyTemz and it
has elements of traditional African sounds, house and soul
music. She is presently working on her self-titled album

He began his career in arts in 1964 as one of the
original members and the first generation of the
famous Osogbo Art School initiated by Professor
Ulli Beier and his wife Mrs Georgina Beier. He was
also a founding member of the late Duro Ladipo
Theatre Company as an actor and musician. He toured
with the group to Berlin Festival of Art (Berliner

Arts Festival in Britain in 1965. Artist in Residence and
Fellow of The National Black Theatre in Harlem, New

Chief Oyelami did Technical Theatre course at
Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (then University
of Ife) with specialization in Theatre-Design where
he also taught traditional music between 1975 and
1987. While on a study leave from Ife, Chief Muraina
Oyelami was a guest Professor in African Studies
at the University of Bayreuth’s IWALEWA-HAUS,
Germany during the winter semester of 1981/82.
A man of two worlds, he is known by many as a
master visual artist while others know him as a great
performing artist. Described as a poetic painter with
romantic approach, his works grow out of specific
experiences (portraits, stories, folktales, landscapes
and recent happenings).
We are delighted to celebrate our 10th anniversary
with such a great artist. ‘Reflecting On the Old and
Looking To the New’ will exhibit works from private
collectors in addition to works commissioned for this
exhibition. As we look to the new and the next ten
years we remember the journey and the lesson of the

A singer, multi-instrumentalist

people and nature.
From the most talented, to most enthusiastic; each
thursday ushers in a wide array of people I’ve come to
know as friends and family as we bask in the euphoria of
a mish-mash of music doused with a bit of madness. Its
a place where you walk in and let your hair down after a
long day at work - literally, as the live beat runs through
your head. The people are kindred and the spirit is
infectious. If you attend once, then you’re likely to repeat
this a 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th.
Its always a pleasure to reconnect during the day at
various places with loud hellos, handshakes, oohs

acknowledgement to say: ‘I see you partner in crime’!
