These technologies include hybrid solutions for the powertrains of medium and heavy trucks and the recovery of waste heat from the exhaust tract. “Apart from Euro VI, we are focusing on further reducing commercial vehicles’ CO2 emissions. Moreover, the additional fuel savings associated with these new technologies will mean real cost advantages for fleet operators in the future,” said Dr. Markus Heyn, president of the Diesel Systems division at Robert Bosch GmbH. And wherever an infrastructure exists for compressed natural gas as an alternative fuel, Bosch believes that monovalent and bivalent CNG systems have a promising future. This is also a question of complying with future emissions legislation in countries such as China or India, which take their lead from EU legislation. “This is why we offer injection and exhaust-gas treatment systems which are specially adapted to these growth markets,” Heyn said. Extensive hybrid expertise from the passenger-car segment When designing hybrid solutions for commercial-vehicle powertrains, Bosch draws on its experience in the passenger-car segment, where production vehicles already feature Bosch electric motors, power electronics, and engine management systems. Bosch engineers are working on parallel full-hybrid technology that can be integrated into a commercial vehicle’s drive train without taking up a lot of space. When driving long distances and on multi-drop delivery runs, electrical energy can be recuperated when driving downhill or braking, and temporarily stored in a high-voltage battery. When the truck drives uphill or starts off, this energy drives an electric motor that supports the internalcombustion engine. “We calculate that this can reduce consumption by some six percent on long-distance journeys, and by as much as 20 percent on delivery runs,” Heyn says. Recovering waste heat from the exhaust tract A concept for converting the waste heat in the exhaust tract into electrical or mechanical energy offers a potential fuel saving of roughly five percent. Today, roughly a part of the primary energy used is lost via the exhaust as waste heat. Some of this energy can be recovered in a waste heat recovery (WHR) system, using a steam power cycle. The waste heat in the exhaust is used to generate steam, which drives an expansion machine. The mechanical energy gained as a result can be used to drive the crankshaft, either directly or via a gear unit. Alternatively, the expansion machine can drive a generator that supplies electrical energy to the on-board vehicle network or a hybrid powertrain’s traction battery. Bosch is currently developing various designs for an expansion machine, which is the main energy-conversion component. CRSN3: enhanced common-rail system delivering 2,500 bar In its latest CRSN3-25 version, maximum pressure in the CRSN3 injection system for medium and heavy trucks has been increased to 2,500 bar. Thanks to the optimized air-fuel mix, raw emissions are reduced. With a pressure-balanced interior, the innovative injector concept features an especially high level of hydraulic efficiency. In conjunction with exhaust-gas recirculation systems and SCR catalytic converters, Bosch high-pressure injection systems play a considerable part in reducing consumption and nitrogen oxide emissions. For example, the Denoxtronic exhaust-gas treatment system developed by Bosch allows nitrogen oxide emissions to be reduced by as much as 95 percent. Variant 6.5 of this system has been adapted to the special requirements of emerging markets. There is also Departronic, a proven system that injects a controlled amount of fuel into the exhaust tract to govern the regeneration of the particulate filter. Bosch common-rail systems, as well as Denoxtronic and Departronic, help commercial-vehicle manufacturers to comply with the US 10 and Euro VI emissions targets. Page 2 of 3 PI7760 CNG as an alternative fuel for commercial vehicles Spark-ignition and diesel engines that can also run on compressed natural gas are gaining in significance in the commercial-vehicle segment. CNG is especially eco-friendly. CNG engines emit up to 25 percent less CO2 than conventional diesel engines. Moreover, CNG is less expensive than conventional fuel. Commercial-vehicle operators thus benefit from the lower running cost of a CNG engine. Bosch supplies components and systems for three different approaches to using CNG. First, for monovalent engines. These are engines that run exclusively on CNG, and which are mainly found in urban vehicles such as buses or garbage collection vehicles. Second, for the dual-fuel engines to be found in medium and heavy trucks, where gas and diesel are burned simultaneously. When using this system, CNG can be used instead of diesel as much as 90 percent of the time. Third, for the bivalent engines used in light trucks. Their modified spark-ignition engines can be run either on CNG or gasoline. Both bivalent systems and dual-fuel engines offer greater independence in areas where the gas infrastructure is not so dense, since they can run purely on diesel or gasoline without any restriction. Using vehicle system analysis, components and systems can be systematically tested without having to be removed. The heavyweights on offer are lift platforms for transporters, tire balancing and assembly systems, and brake testing even for heavy trucks. Diesel Components in Original Equipment Quality Bosch supplies diesel systems as original equipment for all major commercial vehicle manufacturers. The range of spare parts, for current common rail and pump-nozzle systems as well as for classic diesel components, is also correspondingly comprehensive. Nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) from diesel motors must generally be reduced to comply with the Euro 5 standard. Therefore Bosch has developed the Denoxtronic exhaust gas after-treatment system for original equipment. For the retrofitting of commercial vehicles, Bosch offers the Denoxtronic2 retrofit system, which reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90 percent. The retrofit solution also pays off from an economic point of view, as the Denoxtronic system reduces fuel consumption by up to 5 percent and commercial vehicles that comply with the Euro 5 standard also save two cents per kilometer on German freeway tolls. Value Repairs with the Bosch eXchange Program With its eXchange parts program, Bosch offers an alternative for the current value oriented repair of commercial vehicles, at around 30 percent less than the cost of a new part with the same two-year guarantee. Over 800 remanufactured products are available for diesel injection systems alone; even for modern high-pressure injection systems. Additionally around 350 types of remanufactured starters and alternators are on offer. Durable Wearing Parts and Accessories for High Mileage Bosch offers a broad range of spare parts and accessories for commercial vehicles. The parts available range from drive belts and batteries to horns, filters, bulbs, sensors, wipers and auxiliary lights. All Bosch commercial vehicle parts are designed to meet the specific requirements of commercial vehicle use. One current program extension for commercial vehicles are high-performance ribbed V-belts, which are made from modern types of synthetic rubber and high-tech cords that can withstand extreme stress. More than 23 million Servolectric power steering systems have already been produced. Of these, around 2.6 million are made in the paraxial design with the highest steering rack force. With minor modifications, this electric power steering system can be adapted for light commercial vehicles. Compared with hydraulic steering systems, the ZF Lenksysteme Servolectric saves around 0.6 litres of fuel in the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) in urban traffic. A further advantage is the system capability, i.e. networking with electronic assistance systems. This means increased safety and convenience for the customer. 1 of 4 PI7786 Less fuel consumption - less carbon dioxide The ZF Lenksysteme Servolectric only needs power when the steering is activated. According to the latest measurements, the electric power steering system saves 0.6 litres of fuel in 100 km compared with hydraulic power steering systems. With an annual mileage of 25,000 km per year, this means a saving of 150 litres of fuel due to the steering alone. With a litre of diesel costing 1.40 euros, this amounts to 210 euros per year. There are also considerable potential savings with regard to CO2 emissions. The Servolectric produces 16.1 g/km less CO2 compared with hydraulic power steering. With an annual mileage of 25,000 km, this results in a saving of around 0.4 tonnes of CO2. The legislator has also decided to introduce an EU-wide CO2 penalty tax for commercial vehicles which emit more than 147 g/km CO2. This will come into force in 2014 with a limit of 175 g/km. A staggered introduction will ensure that the limit of 147 g/km is reached step-by-step by 2020. Here too, the Servolectric shows enormous savings potential. Power-on-demand The Servolectric is based on the principle of rack-andpinion steering which, in the case of electric steering, is linked to a servo unit and a highly developed electronics system. As soon as the driver initiates a steering movement, sensors register the appropriate steering torque and steering speed. From this data, a control unit calcu- 2 of 4 PI7786 lates the necessary steering assistance within milliseconds and the servo motor transmits the optimum torque via a recirculating ball gear to the rack of the mechanical rack-and-pinion steering. The power limit of this steering system corresponds to a steering axle load of more than 2,000 kg. However, the electric steering system in paraxial design introduced in 2006 offers even more advantages: the space-saving installation due to the absence of steering pump and hoses simplifies assembly and relieves the burden on the environment. Along with passenger car steering systems, the ZF-Servolectric now also covers light commercial vehicles (LCV) such as the Mercedes Sprinter and the Volkswagen Crafter. This versatile steering system can therefore be found in vehicles ranging from the mini class via the medium and luxury class to the transporter. System capability allows for safe driving The Servolectric can be networked with a number of external systems. Information gathered relating to the steering wheel angle is thus available to other systems such as ESP or an adaptive chassis controller. It also facilitates driving safety functions such as lane departure warning and lane change assistant. Depending on the driving situation, the appropriate system intervenes and recommends a steering correction to the driver by visual, acoustic or haptic signals. It is no longer necessary to hold the steering wheel when using the parking assistant feature.
