The inauguration of our fourth runway represents a major milestone at Frankfurt Airport and opens up new growth opportunities for our business partners. Previously, we launched our successful Great to Have You Here! initiative to improve the quality of service at FRA. The combination of new capacity and an enhanced service orientation is making Frankfurt Airport even stronger for the market demands of the future. Dear Reader, October 21, 2011, heralded the start of a new era at Frankfurt Airport. That was the momentous day when German Chancellor Angela Merkel personally inaugurated our new Runway Northwest. The new runway is incrementally creating the long-awaited additional capacity reserves we need to drive sustainable growth in the future. In addition, the new runway has already markedly improved flight punctuality at FRA. Frankfurt is by far Germany’s largest airport and one of Europe’s leading hubs. Two-thirds of all intercontinental air traffic in and out of Germany goes via FRA. This underscores our airport’s most important function: namely, to serve as the gateway to the world for Germany and the German economy. But to maintain this role, we depend on the right political climate and legal framework. Dr. Stefan Schulte Executive Board Chairman Our need to perform this gateway function is the reason why we are so concerned about the nighttime flight ban. Overnight cargo operations are essential in today’s increasingly international economy with its global division of labor. Thus, it is imperative for the German Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig to make a final decision on the nighttime flight issue as quickly as possible – one that fairly takes into account the interests of both the area’s residents and the airlines that operate from FRA to destinations around the world. Apart from that, we are very happy about the Fraport Group’s financial results. In the first three quarters of this year, our revenues rose by 9.4 percent while earnings (EBITDA) jumped 14 percent. We need this strong profitability to finance the ongoing large-scale projects at our Frankfurt home base, where we are continuing to invest almost €1 billion per year. Terminal 1’s new Pier A-Plus, scheduled to open in mid-2012, will power another quantum leap in improving the airport experience. We are also on the right track in the area of customer satisfaction. Surveys show that passengers and visitors are increasingly satisfied with our services. This reaffirms our commitment to the Great to Have You Here! service excellence program, which is delivering clear benefits not only for us but for our airlines and our other partners at Frankfurt Airport. I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! Sincerely, Dr. Stefan Schulte 03 Fraport World Fraport’s ground handling receives ISAGO certification German Chancellor inaugurates Runway Northwest Innovative handling system at Fraport Cargo Services 05 Fraport Cargo Services 08 Airline World Singapore Airlines launches A380 services from Frankfurt All Nippon Airways sends Dreamliner to FRA The world’s leading airline United expands 15 Future World 14 United Fraport expands winter service Hilton and Hilton Garden to open in The Squaire 18 People World Thierry Antinori heads Emirates’ sales worldwide Bettina Pürthner manages Swiss station at Frankfurt Airport airberlin appoints Helmut Himmelreich as COO 17 BVD The Squaire Hiltons 18 anniversay AviatonWorld_4-2011_lay4.indd 2 13.12.11 16:31 Fraport World 3 “Operational Excellence” project paying off Frankfurt Airport launched its “Operational Excellence” project a year and a half ago to prepare for large air traffic passenger volumes and ensure consistently high-quality operations in the future as well. Since the inauguration of the new “Runway Northwest”, it has been paying off by yielding its first benefits. The new runway has been smoothly integrated into the existing system without any operational problems. The additional traffic is being properly handled, and flight punctuality at Frankfurt Airport has already significantly improved as a result. When the project began, its team identified about 100 different processes at the airport that are crucial to everyday operations. More than 250 external partners and nearly all Fraport divisions were involved. Together they analyzed how each process would be affected by the expected increase in traffic and came up with ways to smooth the transition. Now that the new runway is operational, the project is focusing on the next milestone: the scheduled opening of the new A-Plus section of Terminal 1 in the summer of 2012. As one result of “Operational Excellence” the new runway has been smoothly integrated into the existing system. New numbers for Concourse A,Non-Schengen All gates on the Non-Schengen level of Terminal 1’s Concourse A have been assigned new numbers. Gates A51 to A65 have been renamed to Z11 to Z25. All gates on the Schengen level will keep their A numbers. The new numbers are a necessary step in getting ready for the upcoming inauguration of the new A-Plus section, which is scheduled for summer 2012 and will add another 25 gates including Schengen and Non-Schengen gates. The Non-Schengen gates there will also have Z numbers. Anyone can log on via Wi-Fi and surf the web. 30 minutes of free Internet at FRA Travelers and visitors can now enjoy 30 minutes of free wireless Internet access at Frankfurt Airport. Anyone can log on via Wi-Fi and surf the World Wide Web for half an hour free of charge. This new service is available via the Deutsche Telekom hotspots as part of the airport’s “Great to have you here!” service initiative. This comprehensive program was launched to raise the standard of service, comfort and convenience for travelers and visitors and make the time they spend at Frankfurt Airport a better experience. Internet users only need a mobile (cell) phone and an Internet-capable device. After selecting the corresponding wireless network and opening a browser window, a log-in portal appears. To receive the log-in data in a text message, they only need to enter their phone number. The Internet connection is terminated and the user automatically logged out after 30 minutes. Passengers and visitors can take advantage of the free Wi-Fi service once a day anywhere at Frankfurt Airport. As air traffic volumes increase, airport operations are also growing in complexity to cope with them. More and larger aircraft, an increase in ground support equipment, frequent construction work, and the need for faster turnaround times all pose challenges to operational safety. Fraport Cargo Services has worked for Adria Airways for more than 20 years. FCS extends contract with Adria Airways Modeled on the successful IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) program, the IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO) establishes the first internationally recognized standards for improving safety and reducing ground damage. When an audit shows that a ground service provider has implemented a compliant system, it is entered in the ISAGO Registry and awarded a corresponding certificate. Fraport AG has now received ISAGO certification from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for its ground handling services. ISAGO offers benefits to airlines, ground handlers, and both regulatory For the long haul: Adria Airways (JP) has and airport authorities. It introduces a extended its freight handling contract with uniform set of audit standards that are Fraport Cargo Services (FCS). With Adria Airways operates a fleet of 13 aircraft on flights from Ljubljana (LJU) and Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, to Frankfurt (FRA). It joined the Star Alliance in 2004. Adria Airways celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. In the fall of 2011, United Airlines – acting as ISAGO auditor – spent three days meticulously auditing Fraport AG’s ground handling services at Frankfurt Airport. The documentation and implementation of the following activities were evaluated: organization & management, load control, passenger handling, baggage handling, aircraft handling and loading, and aircraft ground movements. Occupational safety and security have top priority. In order to be listed in the ISAGO registry, the relevant processes must be documented and implemented in accordance with extremely strict requirements. The successful passing of this ISAGO audit marks a major milestone for Fraport AG. The audit will be repeated every two years, which obliges Frankfurt Airport’s operator to uphold and continually improve the high quality of the services it provides to its customers. Fraport Cargo Services donates to help children with cancer Merry Christmas! It is customary to send season’s greetings to customers and business partners every year. This year, however, Fraport Cargo Services (FCS) has decided to take the money it had set aside for all those Christmas cards and instead donate it to the pediatric cancer ward of the Frankfurt University Clinic. The donation is being made on behalf of the customers, business partners and AviatonWorld_4-2011_lay4.indd 4 employees of FCS, and will go toward supporting cancer research and treating young cancer patients. The new system has been operating since November. It incorporates many innovative new notions for increasing efficiency. FCS is also planning to invest in other, related projects in the near future. In response to rising costs and worsening capacity bottlenecks, Fraport Cargo Services decided to optimize the logistical processes in its import warehouse. The recently completed new conveyor system has improved the use of space and introduced a number of new concepts and innovations to help keep pace with growing demands and ensure the division’s competitiveness. to arriving trucks. This slashes the wait times for forwarders while greatly improving productivity and customer service. The system has been integrated into the SCOPE cargo handling system and can also be linked to external systems such as e-freight data interchange, customs, and ICS. Among other things, the number of rack systems has been increased. As a result, the storage capacity is greater than ever before. There is now also a separate area for large pallets, Europallets and extra-long cargo units. The number of storage bins for large pallets and Europallets has also grown to accommodate a much larger number. One of the biggest changes are new, more powerful forklift trucks. They were specially designed for FCS and are equipped with touch screens and scanners to speed work. They are also slimmer to permit them to move through easily through the new, narrower aisles. Some of them are rail-mounted. And all of them are energy-efficient. Higher shelves and an optimized computer system Winfried Hartmann, the managing director of FCS, sums up the benefits of the new logistics system as follows: “Optimizing space and processes is an ongoing challenge for us. The results of our latest project to enhance processes are 50% more storage space, a larger handling area, greater productivity, and faster delivery. This will let us provide better service to our customers.” The shelving system for Europallets has also been completely redesigned. The shelves are now higher and harmonized with the material flows, and the aisles are narrower. These systems are controlled by semiautomatic equipment. The computer system that monitors and controls everything has been optimized for the new material flows. The processes are now more efficient than ever before − for instance, data is transmitted faster to ensure quicker removal of items. Consignments are automatically consolidated, stocked and grouped. The nearest truck docks are immediately identified and assigned AviatonWorld_4-2011_lay4.indd 5 Customized forklift trucks All of the staff have of course also been thoroughly trained to ensure the quality and reliability of all processes from the start. Now much less manual work is involved, which cuts down on sources of error. In the future additional projects to optimize processes in other areas are already being planned. 13.12.11 16:31 6 Fraport World German Chancellor inaugurates new runway On October 21, 2011, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government Airbus A319 became the first aircraft to land on Frankfurt Airport’s fourth runway. The opening of the 2,800-meter-long “Runway Northwest” ensures the future of Germany’s leading gateway for international mobility. The inauguration ceremony was attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel; the governor of the state of Hesse, Volker Bouffier; the mayor of Frankfurt, Petra Roth; Lufthansa CEO Christoph Franz; and other business and political leaders. They were welcomed by Dr. Stefan Schulte, executive board chairman of Fraport, who stressed the importance of this infrastructure investment for Germany’s export-oriented economy. Airlines are already beginning to take advantage of the extra capacity that the new runway has made available. Frankfurt Airport’s 2011/2012 winter flight schedule includes extended services and new routes as a result. In the first phase of FRA’s planned capacity expansion, the number of flights will increase from an average of 83 an hour to up to 90 takeoffs and landings hourly. Total departures will climb by 3.7 percent a year, averaging 4,535 per week in the current winter season. Since September, Emirates SkyCargo has been deploying Boeing 777 freighters on it. The new connections to Tbilisi in Georgia and Astana, Almaty in Kazakhstan, and Samara in Russia can now also be reached more conveniently. The time change has been made possible by the inauguration of Fraport’s new northwest runway, which provides additional slot capacity. In addition to this South American service, Emirates SkyCargo operates seven other flights a week from FRA to DXB. This stepped-up frequency responds to the burgeoning trading volumes among Germany, the United Arab Emirates, and Brazil. The new third cargo flight boosts the airline’s weekly freight-carrying capacity to Brazil to 309 tonnes. A recently added third daily passenger service between Frankfurt and Dubai Emirates also adds cargo capacity on this route. This flight, operated with Boeing 777-300ERs and Airbus A330s, can carry between 17 and 23 tonnes. UAL’s later arrival in Kiew lets passengers from Frankfurt connect without a lengthy layover. By the end of next year, Air China will also install the new cabin product on its Airbus A330-200s. The cabin upgrade is part of Air China’s strategy for more comfort and service on board. The Canadian city of Toronto and Baltimore/Washington in the U.S. are new Condor destinations. Condor extends services to North America and the Balkans German leisure carrier Condor will be adding new destinations in North America and the Balkans in the summer of 2012. In North America, the airline will resume a service to Toronto after a six-year interruption. Starting on June 22, there will be flights from Frankfurt to the Canadian metropolis every Monday and Friday. Baltimore/Washington International Airport will also be served on Mondays and Thursdays starting on July 2. This will be the first nonstop service from Central Europe to this airport. Additional weekly flights to Las Vegas on Fridays, Seattle on Saturdays, and Vancouver on Wednesdays will round out the new North American offering. Condor will deploy Boeing 767s on these long-haul flights, configured with 18 seats in Comfort Class, 35 in Premium Economy, and 217 in Economy Class. BA Cargo brings 747-8 freighter to FRA Just days after taking delivery of a brand new Boeing 747-8 freighter, British Airways World Cargo has assigned it to Frankfurt Airport. This aircraft is more environmental friendly and less noisy than the prior ones. As is traditional, the superfreighter’s arrival was celebrated with an airplane-shaped cake and christened by the airport fire brigade. This and additional freighters are being supplied within the scope of a five-year wet lease agreement with Global Supply Systems Limited (GSS), a 49 percent U.K. affiliate of Atlas Air, the owner of the aircraft. The routes served from AviatonWorld_4-2011_lay4.indd 10 Frankfurt are to Hong Kong on Mondays (via Delhi) and Saturdays, to Shanghai on Fridays, to Atlanta on Wednesdays (via Chicago) and Saturdays, and to Chicago on Sundays. The new 747-8 freighters will replace IAG Cargo’s current fleet of 747-400 freighters. They are the first cargo aircraft since 2000 to be branded with British Airways’ livery. The 747-8 is the largest version of the legendary aircraft so far, exceeding its predecessor by 5.6 meters in length. It is capable of carrying seven pallets or 16 percent more payload. Because the two flights to Split in Croatia and Burgas in Bulgaria developed well last summer, Condor will add seven more tourist destinations in the Balkans in May. Croatia will receive a flight to Rijeka on Saturdays and to Dubrovnik on Sundays. Condor will fly to Tivat in Montenegro on Wednesdays and to Bodrum on Mondays. There will be a new Tuesday connection to Constanta in Romania, and Condor will also commence services to Mykonos, Karpathos, and Preveza in Greece. With the exception of Mykonos, all of the flights will be with Airbus A320s with a two-class configuration. Of the 174 available seats, no more than 32 can be used for the Premium Economy Class. Mykonos will be served by a Boeing 757 with capacity for 265 passengers. 13.12.11 16:31 Airline World Historic KLM DC-3 stops in Frankfurt A rare guest at Frankfurt Airport: KLM flew its historic Douglas DC-3 to Frankfurt to celebrate and promote its sixth daily connection to Amsterdam. The ancient plane arrived from Nuremberg, then took off for two brief sightseeing flights over Frankfurt before departing for Amsterdam. The many plane spotters who showed up snapped loads of pictures of the DC-3. 11 Emirates launches third daily Dubai flight Another daily Emirates flight from Frankfurt: The Dubai-based airline Emirates (EK) has responded to the increasing demand by adding a third daily nonstop service from Frankfurt to Dubai. Emirates uses Airbus A330-200 aircraft configured with 12 first, 42 business, and 183 economy class seats. The new flight, which has the number EK44, leaves Frankfurt at 9:40 a.m. and arrives in Dubai at 7 p.m. This additional flight gives the world’s fastest-growing airline greater flexibility for planning business and leisure travel. Passengers benefit from connections to more than 110 destinations via Emirates’ international hub in Dubai. FRA and JFK will become SIA’s ninth and tenth destinations served by the Superjumbo. Singapore Airlines’ A380s have proven to be exceptionally popular with customers, achieving load factors of more than 80 percent on all of the routes they serve. Singapore Airlines will launch A380 services from Frankfurt to New York on January 16 and to Singapore on January 17, 2012, when it will have a large enough fleet of Airbus A380 aircraft at its disposal. At least three A380 are required to operate the daily Singapore-Frankfurt-New York rotation. The fast-growing German market is Singapore Airlines’ largest on the European continent. Seat capacity increases by 25 percent The A380 flights to New York’s JFK Airport and Singapore will replace an existing daily Boeing 747-400 service. The upgrade increases the seating capacity by 25 percent. The A380s that will be used on the routes out of Frankfurt have a three-class configuration with 12 first class suites, 60 business class seats and 399 economy class seats for a total of 471 passengers. The SIA suites are only available on the A380s. Each suite provides a high level of privacy in an exclusive cabin in the sky, with a sliding door and adjustable roller blinds. Each suite is furnished with a luxurious and fully adjustable seat, upholstered in leather by the world-renowned Italian company Poltrona Frau, and a full-size bed. For entertainment, customers can enjoy crystal-clear images on a sleek 23-inch high-resolution wall-mounted LCD screen. The Singapore Airlines A380 business class is also in a league of AviatonWorld_4-2011_lay4.indd 12 its own. Each seat is 34 inches wide – the widest in its class – and has direct access to the aisle. It can also be converted into a wide, comfortable bed simply by lowering the seatback. SIA’s new economy class seats offer customers unprecedented comfort and space. In addition to maximizing knee and leg room, the ergonomically designed seats boast intelligent features such as a nonintrusive reading light and height-adjustable leather headrests with side panels. Customers in all three classes can enjoy a wide range of the latest movies, TV programs, and music on KrisWorld, Singapore Airlines’ award-winning inflight entertainment system. SIA, which was Airbus’ first customer for the Superjumbo, now has 14 A380s in service and has ordered another five. They are being used daily on the routes from Singapore to New York via Frankfurt and to Paris, Zurich, Hong Kong, Melbourne, and Los Angeles via Tokyo, and twice a day to London and Sydney. ANA is deploying the new aircraft on a new route: to Haneda, Tokyo’s city airport, to supplement its existing daily flight to Narita Airport. All Nippon Airways will start its first regular Boeing 787 Dreamliner service on January 21. The aircraft will initially fly between Germany and Japan three times a week – on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays – before the frequency is increased to daily on February 1. The flights will leave Tokyo Haneda at 1 a.m. and arrive in Frankfurt at 5:25 a.m. The departure time in Frankfurt will be 11:15 a.m. with arrival in Tokyo at 6:45 a.m. the following day. The aircraft is being configured with 46 seats in business and 112 in economy class. All 158 passengers will enjoy ANA’s onboard “Inspiration of Japan” service. The business class features full-flat seats, direct aisle access from every seat, and an à la carte menu with more than 30 items that customers can choose. For entertainment, each passenger has a personal 17-inch LCD flat screen. The economy class is equipped with “fixed-back shell” seats that let passengers recline without disturbing those behind or in front of them. The 34-inch seat pitch provides enough personal space. Another innovation is the passenger-friendly cabin air pressure, which is equivalent to that at an altitude of 1,800 meters. The plane’s materials also keep humidity inside to reduce dryness in passengers’ noses and throats. Strong ties between Germany and Japan “The Dreamliner is ideal for long-haul flights,” explained a spokesman of the carrier. “And Frankfurt is an excellent choice for ANA, because it provides good connectivity to the rest of Europe. The airport in Haneda also has many advantages. Traditionally, Haneda was a hub for domestic flights within Japan. Now, however, it has been opened up for international connections and as a result it is much more attractive than Narita. It is only 30 minutes from the city center.” There have always been strong ties between Germany and Japan, and ANA’s partnership with Lufthansa and the Star Alliance has strengthened them further. Germany is a key market for All Nippon Airways, with mostly business travelers taking its flights. The daily connection from Frankfurt to Tokyo Narita with a Boeing 777 will therefore also continue to operate. ANA is the launch customer for Boeing’s Dreamliner. “This revolutionary new aircraft will transform air travel for passengers and help ANA achieve its strategic goal of becoming Asia’s number one airline,” said CEO and president of ANA, Shinichiro Ito. Looking ahead, All Nippon Airways plans to offer more connections with the Dreamliner and has ordered 55 aircraft for this purpose. 13.12.11 16:32 14 Kategorie Airline World The world’s leading airline expands in Frankfurt Second United service to Newark / single operating certificate received United, the world’s leading airline, is strengthening its presence at Frankfurt Airport by adding yet another daily service to the United States. The merger of United and Continental is almost complete – the new, combined airline has received a single operating certificate. After a year and a half, the biggest merger in airline history has passed another significant milestone toward United Airlines and Continental Airlines becoming a single carrier. Just a few days ago, United Airlines at Frankfurt Destinations Chicago (ORD) Houston (IAH) Newark (EWR) San Francisco (SFO) Washington (IAD) Frequency 14/7 7/7 14/7 7/7 21/7 Aircraft B777 B767 B757*, B777 B747 B767, B777 * As of January 3, 2012 Configuration: B747-400 F 12 seats, C 52, Y 310; B757-200 F 16, Y 159, B767-300ER F 6, C 26, Y 151, B777-200 F 12, C 49, Y 197 oder C 50, Y 226 AviatonWorld_4-2011_lay4.indd 14 they received approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for a single operating certificate, marking another significant achievement in the process of integrating the two airlines. And since November 30, air traffic control communications have referred to all United and Continental flights as “United.” United and Continental went through a rigorous 18-month process of aligning their operating policies and procedures to qualify for a single operating certificate. A team of more than 500 employees drawn from both carriers worked together to carefully evaluate the preintegration programs, processes, and operating specifications of both airlines and choose the best of them for the new United. The United-Continental merger also affects the airline’s organization in Germany. Thorsten Lettnin, 43, has been appointed its regional director for Central Europe. The airline expert now heads the combined sales organization in Frankfurt and is responsible for marketing and cooperation with Star Alliance partner Lufthansa. 13.12.11 16:32 Airline World 15 Nine daily departures from Frankfurt As a Star Alliance founder and Lufthansa partner, United Airlines is a long-time guest in Germany, and especially in Frankfurt. The “old” United began serving Germany in 1990, followed by Continental in 1991. From January on the two carriers will be operating up to 15 daily flights from Germany between them, with nine of these departing to the U.S. from Frankfurt. The newest addition to United’s flight schedule is a second daily service to Newark. Starting on January 3, the early bird will depart Frankfurt at 8:45 a.m. and arrive in Newark at noon the same day. United will deploy Boeing 757-200s for the new service. This aircraft type seats 16 passengers in business class and 159 in economy class. “This is an ideal addition to our B777 flight leaving at 11:05 a.m.,” says Lettnin. “The early arrival time in New York lets our customers attend business meetings on the same day. From our New York / Newark hub, customers can connect to more than 300 destinations across the Americas, including more than 100 served nonstop.” United Airlines is investing heavily in upgrading its cabin product. 62 more long- United serving five major U.S. hubs More new aircraft are in the pipeline. United will be the first U.S. carrier to receive and deploy Boeing 787s. United has ordered 50 Dreamliner jets, which the aircraft manufacturer will begin delivering in the spring of 2012. The first Boeing 787 will be equipped with 36 seats in Business First class, 63 in Economy Plus, and 120 in regular Economy. The A380 is not an option for United, says Duncan. “It doesn’t fit with our strategy, which is to prioritize high frequencies on trunk routes.” Newark is one of United’s biggest hubs in the U.S. It was originally a hub for Continental Airlines and has been used as a gateway to the United States from Europe. In addition to the two Frankfurt services, United connects Newark nonstop with Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, and Stuttgart. “We serve five of our hubs in the United States from Frankfurt,” says Lettnin. United’s Chicago hub receives two flights a day, its Washington D.C. hub, three. United also flies to San Francisco and Houston every day. “The successful Houston service, originally launched by Continental, is used by more passengers than the one to Paris,” says Lettnin. Competing with the Gulf carriers instead of complaining As the world’s leading airline, United is aware of the growing competition from Persian Gulf-based carriers. But it doesn’t see their ambitions as a threat. “We don’t complain, we compete,” said Charles Duncan, United’s Vice President Sales - Transatlantic, Middle East & India, during a recent visit to Frankfurt Airport. “These countries understand the importance of the aviation industry for the economy. The countries of the West can learn from them,” he said. Duncan criticized the emissions trading scheme that the European Union plans to implement next year. “We don’t need taxation to motivate us to burn less fuel,” said Duncan. “The EU emissions trading scheme will take money away from the airlines that they could otherwise invest in new, environmentally friendly aircraft,” Duncan stated. “We are very frustrated by this.” One carrier with 5,717 flights per day The merger of United and Continental has resulted in the world’s largest airline. And the figures are quite impressive: the new United counts 5,717 flights a day to 376 destinations on six continents. In the U.S. alone, United serves 228 cities. Its AviatonWorld_4-2011_lay4.indd 15 haul aircraft will be equipped with flat-bed seating in the business class. approximately 86,000 employees handle almost 150 million passengers a year. The combined fleet comprises 1,262 aircraft, ranging from Embraer 120s to Boeing 747-400s. Besides buying new aircraft, United is investing heavily to upgrade its existing fleet. The carrier is spending more than half a billion dollars on its onboard product; among other things, United is installing flat-bed seating in 62 more long-haul aircraft, raising the total number of airliners thus equipped to 185. More than 300 aircraft will be fitted with Economy Plus seating and more than 200 with advanced broadband Wi-Fi. Lettnin responsible for Central Europe Thorsten Lettnin has been appointed to serve as United’s Regional Director for Central Europe since February. In this position, he is in charge of United’s sales activities in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and Greece. He is also responsible for marketing, customer relations, and the cooperation with partner Lufthansa. Prior to the merger, the 43-year-old airline expert headed sales in the region for subsidiary United Airlines. Lettnin began his career in 1990 as United’s key account manager. In between, he worked at Qantas Airways. 13.12.11 16:32 16 Future World The Squaire Parking structure to add 2,500 spaces Europe’s longest building is about to get its own parking facility as well. The Squaire Parking structure is scheduled to open at the start of next year. The ninestory structure has room for up to 2,500 cars. The spaces are available for use by the public as well as by employees of companies leasing office space in The Squaire. The basic parking fee will be three euros per hour, maximum per day 20 euros. Weekly prices and rates for longer periods of time will also be available. The Squaire Parking structure features outstanding user-friendliness. A digital signage system saves customers time by letting them proceed straight to a vacant slot. All spaces are wide and well-lit for easy parking. The new parking structure is located next to The Squaire and linked to it by a 300-meter-long rail shuttle that goes back and forth 30 times an hour, or every two minutes on average. The ride takes only 90 seconds. It is also possible to walk the short distance between the two buildings. By the time The Squaire Parking opens, IVG Immobilien will have invested about 60 million euros in it. The building sets new standards of environmental friendliness: all levels are illuminated by power-saving LED lamps, and the roof is planted. Recharging stations for electric cars are planned. The structure is expected to be awarded the “Gold” environmental certificate for compliance with the internationally acknowledged LEED standard. A 300-meter-long rail shuttle links the new parking structure with The Squaire. The Squaire’s nine-story parking structure will be open soon, with capacity for up to 2,500 cars. Fraport expands winter service At a total cost of five million euros, Frankfurt Airport has expanded its winter service capability by adding two Frankfurt Airport has purchased two additional snowclearing convoys and hired 180 additional employees. AviatonWorld_4-2011_lay4.indd 16 additional snow-clearing convoys to its fleet of vehicles. The personnel has also been significantly bolstered by 180 to a total of 450 employees. This will permit clearing of snow in three shifts around the clock at Frankfurt Airport, which is one of the world’s 10 busiest airports. As a result, Frankfurt Airport now boasts a fleet of six (two large and four smaller) snow-removal convoys comprising a total of 243 vehicles and other equipment. A new strategy has also been defined to enable concurrent clearing of ice and snow from two runways and a sufficient number of taxiways in 30 minutes or less. Fraport ranks high on sustainability indexes Fraport’s commitment to protecting the environment has earned the approval of various international sustainability indexes. For the fifth time, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World has now placed the Fraport Group among the top 10 companies in terms of sustainability, out of the largest 2,500 companies listed in the Dow Jones Global Indexes (DJGI). The Financial Times Stock Exchange has also listed Fraport again, and the SAM Group and PricewaterhouseCoopers have once again included Fraport in the 2011 Sustainability Yearbook. Fraport was listed in the Yearbook for the first time in 2008. In this year’s ranking, Fraport has been awarded silver. All of these indexes evaluate companies’ economic, environmental, and social performance. 13.12.11 16:32 Future World 17 Hilton and Hilton Garden Inn to open in The Squaire Greater choice of hotel rooms at Frankfurt Airport Starting on December 20, passengers and airline crews will find two more places to stay at Frankfurt Airport: directly adjacent to Terminal 1, hotels of the popular Hilton and Hilton Garden Inn brands will open at the same time. The Hilton Frankfurt Airport and Hilton Garden Inn Frankfurt Airport are located right next to one other – a first for Hilton Worldwide in Europe. The hotels are managed by Charles Muller, a native of the Netherlands who has been with Hilton for 18 years. Guests can use the business center 24 hours a day. The conference facilities at the Hilton Frankfurt Airport are complemented by those of the neighboring Hilton Garden Inn Frankfurt Airport, which has three more conference rooms and a business center. Event planners will find two state-of-the-art business hotels that stand for class and individuality. This project is a key step in the Hilton Worldwide strategy of also meeting the needs of different target groups in the German market with hotel brands distinguished by different profiles. The highlights of the Hilton Frankfurt Airport include a stateof-the-art ballroom where events can be hosted for up to 570 people. Countless Swarowski crystals set into the over six-metrehigh ceiling lend the ballroom a spectacular ambience. The adjoining foyer, featuring a view of the Frankfurt Municipal Park, may be used for exhibitions and receptions. Both hotels are part of The Squaire, which has attracted worldwide attention. This spectacular development “floats” directly above Frankfurt Airport’s long-distance train station and has direct access to Terminal 1 via an enclosed walkway over the motorway. There is also direct access to the A3 and A5 motorways at Europe’s largest motorway interchange, the “Frankfurter Kreuz”. Boasting a horizontal high-rise architecture, the futuristic building is 660 meters long and up to 65 meters wide. Situated right next door, the Hilton Garden Inn Frankfurt Airport has a total of 334 rooms, a bar, a restaurant with show kitchen, and a 24-hour pavilion pantry convenience mart with healthy snacks, drinks, and souvenirs from the Frankfurt area. Guests can also enjoy amenities typical of the Hilton brand, such as complementary Internet access, “Garden Sleep System” beds specially developed for Hilton Garden Inn, and large desks with ergonomic chairs. Adding modern conference facililies The Hilton Frankfurt Airport has 249 elegant rooms and suites and two executive floors with an exclusive lounge, the international restaurant “Rise”, and the “The Fifth Lounge & Bar” in the light-flooded, airy hotel atrium. An extensive fitness and wellness area with 24-hour fitness center, sauna, and Turkish bath rounds out the hotel’s range of amenities. The hotel offers ten conference and banquet rooms amounting to more than 1,450 square meters, all of which meet Hilton’s demanding meetings standards. Daylight and ergonomic leather chairs are as much part of this as are all important telecommunications systems and top-of-the-range conference technology.
