Katie and I like to play tug-o-war with an old,
soft bear. I am a big 2-year-old Saint Bernard
mix and weigh about 70 lbs., so I enjoy the
company of someone who knows how to play
with a big dog. I was really shy when I first
came here, but everyone has been so nice to
me that I come and go into my cabin whenever
they ask me to. My cabin is always clean, even

Dear Cousin Todd, thanks for sending me to
Camp Sweet-Dog. They have named me
Gretchen, the sweetest dog at the kennels. I
guess it’s because I am a black Lab mix with

old now and have outgrown the puppy stage.
I have practiced sitting and am so gentle that
I am sure to be a champion in any home.
When the camp counselors pet me I just melt
at their knees. The other day I won the Fast
Dog Relay because I just love to run and run
when I am especially happy. Its getting lonesome for me and I am ready to be with a family now. I want to go home with a real family
who will let me be inside with them and play

me to Camp Get-A-Home! My name is BoBo
and it’s really fun here. I am a Sheltie and the
cutest guy in the whole camp. At least that is
what I tell myself when I look in the mirror
and see my red hair, black button nose, and
big brown eyes. Today I wore a shirt with my
face on it and everyone stopped to admire
me. I enjoy staying in my camp crate and feel
really safe there. In the afternoon they come
and take us for long walks on leashes. I love
that! They put me in the backyard for some
playtime the other day and I did not dig out. I
don’t dig, it ruins the nails! Thank goodness
there are no jumpy small children around me
and that my counselor lets me follow her
around like a shadow. I love petting time! Mr.

Dear Nike, this is Flora, thanks for the really
swell camp shoes you sent me. They make me
jump really high and I just love it! Now if only
someone would want to train me for agility trials
that would be great. Camp Really-Sweet is just
my style. I am such a petite black Lab mix with
a white chest that they were able to put my
whole face on a camp T-Shirt. I really enjoy
looking up at anyone just to say hello. I won the
survivor contest when I told them about how
someone shot me twice when I was little and I
lived to tell about it. I have a lot of energy and

Hello Mother, hello Father, here I am a Camp
Gotcha-Darlin, but no one has gotten me yet!
I am the cutest petite Pit Bull female and have
so much love to give. There is not a single dog
at this camp that I don’t get along with. I love
my human counselors too and when I get out
of my bunk I like to follow them around. They
are teaching me to sit and not to jump. I want
to obey them so much my little brindle body
just wiggles with delight at the slightest sign of
attention. My very pink nose is sure to be the
cutest nose here at camp. Because I am so
young, only about 6 months old, I would love
to get to my family right away so we can grow
up together. I would like to be in a family with
older children, and like other dogs a lot. Off to

except that I am the only Australian Kelpie

plucking feathers off chickens before
singeing the tiny pinfeathers over an
open flame.
If you’ve never tried it, take my
word it. It is one smelly job.
I thought I was on a fast-track
training program up front waiting on
customers, operating the cash register
and delivering groceries on my basket-equipped bicycle.
The two job cultures were bound to
clash. It was only a matter time.
After what seemed an eternity, the
owner stepped forward and emptied
the entire bottle of red soda pop on
the both of us, which had an immediate calming affect.
He must have learned that from
throwing ice water on fighting mutts.
The mud-wrestling event was over
as soon as it was begun. In that
moment we became equals.
Hazy memory
For the life of me I can’t recall how
the fight broke out. All I can remem-
ber was seeing the buckets of hot
water spilling as the two of us went
rolling onto the mud floor.
Fists were flying, and so were the
feathers.
My best wrestling hold was my
patented headlock, but, with the slippery mud coating covering both of us,
Leroy kept slipping out.
Meanwhile up front the owner,
smoking a large stogie and
drinking a bottle of red soda
water, was kibitzing with
one of his cronies.
As soon as they heard
the commotion coming
from the rear
of the store,
they came
to investigate.
Out of the
corner of my
eye I caught a
glimpse of both
men standing in the
doorway, the owner
with a bottle of red
soda pop in one hand
and stogie in the other.
None too soon, I
thought. The cavalry had
arrived. Surely these two honkies
would intervene on the side of the
young white boy. But to my amazement they did not.
They just stood there with dropped
jaws observing the spectacle as
theater.
A large craft-paper bag was placed
in between us into which we would
fling the recently plucked feathers.
Sticky feathers
Oftentimes we would miss, and
wet feathers would stick to the
shelves, store goods or even
to us chicken pluckers.
Here’s how the
procedure worked.
The owner would
go to the chicken
pen out back and
chase down a
couple of the slower-running chickens
and kill them.
The headless chicken cadavers would
then be brought into
the back room and
dipped neck first into
buckets of scalding
water.
Leroy and I sat on
stools on the dirt floor
plucking feathers and occasionally dipping the chickens
back into buckets of hot water
that were sitting on the dirt
floor.
It was there I first learned that manual labor was not the name of a
Mexican president.

OLLY LAKE RANCH—At
15 years of age, my career as a
soda jerk was short-lived. (See
my column on page 14 of last week’s
TRADERS GUIDE OF TEXAS.)
Ten years of
dreams melted in
a dollop of
whipped cream.
Don’t get me
wrong. I loved
being a soda jerk.
It was just that
the 40-hour work
week conflicted
with my social M.L. Myers
life, not to mention junior-high-school studies and
homework.
Actually, soda-jerking was not my
first rodeo, if you get my drift, in the
food-service business.
A year earlier I had gotten my baptism of fire with a small corner grocery store at the intersection of Welch
and Waugh Drive in Houston.
When I signed on in the summer of
1944, the owner had only one other
employee, a black kid named Leroy.
Leroy was about my age but a
school dropout. Leroy did the grunge
work in the back of the store like

Leroy may have had seniority, but
I had the more prestigious position.
The owner took an immediate liking to me, which didn’t help staff personnel relations either, as I was to
soon discover.
I was like the favorite son the owner
never had. He even showed me where
he stowed his loaded .38 revolver
under the cash register and how to use
it if push ever came to shove.
Nice neighborhood, I thought.
Everything seemed to be going
swimmingly until the day the owner
asked me to help Leroy in the chicken-plucking department.
Leroy was up to his you know
what in chicken feathers.
The room in the back of the store
was a small area with a dirt floor.
Shelves covered the walls with
canned goods, brooms, paper products and other grocery stock.
Each of us had a small stool and a
one-gallon bucket of scalding hot water.

Dumber and more dumber
Sitting in the midst of the chaos, I
figured we would be fired on the spot.
It must have been a funny sight: us
sitting in the mud covered with feathers.
After the two men finished laughing, the owner told us to clean up the
mess and finish with our chickenplucking chores.
We meekly obeyed and got back
down to business, each one blaming
the other for being the dumber one
who started the melee in the first place.
It was an episode I never forgot,
but I don’t remember much of what
happened after that for the rest of the
summer.
When school started in the fall, I
quit and was happy just to be another
schoolboy instead of a workaday
laborer in the food-service business.
There must be an easier way to
make a living, I remember thinking,
and school became a more attractive
option than ever before.

8 ozs. each and 3⁄4 inch thick
Extra virgin olive oil
In a medium bowl, mix the marinade ingredients. Place the steaks in a
large, resealable plastic bag and pour
in the marinade. Press out the air, seal
the bag, and turn several times to coat
the meat. Place the bag in a bowl and
refrigerate for 4 to 6 hours, turning
the bag occasionally.
Let the steaks stand at room temperature 20-30 minutes before grilling. Remove the steaks from the bag
and reserve the marinade.

saucepan, bring to a boil and boil for
about 10 seconds. Set aside about half
of the marinade for basting the steaks.
For the remaining marinade in the
saucepan, reduce the heat to a simmer
and cook until it has reduced to the
consistency of a dipping sauce, 5-10
minutes, stirring occasionally. Set
aside.
Pat the steaks dry with paper towels. Lightly coat the steaks with oil.
With the lid closed, grill the steaks
over direct high heat (500-550
degrees) until cooked to desired
doneness, 5-7 minutes for mediumrare, turning once and basting with a
little of the boiled marinade.
(If flare-ups occur, move the steaks
temporarily over indirect high heat.)
Remove from the grill and let rest
2-3 minutes. Serve warm with the
dipping sauce on the side.
