From Cairo to Cape
Town, Namibian Alaric
Britz cycles for charity
Since January 2012, Namibia became an official
participant for the first time in history in the Tour
d’Afrique race across Africa.
Alaric Britz hails from the small town of Rehoboth.
Currently cycling in 1st place (standing results May
7th 2012), he became the first Namibian to attempt
this endurance taxing activity. Britz embarked on
this journey to raise money for children in Namibia
and one of the beneficiaries is the Community Hope
School.
In March 2012, Planning and International Relations
(PIR) hosted the first ever Zumbathon in Namibia to
raise funds for the Community Hope School and to
support Alaric Britz in his mission.
PIR is proud to be one of the supporters for Britz on
his mission across the Continent and on his mission
to raise funds for the Community Hope School and
Namibia’s orphaned and vulnerable children to
receive an education.
“The Tour d’Afrique is the ultimate test of endurance
and tenacity amidst some of the most beautiful
environments and cultures in the world. Each day
yields new and unexpected challenges, discoveries
and friendships. Riding a bicycle is perfect for exploring
and encountering Africa on the outside and one’s own
personal limits on the inside,” said Erin Sprague, 2010
Tour d’Afrique Full Tour Rider.
According to Sprague, each year since 2003, a group
of strong-willed men and women have undertaken
a journey of body and soul on roads less travelled,
pedaling their way across Africa on the ultimate long
distance cycling adventure.
“Some 400 cyclists from more than 20 countries have
completed this intrepid journey, including cycle cross and
mountain bike riders of all skill levels, retired couples,
university students and professors, doctors and nurses,
IT professionals, diabetics, a blind person, and a double
amputee,” Sprague revealed.
The Tour’s mandate is to cross Africa by human power and
to experience its beauty and diversity from the bicycle
seat; to create a unique athletic endurance event for both
amateurs and professionals; to give something back to
Africa by raising funds for bicycle donations to community
health & development groups and to raise consciousness
about bicycles as an alternative and appropriate means
of transport.
Travelling through 10 countries in all, the teams cycle
along the Nile past ancient temples, through the
Sudanese desert, and up and down the biblical landscapes
of Ethiopia’s rugged Simian Mountains. After crossing
the Equator in Kenya, they pedal past legendary Mount
Kilimanjaro, to Lake Malawi, Victoria Falls, and along the
edges of the magnificent Kalahari and Namib deserts, en
route to the finish of the epic journey, in beautiful Cape
Town, South Africa.
Jean-Pierre Lanz’s second
visit to the Poly
Mr Lanz is on a three week visit courtesy of B360. He will be attending to
various issues pertaining to the Department and Hotel School. He will be
working with faculty in pre- and post service briefing of students and the
setting up of guidelines, benchmarking and assessment of practical sessions.
Another area of focus will be capacity building among staff in terms of
observing and coaching techniques. Regarding hotel operations Mr Lanz will
assist in crafting a marketing plan for the hotel and restaurant.
This exercise has become imperative given the recent expansion of the hotel
and its imminent re-launch. His engagement will add value to the operations
of both the department and hotel school through exposure of staff to best
practices.

her Finland
experience
I had a phenomenal time in
Finland (Turku). Except for the
freezing weather, I must say that
the experience was really, really
rewarding. I have learnt a lot in
terms of Broadcast media.
My stay was made possible by JOCID
(Journalism for Civic Involvement,
Democracy and Development
programme) which covered all
my expenses whilst in Finland. I
have done my partial internship
programme at the Turku University
of Applied Sciences which is ranked
as one of the top universities in
Turku.

The Department of Business Administration in the School of Business and
Management is the proud beneficiary of knowledge transfer business Guru
Oswald H. Richards, Ph.D., MBA, MSc.
Dr. Richards is the Chairman, Director and Professor of the Center of
Excellence in Business & Entrepreneurial Studies on the main campus of
Lincoln University in Lincoln, Pennsylvania, USA. He is also Director of the
Master of Science in Administration program (Finance and Human Resources
Management) at the Graduate Center campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Prior to his transition to academia, Dr. Richards was employed as a senior
banking and financial services executive at PNC Bank, PA.; Riggs National
Bank, Washington, DC; Bank of America, MD.; and Legg Mason Wood Walker,
MD. He also served as a management consultant to several United States
government agencies as an employee of NationsBank/Keystone Consulting
in Washington, DC.
He arrived at the PON in early April 2012 as a Fulbright Scholar and will
lecture at the PON for a period of one month only.
Commenting on hosting Prof. Richards in his School, the Dean of Business
and Management, Mr. Kofi Boamah, said: “The specialist will work with
different departments in the School of Business Management in developing
case studies and also teach faculty how to write case studies and use them
in teaching.”
Ms. Magreth Mate, final year student studying
towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism
and Communication Technology.
Education: The Finnish education is
ranked one of the best in the world;
the good thing I have highlighted is
the fact that they do more practical
lessons than theory. Student
journalists are constantly in the
field conducting radio interviews
and working hand in hand with the
media houses. I have specifically
adapted well to this system and I
have strengthened my interview
and public speaking skills. I have
also done radio and television
interviews which I will present to
Ms Bertha Amakali, my lecturer at
PON, once I receive the link from
one of my lecturers at Turku.
I am grateful to the PON who
accorded me the opportunity to
experience the world of academe
beyond Namibia.
He will also guide Masters and PhD students on how to write proposals, Mr.
Boamah added.
He will be a guest lecturer to the Master of International Business (MIB)
and Master of Leadership and Change Management (MLCM) students on
the “operation of the stock market” with emphasis on the New York Stock
Exchange (NYSE Euronext) with application to the Namibia Stock Exchange
(NSE).
The Fulbright professor is no stranger to the PON as he was caretaker faculty
of the six Lincoln University students who were hosted by PON during their
Summer School Programme in June 2010. During that time, PON students
pursuing an Honours Degree in Entrepreneurship attended his seminars and
their results were quite impressive, according to Dean Boamah.
“Currently the School of Business Management at PON faces a challenging
period in its history as characterized by the competition for top quality
faculty coupled with an ever rising demand for our programmes both from
the business fraternity and the Namibian community at large,” Boamah
revealed.
He said his School needs professors with a combination of academic as well
as clinical and professional skills who can deliver to the classroom real-world
experience for global applicability and competitiveness.
Said Boamah: “The PON is convinced that Dr. Richards is uniquely qualified
to transfer these competencies, having worked in the financial services and
governmental sectors and as a senior executive and consultant with the
broad based leadership and managerial responsibilities.”
Career Fair 2012
About 3 000 high school learners
from 10 schools in the Khomas Region
attended the 17th Polytechnic Career
Fair on campus last week. Learners
had the opportunity to explore
employment opportunities and to
benefit from career guidance. Close
to 40 companies participated at this
year’s career fair which was hosted
under the theme: “Internationalization
of Higher Education.”
The career fair provides opportunities
for current and prospective students to
explore career opportunities, conduct
research on companies and gather
information from potential employers
about their expectations. The career
fair also provides a recruitment
platform for students.
Prof Tjama Tjivikua, Rector of
the Poly, said the Career Fair was
necessary as it enabled students
to explore the market and attain
a better understanding of job
opportunities in industry.
The Rector advised the students to take
advantage of what is on offer and aim
to excel in whatever they do. “Learn
to move from ambition to achievement
and always remember that destiny
doesn’t cause disasters; mistakes do,”
he advised.
Robin
Sherbourne,
well-known
Economist and Keynote Speaker at
the event, advised students not to
make the mistake of believing it is only
their paper skills that employers are
looking for. He said: “Copying from
the internet or parroting what other
people tell you are not skills that many
employers seek.
provided that government follows
the right economic policies.
“I am convinced that there is a
need for more career information
and guidance in Namibia based
on real and timely information
from the labour market,” said
Sherbourne.
“Real understanding is what real
education is about, as good employers
are looking for people with energy
and commitment who can think for
themselves, take initiatives, take
pride in their work, provide service
and who constantly want to improve
themselves.”
Sherbourne is of the belief that the
Namibian economy is fairly diversified
and that he expects to see growth
in many sectors such as agriculture,
fishing, mining and oil and gas,
PIR: Your Platform to Reach Excellence
PIR donates to
Mother W. Afrikaner
Private Hostel
Towards the end of April 2012, the PIR department donated food to
the Mother W. Afrikaner Private Hostel situated in Dolam, Katutura,
as part of its social responsibility towards vulnerable children in
Windhoek. Mother W. Afrikaner is an orphanage home housing
about 40 children.
PIR team members met with Ms Nicolene Kharuchas, one of the
caretakers, who was surprised and happy to see the team and
receive the food.
Commenting on her work, she said: “Through nurturing, we share
our knowledge, our talents and every single child is worth it to
experience individual attention.”
An excited 10-year old Terence Gawanab, who showed the team
around, could not contain his joy and in a whispering tone told
the team that he will study at the Polytechnic of Namibia upon
completion of his high school.
