A right royal knees-up
Singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor and her husband, The Feeling bassist, Richard Jones, get into character at the Wilton Way street party
RESIDENTS turned out in
droves on 29 April to mark
the Royal Wedding – and
take advantage of an
excellent excuse for a party.
Streets and estates were
decked with flags and bunting
while revellers ate, drank,
danced and got to know their
neighbours over the Bank
Holiday. A piano was set up
in Wilton Way, and a range
of regal outfits and headgear
were on display. Meanwhile in
Leonard Street a huge crowd
packed out an event with
bands, party games and a
barbecue. A profusion of white
lace, union flags and freshly
baked cakes was in evidence
across the borough, as Prince
William’s marriage to Kate
Middleton was celebrated well
into the evening.

Digital Shoreditch, from
3 to 7 May, showcased
local talent as nearly
200 studios and firms in
the area ran workshops,

businesspeople alike.
Part sponsored by the
Council, the aim of the
festival was to cement
Shoreditch’s place at the
heart of digital innovation.
Kam Star, CEO of
Shoreditch-based PlayGen
and festival founder, said:
“This week-long festival
is only the start. Digital
Shoreditch is a collective
movement built on the
amazing talent and flair
of our community that
will establish Shoreditch
as the world’s number
one destination for digital
creativity.”
Cllr Guy Nicholson,
Cabinet Member for

launch the festival. He
said: “Hackney has a
long-established creative
sector, and the digital and
tech companies are the
latest manifestation of
this, a significant part of
the engine room of both
the local and national
economy. The Council
seeks to provide the best
possible conditions for
businesses to start up,

News in brief
Changes to East Marsh
EAST Marsh is set to be closed to the public this month as
work for the 2012 Games steps up.
The area is being handed over to the Olympic Delivery
Authority and will become the key access point for spectators
at the northern end of the Olympic Park.
A temporary hard surface will be installed to host a coach
drop off facility, plus parking for cyclists and disabled visitors
during the Games. East Marsh is due to be returned to its
original use, with Football Association (FA) standard, grass
football pitches, and handed back to the borough in time for
the 2013/14 season.
Improvements will include a new bridge over Ruckholt Road
to provide direct access from the Marshes to the Olympic
Park and a landscaped spectator area on East Marsh.
Cabinet Member for Regeneration and the 2012 Olympic and
Paralympic Games, Cllr Guy Nicholson, said: “The Council
has made sure the 2012 Games have been used to bring
together a substantial investment for world class sports
facilities across the Marshes. That investment has led to
new rugby pitches, FA standard football and junior football
pitches, cricket pitches and modern changing rooms with
teaching and club facilities. This investment will ensure the
future of football across all of the Marshes is secured for the
next generation of players.”

Cricket, football
and harmony
FOOTBALL and cricket talent was in
evidence at Hackney Marshes last
month.
On 13 April, a team of Met Police officers
and staff padded up to face young
cricketers in the first official match to be
held on the Marshes in over 15 years. ‘Peace
at the Crease’ marked the opening of new facilities
– including seven new pitches – jointly developed by the
Council, the England and Wales Cricket Board and Middlesex
Cricket Board. The event was part of the London-wide
StreetChance initiative supported by Barclays Spaces for
Sports. For more info, visit: www.streetchance.co.uk
Then the Safer Neighbourhood Tournament (SNT) Cup saw
scores of grassroots footballers get together to battle it out for
trophies, as well as raise awareness of community safety and
building relationships, on 17 April.
Now in its ninth year, the Cup – this year supported by
Hackney Homes – involves teams from estates across East
London. See: http://sntcup.com
A new cricket competition for Hackney Marshes, The Last
Man Standing (LMS) League, will be starting on Thursday
evenings from mid-June. Teams are invited to an open

A golden gift
SINGLE ‘Double
Eagle’ coin from
a hoard of gold
worth £100,000
has been donated to
Hackney Museum, after a
descendent of the rightful
owner was traced.
The jar of 80 mainly 19th
century American coins was
unearthed in 2007 by two
men from a special needs
housing scheme, a support
worker and a volunteer,
as they worked in a Stoke
Newington garden.
Max Sulzbacher, 81,
the son of a Jew who fled
persecution in Nazi
Germany just
before the
Second World
War, was
declared the
legal owner.
This is the
first time
A
since the 1996 Treasure
Act came into force that a
find has been awarded to
an heir, rather than being
split between finder and
landowner.
Max’s father, Martin,
was interned in the UK
during the war as an ‘enemy
alien refugee’ and relatives
buried his fortune, fearing it
would be seized by German
invaders. Shortly afterwards
their house was destroyed
by bombing, the inhabitants
killed and the coins lost.
When building work
began on the site in 1952,
another jar of gold coins
was discovered.
Martin was
awarded £1,000
under the old law
regarding treasure
finds – which
made the local
papers at the time.
After the 2007 find was
reported to the Portable
Antiquities Scheme, a
historian alerted the coroner
to the 1952 story. On
18 April this year, the
coroner declared Max
the rightful owner because,
for a find to be classed as
‘treasure’, its owner or
their heirs or successors
must be unknown.
As well as giving the
Council-run museum a coin,
Max has also agreed to give
a gift to the men who found
the coins. He said he was
‘surprised but delighted’ by
the discovery and expressed
his gratitude to the finders.
It is
thought
the rest of the
coins will be sold.
Cabinet Member for
Community Services, Cllr
Jonathan McShane, said:
“This is an incredible
story spanning over 70
years. Hackney has such a
colourful history and this
personal account gives
an insight into how war
affected families who had
settled in the borough. This
generous donation means
the Council can display it
in Hackney Museum and
keep the story alive for
generations to come.”

HOXTON Square was closed to the public for eight weeks on
3 May so a number of planned improvements can be made.
As part of the Council’s investment in the borough’s parks
and green spaces, the square will benefit from new plants
and an improved lawn; more seating; a restored drinking
fountain; and the re-laying of a path around the edge of
the square.
The work is being carried out following a consultation to find
out what kinds of improvements should be made.
The closest alternative green space is Shoreditch Park,
approximately ten minutes walk up Pitfield Street or Hoxton

HACKNEY Museum is offering residents
a chance to meet a host of nose
invaders, gut-dwellers, lung
destroyers and lifesavers.
The Council-run museum has joined up with
educational charity The Centre of the Cell to create a
new exhibition called ‘Micro Monsters: The Good, The
Bad and The Tiny’.
The interactive display, which runs from 19 May to 17
September, brings the science of microbes alive and is filled
with eye-catching sights, fun activities and fascinating facts
about the lives of microbes.

WORK to improve Stoke Newington Library means it will be
temporarily closed until 17 May.
When it reopens, customers will be able to borrow
books and DVDs and pay fines at new self-service
kiosks. This will mean staff can spend more time
supporting customers, and managing stock, information
and events. The interior will be slightly
changed to reduce the counter size, and
a teenage study area will be developed.
Other planned improvements to the
borough’s libraries include a refit of
Woodberry Down, and the opening

from 19 to 21 May, and
Eddie is inviting local people

to come and tell him
what they think about
the 2012 Games.
Eddie is looking forward
to being back in the market,
he says: “I spent so many
Saturdays there as a child,
waiting for my mum as
she talked and talked
and talked. I also love the
Marshes and I remember
in the days when I was fit
I used to run around and
around the place.”
Eddie’s rise to fame
wasn’t straightforward.
After failing his 11-plus
exam, he went to Upton
House School in Homerton,
which he calls ‘the university
of life’. He adds: “It is my
biggest hang-up that I didn’t
go to university. I have a
fixation with it. Even the
people employed to answer
the phone at BBC London
have degrees.”
Television was his first big

All your recycling
questions answered
Q: I have noticed litterbins for mixed recycling near my
home in Shoreditch and think they’re a great idea. Are
there plans to put any more of these bins out
in Hackney?
A: The bins you have seen are part of Hackney’s ‘recycle
on the go’ scheme that lets people put recyclable materials
into a separate section of a litter bin for sorting, rather than
everything being disposed of in landfill.
These bins can also be found in Stoke Newington and
Hackney Central as well as Hoxton and Shoreditch. This year,
there are plans to place extra bins of this type in busy parts
of Hackney, as well as in parks, so keep an eye out wherever
you go in the borough.

Changing environmental views
A GROUP of young
volunteers have celebrated
their first year of working
to tackle climate change
and help reduce London’s
carbon footprint.
The 140 members
– including 25 from
Hackney – of the London
Climate Change Youth
Ambassadors programme
have given thousands of
hours of their free time to
work on projects that have
ranged from planting trees
and developing community
gardens, to inviting
local people to make
environmental pledges. The
16 to 25-year-olds attended
an event at the London Film
Museum, SE1, on 20 April
I wanted to educate people
that making small personal
changes that are easy and
don’t take up much time
to mark their achievements.
The ambassadors
have revamped Hackney
Community College roof
garden, planting seasonal
herbs and vegetables,
and built a ‘bug hotel’ to
increase biodiversity. They
also made a film to help
raise awareness among
students about climate
change. Cassandra Cheng
said: “I wanted to educate
people that making small
personal changes that are
easy and don’t take up
much time could make a
very big impact. We have
also gained new skills and I
have learned to make short
documentaries and work as
part of a team.”
The programme is
managed by environmental
regeneration charity,
Groundwork London, and
sponsored by technology
and industrial multinational
Johnson Controls, and

Arcola Theatre presents a new production by Helena
Kaut-Howson and Jon Strickland of Chekhov’s masterpiece
Uncle Vanya.
The production, though faithful to the dialogue of the text, is a very
different interpretation – especially in its style and tone, said the
Ashwin Street theatre.
When a retired academic and his young wife return to their country
estate their lives are turned upside down in this tragicomic story of
love, passion and hope.
It added the performance focuses on the world of Chekhov’s play:
‘beauty, ugliness, hilarity and despair’. One critic has already called
it ‘one of the fresher, funnier Vanyas of recent memory’.

Trial of the Mariner
REVIEW
Land of Kings
28-29 April, various locations
FAKE marriages officiated by a ranting,
swearing vicar, as a sergeant major barged
his way through a crowd – just one of the
many bizarre events taking place around
Kingsland Road on Royal Wedding weekend.
More disturbing was a pseudo-betrothed
couple at the same Dalston Old Boys Club
event who broke numerous taboos dressed
as the Queen and her flame-haired grandson.
With its closely guarded schedule released
just before opening night, Land of Kings
showcased artists, musicians and DJs from
Hackney and beyond. Backstreet warehouse
MC Motors was the starting point, with
performers playing a range of Afro-latin
tinged electronic music.
The Rio Cinema screened short films for
the Hackney and East End film festivals.
Efes Snooker Club hosted a Batty Base
artist showcase with old school rave guests
the Ragga Twins wrapping up. Meanwhile
2manydjs drew a massive crowd to the
Magnolia Banqueting Suite, as did Romy XX’s
DJ spot at The Alibi.
All-day street parties left many attendees a
little worse for wear come the 6pm festival
start on 29 April. That said, rumour has it that
Keira Knightly was seen dancing to a Klaxons
DJ set and ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ actress
Anne Hathaway tucked into a vegetarian dish
from pop-up restaurant Rebel Dining Society.
Still doubting the significance of Hackney’s
nightlife?

Funding has been secured
to develop proposals
to create a University
Technical College (UTC)
– a career-focused school
for 14 to 19-year-olds – in
Hackney.
UTCs are sponsored
by a university or further
education college, and offer
clear routes into higher
education and work.
Students follow a full-time
curriculum of technical
study, alongside compulsory
GCSEs in English, maths,
science, IT, a modern
language and humanities
subject. Hackney’s UTC
would specialise in health
and digital media because
of the local employment
opportunities in these fields.
The curriculum would
be influenced by employers

increase students’ chances
of continuing into higher

PEAS walk for schools
THE Bridge and Mossbourne academies are among 50
schools taking part in a sponsored 10km walk to raise
money for secondary schools in Uganda.
The ‘Bridges to Africa’ event will see thousands of students
walk through the capital to raise £50,000 for PEAS, a
charity that builds schools in the East African country.
The 15 May walk begins in Vauxhall, continues across
central London and finishes at Tower Bridge.
PEAS seeks to widen access to secondary education
in Uganda, where only one in four children attend
secondary school.
Now in its sixth year, ‘Bridges to Africa’ aims to widen its
support work to include Zambia with its latest event.

Students at the new school will focus on health and digital media, as
well as compulsory subjects such as science

Year 10 pupils, who leave
their current school to join
the UTC. Currently, the
Government has released
funding for around 24
UTCs across the country.

Film School celebrated its 10th year with a variety show at
Hackney Empire.
The Clapton-based drama school has produced actors
who have gone on to feature in BBC soap EastEnders, as
well as high-profile West End productions.
It showcased its current crop of students in a show
featuring famous scenes from stage and screen, including
‘Dr Who’, ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and
ending with a medley of feverish disco classics.
Principal, Anna Fiorentini, who grew up in the borough,
said: “Apart from the students and their families, the

enthusiasm and passion of my staff.”
Organisers also thanked celebrity

The school was set up in 2001 to

NEWS IN BRIEF
Screenings With Meaning
YOUNG people from Hackney have been attending a series
of free film screenings that aim to stimulate discussion and
provide a chance to meet new people.
Organised by the Council’s Youth Service, the latest
‘Screenings With Meaning’ event tackles the myths and
realities of urban street violence, with a screening of the
controversial film ‘Shank’ followed by a debate about the
issues raised in the film.
Young people, aged 15 to 19, can reserve their seat and
take part in the third of four free screenings on 21 May,
from 4-7pm, at Fellows Court Community Centre, E2. Text

Club members and coaches at the first soccer camp
By Tayla-Destiny Vanriel,

T Matthias Club
decided to hold
an Easter Soccer
Camp where
children aged eight to
15 could learn to play
football.
The manager of the club,
Steve, decided to split the
ages up so that all the
children would enjoy
their time at the
soccer camp.
The camp wasn’t
too expensive at only £10.
It was a great opportunity
because it gave us a chance
to meet new people. The
S
coaches were
very nice people
and we had
girls who play
for Tottenham Academy
come and coach. Jenna
and Phoebe, two of the
coaches, taught us loads of
skills to help us get better
at football.
We all had fun at
the camp and worked
together as a team.
We all went over to
Hackney Downs every day
to play football, and I had
fun.
We began every session
with a warm up game;
trained for about twoand-a-half hours then
had lunch before doing
an hour and 45 minutes
of little matches in a
tournament within our
groups.
On the last day the
children all got a mini
football, a soccer camp
badge, plus a certificate.
Steve said that because
the soccer camp went so
well, he may consider
doing a summer camp
too. But first up is a
Half Term Sports and
Art Camp from 31 May
to 3 June. It will cost £10
per day or £30 for all four
days. St Matthias Club
is starting football teams
for under-nines and

One night on the big screen
By Molly Marie Bond,

Some of the young people receiving ‘Oscars’ and certificates for
their work on the short films about life on their estate
ON 13 April, Myddleton
Grange community centre
had a film night – and it
was so popular there was
standing room only for
latecomers.
The film night showed
movies that young
people had created
about their lives on
Myddleton Grange
estate, with help from
a group called Mouth
That Roars. Parents,
children, residents’
association members, and
representatives of three
housing associations –
Agudas Israel, North
London Muslim Housing
Association and Southern
Housing – all gave up a
couple of hours to show
their appreciation of the
short films.
The young people and
children were able to be
hands-on with the media
equipment and get a feel
on how to use a camera
and microphone, and to
edit, record and produce
the short films. This gave
them a taste of media
studies and gave them the
opportunity to be creative
and give them more
confidence.
This workshop was a
very good thing to do as
all of the children worked
together and got to learn
new things about each
other.

Fun at the Ivy Street Family Centre
THE Ivy Street Family Centre
is planning to celebrate
its 30th year as a support
service for local parents and
children.
During an afternoon party at
its Hoxton hub, guests are
invited to share memories of
their time at the centre over
tea and cakes.
Founded by Ali Harper in
1981, and currently run by
Hoxton Vineyard Trust, the
centre offers a drop-in respite
for parents and carers, while
giving under-fives a place to
learn and play. Lorraine, a
centre volunteer who was one
of the first parents to come to
Ivy Street, said: “I had five kids
and brought them all here. I’d
been to hell and back – my son
has many disabilities – and
only at Ivy Street have we felt
fully welcome. No one judges
you here. I’d have been lost
without them. That’s why I now
volunteer myself.”
Currently, Ivy Street supporters
are working to raise £1.2million
to redevelop the site in order
to provide additional services,
including debt management
advice and a project targeted at
older residents.
The party kicks off at Ivy Street
Centre, Ivy Street, N1, on 15

A better end to life

a local charity.

head-on with four events

Taking place in London

chance to meet hospice

its services. On 17 May,
the hospice teams up with

T
The St Joseph’s Hospice Community Choir
Down to Earth hands out
information on funeral
planning. On 20 May,
visitors can hear from St
Joseph’s choir and take
part in an arts project at a
garden tea party at its Mare
Street headquarters. Just
outside the borough, an
end of life conference on
19 May takes place at the
London Muslim Centre on
Whitechapel Road, E1.
The events form part of
Dying Matters Awareness
Week from 16 to 22 May.
Sarah Burnard, an event
co-ordinator at St Joseph’s,
said the week was an
opportunity for people
to put their natural fears
to one side. She added:
“Many people still feel
uncomfortable talking
about end of life issues.
“Everyone deserves a good
death, and this is more
likely to be achieved if we
discuss it early on.”
There is a discrepancy
between preferences about
where people would like to
die and their actual place
of death, said the charity.
It pointed to research that
showed around 70 per cent
of people prefer to die at
home but more than 60 per
cent die in hospital.

A clean sheet

T is hard today to
realise how much
people were threatened
by disease before
antibiotics, when even
illnesses that now cause
little more than temporary
discomfort could kill.
A glance at the annual
report of the Hackney
Medical Officer for 1900
lists deaths from chicken
pox, influenza, scarlet fever,
measles and diarrhoea, as
well as smallpox, cholera,
typhoid, and diphtheria.
Many people lived in
cramped, dirty conditions,
often without clean water
and overrun with fleas and
lice, so it was inevitable that
once a disease took hold,
it quickly spread through
the community.
As part of the Victorian
effort to combat these
problems, the Cleansing of
Persons Act of 1897 gave
I
local authorities the power
‘to permit any person
who shall apply to the
said authority, on
the ground that he
is infested with
vermin, to have
the use, free of
charge, of the
apparatus (if
any) which the
authority possess
for cleansing the
person and his clothing
from vermin…’
Between 1900 and 1901
the then Metropolitan
Borough of Hackney built
a public disinfecting station
in Millfields Road in order
to comply with the Act.
This consisted of a
chamber where the
furniture, bedding and
belongings from infected
homes could be treated
either by superheated
high-pressure steam
disinfectors or cyanide,
while the houses themselves
were fumigated. The
cyanide chamber was also
sometimes used to treat
contaminated dry food
such grains, nuts, and seeds.
People themselves
needed to be cleaned and
couldn’t live in their homes
during the fumigation, so
a temporary shelter was
also built alongside the
disinfecting station to
house them.
This consisted of
four furnished tworoomed flats, each
totally separated
from the others to
prevent the spread
of infection.
The station
had two separate
bathrooms for men
and women, along with
a laundry, drying room
and ironing room where
contaminated clothing was
dealt with. There was also
a lodge for the caretaker,
a garage for vans, and a
stable for horses used to
transport items to
the station.
‘With this station and
shelter,’ declared the
Medical Officer in 1902,
‘I have no hesitation in
stating that Hackney will
be the most completely
equipped district in London
for dealing with infectious
and contagious disease.’
During the slum
clearances of the 1930s,
the Hackney disinfecting
station, like many others
throughout London, was
heavily used to cleanse
people and their belongings
before they were moved
into newly built Council
accommodation. But
gradually the role of
disinfecting stations was
taken over by hospitals, and
with the development of
antibiotics, improvements
in medical treatment and
living conditions, they were
needed far less frequently.
The Millfields station
closed in the late 1980s,
while the last London
station, in Croydon, closed
in 1999, although some
still survive in other parts
of the country. Today
the Millfields station and
caretaker’s lodge survive
and have been granted
Grade II listed status
by English Heritage.
It is hoped the site can
eventually be put to a new
community use.

THE Council is inviting
residents to have their say
on the future of Hackney’s

of the plans set out in the
draft Library and Archives
Development Strategy
2011-2015.

Philip Nhan, 21, studied for a BTEC in IT Media. He was unemployed for ten months
before joining The Hoxton Apprentice through education, training and employment
charity, Partners in Hope. He enjoyed cooking and wanted to learn more.
Philip says the training that was provided helped him build his culinary skills, and he
has learnt how to create complicated dishes.
Working for Hoxton Apprentice has enabled Philip to build his team work skills. He
has also become more confident and sociable, and is looking forward to continuing to
work in restaurants.
He said: “I really enjoyed my time here at The Hoxton Apprentice. If it wasn’t for the
experience and time I have spent here, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
