To achieve this the IPTC has committed itself to a "Photo Metadata Roadmap" - see below. What is Photo Metadata? • Metadata is "data about data" - in the scope of photographs that is data about the digital image. • Data about digital images ... ... describe what you can see on the photo, either using free text or codes from a controlled vocabulary ... provide administrative information about the photo like who has taken it, when and where it was taken, etc. ... provide rights related information (copyright, usage rights) ... provide workflow related information like an identifier and title for the photo or a job identifier. • These data may be stored with the digital image data in an image file. Well known formats are JPEG or TIFF files. • These data may be stored outside a photo file in a digital asset management system or by a external file, e.g. the XMP sidecar file or XML based news exchange format files as specified by the IPTC. Photo Metadata Roadmap 2007 This roadmap outlines planned photo metadata activities of the IPTC and in particular of its Photo Metadata Working Group starting in summer 2007, it was endorsed by the IPTC directors. Much of the planned activities were triggered by and relate to the publicly available "Photo Metadata White Paper". Roadmap items: 1 Metadata specifications The IPTC will start working on the specification of the metadata properties as outlined in the White Paper - this means extending the current schema by the most urgent requirements from the news and stock photo business. 2 Resolving the “Open Issues” from the White Paper The IPTC will start to work on the "Open Issues" (chapter 6) from the White Paper immediately as the IPTC received affirmative response to this list at and after the Photo Metadata Conference in June 2007. That are the headlines of this Open Issues list: • Well defined mapping between metadata properties of different schemas • Write-Once metadata values • Versioning of metadata values • Cameras should allow easy-to-preset metadata values • Cameras should deliver more than Exif metadata (this point is related to the one above) • Improved support for controlled vocabularies (CV) as the source of metadata values on the user interface level • Consistent implementation and use of photo metadata standards must be improved • Imaging devices are not restricted to cameras anymore • A key feature of metadata for digital assets – photographs included – are http://www.iptc.org/cms/site/index.html?channel=CH0098 Seite 1 von 2 PHOTO METADATA IN A NUTSHELL Specifications For both IPTC Core and IPTC Extension: the latest Photo Metadata Standards document Support and discussion The IPTC moderates two discussion forums on photo metadata: * Generic issues * XMP specific issues Subscribe to Photo Metadata feed A feed in the Atom 1.0 format is providing all changes to Photo Metadata standards 12.04.2010 IPTC Web Seite 2 von 2 globally unique identifiers 3 Talking to camera makers and CIPA The IPTC will start talking to camera makers and CIPA regarding the open issues described in 2. 4 Photo workflow standards The IPTC will consider the request for photo workflow standards/guidelines to tame the threat of deleting metadata at some intermediate stage of the workflow. 5 Collaboration with other parties The IPTC will invite standardisation bodies and other companies and parties to collaborate on the efforts outlined in this Roadmap. http://www.iptc.org/cms/site/index.html?channel=CH0098 12.04.2010 IPTC Web IPTC Core & Extension = the IPTC Photo Metadata standard IPTC Core and IPTC Extension are two metadata schemas developed by the IPTC for professional use with a focus on news and stock photos. The technical implementation of the metadata is employing Adobe's XMP technology. Both standards are published together as IPTC Photo Metadata Standards. Its latest version includes the IPTC Core 1.1 and the IPTC Extension 1.1 specifications. IPTC Core • the "IPTC Core" Schema for XMP is made for a smooth and straightforward transfer of metadata values from the IIM-based IPTC fields to the XMP framework • a specification on how to synchronise legacy IPTC field values with the new "IPTC Core" - back and forth. • "custom panels" for Adobe Photoshop to provide a simple user interface to all "IPTC Core" metadata • supplementary documentation for users and implementers. Supplemental documentation like User Guidelines, Implementation Guidelines and custom panels for CS5, CS4 and CS3 are currently developed and will be released in 2010. For both standards XMP technology Adobe's Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is a technology that allows you to embed metadata into the file itself. With XMP, desktop applications and backend publishing systems gain a common method for capturing, sharing, and leveraging this valuable metadata. Software created by Adobe but also many more software vendors is enabled to process XMP metadata as XMP is built on a set of public specifications. You may download them from Adobe's XMP pages: www.adobe.com/products/xmp/ Note: XMP is Adobe's sole intellectual property and not IPTC's. http://www.iptc.org/cms/site/index.html?channel=CH0099 12.04.2010 IPTC Web Seite 1 von 1 IIM for photos: a good solution for more than a decade PHOTO Initally IPTC built its Information Interchange Model (IIM) for content of all kinds of media-types but its most renown usage came with photo metadata. IN A When Adobe decided to add metadata to its Photoshop product in about 1995 they were looking around for appropriate standards - and adopted IPTC's Information Interchange Model (IIM) as the best solution. Specifications IIM was created in 1991 as a rich set of metadata for all kinds of content: text, photo, graphics, audio and even video streams. This may have made the decision easy to implement a subset of IIM into Photoshop. From that time millions of digital images have been annotated by using this technology: Photoshop provided the user interface, how metadata fields are saved and stored in the image file was under the control of IIM. Soon after that time other imaging software got aware of the value of metadata and added features to read, edit and write metadata fields from and to the image file. The IIM standard is still supported by the IPTC and has its own section on this website. Further the IPTC maintains a list of software which claims to be compatible with the IIM implementation of photo metadata. As the IPTC acknowledges the limitations of IIM it developed with Adobe the IPTC Core schema in 2004 which is equivalent to the IIM fields on a semantic level but is built on latest technology, called XMP. In 2008 the IPTC Core was extended by the IPTC Extension schema. This set of metadata is called "IPTC data", "IPTC fields" or "IPTC header". • In 2005 the IPTC released the "IPTC Core" standard for metadata based on Adobe's technical XMP framework.
