I am so proud of TSFA. I am most proud of the
INTEGRITY of this association
Watching great members of TSFA set up for Florescence
“Art by Invitation” was amazing. Watching our talented
judges spend hours critiquing the designs and skillfully
selecting the winners was incredible.
Isn’t it remarkable the fantastic events happening in our Floral Industry? The public
reaction to Florescence was heart-warming. That is just one of many opportunities we
are involved with.
This reaffirms the immense amount of INTEGRITY of TSFA, which reinforces my
decision to NOT ONLY BE A MEMBER, BUT AN ACTIVE, PARTICIPATING
MEMBER.
My awareness and realization of just how lucky we all are to be a part of such a
wonderful association became so clear…and inspiring. We are very fortunate, not
only to witness, but to have the opportunities to further our level of involvement and
personal growth in the industry.
Create your individual voice by being a participant, volunteer, competitor or simply
an admirer and supporter…I urge all of you to discover new ways toRIVER

in the
GARDEN CLUB
community. And always remember that with INTEGRITY, you have nothing to fear,
because you have nothing to hide.

Roses will be on Parade at the Texas Floral Expo
FTD is the Official Floral Partner of the Tournament of Roses and has
been affiliated with the Rose Parade for more than sixty years. As a Parade
sponsor, FTD oversees the floral decor of the antique automobiles and
carriages which carry the Rose Parade VIP’s down Colorado Boulevard.
TOURNAMENT OF ROSES FUN FACTS
* Six thousand stems of flowers and foliage
* Flowers extend a total length to exceed twenty football fields
* Adds three hundred pounds per vehicle
* Features twenty types of botanicals per car | carriage
* Requires more than one thousand man hours
* This project is led by Texas’ own J. Keith White AIFD CFD
Beginning in 1994, Keith began his adventure with the Tournament of
Roses Parade. In 2007, he was named lead Rose Parade Designer of the VIP
vehicles by FTD. Over the past eight years he has been setting standards
that capture all whom attend the parade on New Year’s Day as well as the
millions who view the beauty on televised broadcast.
Incorporating complex and intricate design techniques upon a spectrum of
museum class automobiles, carriages, fire engines, not to mention a first
for the Budweiser wagon is only part of the responsibility. As the keeper of
the Tournament of Roses “tie point,” which is the secret decorating method
passed down years ago from Pasadena, CA florist Jacob Maarse, Keith
holds close the floral design mechanics required to assure stability and the
required protection for the vehicles and carriages. The florals are exquisitely
placed, similar colors and types with slightly changing shades that create the
dramatic effect and impact as well as a feeling of motion. His attention to
detail and sense of style is witnessed in each and every presentation.
The cars are selected by the Tournament of Roses VIP Entries Committee
with special requests honored from the Tournament President, also keeping
in mind the number of people that will ride in the vehicle. “Once these
decisions are made by the Tournament, my work begins” shares White.
“Each car is detailed in an overall design with special elements to reflect
the personality of the VIP. The color palette is specified and the flowers and
foliage are selected. I can see it all before I arrive.” The inspiration comes
each year from those that are selected to ride in the cars. Sticks of butter
were placed the year Paula Dean was Grand Marshall, chimpanzees the year
of Jane Goodall, and most recently Olympic Rings for Louis Zamperini.
Floral placement and design become a part of the vehicle, it is important not
to lose the integrity of the vehicle.
A majority of the flowers are processed through FTD Flower Exchange and
wet shipped directly to the tent work area. The actual design work begins
The Bloomin’ Texan | June 2015 | 10
upon Keith’s arrival the day after Christmas with Patricia Gomez AIFD CFD
and continues until the last vehicle is driven from the tent on New Year’s
Day. With a team of Tournament of Roses Student Ambassadors always on
hand, Keith and his helpers work tirelessly to complete the process.
Keith is a member of Texas State Florists’ Association, Texas Cup Winner
1993, and AIFD, which he has presented four National Symposium
Programs, and he represented FTD / United States in the Interflora World
Cup design competition in Shanghai, China in 2010. J. Keith White is no
stranger to design excellence.
Fiesta Rose Parade
Floats add to the
Grand Prize!!
It’s a Parade!!…and that it is…to the point that some call it the
largest floral pageant in the world.
Fiesta Parade Floats takes center stage as the leading award winning float
builder in the Tournament of Roses Parade. Having presented floats since
1989, eight out of ten Fiesta Parade Floats received awards in 2015. The
most prestigious prize award to any float is the Sweepstakes Award and Fiesta
Parade Floats has won this award consecutively for the past twenty two
years creating a Rose Parade record. Fiesta is considered the leader in both
floral technology and floral application. Surpassing all others in the field of
computerized and hydraulic animated floats, four GuinnessWorld Records have
been set…and then there are the flowers! Flowers as you have never seen
unless you have attended the Tournament of Roses Parade!

TSFA RECOGNIZES
GOLD LEVEL TEXAS FLORAL EDUCATION UNDERWRITER
EQUIFLOR HOME OF RIO ROSES
Where did the idea come to start
Equiflor Home of the Rio Roses?
After working for more than a decade in different
segments of the industry,Anthony Sarandes founded
Equiflor in January of 1986 with the objective
to make a difference in the way flowers were sold
in a lookalike commodity business at the time.
Soon after the company was started Sarandes
and its management team developed a strategy
of differentiation that included the creation of
strict harvest, post-harvest, grading and packaging
specifications with the main purpose of defining
quality and provide customers with consistency 52
weeks a year. Once all quality specs were defined and
implemented at farm level, they were introduced in
brands such us Rio del Oro, Floratec Carnations, Euro
Spec and Rio Roses. Today, after much fine tuning
and in an effort to define our products identity, all
brands have been consolidated under the umbrella
of Rio.
What feature(s) cause Equiflor Home
of the Rio Roses to stand out above
the competition? What makes Equiflor
Home of the Rio Roses different from
the rest?
We are one of very few companies in our industry
that embraces and promotes branding, marketing
and education support to all our customers. We are
also the only company we know that have defined
and implemented strict harvest, post-harvest grading
and packaging specifications for the quality of our
branded products.
We all talk of the changes in the floral
industry. How will the changes in recent
years shape the floral industry of the
future? What is Equiflor Home of the Rio
Roses doing to maintain the integrity of
your customer? What is Equiflor Home
of the Rio Roses doing to help shape a
successful future?
Change is inevitable and is guaranteed to speed up!
At Equiflor we are constantly working on improving
the variety selection in all our product lines and
services with the objective of increasing our value
proposition to our customers. For the immediate
future we are making significant investments in
technology and production; both with the objective
to become a more efficient and effective company
while creating new services always in support of our
customers and our partner farms.
The Bloomin’ Texan | June 2015 | 12
What do you find today’s floral
consumer is looking for?
Although today we serve a more educated customer
with very defined expectation on the relationship
between service, quality and value; at the end of
the day having a hasslefree experience is what most
customers expect.
In what way do you directly help those
selling flowers today meet the need of
the consumer?
Everything we do is designed to enhance and exceed
the overall consumer experience when purchasing
flowers. Starting with our harvesting specs designed to
meet breeders recommended cut stage on each product
or variety and followed by a stringent Quality
Assurance program at farm level and our Miami
facility designed to ensure that our harvest, postharvest, grading and packaging specifications are met
to ensuring vase life performance and the consumer
experience.
Why did Equiflor Home of the Rio Roses
support TSFA’s new floral education
direction?
At Equiflor we strongly believe on the importance
to continuously educate ourselves, our customer and
the consumer and when we were presented with TSFA
objectives and programs, making the decision to
support it was honestly a no brainer!
Stepping out of the Design Room...
Sometimes a designer just needs to step out of the design room and take a moment to think
about even the simplest of things...the things that are done everyday...new designs that
perhaps involve one of the most sought after flowers...or take a look at the simplest of
tasks and apply a higher level of creativity. Texas’ educational forecast will feature those
subjects with the hope that each of you that work happily everyday in the design room
will step out and add to the discussion of what will prove to be the most interesting of
topics.
From his involvement in Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) where he
achieved his first job in retail women’s fashions Jerome Raska learned very quickly store
layout and display and to step out from behind the counter to create impact and make a
difference.
From there he went to share floral bouquets at a friend of the family’s Farmer’s Market
stand and that led to questions such as “Do you do weddings?”, “What made you put those
colors together?” to “Do you want to buy a flower shop?” A friend of a friend needed to
sell and after seeing the store he purchased Fanfare of Flowers the very next day paving
the way to four locations in northern suburbs of Detroit only a few decades ago.
As time went on Rocky Pollitz extended an invitation that he
become part of the Teleflora Education Specialists Team. With this
came opportunities to sell the four stores one at a time and join
the staff as General Manager of a five million dollar operation
where he learned quickly the difference in large volume retail.
This experience led him to open Blumz by JR Designs with two
locations in Ferndale and downtown Detroit for now fourteen
years. Challenges over these days have made him stronger and
well aware of the need to step out of the design room and
constantly evaluate.
“To be aware of your surroundings is of upmost importance.
Over the past eight years four very large floral businesses have
opened in Ferndale but none that offer the shopping experience
that Blumz does.” shared Jerome. “Working to offer product or a
design style that a client simply cannot get anywhere else is the
key. We offer a luxury line that sets us apart.”
Blumz has also learned the need to adjust to client’s needs.
During the recession and troubling times in Detroit it was
mandatory and today they still do so when needed. Offering
something in everyone’s budget is a must! People appreciate it
when you recognize their needs and adjust accordingly.
“We have also learned that people do business with people they
know so we encourage our employees to be involved in the community and to have fun!”
Jerome through his support of the Chamber of Commerce, his participation in Rotary,
and Special Events is all about community. He leads by example which makes all the
difference in his employee’s enthusiasm to participate.
The team aspect of the flower shop is what it is all about. Educating the sales team to
sell so that the designers may create what the delivery personnel can easily deliver. It is
a team! Texas will experience at least a dozen better ways to do business when Jerome
presents “A Dozen Roses A Dozen Ways” at the Texas Floral Expo. Basic...maybe...yet...
Brilliant!

A perspective from one of TSFA’s own…
As I entered The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the
air was bustling with excitement. Not only did stunning
art decorate the walls, creative and unique fresh floral
designs flowed throughout the museum. TSFA was invited to
participate in this biennial event that is presented by River
Oaks Garden Club, The Garden Club of Houston, and the
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The purpose of a floral show
is threefold: to set standards of artistic and horticultural
excellence; to broaden knowledge of horticulture, floral
design, conservation, photography and other related areas; and
to share the beauty of a show with fellow club members and
with the public.
TSFA members, Maria Elisa Maxit, Rob Smith,
Mary McCarthy, and Darryl Murchison, displayed works of
art in the division Art by Invitation – Fantasy Friends. Each
designer created a floral design to compliment the assigned
major work of art.
TSFA President Susan Weatherford stated “TSFA was
extended an invitation by those chairing Florescence to design in
Art by Invitation and judge several design related competitive
classes. Through participation, TSFA promotes the professional
florist while providing design education and inspiration to
those attending this prestigious event.”
Lynn Lary McLean AAF AIFD PFCI TMF, Texas Floral
Events Coordinator commented during judging, “The level
of design in all competitive classes, that we were privileged
to judge, exceeded my expectations. It is easy to see why
Florescence is considered one of the major flower shows in the
nation.”
Gayle Johnson AAF TMFA, Judge and Texas Floral Expo
Chair commented, “TSFA’s involvement in one of the largest
flower shows in the nation, shows the level of leadership and
prestige that TSFA has developed within the industry. It is an
honor to be involved.”
Florescence is one of the largest competitive national
flower shows sanctioned by the Garden Club of America in the
United States. The purpose of The Garden Club is to stimulate
the knowledge and love of gardening; to share the advantage
of association by means of educational meetings, conferences,
correspondence and publications; and to restore, improve and
protect the quality of the environment through educational
programs and action in the fields of conservation and civic
improvement.
Floral and horticultural arrangements designed by
renowned floral and garden designers were showcased.
Following her time as a judge Pat Shirley Becker AIFD TMFA
walked the show yet a third time seizing the opportunity
to take it all in. “I look forward to this opportunity and am
inspired by the beauty that surrounds me each time I attend.
How fortunate we are to be a part of such an amazing display
of flowers.” Many of the arrangements were interpretations
of masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s
permanent collection.

Texas Floral Showcase
Travels to Temple
Written by Texas Floral Showcase Local Chair
Norman Northen TMFA
The second Texas Floral Showcase took place on March 24th, at
the Hilton Garden Inn’s Grand Ballroom in Temple, Texas. Attendees
were from the Dallas, Metroplex, Central Texas and as far away as the Houston area.
Twelve vendors showed their newest products in the Product Gallery around the
concourse of the ballroom before the dinner was served.
Guests were greeted by Texas Floral Events Chair Lynn Lary McLean
AAF AIFD PFCI TMF, TSFA President Susan Weatherford, and Showcase Chair
Norman Northen TMFA.

After a superb meal, J Schwanke
AAF AIFD CFD PFCI TMF took the stage with the
program “Basics 101...Anything but Basic”. It was
anything but basic! The audience was wowed with
so many quick, easy, and cost effective ideas for any
flower shop to use on a daily basis. All went away
with the new and exciting projects and new products
to teach and show to their staff back home. The
stemmed gardenias were my personal favorite!
J always leaves you wanting more.
This is just what you may see in Sugar Land in
July at the first Texas Floral Expo. J will be doing a
similar floral program with even more ideas. Mark
J Schwanke
your calendars for July 17-20th! This is a must!
The vendors and underwriters were thanked by Lynn McLean and Norman Northern!
The Auction took place following the program with proceeds going to the Texas Floral
Endowment. J signed his book, answered questions and posed for photos with his adoring fans. The
vendors returned to the Product Showcase and answered questions about the products that J had
just highlighted in his program. All of the vendors praised the Showcase format. A grand night of
floristry, friends and fun was had by all in attendance.
Thanks to all who contributed to a great event! We can’t wait until the next Texas Floral
Showcase in Lubbock on September 30th. Others are scheduled in 2016. One will be coming to your
area soon. You won’t want to miss it!
A Texas Thank You to all who Contributed to the Showcase Success in Temple!
With twice the expected attendance the new approach to floral education in Texas will continue
across Texas!

heartfelt thank you to owner Seleese Thompson-Mann for the generous meals provided and the smile
and warm welcome that greeted us all. The Local Committee and TSFA members who provided grass

Floral Design Flourishes in
High Schools across Texas
TSFA Certification Testing Increases to over 1,400
It is spring in Texas and all across the state,
TSFA’s Education Committee tested over
1,400 students for the Level 1 Floral Design
Certification. Shawn Coyle TMFA, Floral Design
Teacher at Skyline High School in Dallas, hosts
one of the five, Level 1 Certification testings
annually sharing that “hosting allows him
to highlight the four year floral program at
Skyline High School.” Many of his floral design
students participate in testing day by assisting
with processing flowers, setting the testing area
and the ever critical cleaning up afterwards!
Shawn believes in the importance of the floral
community and wants his students to be
involved with the industry while still in school,
as many of these students have a sincere desire
to be employed in the floral industry upon
graduation.
TSFA Retail Director Bruce McShan, when
interviewed by a Dallas TV station about his
support of Skyline High School’s Floral Design
Program, shared his beliefs in the floral design
program and the effort that TSFA is making to
build the industry work force in Texas through
education. Bruce has employed over 100 Skyline
floral design students. McShan’s and other retail
flower shops across Texas work with local high
schools to enhance the school’s floral career
training program.
The TSFA Board of Directors and Education
Committee recognize that not all students
who are in high school floral design classes and
become Level 1 Floral Design Certified will
enter the floral industry. Many will and have, but
those that don’t will certainly prove to be a very
educated floral consumer.
Skyline’s Shawn Coyle’s belief in the
program is strong sharing that “certification
empowers the student. They know they have the
ability to accomplish outside the classroom.”
TSFA is providing education for an industry
that needs a qualified workforce. Level 1 Floral
Design Certification is an investment in the
student’s future and in our industry’s future.

A Red Carnation
F
our generations, a love of flowers, the importance of
people, and recollections of a red carnation and the
man who wore it, lead us to the designer that all who know
him simply refer to him as J.
J’s Grandfather, Carnation Joe Green, always wore a red
carnation and had a tip or a technique to make what needed
to be done just a little easier and a whole lot more fun! “He would always figure
out a fun way to complete a project and anyone who has worked even a day in a
flower shop knows that it is all about projects! I have the “lily picker” he created on my
desk as a reminder of my Grandpa. He would send me out to the greenhouse with it to
pluck the pollen out of Easter lilies when they were just opening… he encouraged me to
‘Make it Fun!’ He was the original tip & trick guy! I learned so much from him and carried his
philosophy with me… it was that inspiration that helped me to create my first book 1001 Ideas
for the Floral Industry for the AIFD National Symposium in Atlanta years ago!” beamed J.
Born at a Nebraska Floral Society Growers’ School in March of 1960, J had flowers in his hand
from the time he could walk. His flower interest started at an early age, he worked in the family
business from the time he was twelve. Promoted to delivery at sixteen, classic study of Ikebana in
Japan at eighteen, back to manage at nineteen and then to university study, J was certain to learn all there
was to learn about the flower business. J’s family and two other famous flower industry families would “trade”
their children to maximize the educational possibilities. J spent time with the Veldkamp family in Colorado to
expand his learning while their children came to spend time with the Green’s.
He was inducted into AIFD and was active in leadership for over thirteen years including time on
Membership, Partners and the National Board. He is a member of PFCI and AAF and has attended over thirty
SAF Conventions. He was awarded the Tommy Bright Award.
In 1990 he began working for the John Henry Company and in1994 he left the family business, moved to
Atlanta, and began consulting with several prestigious product companies. His knowledge of flowers and
love of education along with support and encouragement from his husband Kelly allowed him to focus on his
passion for flowers. This focus led to the development of the first web based television show about Flowers
— JTV and later the establishment of what we know today as uBloom.com. His Flower Videos are world
renowned. His Youtube Channel boasts over 26K subscribers and over three million views in less than eighteen
months. Consumers and professionals alike subscribe to uBloom.com. J is an award winning author, having
published two books, Fun with Flowers and Bloom 365. He continues to present flower programs all over the
globe. Sold out appearances at the recent Epcot’s Spring Garden Festival in DisneyWorld are a few of many.
A continuous love of flowers, a memory of the red carnation, and his passion for sharing knowledge
about flowers continues to pave the way to new
opportunities.“I’ve never ‘WORKED’ a day in my life…
what I do is Fun! I learned that lesson from Carnation
Joe long ago.
If you have FUN
and Love what
you do –
Life is Grand”.

florists. We’ve been a faithful partner for over 80 years, and we’ll continue to support you for
years to come. So smile—our future together is looking bright.
