Most of the papers were in folders stored in very large cartons, many in the garage or a shed outside the main house. The folders themselves were not in a particularly consistent order. The papers were in general in quite good condition, free from damp, while only a very few insects were noticed in the initial move. Only a few days were available to move the papers from the house. In 1988, due to pressure on the Library's storage space, the papers were moved to National Archives. The opportunity was taken while the papers were being moved to fumigate them. In November 1988, an arrangement and description programme commenced on the papers. Blocks of numbers were allocated to the different areas of involvement/ interest of Sir Dove-Myer. Within those blocks, series of records were listed -- if there was evidence of previous organisation this was maintained -- where nov evidence of previous order was found, papers were arranged -- with other items on the same subject or with those like in character. Rusty pins and papers were removed; papers were dusted clean and placed in acid-free folders which were in turn placed in waxed boxes. The papers were appraised as they were arranged and described. Virtually all original correspondence was retained, but duplicate material, and papers of in particular the Auckland Regional Authority and the Auckland City Council not concerned with subjects of known interest to Sir Dove-Myer Robinson were destroyed. Overseas printed material on topics of known interest were retained, but a considerable volume of books were accepted by the School Library Service. A number of tapes, and a small volume of photographic prints and papers that were so badly damaged as to be unusable were destroyed. some items of memorabilia were retained by Auckland City Council. In dealing with each item, papers were kept in the order which they were found within an item. If an item was too large to fit in a folder, it was split between the appropriate number of folders. The fact that this split had been made is indicated by the item code given to the item, Every item has code number e.g. 104.22. a split item would have numbers like 104.22 (a), 104.22 (b), 104.22 (c). The splits were done exactly as the item was found which means descending dates for some listings. e.g. 104.22 (a) 1952-58 104.22 (b) 1949-52 104.22 (c). 1948-49 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Sir Dove-Myer Robinson was born in Sheffield on 15 June 1901. His wide-ranging interests have seen him involved in an official capacity in a wide range of organisations, He was initially involved in the motorcycle business (Robinson Motorcycles Limited) and was several times winner of the New Zealand Motorcycle Sidecar championships, and holder of motorcycle economy and speed records. In 1942 he became managing director and chairman of Childswear Limited. When the company was sold to Ross and Glendining in 1959, he retired and decided to stand for public office. He had been a City Council member on Auckland City Council since 1952 – also the Auckland Education Board and Auckland University Council. Dove-Myer Robinson’s first involvement with the public domain came over the issue of the Browns Island sewerage scheme. As president of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage League, he waged a long and ultimately successful campaign to ensure that the Browns Island scheme was replaced with a more suitable alternative. He first became Mayor of Auckland in 1959 and served until 1965 when he lost the election to Dr R G McElroy. He was re-elected in 1968 and was Mayor continuously until 1980 when he was again defeated at the polls. He ran for re-election in 1983 but was once again defeated. His other posts in a public capacity include: Chairman, Auckland Regional Authority Establishment Committee 1960-63 Chairman, Auckland Regional Authority 1963-65 Chairman, Auckland Metropolitan Drainage Board 1953-55 Chairman, Auckland Metropolitan Council 1959-65, 1968- Chairman, Auckland International Airport Committee 1959-61 Chairman, Auckland Metropolitan Road Safety Committee 1959-65 Member, Auckland City Council 1952-59 Member, Auckland Education Board 1952-54 His other interests were nutrition, diet, soil fertility, sewerage purification, health, environmental protection, transportation, fluoridation. He was also an opponent of the Aotea Centre building project. He was knighted in 1970. Sir Dove Myer was married three times and had six children: Adele Thomson Moira Joan Bettine Wilson Anne Heather Martin Thelma Thompson Jennifer Sir Dove Myer died on 14 August 1989 ARCHIVES ARRANGEMENT The blocks of numbers were allocated as follows. 100-109 120-127 130 140-155 160-186 200-210 220-236 240-242 250-252 260-265 280-288 300-318 320-321 Personal Mayoral PACOM Audio-Visual Auckland Regional Authority (ARA) Auckland and Suburban Drainage League Auckland Metropolitan Drainage Board Sewerage and Drainage Board Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board Transport Fluoridation Newspaper Clippings Municipal Association 330-335 340-348 360-370 380-384 390-393 400 410-414 420 425-428 430-436 Nutrition and Health Town Planning and Urban Renewal Elections Auckland City Council Business Auckland University College Council Aotea Centre Local Government Reorganisation Auckland International Airport Visual Items PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE Series 100-109 This block of series consists of papers retained by Sir Dove-Myer as “Personal” rather than in any of his official capacities. Series 100, 101, 102, 104, 108 have been maintained in the order in which they were found. These appear to be be correspondence systems established by Sir Dove-Myer himself. They cover the periods 1930-65; 1980s. Series 100 and 101 are arranged alphabetically by subject or surname of writer. Papers were removed from their file covers and placed in acid free folders. If a file had too many papers to fit in the folder, files were split into a number of folders. This is indicated by the item number. Folders for a split item look like100.12 (a), 100.12 (b). If the item was transferred intact, the item number does not have a letter following it. Series 102 contains papers which were arranged in miscellaneous folders by the letter of name of the firm or writer or subject. Series 105 consists of unfiled personal correspondence for the period 1939-87. Series 103, 106 and 107 are artificial series for correspondence relating to a particular area of Sir Dove-Myer’s personal life – family and friends, knighthood, trust account. 100 101 102 103 104 105 106 107 108 109 Personal Correspondence Personal Correspondence Personal Correspondence Congratulatory message on Knighthood Personal Correspondence Personal Correspondence – unfiled Personal Correspondence—Family and Friends Personal Papers – financial Personal Correspondence Runnymede Inc. The Browns Island Scheme was opposed by the League and pursued to the point of a Royal Commission from 1937 through until 1947. The League (largely influenced by Sir Dove Myer) continued to campaign about the drainage question after the Browns Island Scheme was withdrawn and was involved in the campaign for an effective drainage board. The League had to adopt fundraising methods to maintain its campaign and was ultimately reimbursed in part by the Government. This block of series (200-210) contains minutes and correspondence of the League, submissions to Parliament and Commissions of Enquiry, material published by the League, research material, lists of members, advertisements and circulars relating to the case for the refund of legal expenses in fighting the Browns Island Scheme. 200 Auckland and Suburban Drainage League Minutes and correspondence 201 Auckland and Suburban Drainage League Petitions, Submissions and Supporting Papers to Parliament/ Commissions of Enquiry 202 Auckland and Suburban Drainage League Published Material 203 Auckland and Suburban Drainage League Correspondence 204 Auckland and Suburban Drainage League Research Material 205 Auckland and Suburban Drainage League Lists of Members 206 Auckland and Suburban Drainage League Presidents Reports 207 Auckland and Suburban Drainage League Advertisements and Circulars 208 Auckland and Suburban Drainage League Unpublished Material 209 Auckland and Suburban Drainage League Correspondence re: refund of legal expenses 210 Legal Papers 200.1 Minutes, reports and correspondence 200.2 Minutes of meetings 200.3 ditto 201.1 Report of Auckland Drainage Commission 201.2 “Utilisation of Town and country Wastes, Garbage and Sewage” – evidence presented to Parliamentary Select Committee in support of getting a Royal Commission 201.3 Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association – evidence in support of petition against the Browns Island Drainage Scheme 201.4 Royal Commission on the Sheep Industry 201.5(a) Submissions to Local Bills Committee re Auckland Metropolitan Drainage Bill 1950 201.5(b) ditto 201.6 ditto 201.7 Petition for elective members of Metropolitan Drainage Board 201.8(a) Submissions of evidence to Auckland Drainage Commission 201.8(b) ditto 201.9 Criticism of report by Auckland Drainage Commission by Auckland and Suburban Drainage League 201.10 The Drainage League’s proposals 201.11 Submissions of evidence to Auckland Drainage Commission 201.12 ditto 201.13(a) ditto 201.13(b) ditto 201.14 Miscellaneous papers from Auckland Drainage Commission 201.15 Auckland Drainage Commission evidence of proceedings Vol I and II and report 201.16(a) Submissions to Local Government Commission for Elective Drainage Board 201.16(b) ditto 201.17(a) Commission of enquiry on boundary changes to inner area Vol I and II 201.17(b) ditto Vol III and IV 201.17(c) ditto Vol V 201.18 Commission to enquire into alleged nuisances in Auckland Metropolitan Drainage District 202.1 Published Material 203.1(a) Correspondence from Councils, Boroughs and Hospitals throughout New Zealand in support of petition about garbage and waste 203.1(b) ditto 203.2 Utilisation of garbage, waste and sewage 203.3 Report and questionnaires from medical profession 203.4 Local authorities overseas and report (EIRE) 203.5 Elective members of the Metropolitan Drainage Board 203.6 Public meeting opposing sewage disposal in Auckland Harbour 203.7(a) Mitchell Engineering -- proposed "Savital" Plant -- treatment of waste 203.7(b) ditto 203.8 Local authorities 203.9 United States 203.10(a) Professor Charles Gilman Hyde -- Berkely University of California 203.10(b) ditto 203.11 Miscellaneous Correspondence 204.1 Index book of references 204.2 Float tests, harbour currents, prevailing winds 204.3 Bacteriology 204.4 Pollution of New Zealand Waters 204.5 Processing Systems 205.1 Lists of addresses and some League minutes 205.2 Complete list of members 205.3 Names and addresses of officers elected at annual meeting 206.1 President’s report from annual meeting 206.2 “The League’s Case for further investigation” 207.1(a) Advertisements and Circulars 207.1(b) ditto 207.1(c) ditto 208.1 The Auckland Drainage Story 209.1 Refund of legal expenses 209.2 Fundraising letters 210.1 Legal Papers Series 220-236 The Auckland Metropolitan Drainage Board is a predecessor to the Auckland Regional Authority. Sir Dove Myer travelled extensively overseas and Series 347 contains information he collected in his travels relating to town planning and urban renewal. As Sir Dove Myer had a great personal interest in town planning and urban renewal issues and the papers covered a number of organisations of which he had been a member but in themselves had no order, they were placed in this artificial block of series where it was felt that they would be more accessible to researchers. See also Series 380-384 Auckland City Council Series 120-127 Mayoral Series 360-370 This block of series is arranged by the campaigns which Sir Dove Myer undertook in the long period when he stood for the position of both councillor and mayor.
