VHS welcomes Marisol Rochin-Navarro
By Aften Brown
October 2006
Busy start for the FFA
Submitted by Caroline Bremer
Marisol Rochin-Navarro is an exchange student from Hermosillo, Mexico.
It is not very often that Vienna
High School gets a exchange
student. This year we are very lucky
to have Senior Marisol RochinNavarro, 18, visiting our small
school. Marisol, who likes to be
called Makoll, is from Hermosillo,
Mexico. This will be her fifth year
of high school. She chose to take
on another year of schooling in the
States because she thinks that it will
help her as she grows up and goes
off to college. Marisol said, “Taking
13 years of English really helps me
understand things better.”
Marisol’s school back home is
quite different from ours. The name
of her high school is called Colegio
Regis. The classes there are 45
minutes long and they do not have
lunch at their school, they eat lunch
when they go home for the day. One
thing that is a total turnaround from
us is that their students do not switch
classes, the teachers move from
room to room. Instead of having a
mixture of students, you only have
Seniors in your class, no Juniors or
Sophomores. Also, Colegio Regis
is made up of only the 10th, 11th,
and 12th grades.
Marisol has two older sisters,
Monica, 21, who goes to college and
Gaby, 24, who works as a publishing
agent. Her parents are Ricardo,
who is a dentist and Magui, the
owner of a coffee shop called El
café.
The two things Marisol misses
most back home is her parents and
the food! Marisol said, “It was very
hard to leave home. My parents are
sad because I don’t get to come
home for the holidays!” Marisol
really wants to get to know people
here and learn more about their
culture. “People are always helping
me out with words I do not know or
anything else in general,” said
Marisol. In her free time, Marisol
likes to listen to music, go shopping,
and watch the T.V. show, “Friends.”

Saturday, September 16, 2006,
where the members judged
different types and classes of
horses.
On Tuesday, September 19,
five members competed in the
Land-use Competition in Hamilton
County, where students examine
soil and determine its slope and
quality. Those attending were
Haley Huff, Caroline Bremer, Travis
Stroud, Mitch Anderson, Brenden
Talmage, and Brad Childress.
Travis Stroud received 11th place
overall, and Haley Huff followed
with 12th.
The Chapter Officers lead by
service on Thursday, September 21,
by guiding groups of students
throughout the park for the Safety
Day Camp. That afternoon,
members traveled to Mermet to
compete in the Bowshoot Contest.
Students aimed at targets along a
course and received points for
location on the target. Travis Stroud,
Robby Trigg, Kelin Field, Colten
Stafford, and Cory Ross competed.
Stroud received fifth place overall.
Currently the chapter is
preparing for upcoming contests,
and they are getting pumped up for
National Convention. Club member
Mitch Anderson said, “I really
enjoyed the soil judging contest, and
I look forward to competing in
others! Agriculture is my favorite
class!”

VHS Holds Open House
By Lauren Smith
On Tuesday, September 26,
Vienna High School held their
annual Open House. Many parents came to meet the teachers and
find out how their children were
doing in class.
Open House started at 3:30
p.m. and lasted until 6:30 p.m.
Progress reports were handed out
by Cindy Webb in the commons.
Parents were also given a parent
handbook and and sample packet
with freebies inside. The packets
included chocolate chip cookie
mix, shampoo, deodorant, two
granola bars, and some coupons.
Beta Club members earned
community service hours by
helping serve hamburgers and
hotdogs, along with chips and a
soda, and the best part, the free
ice cream for everyone to enjoy!
It was a very successful
evening. Over 200 parents attended the Open House. Mrs.
Mize, VHS Principal, stated, “I
believe it went very well. It was
an even flow of people, that way
no one had to wait very long on
meeting the teachers.”
Thanks to all teachers, students, and parents that helped
make Open House a success.
Cindy Webb, VHS staff member, handed a parent progress reports and a sample
packet of freebies at Open House on September 26th.

JILG goes to Leadership Development Conference
Submitted by Mrs. Corse
It is always great to skip two
days of school, especially when
you are surrounded by friendly,
new faces. JILG students from
all over Southern Illinois met
in Flora for the 2006 Leadership
Development Conference September 27 and 28.
Students from Southern Illinois came to participate in activities that promote leadership
and to make new friends from
other JILG programs.
This conference couldn’t
have been put together without
a lot of hard work. Regional
Manager Matt Good is one of
the many organizers that
brought this event together. He
really enjoys the activities and
just having all the JILG participants here. “Providing unique

one of the main goals,” stated Good.
Linda Spicer recently retired
after 35 years in the school system
as a superintendent, and is now a
Regional Manager as well. “I didn’t
want to give up working with the
youth, so I figured, getting involved
with JILG would definitely play that
role in my life,” she commented.
After spending two days working together, students learned that it
takes much more than what one person has to offer to make a team.
Students developed into one team
to accomplish a common goal. They
learned firsthand through the activities that there is no I in team.

7 Benefits of being “The New Kid” at VHS
By Koren Holder
The first day of school is
always different and exciting for
all of the Vienna High School
students, but can you imagine
how those new faces feel?
Although it may seem difficult,
there are benefits of being “The
New Kid.”
* Benefit 1: You’ll make
friends fast because everyone
wants to get to know you and see
what you’re about.
*Benefit 2: For you boys,
football is a cool thing with the
girls here. If you played it at you
old school, you are automatically
cool, and since we don’t have
football here, we’ll never know if
you were good or bad.
lost and ask that cute guy to
show you where your class is. It’s
a great way to get to know
people, especially boys.

isn’t that big, you can always get embarrassing stories, like in the
6th grade when you fell in your
first miniskirt and your crush
Tommy saw your granny-panties.
* Benefit 7: Overall, we’re
a great school. We have great
teachers, great classes, and the
best after-school activities. No
matter what you do, it’s going to
be fun here, and you can live life
to the fullest!

Four new teachers welcomed to VHS
By Ashley Henshaw
Vince Kelly
Mia Brown
Janet Flesch
Bethanie Wood
Mr. Kelly is a new math
teacher. He has been teaching for
over 30 years. He chose teaching
because he loves to watch people
learn, “It’s really exciting to watch
a light go on,” he said.
His hobbies are hiking, making and listening to music, reading, and traveling. He attended
Southern Illinois University.
An interesting fact about Mr.
Kelly is that he is not half of a
twin.
Mr. Kelly likes VHS because
of the students and he likes
Johnson County. He choose VHS
because he is a “Southern Illinois
boy.” He says VHS is different
from other schools because it is
in the US. He has previously
taught in foreign countries.
Ms. Brown is the new band
teacher. This her first teaching
job.
She choose to be a band
teacher because she loves music
more than anything.
Her hobbies are playing the
flute, dancing, swimming, and attending symphony concerts.
An interesting fact about Ms.
Brown is that she has two brothers and two sisters that have either majored in music or are currently majoring in music.
Ms. Brown likes VHS
because the school is smaller and
it is easier to get to know students.
She went to a high school with
3,000 students.
Ms. Brown attended the
University of Kansas.
Ms. Flesch is a new academic
enhancement teacher.
This is her ninth year teaching. She choose to teach because
she likes working with kids and
both of her parents were teachers
as well.
Ms. Flesch’s hobbies are
watching movies and reading. An
interesting fact about her is that
she has a Master’s degree from the
University of Illinois.
Ms. Flesh choose VHS because she likes teaching in a small
town atmosphere. She says VHS
is different because everyone
plays a role in the success of the
school.
Ms. Flesch is married and has
two children, Caleb, who is three,
and Cameron, who is four
months.
Ms. Wood is a new academic
enhancement teacher.
This is her seventh year
teaching. She chose teaching because she loves kids and wants to
help them in some way.
Ms. Wood spends most of her
time with her son, who is four, and
also enjoys reading. She attended
Eastern Illinois University.
Ms. Wood chose to teach here
because she heard wonderful
things about VHS and was ready
to move on to something new.
She likes VHS because the
people are nice and helpful. She
says our school is different because we work well together and
the technology is fantastic.

VHS Band steps off to a great start Back Beat CD reviews
By Rebecca Johnson
Under the direction
of Ms. Mia Brown, the
VHS Band has plans for
a busy marching season.
Marching to the tune of
“Bird Land” by Josef
Zawinul, the Marching
Eagles will perform in
the Vienna Oktoberfest
parade on October 7th.
To prepare for the
parades, the band
practices in the evening
on Tuesdays and after
school on Thursday. The
students work on
staying in step, in line,
and marching while
playing the song.
The drum majorettes
are Lori Hannan and
Breanna Morris. They
are responsible for
leading the band during
the parades, directing
the song, and giving
commands for the fun
and crazy moves they
do during the parade.
These may include
‘Scatter’, ‘Stealth’, and
‘Running Man’.

I can only guess what most of
you are thinking already: “He’s
not seriously starting off his
reviewing with a Prince
collection!” Yes, I am. All joking
aside, this is a superb album.
The quality of songwriting,
both lyrical and musical, will
knock you out of your chair.
From the simple love stories like
“Little Red Corvette” and
“Raspberry Beret” to such
classic guitar staples as “ Kiss”
and the ever-popular “Purple
Rain”, you will feel like you are
in the middle of the 80’s with
your hair up in jerry curls!
Here is something a little bit
more modern for the readers
that don’t listen to older groups.
These guys hit it big on their
second release with the hit
“Kryptonite” and managed to
create a great third disc as well.
Some of the huge radio
successes are “Let Me Go”,
“Be Somebody”, and “Father’s
Son”.
I swear I’ve been caught
singing “Let Me Go” even in
the movie theater! It’s that
catchy! This album just shows
the fact that they are getting
better as albums go by.

Yearbook dance is a blast
Page by Lauren Smith
On Friday, September 15, 2006, the VHS
yearbook staff held their annual yearbook dance.
The dance was held from 6:30 - 10:00 p.m. and
Chad Colson was the DJ.
Students had a blast dancing the night away
and signing yearbooks. It was a fun time to share
memories from last year and make some new
ones. Sean Lasley, a VHS junior, stated, “It was
a lot of fun. It was nice to see some of last year’s
seniors. The music was great! All in all, it made
for a great night.”
Mr. Palmer, the yearbook sponsor, was
pleased with the outcome. “It was a nice turnout,” he said. “The kids that showed up had a
good time.” Mr. Palmer is also very interested in
getting feedback from the students on ways to
improve the dance and get more people to come
and enjoy the fun.
There are extra yearbooks in the principal’s
office for students who did not purchase a yearbook, but would now like to. If you ordered a
yearbook, but did not attend the dance, your
yearbooks are also in the principal’s office.
Tori Webb and Emily Ketelsen are working hard collecting money for the yearbook dance.
Rachael Ferrell is showing off a flier for the yearbook dance.
Brett Thompson and Haley Huff are enjoying signing
each other’s yearbooks!
Ashley Childress and Kassidy Shoemaker enjoying
