Rockland County AR 2015_Layout 1 10/5/15 3:36 PM Page 2 ROCKLAND C O M M U N I T Y F O U N D AT I O N The Rockland Community Foundation's mission is to improve the quality of life for all people in the communities we serve by increasing local charitable giving and connecting donors to the causes they care about most. President’s Message The rapid growth of the number of funds we service means great new opportunities as well as a few challenges. We have been able to build on the success of our annual Gala by expanding that seminal event and moving it to the spring season. We were delighted to recognize three community leaders at the event and we have been proud to help introduce County Executive Ed Day and former County Legislature Chair Harriet Cornell to the Community Foundation concept and also to recognize Pat Byrne, our former president for his selfless efforts to build our presence. Several other events including an art show and our very popular “Dine and Jam” evening filled with music and celebrity servers have been hugely successful in helping us to get the word out about how we can serve the local non-profit community. We were successful in joining with other charities to have the county restore funding that was in peril as all municipalities deal with difficult budget issues. While the Foundation receives no county funding, many of the local philanthropies desperately need the government support, and with the concerted effort of our board we joined other charitable organizations to get this funding restored. The funds we host and administer granted over $80,000 during the 2014 calendar year including 9 scholarships, $5,000 in food pantry grants and a wide variety of support to local non-profits. We continue to add new board members to help deliver our message, encourage the long term advantage of endowment funds for sustained local giving, and assist generous local benefactors in meeting their charitable goals with more planned philanthropy. Our sincere thanks to everyone in the community who has made our growth possible. Judge William Sherwood President Did you know... The Rockland Community Foundation is the only non-profit in Rockland that supports other non-profits through fund-based giving. The Rockland Community Foundation holds more charitable funds and touches a wider range of non-profit causes than any other organization in Rockland County. Individuals and businesses have used community foundations as a sustainable way to support local charitable giving for over 100 years. Donor advised funds through community foundations are one of the fastest growing charitable instruments in the country. 2 Rockland County AR 2015_Layout 1 10/5/15 3:36 PM Page 3 “ The Lindsey Stewart and Mark Lennon Memorial Fund was created to honor the loss of our beloved family members Lindsey Stewart and Mark Lennon. During the days after the tragedy, we had the assistance and help of wonderful professionals to support us in creating our own non-profit; however, after many days/weeks/months, we acknowledged the tremendous undertaking we commenced. A friend referred us to the Rockland Community Foundation who has been a great source of guidance and support. Their knowledge, leadership and local presence have proved invaluable in helping us to achieve our goals. Jeannine Lennon Fund Holder Lindsey Steward and Mark Lennon Memorial Fund A Banner Year for New Funds ” At its outset, the Rockland Community Foundation Board established 6 initial funds. By the end of 2014, that number grew to 42 funds, established by charitably minded individuals, businesses and non-profits as a trusted and sustainable way to realize their charitable goals. Creating a fund does not require great wealth, is not complicated, and offers the ability to make a real impact in your own backyard. Celebrity bartenders County Executive Ed Day, People to People's Joe Allen and RCF President Judge Bill Sherwood poured drinks, and Boulder Bird was on hand for photo ops while Seth Cantor, announcer for the Rockland Boulders introduced some great local bands and tested the audience's Rockland knowledge with trivia for prizes. The warm May evening made it possible to open the windows, and with music spilling out into the air there was literally dancing in the street. It was a great night for a great cause. You Have a Say Where Your Money Is Going “ There is a real need for animal advocacy and education programs in Rockland that I wanted to somehow address. The Rockland Community Foundation gave me the opportunity to build a fund to provide grants for programs that will help foster compassion, support responsible pet ownership, and ultimately help reduce the number of unwanted pets in our county. Working with the Rockland Community Foundation, I know I will be able to grow my fund into a sustainable source of granting for many years to come. Susan Lynne Fund Holder ACT for Animals Thank you Rockland Community Foundation. From the moment my mother decided to create a scholarship, all our advisers insisted that the Rockland Community Foundation was our only real choice. They were so right. My mother Sara, a Concentration Camp Survivor herself, focused on giving resources and ideas. The Rockland Community Foundation did all the rest. Now, our patriarch, Holocaust Survivor and Israeli Pioneer Baruch Auerbach and our beloved sister Elana Goldberg live on. Not having a large amount of money to donate to organizations devoted to young people's needs, starting a fund with that goal within the Rockland Community Foundation was an ideal solution for us. We now have our own dedicated Fund under the tax-exempt status of the Foundation, from which we can direct our donations and increase its worth as the Foundation's investments grow. We plan to continue to build this Fund. It's a perfect partnership. Establish your own fund. Don't see a fund that addresses your interests? Do you want to have more control over the recipients of your donor dollars? Start your own fund! It's easy to do and gives you a greater say in where your donor dollars are directed. Best of all, we do all the filing for you! As your partner for charitable giving, the Rockland Community Foundation offers the flexibility of personalized, hands-on gifting programs that will help achieve your financial goals while enabling you to make a real difference right here at home. Additionally, we are the proud recipient of the Rockland Business Association's 2013 Pinnacle Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Non-Profit, so you can rest easy, knowing your donation has been placed with a responsible, caring organization. Remember a loved one with a memorial fund. Help their memory live on with a tax-deductible memorial fund to address a cause that was important to them. So...How Do YOU Want to Give? Here are just some of the ways the Rockland Community Foundation can help personalize your giving: Make a donation now, and decide where it will go later. If you need to take advantage of tax savings this year but do not know exactly how you want to give, establishing a fund us ensures your donation will be secure and responsibly invested until you decide where you want those donor dollars applied. Best of all, you can still take the full deduction at the time you establish the fund! Donate to one or more of our existing funds. With more than 40 funds from which to choose, across a variety of causes, you can split your donation among as many as you see fit. Tax benefits through alternate funding. Instruments such as stock or an IRA Rollover are excellent alternative ways to support charitable causes while still enabling the ability to reduce your tax burden. Invest in the future of your community foundation. Consider a donation to our general fund or our Founders Fund, both of which enable us to continue to function as advocates for local charitable giving. Since we do not pull general operating expenses from our donor funds, we look to the community to help us raise the money needed for our outreach activities. A donation to our general fund or our Founders Fund is an investment in the future of charitable giving right here at home. “ It is this scholarship that will help me to afford supplies and course requirements that will assist me along the path toward the College of Business in Harrisonburg, and I will never forget its roots. As independent philanthropic organizations, they have been building permanent collections of endowed funds contributed from many donors for over 100 years. All community foundations share the common goal of increasing local charitable giving. With nearly 700 community foundations nationwide holding roughly $35 billion in assets, they make up one of the fastest growing sectors of philanthropy in the United States today. Here at home, the task for advocating for local charitable giving and building endowments that support causes in the communities we serve falls to the Rockland Community Foundation. Working in partnership with individuals, families and businesses, we are committed to addressing charitable needs today, while building a stronger, more vital community for tomorrow.
