What Commercial Printers have been through:
• The Big Recession was not just a recession, it was a major
adjustment
• Commercial Industry Sales dropped from 2007 to 2010
by approx. 25%
• And ever since: stability, but no growth, i.e. still approx. 25% below
2007 numbers…
• Result: heavy competition, over-capacity, consolidation
© Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG
• Commercial Printers had to adjust to the lower levels

US Commercial Printing Industry – General Info
AICC Conference 2013, Las Vegas
Folding Carton and Commercial Printers
• Folding Carton Shipments expected to grow in the next years:
• In terms of tonnage
• And even more in $ (more than 2% per year)
• That’s a nice change and reason enough to be interested
• Commercial Printers are still looking to fill capacity
For more information:

• Some of their press equipment can handle folding carton actually
well, however, major challenges remain on the postpress side

Average Printers:
Commercial and Packaging Printers
Folding-Carton / Packaging / Converter
• Sheet optimization
• Asset utilization
• Uptime, OEE
Service offering is important
Non scheduled down-time is the enemy
• Few printers are successful long term in both areas
• Most attempts have been started from Commercial
• Significant investment required to enable competitive cost structure to
established folding carton converters
• Based on annual sales, this investment might not happen
• Niche opportunities, based on customer base, product offering and
geography do exist
© Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG
Commercial:
• “Get the job done”
• Extended services to customer
base
• But: Shift in mindset is ongoing
• To get from here to Packaging:
Invest in Postpress: $$$
• Full focus needed
