My impressions of the Lepidopterological Congress in
Cluj-Napoca (Romania)
In May 2009 more than 150
lepidopterists, including both amateur and
professional researchers from 24 countries,
took part in the 16th European Congress of
Lepidopterology in Cluj-Napoca (Romania).
For me, a 13-year-old girl, a student of
Moscow Chemical Lyceum, it was the first
International Congress in my life. I was
happy to meet scientists from all over the
world. I enjoyed the plenary lectures,
workshops and poster session, where I found
new data about Noctuidae, Tortricidae,
Microlepidoptera, etc. It was interesting to
listen to the talks on molecular studies that
demonstrated
modern
methods
of
investigations in lepidopterology.

I am deeply indebted to the Organizing Committee of the Congress, especially to Prof.
László Rákosy who promoted my participation with a poster on my observations of the
different types of an Acronicta alni L. pupation in the Moscow region. I am very grateful to
Gerhard Tarmann, Jurate and Willy De Prins, Paul Waring, Gabriel Nève and other SELmembers for the personal communication and for their kind attention to me and to my work. I
have gained a great experience and knowledge of lepidopterology. Besides that, it was a
splendid opportunity to discover Romania.
Cluj-Napoca is a large cultural and educational centre with Babes-Bolyai University,
beautiful churches, museums, and a Botanical Garden. Many European species of butterflies
and moths inhabit the Cluj area, and we could see them during the fascinating trip to the
Rimetea region.

I am deeply impressed by the Congress. It inspired me to continue my research on
Noctuidae and helped me very much to better understand the significance of Lepidopterology
as a science in the modern world.
I am looking forward to our next meeting in Luxembourg 2011.

My impressions of the XVIth European Congress of
Lepidopterology
Hi, my name is Kwaku Aduse-Poku, a Ghanaian and recent Topmasters graduate from the
University of Groningen, The Netherlands. My research interests center on the ecology and
evolution of Afrotropical butterflies, and biodiversity conservation in general. I share with you
in this piece my impression of the SEL congress in Cluj-Napoca, Romania as a first timer and
a non-European participant. My overall impression of the XVIth European Congress of
Lepidopterology is a well organized conference with enthusiastic participants. It was an
enrichment on the personal level, with pleasant surprises, endearing experiences, and treasured
networks. I will share all these with you in this writing.
First the surprises; asked me before the congress and I would have told you, I hope to be
meeting 20, at most 30 like-minded persons to share new ideas and discuss recent research
paradigms and techniques of Lepidoptera research. With this supposition, you can imagine
how surprised and impressed I was with well over 300 participants at the opening ceremony.
In the state of astonishment, I said to myself, wow, European butterflies and moths are really
lucky to have all these folks care so much about them. The other side of it, however, is that
they are also highly at risk, to have all these guys running after them. Regardless of which side
of the argument you stand, one thing remains clear; there is relatively massive awareness of
Lepidoptera research and conservation in Europe compared to where I come from. I come
from a continent where the importance of studying and understating even the ecology and
evolution of animals is just beginning to be grasped. The few biodiversity conservation efforts
are geared towards the megafauna (e.g. elephants, rhinos, antelopes, etc) and birds. There is
relatively very little attention on smaller fauna like insects, though they constitute the bulk of
the biodiversity. It is therefore not surprising that I am the first and only student in West
Africa to have taken butterflies as a study subject. Nearly all butterfly studies in Africa are
done by expatriates or South African ‗whites‘.
The other surprise was the popularity of the evolutionary biologist, Niklas Wahlberg. I
worked with Niklas as a visiting student to his laboratory on a master project. He was an
excellent supervisor and I thought I was the only one at the conference who realizes this. It
was thrilling to hear lots of researchers and speakers refer tough questions of molecular
systematics to Niklas, even in his absence.
Touching on my endearing experiences and networks, the congress presented me a rare
opportunity to meet and interact with some of European‘s leading experts in Lepidoptera
research. I talked to as many people as possible and I was delighted by the warmth and
hospitability of most participants. I did feel too different, albeit being the only among over 300
participants. As I discerned, the conference was an old pals reunion, more or less, as I could
see most people in hearty conservation even just at the first instance. I made some friends
some of whom I still keep in touch. My Ukrainian roommate Roman Bidychak was a lively
chap. Again, for me, one of the reasons for attending the Cluj-Napoca congress, aside to
present interesting findings of my Charaxes phylogeography work, was also to take up lessons
and experiences of conference organization. Towards this objective, I had a wide chat with
Rákosy and his team. Miss Raluca Voda was very helpful in this regard.
On the main activity, I think the congress program was packed and strong in content. It
was difficult to select which session to attend; there were clashes between talks I wanted to
hear as they were been held in parallel sessions. Most of the presentations I attended were very
interesting and I could see most of the attendees seemed to have enjoyed the presentations as
well. It was fascinating to listen to talks on various topics; ranging from thermal biology,
evolution, through to geometry, ecology and of course the taxonomy of Lepidoptera. It is

obvious that there is an increasing interest in the science of Lepidopterology. Interestingly,
that was my first time of hearing that word – Lepidopterology. I never knew it existed but it
was not hard to imagine what its meaning was. It is quite a mouthful, nevertheless, it best
defines the scientific portal exclusively focused on butterfly and moth (Lepidoptera) studies. I
knew of lepidopterist and not lepidopterologist. Thanks to the SEL Congress for adding on to
my butterfly-vocabularies.
On the whole, I did enjoy the congress and the post-congress excursion at Rimetea. Even
though the accommodation (for those of us living in private homes) at Rimetea wasn‘t the
best, the fun and experiences will always remain with me: Being drenched in your only pair of
trousers and shoes, the difficulty of descending down a slopingly, slippery mountain, the
endurance of cold nights without room heating, the fun of being with mature, friendly and
open minded house mates (Nick and Zdravko), and the view of spectacular landscapes and
pleasant biodiversity are some of the things I will always remember of Rimetea.
I cease this opportunity to throw in an unsolicited suggestion; and that is that SEL would
consider holding one of its future bi-annual congresses in Africa. A congress in Africa will not
only give participants an opportunity to collect African materials, but also such event will
inspire a lot more Africans into Lepidoptera research, and most important the creation of
awareness for Lepidoptera conservation. We (BC-Ghana, www.bcghana.org) have started
working on this but we firmly believe our efforts will be largely complemented with such a
congress. It is regrettable that, to date, there are still no credible Lepidoptera collections in
Africa, except for a few personal ones stacked in private homes.
Lastly, I would like to thank the SEL Congress organizers for agreeing to cover half the
cost of my accommodation and meals at Bethlen Kata as part of the student bursary
programme.
Long live SEL and long live Lepidopterology and Lepidopterists!

General Meeting of SEL held at Cluj, Romania, 28th May
2009
1.
The President welcomed 45 members to the meeting. He asked them to stand in memory
of those who had died since the last Congress: Werne Flacke, Eelke Houkes, Herbert
Pröse, Paul Stanner and Vladimir Kuznetzov.
2.
The Secretary read the report of Council for the period 10th September 2007 to 26th May
2009.

Treasurer‘s Report was presented by Robert Trusch.

The Auditors‘ Report was presented by Axel Steiner.
5.
The Editor‘s Report was presented by Matthias Nuss.
6.
Discharge of Council, Auditors and Committee Chairman was moved by Harald
Schreiber (see p. 11).
7.
Elections: David Agassiz and Robert Trusch have completed 4 years since being elected
but were eligible for re-election. Nils Ryrholm and Konstantin Efetov retire after their 4
years on Council.
Feza Can (Turkey) and Stoyan Beshkov (Bulgaria) had been nominated and agreed to
stand. There being no other nominations they were declared elected with no one against
or abstaining.
Günter Ebert was elected an Hon. Auditor in place of Axel Steiner.
The President announced that Ingvar Svensson had been made an Honorary Member, this
was greeted with acclaim.
8.
SEL 17th Congress in Luxembourg. Marc Meyer invited the Society, the date is to be
decided but a majority of members favoured Spring.
9.
Future SEL Congresses, the President appealed for offers to host the Congress in 2013,
Bulgaria was suggested and Stoyan Beshkov showed reluctant agreement.
A further Field Congress was suggested.
10. No members had written to the Secretary, but Ole Karsholt suggested a ―Wants and
Exchanges‖ list on the SEL website, especially for literature. Erik van Nieukerken
suggested more news be included in the website.
11. AOB. Willy De Prins asked for photographs from the Congress to be submitted for
possible inclusion in News and in the SEL archives.
Axel Steiner asked about other potential Study Sites, the President outlined possibilities
being considered.
Feza Can spoke warmly about cooperation between SEL and Turkey.
The meeting closed at 4 p.m.


Report of the Council of SEL for the period 10th
September 2007 – 27th May 2009
The XV Congress of Lepidopterology took place in Erkner in September 2007. This was a
successful Congress and Dr Wolfram Mey and colleagues were thanked for a very enjoyable
and well attended Congress.
A General Meeting was held in Erkner as reported in News 43. Gerhard Tarmann was
elected President, Joaquin Baixeras was elected Vice-President and other officers were reelected. Honorary Membership was bestowed upon Günter Ebert, Peter Hättenschwiler, Yuri
Nekrutenko and Niels Peder Kristensen.
Council meetings
Council met briefly following the General Meeting in Erkner, then in Innsbruck on 28-29
October 2008 and at Cluj on 25 May 2009. Matthias Nuss expressed the wish to resign as
Editor and after much searching it was felt that increasing the editorial team may make the
workload tolerable. There was also much email communication between officers and members
between meetings. A venue for the 2011 Congress was sought and after various possibilities
had been discussed the President obtained willingness from Marc Meyer to host a Congress in
Luxemburg.
The Council has invited Sylvia Mader to write a history of the Society to be completed by
the Congress in 2011.
Membership
We were saddened to learn of the death of 4 ordinary members and one Honorary member:
Vladimir Kuznetzov.
Members failing to pay subscriptions were tracked down, many paid the arrears but
a few had to be struck off. The current membership stands at 592. The new flier prepared by
Alberto Zilli is being distributed to help recruit new members for SEL.
The SEL website www.soceurlep.eu, formerly www.soceurlep.org, has been transferred to
an Innsbruck base and is maintained by colleagues of Prof. Tarmann.
Publications
News 43, 44, 45 and 46 have been published. Nota with two parts per year has been
published on time to a high standard, containing many coloured illustrations.
SEL study site
Whilst there have been no organised meetings at the study site, it has been visited by many
members. This has been much appreciated by local hoteliers. Other potential sites are being
explored by Council members and officers.

Treasurer’s Report on the period 01.01.2007 – 31.12.2008
The final calculation for the years 2007 and 2008 and the accounts were audited by Dr.
Rolf Mörtter, Kronau, and Axel Steiner, Wöschbach, without remarks.
The responsible tax office (Karlsruhe town) has confirmed under the 18th of April, 2007
that SEL is released from the corporation tax for 2004, 2005 and 2006. In Germany members
can continue to deduct from tax their fees within Income-tax return. (Next check: 2009)

Cooperation with Apollo Books (AB) concerning Nota lepidopterologica:
A cooperation agreement with AB was signed in April 2009. Explanation: For a number of
years AB has provided the support of our institutional subscribers (libraries, institutions) and
managed the sale of back issues of Nota lepidopterologica. This has been to the benefit of
SEL for a number of years. Now we formalise this with a contract.
I would like to thank especially our local treasurers for their work! I know about the
difficulties reminding members again and again. But it seems to be very necessary, because
the existence of SEL depends on a well balanced account of membership fees. Finally, I wish
to thank our auditors Dr. Rolf Mörtter and Axel Steiner for the careful check in time of the
calculations and accounts.

Protocol of Election Meeting (items 6 and 7 of agenda)
within SEL-General Meeting on May, 28th 2009 (15–17
hours) in Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Members present: 45
Item 6: Discharge of Council, Auditors and Committee chairmen
President Gerhard Tarmann proposed Harald Schreiber for chairman of the Election
Meeting who was accepted unanimously. The latter notified the audience that the General
Meeting had been announced in News No 45 together with date and location of the meeting in
due time according to the statutes of SEL. Members unable to attend the General Meeting had
been notified to use the possibility of postal vote or submit their proposals to the Secretary
General. No postal votes were received. The chairman then recommended discharge of
Council, Auditors and Committee chairmen with reference to the delivered reports of General
Secretary Agassiz for the Council, Treasurer Robert Trusch and the Auditors Rolf Moertter
and Axel Steiner. Discharge was carried unanimously without abstentions.
Item 7: Elections
The audience being asked decided upon open vote and en bloc. President Gerhard
Tarmann, Vice-President Joaquin Baixeras, General Secretary David Agassiz, Treasurer
Robert Trusch and Membership Secretary Willy de Prins were re-elected unanimously
(candidates abstaining) and they agreed to stand. Editors in charge were not subject to election
this time.
Two vacancies needed to be filled for the ordinary members of Council. While David
Demerges, Jörg Gelbrecht and András Kun were allowed to be re-elected, Konstantin A.
Efetov and Nils Ryrholm, after 4 years in service, had to be replaced. Stoyan Beshkov and
Feza Can were suggested by Council. No other candidates were proposed by the audience nor
had been proposed in writing. Those to be re-elected and the new candidates suggested by
Council were elected unanimously and agreed to stand.
One of the auditors needed to be elected. Rolf Moertter was ready for re-election, Günter
Ebert willing to replace Axel Steiner in this position. They were elected (or re-elected,
respectively) unanimously with no abstentions except for their own.

Dear Colleagues, Ladies and Gentlemen! We would like to invite you to the XVII th
European Congress of Lepidopterology, taking place in Luxembourg-City, G.-D. of
Luxembourg from 09th to 15th May 2011. The host of the Symposium is the Department
Zoology of Invertebrates of the National Museum for Natural History in Luxembourg. The

Der Präsident begrüßte 45 Mitglieder zur Sitzung. Er bat sie, eine Gedenkminute
einzulegen für folgende, seit dem letzten Kongress verstorbene Mitglieder: Werne
Flacke, Eelke Houkes, Herbert Pröse, Paul Stanner und Vladimir Kuznetzov.
2.
Der Sekretär verlas den Bericht des Vorstandes für die Zeit vom 10. September 2007 bis
zum 26. Mai 2009.
3.
Der Bericht des Schatzmeisters wurde von Robert Trusch präsentiert.
4.
Der Bericht der Rechnungsprüfer wurde von Axel Steiner präsentiert.
5.
Der Bericht des Redakteurs präsentierte Matthias Nuss.
6.
Die Entlastung des Vorstandes, der Rechnungsprüfer und der Komitee-Vorsitzenden
wurde von Harald Schreiber vorgenommen (siehe S. 16).
7.
Wahlen: David Agassiz und Robert Trusch haben vier Jahre vollendet, seit sie gewählt
wurden, waren aber für die Wiederwahl berechtigt. Nils Ryrholm und Konstantin Efetov
ziehen sich nach vier Jahren aus dem Vorstand zurück. Feza Can (Türkei) und Stoyan
Beshkov (Bulgarien) sind neu berufen worden und damit einverstanden. Da es keine
anderen Nominierungen gab, wurden sie einstimmig gewählt (ohne Enthaltung und
Gegenstimme).
Günter Ebert wurde anstelle von Axel Steiner zum Rechnungsprüfer gewählt. Der
Präsident gab bekannt, dass Ingvar Svensson zum Ehrenmitglied ernannt wurde, dies ist
mit Beifall begrüßt worden.

17. SEL-Kongress in Luxemburg: Marc Meyer stellte die Frage nach dem Datum, die
Mehrheit der Mitglieder entschied sich für einen Termin im Frühling.
9.
Zukünftige SEL-Kongresse: der Präsident bat um Angebote, wo der Kongress 2013
stattfinden solle. Bulgarien wurde vorgeschlagen, Stoyan Beshkov zeigte sich
einverstanden. Eine wurde vorgeschlagen einen weiteren Feldkongress stattfinden zu
lassen.
10. Es gab keine Anträge von Mitgliedern an den Generalsekretär. Ole Karsholt schlug eine
"Such-und Tauschrubrik" auf der SEL-Website vor, besonders für Literatur. Erik van
Nieukerken schlug vor, dass mehr aktuelle Nachrichten auf die Website gestellt werden.
11. Sonstiges: Willy De Prins bat um Fotographien vom Kongress, um diese den SEL-News
und dem Archiv zur Verfügung zu stellen. Axel Steiner fragte nach anderen potenziellen
Studiengebieten, der Präsident berichtete über Ideen, die gegenwärtig betrachtet würden.
Feza Can sprach bedankte sich über gute die Zusammenarbeit zwischen SEL und der
Türkei.
Die Sitzung schloß um 16.00 Uhr.


Bericht des SEL-Vorstandes für den Zeitraum vom
10.9.2007 bis 27.5.2009
Der 15. Kongress für Lepidopterologie fand im September 2007 erfolgreich in Erkner statt.
Wir bedanken uns bei Dr. Wolfram Mey und seinen Kollegen für die angenehme Atmosphäre
des gut besuchten Kongresses.
Über die Hauptversammlung, die in Erkner stattfand, wurde in den SEL-News Nr. 43
berichtet. Gerhard Tarmann wurde zu Präsidenten gewählt, Joaquin Baixeras zum
Vizepräsidenten, die anderen Vorstandsmitglieder wiedergewählt. Zu Ehrenmitgliedern
wurden Günter Ebert, Peter Hättenschwiler, Yuri Nekrutenko und Niels Peder Kristensen
ernannt.
Vorstandssitzung
Der Vorstand traf sich kurz im Anschluss an die Hauptversammlung in Erkner, dann in
Innsbruck vom 28.-29. Oktober 2008 und in Cluj am 25. Mai 2009. Matthias Nuss drückte den
Wunsch aus, als Redakteur zurückzutreten. Auf der Suche nach einer Problemlösung wurde
beschlossen, dass die Erhöhung der Herausgebermannschaft das Arbeitspensum erträglicher
machen kann. Zwischen den Sitzungen gab es häufigen E-Mail-Kontakt zwischen Vorstand
und Mitgliedern. Weiterhin wurde ein Austragungsort für den Kongreß 2011 gesucht.
Nachdem verschiedene Möglichkeiten besprochen worden waren, erhielt der Präsident die
Zusage von Marc Meyer, den Kongress in Luxemburg zu veranstalten.
Der Vorstand hat Sylvia Mader gebeten, eine Geschichte der SEL zu schreiben, welche
zum Kongress 2011 vollendet sein soll.
Mitgliedschaft
Wir sind betrübt über den Tod unseres Ehrenmitglieds Vladimir Kuznetzov sowie vier
weiterer SEL-Mitglieder.
Viele Mitglieder, die ihre Mitgliedbeiträge nicht bezahlten, wurden ausfindig gemacht und
angemahnt. Die meisten davon bezahlten die Rückstände, einige mußten allerdings als
Mitglieder gestrichen werden. Die gegenwärtige Mitgliederzahl beläuft sich auf 592. Der
neue, von Alberto Zilli vorbereitete Flyer wird verteilt, um neue Mitglieder für SEL zu
gewinnen.
Die SEL Website www.soceurlep.eu, früher www.soceurlep.org ist nach Innsbruck
übertragen worden und wird dort von Mitarbeitern Prof. Tarmanns betreut.
Publikationen
Die SEL-News 43, 44, 45 und 46 sind veröffentlicht worden. Die Nota ist mit zwei Heften
pro Jahr ist termingemäß erschienen, viele farbige Abbildungen in guter Qualität enthaltend.
SEL-Studiengebiet
Im Berichtszeitraum gab es keine organisierten Exkursionen in das SEL-Studiengebiet.
Dennoch ist es von vielen Mitgliedern besucht worden, was von den lokalen Hoteliers sehr
geschätzt wird. Weitere potenzielle Studiengebiete werden von Vorstand und Mitgliedern in
Augenschein genommen.

Kassenbericht über den Zeitraum vom 01.01.2007 –
31.12.2008
Die Rechnungen für das Jahr 2007 und 2008 sind von den Kassenprüfern Dr. Rolf Mörtter,
Kronau, und Axel Steiner, Wöschbach, ohne Beanstandungen geprüft worden.
Am 18.04.2007 hat uns das zuständige Finanzamt (Karlsruhe-Stadt) bestätigt, dass SEL für
die Jahre 2004, 2005 und 2006 von der Körperschaftssteuer befreit ist. In Deutschland können
die Mitglieder ihre gezahlten Beiträge weiterhin bei ihrer Einkommenssteuer absetzen (Az.
35022/74235; S 35, SG: 04/03 ). (Nächste Prüfung: 2009.)

Kooperation mit Apollo Books (AB) hinsichtlich Nota lepidopterologica:
Eine Kooperationsvereinbarung mit AB wurde im April unterzeichnet. Zur Erklärung: AB
besorgt seit etlichen Jahren für SEL die Betreuung der institutionellen Abonnenten
(Bibliotheken, Institute) und verkauft ältere Hefte unserer Zeitschrift Nota lepidopterologica.
Dies hat sich zum Vorteil von SEL seit etlichen Jahren bewährt und wird nun auf vertragliche
Basis gestellt.
Ich möcht mich besonders bei unseren lokalen Schatzmeistern für die geleistete Arbeit
herzlich bedanken! Ich weiß, dass es Mühe macht, alle Mitglieder eines Landes immer wieder
an die Beitragszahlung zu erinnern. Aber diese Arbeit ist sehr wichtig, denn sie sichert die
Lebensgrundlage der SEL. Zum Schluss danke ich den Kassenprüfern Dr. Rolf Mörtter und
Axel Steiner für die sorgfältige und termingerechte Prüfung der Rechnungen und Konten.

Protokoll der Wahlsitzung (Punkte 6 und 7 der
Tagesordnung) innerhalb der SEL-Hauptversammlung
am 28. Mai 2009 (15–17 Uhr) in Cluj-Napoca, Rumänien

TOP 6: Entlastung des Vorstands, der Rechnungsprüfer und der Komitee-Vorsitzenden
Präsident Gerhard Tarmann schlug Harald Schreiber als Vorsitzenden der Wahlsitzung
vor, der einstimmig akzeptiert wurde. Letzterer teilte den Anwesenden mit, dass die
Hauptversammlung in News 45 zusammen mit Datum und Ort der Sitzung rechtzeitig, gemäß
den Statuten der SEL, bekannt gegeben worden war. Mitglieder, denen es nicht möglich ist, an
der Hauptversammlung teilzunehmen, waren somit benachrichtigt worden, um von ihrer
Möglichkeit der Briefwahl Gebrauch zu machen bzw. um dem Generalsekretär Vorschläge zu
unterbreiten. Vom Vorstand wurde keine diesbezügliche Post erhalten. Der Vorsitzende
empfahl darauf die Entlastung des Vorstands, der Rechnungsprüfer und der KomiteeVorsitzenden im Hinblick auf die Berichte des Generalsekretärs David Agassiz für den
Vorstand, des Schatzmeisters Robert Trusch und der Rechnungsprüfer Rolf Mörtter und Axel
Steiner. Die Entlastung wurde von den anwesenden Mitgliedern einmütig und ohne
Enthaltungen vorgenommen.
TOP 7: Wahlen
Die Anwesenden wurden befragt, of die Abstimmung offen und im Block durchgeführte
werden dürfe, dies wurde bejaht. Präsident Gerhard Tarmann, Vizepräsident Joaquin Baixeras,
Generalsekretär David Agassiz, Schatzmeister Robert Trusch und Mitgliedersekretär Willy De
Prins wurden einmütig bei Enthaltung der Kandidaten wiedergewählt: Die Gewählten
akzeptierten die Wahl. Die verantwortlichen Redakteure waren dieses Mal nicht der Wahl
unterworfen. Zwei Stellen der einfachen Vorstandsmitglieder mussten neu besetzt werden,
während David Demerges, Jörg Gelbrecht und András Kun wiedergewählt werden durften.
Konstantin A. Efetov und Niels Ryrholm mussten nach vier Jahren im Vorstand
satzungsgemäß ersetzt werden. Für sie wurden vom Vorstand Stoyan Beshkov und Feza Can
vorgeschlagen. Aus dem Auditorium oder schriftlich an den Vorstand waren keine Kandidaten
vorgeschlagen worden. Diejenigen, die wiedergewählt wurden und die neuen, vom Vorstand
vorgeschlagenen Kandidaten wurden einmütig gewählt und nahmen die Wahl an. Einer der
beiden Rechnungsprüfer musste neu gewählt werden. Rolf Moertter war zur Wiederwahl
bereit, Günter Ebert bereit, sich neu wählen zu lassen um Axel Steiner in dieser Position zu
ersetzen. Beide wurden gewählt (beziehungsweise wiedergewählt), einstimmig, ohne
Enthaltungen abgesehen der eigenen.

Sehr geehrte Kollegen, meine Damen und Herren!
SEL lädt sie zum XVII. Europäischen Kongress für Lepidopterologie in Luxemburg-Stadt,
Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, ein, der vom 9. bis 15. Mai 2011 stattfinden wird. Gastgeber
der Tagung ist die Abteilung für Zoologie der Invertebraten des Nationalmuseums für
Naturkunde in Luxemburg. Die Tagung findet im ―Kulturzentrum für Tagungen‖ in
unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft des Naturkundemuseums statt.

Procès-verbal de l’Assemblée générale de la SEL tenue à
Cluj, Roumanie, le 28 mai 2009
1.
Le Président souhaite la bienvenue aux 45 membres présents. Il leur demande de se lever
en mémoire des membres décédés depuis le précédent congrès, soit : Werne Flacke,
Eelke Houkes, Herbert Pröse, Paul Stanner et Vladimir Kuznetzov.
2.
Le Secrétaire a lu le rapport du Conseil pour la période du 10 septembre 2007 au 26 mai
2009.
3.
Robert Trusch a présenté son rapport en tant que trésorier.
4.
Axel Steiner a présenté le rapport des vérificateurs des comptes.
5.
Matthias Nuss a présenté le rapport du Comité d‘édition.
6.
Harald Schreiber a demandé la décharge du Conseil, des vérificateurs des comptes et du
Président du Comité (voir p. 21).
7.
Élections: David Agassiz et Robert Trusch sont membres du Conseil depuis quatre ans
mais sont éligibles de nouveau. Nils Ryrholm et Konstantin Efetov sont arrivés à la fin
de leur mandat de quatre ans également.
Feza Can (de Turquie) et Stoyan Beshkov (de Bulgarie) ont été mis en nomination et
étaient d‘accord pour se présenter. Étant donné qu‘aucune autre nomination n‘a été
présentée, ils ont été élus sans opposition ou abstention. Günter Ebert a été élu
vérificateur des comptes en remplacement d‘Axel Steiner.
Le Président a annoncé qu‘Ingvar Svensson avait été élu Membre honoraire, ce qui a été
applaudi chaleureusement.
8.
Le 17e Congrès de la SEL au Luxembourg. Marc Meyer y a invité la Société. La date
reste à décider, mais une majorité des membres favorise le printemps.
9.
Les congrès futurs. Le Président a demandé des suggestions pour l‘organisation du
Congrès de 2013. La Bulgarie a été suggérée et Stoyan Beshkov s‘est montré d‘accord
avec hésitation.
On a manifesté un intérêt pour que se tienne un autre Congrès de terrain.
10. Personne n‘avait adressé de demande au Secrétaire, mais Ole Karsholt a suggéré qu‘on
ajoute une liste de « desiderata » sur le site internet de la SEL, en particulier pour y
échanger de la littérature. Erik van Nieukerken a suggéré l‘ajout d‘un plus grand nombre
de nouvelles sur le site Internet.
11. Willy De Prins a demandé qu‘on lui fournisse des photographies prises lors du Congrès
afin qu‘il puisse les inclure dans le bulletin de nouvelles et dans les archives de la
Société.
Axel Steiner a demandé des nouvelles d‘autres Sites d‘études potentiels. Le Président a
mentionné les possibilités envisagées.
Feza Can a parlé chaleureusement de la coopération entre la SEL et la Turquie.
Les délibérations de l‘Assemblée se sont terminées à 16h00.


Rapport du Conseil pour la période du 10 septembre
2007 au 27 mai 2009
Le XVe Congrès de la SEL s‘est tenu à Erkner en septembre 2007. Ce fut un événement
couronné de succès, ayant attiré beaucoup de participants, et le Dr Wolfram Mey et ses
collaborateurs ont été chaudement remerciés.
Une Assemblée générale s‘est tenue à Erkner tel que rapporté dans notre Bulletin de
nouvelles, n° 43. Gerhard Tarmann a été élu président, Joaquin Baixeras vice-président et les
autres membres du Conseil ont été réélus. Günter Ebert, Peter Hättenschwiler, Yuri
Nekrutenko et Niels Peder Kristensen ont été élus membres honoraires.
Réunions du Conseil
Une brève réunion a eu lieu à la suite de l‘Assemblée générale d‘Erkner. Ensuite, des
réunions se sont tenues à Innsbruck les 28 et 29 octobre 2008 et à Cluj, le 25 mai 2009.
Matthias Nuss a exprimé son désir de démissionner de son poste d‘éditeur de Nota
lepidopterologica, mais après une recherche intensive, il a convenu qu‘agrandir l‘équipe
éditoriale pourrait rendre sa charge de travail tolérable. Plusieurs échanges de courriels ont
également eu lieu entre les membres du Conseil entre les réunions. On a cherché l‘endroit où
pourrait se tenir le congrès de 2011 et après discussions portant sur plusieurs possibilités, notre
président a obtenu le consentement de Marc Meyer afin qu‘il organise ce congrès au
Luxembourg. Le Conseil a également invité Sylvia Mader à écrire l‘histoire de la Société, à
compléter d‘ici au congrès de 2011.
Effectif
Nous avons eu la tristesse d‘apprendre le décès de quatre membres ordinaires et d‘un
membre honoraire, Vladimir Kuznetzov.
Les membres ayant tardé à payer leurs cotisations depuis plus d‘un an ont été contactés.
Plusieurs d‘entre eux les ont payées, mais certains ont dû être rayés de la liste des membres.
L‘effectif s‘élève maintenant à 592 membres. Le nouveau dépliant publicitaire, préparé par
Alberto Zilli, est maintenant distribué afin de recruter de nouveaux membres.
Le site web, www.soceurlep.eu, auparavant www.soceurlep.org, a été transféré à Innsbruck
où il est entretenu par des collègues du Prof. Tarmann.
Publications
Les Bulletins de nouvelles 43 à 46 ont été publiés. Nota, à raison de deux numéros de
grande qualité par année, a été publiée à temps et avec de nombreuses illustrations en couleur.
Site d’étude de la SEL
Même si aucune rencontre n‘a été organisée sur le site d‘étude, plusieurs membres l‘ont
visité. Les membres du Conseil examinent d‘autres sites d‘étude potentiels.

Rapport du trésorier pour la période du 1er janvier 2007
au 31 décembre 2008
Les calculs finals pour les chiffres de 2007 et 2008 ont été examinés par le Dr Rolf
Mörtter, de Kronau, et Axel Steiner, de Wöschbach, sans commentaires.
L‘entité administrative responsable des impôts de la SEL, soit la ville de Karlsruhe, a
confirmé le 17 avril 2007 que notre société est exemptée de l‘impôt des corporations pour
2004, 2005 et 2006. En Allemagne, les membres peuvent continuer de déduire leur cotisation
de leurs impôts. La prochaine vérification est prévue en 2009.

Une entente de coopération a été signée avec Apollo Books en avril 2009. En effet, depuis
un certain nombre d‘années Apollo Books s‘occupe des cotisations de nos membres
institutionnels (bibliothèques, institutions) et s‘occupe des ventes d‘anciens numéros de Nota
lepidopterologica au bénéfice de SEL. Ces services ont donc été formalisés par un contrat.
J‘aimerais remercier chaleureusement tous les trésoriers locaux pour leur travail. Je
connais les difficultés inhérentes au fait de rappeller aux membres de payer leur cotisation à
temps. Mais il semble que ce soit vraiment nécessaire car la santé financière de notre société
dépend de la réception de ces fonds à chaque année. Pour finir, je remercie nos examinateurs
des comptes, Rolf Mörtter et Axel Steiner, pour leur travail précis et sans délais.

jour) tenues lors de l’Assemblée générale de la SEL le 28
mai 2009 (entre 15 et 17 heures) à Cluj-Napoca,

Point 6 : Décharge du Conseil, des vérificateurs des comptes et des présidents de comités
Le président Gerhard Tarmann a proposé la candidature d‘Harald Schreiber comme
président d‘élection, ce qui a été accepté à l‘unanimité. Ce dernier a noté que l‘annonce de
l‘Assemblée générale, ainsi que les date et localisation de l‘Assemblée avaient été faites à
temps dans le n° 45 du bulletin de nouvelles, selon les statuts de la SEL. Les membres n‘ayant
pas la possibilité d‘être présents avaient été invités à envoyer leurs propositions à soumettre au
vote par la poste. Aucun vote n‘a été reçu de cette manière. Le président a recommandé la
décharge du Conseil, des vérificateurs des comptes et des présidents de comités en référence
aux rapports du secrétaire David Agassiz pour le Conseil, du trésorier Robert Trusch et des
vérificateurs Rolf Moertter et Axel Steiner. Cette décharge a été acceptée unanimement, sans
abstentions.
Point 7 : Élections
Suite une demande à l‘audience, celle-ci a décidé que le vote serait ouvert et en bloc. Le
président Gerhard Tarmann, le vice-président Joaquin Baixeras, le secrétaire général David
Agassiz, le trésorier Robert Trusch et le secrétaire aux membres Willy de Prins ont été élus
unanimement, après avoir accepté leurs candidatures et s‘être abstenus de voter. Les
rédacteurs n‘étaient pas soumis à élection cette fois-ci.
Deux postes de membres ordinaires devaient être comblés. Alors que David Demerges,
Jörg Gelbrecht et András Kun avaient la possibilité d‘être réélus, Konstantin A. Efetov et Nils
Ryrholm, après quatre années de service, devaient être remplacés. Stoyan Beshkov et Feza
Can ont été suggérés par le Conseil comme nouveaux membres ordinaires. Aucun autre
candidat n‘a été proposé par l‘audience ou par la poste. Ceux qui pouvaient être réélus et les
nouveaux candidats ont accepté leurs candidatures et ont été élus unanimement.
Un nouveau vérificateur des comptes devait être élu. Rolf Moertter se présentait à nouveau
et Günter Ebert acceptait de remplacer Axel Steiner. Ils ont été respectivement réélu et élu à
l‘unanimité et sans abstentions, à l‘exception des leurs.

XIIth International Symposium on Zygaenidae
5–9 May 2010, Hatay, Turkey
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
The XIIth International Symposium on Zygaenidae will be
held at the Mustafa Kemal University, Antakya (province of
Hatay, Turkey). The modern city of Antakya stands on the
site of the ancient city of Antiochia and is a beautiful setting
to hold such a meeting as, apart from having a fascinating
history, it has a rich flora and associated fauna and is within
easy reach of the Toros Dağları, a beautiful mountain range
that stretches along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea from
south-western Turkey to south-eastern Anatolia.
It is expected that candidates attending the symposium will arrive on 5 May when they will
be able to register and check in at their hotel. The scientific programme starts on 6 May and
ends on 8 May and will include lectures with special emphasis on ecology, biology, genetics,
distribution, endemism, taxonomy and conservation. Moreover, the results of fieldwork
illustrated by photographs of living Zygaenidae and their biotopes are also very welcome and
in fact are strongly recommended as additional subjects.

28th Nordic-Baltic Congress of Entomology
The XXVIIIth Nordic-Baltic Congress of Entomology will
be held in Lithuania on the 2nd – 7th of August, 2010. The
Congress will be held in Birštonas by the banks of the
Nemunas river inside the Nemuno Kilpos Regional Park
(Prienai district, Central Lithuania). The Nemunas River, one
of the largest rivers of the Baltic region, is characterised by a
generally straight valley.
In the middle part of its course the Great Nemunas Loops are distinct features that occupy
an area of 320 km2 near the Birstonas Resort. The Nemunas valley here is 1.5–5 km wide and
45–80 m deep. The loops are cut into a glaciolacustrine plain confined between glacial and
deltaic relief complexes and formed during the two last phases of glaciation
(www.nemunokilpos.lt/ and/or www.visitbirstonas.lt/lit/English). The Park provides excellent
possibilities for collecting and observing arthropods in different types of habitats.
All Nordic and Baltic scientists and students, also our colleagues from other countries
doing research in entomology are heartly welcomed to the Congress. Besides insects, the
congress covers also other terrestrial arthropods: mites, arachnids, etc. Plenary sessions,
sections, poster presentations and excursions will be organised.
Submission of abstracts: March 15th, 2010. Abstracts are required for all presentations,
including posters. Abstracts should be prepared following the abstract preparation guidelines.
Submission of articles of oral presentations for special issue devoted to the Congress: at the
Congress or until August 31st, 2010. Articles should be prepared following the instructions for
authors. All articles will be reviewed.
