2010 is the jubilee year for FGUP “Izhevsky Mekhanichesky Zavod” or 65th anniversary
of the Air Weapon production. Crafting of IMZ Air Guns started in 1945 in period of
gradual conversion from military to civilian. Since then, the marketing of air weapon
took firm place and strengthened its positions, distinguished by stability of growth
rate. Actually the ratio of air guns in production of all IMZ weapons equals to 54% and
the model line includes products of all lawful segments from plinking guns to powerful
air “hunters” sold against licence.

Air Weapons.
The history of manufacture is indissolubly connected with names of outstanding designers, whose ideas and concepts are actual and interesting up to now. The sources
of origin of the Izhevsk air guns point to Anatoly A. Klimov, as the founder of hunting
classics. Together with N. P. Proshutin (designer) they developed the first SPP (sporting air pistol) and PSR (air sporting shotgun). Release of these models proceeded not
for long, but paved the way for other products, including those produced till now. For
example, the IZH-38 Air Rifle could be named as one of the most popular models the
manufacture of which resulted in ca. 2 million units.
In the sixties of XX century, conceived by German arms industry begins the “Air guns
boom”, which has pushed designers of all world to assimilate new, hitherto unknown
trends. As regards the FGUP “Izhevsky Mekhanichesky Zavod” development of air
weapons began in 1973 by the initiative of Herman Y. Protopopov. Induced by the fragmentary information on foreign developments, he decided to design the compressiontype weapon, as a result of this the first Russian pistols and rifles such as mod. IZH-32,
IZH-33, IZH-32BK, IZH-32M & IZH-33M appeared.
One of the basic vectors of development of all countries has been directed those years
to advance sports, including sports shooting. Therefore, the compression-type pistols
and rifles were in popular demand among Russian shooters. Record for the number of
awards can be rightly confered on the IZH-46 pistol, production of which started in
1988. In the same year Sergey Barmin - international class master of sports, with the
IZH-46 pistol won the champion gold medal in frames of team championship at the
Europe Championship in Saraevo.
The sporting pistol IZH-46 owns top awards from World and European Championships.
Steve Ware, editor of the IHMSA News US magazine, after winning the 26th annual
International Championship of the International Association of pistol shooting at metal silhouettes (IHMSA), addressed to dealers of FGUP “IMZ” with words of gratitude:
“Your pistol of course is a world-class pistol, and I am very grateful to you that it appeared in our country. Thanks again for your support and for the excellent weapon. “

Serial production of IZH-46M (MP-46M) continues at present.
Among the spring-piston weapons the most popular that time were: IZH-53 pistol, IZH-22, IZH-38, IZH-60 and IZH–61 rifles. In 1993 the gun expert of the “Vizir”
German magazine Ulrich Ayhshtedt appreciated the rifle IZH-60 as “the most interesting rifle of all that Russians have ever offered on the arms market”. On
the basis of these models evolved the MP-512 rifle. Now it’s available in classic performance and new futuristic design with improved ergonomics. The
hunting-fanciers prefer the MP-513M rifle with muzzle energy exceeding 7.5J.
Among the IMZ products the MP-661K “Drozd” pistol is particularly noteworthy. This
is unique automatic weapon with an electronic trigger, size and style of which correspond to the modern submachine gun. The item allows single and burst shots. In 2007
there appeared a new model with hopper-type magazine, which facilitates the use of
the gun. The modular gas-cylinder pistol MP-651K is also very interesting. Pistol allows
the owner to transform it into a rifle, a submachine gun or a pistol with the butt. It is
important to note that in 1997 this model has received the award of the Russian Designers Union. One of the latest developments is the MP-651K Sport pistol - intended
to acquire the initial skills in shooting as well as for students of youth sport schools.
The next phase of development was the creation of pre-charged pneumatic (PCP). Actually this is the most prospective trend in air guns segment, as the PCP guns can achieve
greater muzzle energy with no recoil, without strong dependence on muzzle energy from
the ambient air temperature (in contrast to the CO2 air guns) and excessive efforts to reload the weapon (unlike spring-piston airguns). The IMZ model line of PCP guns includes:
MP-573 sporting PCP rifle, MP-574K hunting PCP rifle and MP-672 sporting PCP pistol. The
pre-charged pneumatic system for these products is also developed by our company.
Designers of FGUP “Izhevsky Mekhanichesky Zavod” continue to improve existing
models and develop new air guns.
Since 2009, the marking of all IMZ products has changed from “IZH” to “MP”. For example, IZH-60 is renamed to MP-60, IZH-46M - to MP-46M, etc.

MP-438 is the result of deep upgrading of MP-35M pistol, that previously enabled the
shooters of USSR / Russia teams to win 12 medals (5 gold medals) in World and European competitions and championships and to gain two victories in the World Cup-finals.
The novelty satisfies the competition rules for standard pistols and rapid fire shooting.
New design elements provide reliability and good stability in shooting, namely:
Slide shock-absorber to soften the recoil in a rearward position;
Balancing weights;
Rear sight is located directly on frame and remains fixed at stripping;
More gentle bullet slope in the chamber mouth and additional
lever
help
to
improve
the
kinematics
of
cartrige
feed and to exclude sticking and damage of the bullet head.
In general, new sporting pistol “Baikal” complies with all up-to-date requirements for
this class of weapon and provides its owner with comfort shooting and great results.
