Shipbuilding and metalworking have a long tradition in
Mecklenburg-West Pommerania. The region’s shipbuilding
blossomed early in the 13th century in the times of the
Hanseatic League. Over 250 years ago, when Friedrich the
Great ordered the “Royal Prussian Ironworks in Torgelow“
built in 1753, the region began to develop into an iron foundry and metalworking centre.
In the 20th century shipbuilding and metalworking experienced highs and lows due to wars and nationalisation of the
industries.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the shipyards were
rebuilt into world-class facilities. Numerous small and medium-sized businesses in the metalworking industry have
settled in the immediate vicinity of these shipyards. Joint
projects between research institutes and businesses have
evolved into a well-established network of interrelationships.
The traditional economic sector of shipbuilding and metalworking industries has developed into the region’s most

With its world-class shipyards West Pommerania is a futureoriented maritime centre of global importance. The marine
industry is a key business area and a growth industry: Due

Shipbuilding - together with its suppliers, service providers

Traditionally shipbuilding has played a major role in West

the region include the “Volkswerft“ shipyard in Stralsund,
“Peene-Werft“ shipyard in Wolgast, “Schiffswerft“ shipyard
in Barth as well as the “Horn“ ship-yard in Wolgast.
Located in Greifswald, HanseYachts AG is one of the three
largest serial boat makers of sailing and motor yachts worldwide. Its brands include “Hanse“, “Moody“ and “Fjord“.
The large number of subcontractors with internationally recognised products
and capabilities speaks for itself. Parts from West Pommerania companies that
are produced in Lubmin, Greifswald and Wolgast, for example, include ship
