In terms of the issue of sustainability, Heimtextil
is ideally positioned. The Green Directory contains
a list of 128 exhibitors at the fair who use sustainable production methods, sorted separately by
hall level and alphabetically. It gives details of
the “Be inspired” special show and the Young
Creations Award: Upcycling. In addition, two experts discuss the issue of cotton and sustainability
from different perspectives. You will also find important information about the various labels used
for certification. When you are walking round the

Wachstumskurs
Nachhaltig produzierte Textilien werden seit Jahren
verstärkt nachgefragt. Ein Ende dieser internationalen
Entwicklung ist nicht abzusehen und spiegelt sich
im breiten Angebot auf der Messe wider. Neben
der Veröffentlichung dieser Einkaufshilfe fördert die
Heimtextil dieses Segment unter anderem mit der
Sonderschau „Be inspired“ in Halle 11.1. Hier werden
für den Facheinzelhandel praxisorientierte Gestaltungsideen gezeigt. Des Weiteren wurde in diesem Jahr der
Design-Preis Young Creations Award: Upcycling ins
Leben gerufen.
Sustainable textiles

Sustainably produced textiles have been strongly in
demand for some years now. This international trend
looks set to continue and is reflected in the broad
range of goods and services at the fair. In addition to
publishing this buying guide, Heimtextil also supports
the segment with a number of initiatives, including
the “Be inspired” special show in Hall 11.1 where practical design ideas are presented to the retail trade.
In addition, the Young Creations Award: Upcycling
design award has also seen its premiere this year.

Dienstleistungen in über 120 Produktgruppen. Zeicheninhaber ist das Bundesumweltministerium.
bluesign®
verfolgt das Ziel, entlang der gesamten textilen Herstellungskette die Ressourcennutzung zu optimieren, Umwelt
und Gesundheit zu schützen sowie die Arbeitssicherheit
zu verbessern.
BSCI
ist eine Initiative der Foreign Trade Association (FTA), an
der derzeit über 950 Mitgliedsunternehmen zur Prüfung
und Verbesserung von Social Compliance teilnehmen.
Der SA8000® Standard gilt bei BSCI als „Best Practice“
für Zulieferbetriebe. Neben der Auditierung durch
unabhängige Prüfinstitute stellen Schulungen für Produktionsstätten sowie der Dialog mit Stakeholdern auf
verschiedenen Ebenen Säulen der BSCI dar.
Cotton made in Africa
ist eine Initiative, die mit ihrem unternehmensgetriebenen
Ansatz zu Armutsbekämpfung und Umweltschutz in
Afrika beiträgt. In Schulungsmaßnahmen lernen Kleinbauern, umweltfreundlich und effizient Baumwolle zu
produzieren, die dann von internationalen Textilunternehmen zu Weltmarktpreisen für ihre globalen Wertschöpfungsketten beschafft werden kann. Die Bauern profitieren durch höhere Erträge, verbessertes Einkommen,
Infrastrukturmaßnahmen und Investitionen in Bildung.
Cradle to Cradle®
ist ein Standard, der auf Materialkreisläufen basiert.
Erforderlich ist: Nutzung von Materialien, die entlang
ihres Lebenslaufes keine Gefahr für Gesundheit und
Umwelt darstellen, Produkt- und Systemdesign zur
Material-Wiederverwendung, die Nutzung erneuerbarer
Energien, Wassereffizienz, höchste Qualität der Produktionsabwasser sowie strategische Sozialverantwortung.
The labels from A – Z
Blue Angel/Blauer Engel
is the first and most known environmental label in Germany.
It labels more environmental friendly products and services
in more than 120 product groups. The label is owned by the
German federal environment ministry.
bluesign®
aims to optimize resource productivity, to protect environment and health as well as to increase safety at work along
the entire textile manufacturing chain.
BSCI
is an initiative of the Foreign Trade Association (FTA) for
the verification and improvement of social responsibility
compliance currently comprising over 950 member companies. The SA8000® is BSCI’s best-practice standard for
supplier companies. In addition to auditing by independent
certification agencies, the main areas of BSCI activity are
providing training for production facilities and maintaining
dialogue with stakeholders at various levels.
Cotton made in Africa
is an enterprise-driven initiative to fight poverty and protect
the environment in Africa. Small-scale farmers are taught
efficient and environmentally friendly methods for the production of cotton, which can then be bought by international textile companies at world market prices for their global
value chains. The farmers benefit from higher earnings,
better incomes, infrastructure development measures and
investment in education.
Cradle to Cradle®
is a material-cycle based standard. It requires achievement
in: use of materials that are safe for human health and the
environment across their life cycles, product and system
design for material reutilisation, use of renewable energy,
efficient use of water, and maximum water quality associated with production as well as company strategies for
social responsibility.

EU Ecolabel
Zur Vergabe des Siegels gehören die Einhaltung von Obergrenzen für Energieverbrauch, Emissionen und Gewässerimmissionen in Herstellungsprozessen sowie minimierte
Rückstände umwelt- oder gesundheitsschädigender Stoffe.
Fairtrade®
Das Fairtrade Certified Cotton-Siegel zeichnet Produkte
aus, die aus Fairtrade-zertifizierter Baumwolle produziert
wurden. Ein fester Mindestpreis, eine Fairtrade-Prämie
sowie Umweltkriterien sorgen dafür, dass die Lebens- und
Arbeitsbedingungen von Kleinbauernfamilien verbessert
werden. Die weiteren Betriebe innerhalb der Lieferkette
müssen einen Nachweis über die Einhaltung der ILO-Kernarbeitsnormen erbringen.
FSC®
Dieser international anerkannte Standard zertifiziert Holzund Papierprodukte aus verantwortungsvoller Forstwirtschaft nach weltweit einheitlichen und strikten Kriterien
Global Recycling Standard
Der GRS ist ein Zertifikat für Firmen, die Produkte mit
recycelten Materialien herstellen und/oder verkaufen. Der
Standard deckt die gesamte Lieferkette ab und beinhaltet
die Verfolgbarkeit der Materialien, Umwelt- und Sozialvorgaben und die Kennzeichnung. Der GRS wurde für die Textilindustrie entwickelt, kann aber auch auf andere Produkte
anderer Industrien angewandt werden. Eine neue Version
des GRS ist in der Entwicklung und soll sich auch mit der
Verwendung von Produktionschemikalien befassen.
GoodWeave™
hat zum Ziel, ausbeuterische Kinderarbeit in der Teppichindustrie abzuschaffen. Die Initiative wurde von NichtRegierungsorganisationen und der Teppichindustrie
gegründet. GoodWeave unterstützt Bildungs-, Sozial- und
Umweltprogramme in folgenden Produktionsländern:
Afghanistan, Indien und Nepal.

EU Ecolabel
This label includes caps for energy consumption, airborne
and waterborne emissions from production processes.
Additionally it stands for the reduction of environmental
or health damaging residues.
Fairtrade®
The Fairtrade Certified Cotton mark denotes products that
have been made from certified Fairtrade cotton. A fixed
minimum price, a Fairtrade premium and environmental
criteria ensure that the living and working conditions
of the families of small farmers are improved. The other
enterprises within the supply chain must provide evidence
of compliance with the ILO core labour standards.
FSC®
This internationally recognised standard certifies timber
and paper products from responsible forestry production
according to globally uniform and strict criteria.
Global Recycling Standard
The GRS is intended for companies making and/or
selling products with recycled content. The standard
applies to the full supply chain and addresses traceability, environmental principles, social requirements,
and labeling. Developed with the textile industry in
mind, the GRS may also be applied to products from any
industry. A new version of the GRS is being developed
and will also address chemical inputs.
GoodWeave™
has the aim of eliminating exploitative child labour in
the carpet industry. The initiative was established by
non-governmental organisations and the carpet industry.
GoodWeave supports educational, social and environmental programmes in the following carpet-making countries:
Afghanistan, India and Nepal.

GOTS
der Global Organic Textile Standard, ist ein internationales
Zertifikat für die Kontrolle von Produktionsprozessen entlang der Lieferkette biologisch angebauter Naturfasern.
Er beinhaltet auch die Einhaltung von Sozialstandards.
ISO 14001
ist ein internationaler Zertifizierungsstandard für Umweltmanagementsysteme. Er kann sowohl auf Produktions- wie
auch Handelsunternehmen angewandt werden.
OE Standards
dokumentieren den Kauf, den Umgang und die Verwendung von zertifizierter Bio-Baumwolle bei Garnen, Stoffen
und Endprodukten. Der OE 100 wird für Produkte aus 100 %
kontrolliert biologisch angebauter Baumwolle verwendet,
während der OE Blended für Produkte mit mindestens
5 % Bio-Baumwolle verwendet wird. Die Standards sind
„Chain-of-Custody“ Standards, die sich nur mit dem kontrolliert biologischen Faseranbau befassen – weder andere
zugegebene Materialien noch soziale oder ökologische
Produktionsauswirkungen werden kontrolliert. Neue
Versionen der OE Standards sind in der Entwicklung und
sollen auf alle kontrolliert biologisch angebauten Fasern
angewandt werden können.
Oeko-Tex® Standard (1000 / 100plus)
Der Oeko-Tex® Standard 1000 zertifiziert Betriebsstätten
entlang der gesamten Lieferkette hinsichtlich ihrer ökologischen und sozialverträglichen Produktionsbedingungen.
Der Oeko-Tex® Standard 100plus vereint den Oeko-Tex®
Standard 100 – der schadstoffgeprüfte, humanökologisch
unbedenkliche Textilprodukte kennzeichnet – und den
Standard 1000.
The labels from A – Z
GOTS
the Global Organic Textile Standard, is an international
certificate for the monitoring of production processes
along the supply chain of organically produced natural
fibres. It also includes compliance with social standards.
ISO 14001
is an international certification standard for environmental
management systems. It can be applied to production
and trading companies.
OE Standards
track and document the purchase, handling and use of
certified organic cotton in yarns, fabrics, and finished
goods. The OE 100 applies to goods made with 100 % organically grown cotton, while the OE Blended applies to
goods made of a blended material containing a minimum
of 5 % organically grown cotton. The standards are chain
of custody standards that only back up organic cotton
content claims, and do not address other inputs, or the
social and environmental impacts of processing. New
versions of the OE standards are being developed. They
will be applicable to all organically grown fibers.
Oeko-Tex® Standard (1000 / 100plus)
The Oeko-Tex® Standard 1000 certifies production facilities
along the entire supply chain in terms of environmentally
and socially responsible production conditions. The OekoTex® Standard 100plus combines the Oeko-Tex® Standard
100 – which designates human-ecology safe textile products that have been tested for harmful substances – and
the standard 1000.

PEFC™
Das ‚Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification’ (Programm zur Anerkennung von Waldzertifizierungen), ist ein unabhängiges Zertifizierungssystem. Holz und
Holzprodukte mit dem PEFC-Siegel stammen nachweislich
aus ökologisch, ökonomisch und sozial nachhaltiger Forstwirtschaft. Die Zertifizierung der Produktkette („Chainof-Custody“) ermöglicht es, den Holzfluss im gesamten
Produktionsprozess vom zertifizierten Waldbestand zum
fertigen Produkt nachzuvollziehen. PEFC als Dachorganisation definiert Anforderungen für Forstzertifizierungssysteme und Standards, die auf nationaler Ebene erfüllt sein
müssen und das jeweilige lokale Bedürfnis, Interesse und
Engagement berücksichtigen müssen, um von PEFC anerkannt zu werden.
Rugmark®
Rugmark India zertifiziert handgeknüpfte Teppiche, die
nach internationalen Sozialstandards hergestellt werden.
Im Vordergrund steht der Ausschluss illegaler Kinderarbeit. Zusätzlich wird ehemaligen Kinderarbeitern sowie
Kindern von armen Teppichknüpfern der Zugang zu Bildung,
Rehabilitationsmaßnahmen und medizinischer Versorgung
ermöglicht. Rugmark arbeitet mit einem ‚track and trace’System.
SA8000®
wurde von SAI etabliert und ist einer der am meisten
angewandten Sozialstandards. Er hilft, internationale
Arbeitsstandards zum Schutz von Arbeitern entlang
der gesamten Lieferkette zu implementieren.

PEFC™
The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification
is an independent certification system. Wood and wood
products with the PEFC-Label are verifiably from ecologically, economically and socially sustainable forestry.
The Chain-of-Custody certification enables tracking of
the entire production process from the certified forest
stand to the final product. PEFC as umbrella organisation
defines requirements for forest certification systems
and standards. These must be fulfilled on the national
level and must respond to local demand, interest and
commitment in order to be recognised by PEFC.
Rugmark®
Rugmark India certifies handmade carpets in accordance
with international standards of social responsibility. The
major aim is the elimination of illegal child labour. Additionally children removed from carpet weaving as well as
children of poor carpet weavers get access to education,
rehabilitation and healthcare. Rugmark works with a track
and trace system.
SA8000®
was established by SAI and is one of the most commonly
applied social standards worldwide. It is a tool for implementing international labor standards to protect workers
along each step of the supply chain.

There are lots of certificates around that document corporate
commitment to sustainability. The identification system in
the Green Directory guarantees a clear orientation. A quick
glance at the eco leaves in the directory will tell you about
the main areas of focus of each supplier’s sustainability
portfolio. *
Green leaf
Umweltfreundliche Materialien sind zum
