Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an
FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity
and improve quality of life for many people with multiple
sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend
that people with MS talk with their health care professional

strategies and effective treatments to manage

We Can.
This year in our annual report, we proudly showcase the achievements
of our dedicated and generous staff, volunteers, clients and donors
in the spirit of a new theme, “We can, We will, Now.” This new
theme is emblematic of our organization’s commitment to build upon
its legacy of world-class programming and creative fund-raising with
an overwhelming passion to discover better treatments and a cure
for this unpredictable and devastating disease.
In this report we celebrate the achievements of 2005. Achievements
built on the courage of over 8,000 individuals and their families living
with MS and their families across 42 counties in Upstate New York.
We applaud the aspirations of volunteers and donors like you
who have embraced our mission and life’s work to rid the world
of this disease.

committee member, has raised more than $10,000 over
the years. Diagnosed with MS in 1998, Frank is currently
a Team Captain in the North Country MS Bike Tour.

Promise 2010
Promise 2010 is the first national fundraising campaign, focused on
four targeted areas of research. With a nationwide goal of $25 million,
over a five-year period, each Chapter’s commitment is critical to its
success. The Upstate New York Chapter remains on the forefont of
research progress with a commitment to this campaign of $250,000.
Promise 2010’s four targeted areas of research to be studied are:

Promising Care and treatment: MS Pediatric Care Centers
Promising Understanding: Sonya Slifka Longitudinal Study
Promising Research: MS Lesions Project

Humanitarian Award

the recipient of the Katharine M.
Donohoe Humanitarian Award for
her dedication and achievements
in the fight against MS.
Angel Award
Timothy R. McCormick, Rochester’s
longest-serving health system administrator
is President and CEO of Unity Health
System. Together with outgoing Chapter
President Jim Ahearn, Mr. McCormick led
the charge to found the MS Achievement
Center (MSAC), a collaboration between
Park Ridge Health System and the Upstate
New York Chapter. It is one of only two
adult day health programs for people
living with MS in the US.
The North Country MS Bike Tour’s leading team was the Rustic
Riders, led by Klaus Meissner. The team raised $8,868.
Lifetime
Achievement Award
Ashley Peacock was the top overall fundraiser for the North
Country MS Bike tour raising $4,900. She also raised
$3,975 for the Borg Imaging Finger Lakes MS Bike Tour.

Christine Kuehner, shown with her family, was the
Top Chapter-wide individual MS Walk participant, raising
$15,541 for the cause!
Walt’s Walkers, who walked at the Greece MS Walk
location, raised $19,425 finishing #1 in the state.
Team MS Miles for Mariann, led by Carolyn Argust,
was the Top Bike Team at the Borg Imaging Finger Lakes
MS Bike Tour raising $22,180.
Warren Wetzelberg was the top fundraiser at the Borg
Imaging Finger Lakes MS Bike Tour raising $5,120
Distinguished Service Award
Angel Award
Ellie Kittle-Ingalsbe and Kathy Lanni, owners
of REGALO A Gift Experience were honored for
their 12 years of volunteer service and fundraising
efforts. Involvement includes Ellie’s 11 years on
the Board of Directors, and various committees,
and REGALO’s participation in the MS Walk,
Bike Tour and Dinner of Champions.

Dr. Daniel J. Silverman, Medical Director at the Center for Disability
Services (center), was honored for his hard work and dedication
to the mission including his implementation of the MS Care Center,
where people with MS have access to medical care, rehabilitative
services and wellness programs all in one location. The MS Care
Center, located in the Center for Disability Services, is the only
comprehensive program of its kind in the Capital Region. Dan has also
worked on collaborations such as the Multiple Sclerosis Symposium,
a day-long program consisting of guest speakers providing a variety
of educational sessions and informational booths for people with MS.
