… do the “Baltic States” exits? As
a fact there are three relatively small states
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia on the Eastern
shore of the Baltic Sea. They share a common history as part of the Russian Empire
and the Soviet Union. But nowadays they
seem to emphatise more the the differences in lanuages and cultures than the
commons... Here some objective facts:

Climate & Geography
All the three states together are bigger than Florida or Greece, the largest
- Lithuania - bigger than Maryland or
slightly smaller than Ireland. I think
the error is to conclude from the low
number of inhabitants: Estonia 1,3
Mio, Lithuania 3,4 Mio. that they are
small countries - specially in comparison to the big neighbours Russia
and Poland... [Nature] Take the
question “East or West” literally: In
the West we there is the flat Baltic
Sea coast and the Island. only in
Estonia there are steep coasts,
in the East you find a hilly land
with forests rivers and lakes.
[Weather] Cycling season is
May to September, beyond there
might be snow(!). As in most of
Europe the weather depends
on the question whether we get
rain from the Atlantics or dry air
from Sibiria. I am convinced,
that most of the rain stays
in the United Kingdom and
the Netherlands and doesn’t
even get here.
[Roads]
The conditions are still far away from perfection. “Real” separate, asphalt paved bicycle
paths are seldom, in Estonia there is a
network of fully marked cycle routes,
thus they are mostly on mixed traffic roads.

And that’s exactly what the BaltiCCycle
Maps and route descriptions are doing!
Gibt es so etwas wie die “Baltischen
Staaten”, das “Baltikum”?
..oder sind Litauen, Lettland und Estland
doch “zu verschieden”? Nun gut, sie haben
die Geschichte als Teil der Sowjetunion
und des russischen Zarenreiches gemeinsam, aber heute betonen sie doch lieber
ihre Eigenheiten: Jedes Land hat eine
eigene Sprache - Litauisch und Lettisch
sind verwandt, Estnisch ähnelt entfernt dem
Finnischen – wenn die “Balten” nicht gerade
Russisch oder Englisch reden, dann verstehen sie sich nicht . Estland hat über Tausend
Inseln, während Litauen gerade mal 90 km
Ostseeküste besitzt. Und wenn man ehrlich
ist, dann vergleichen sich Esten, Letten und
Litauer gerne untereinander: Wie weit ist man
auf seinem unterschiedlichen Weg nach dem
Ende der Sowjetunion gekommen?
von Estland ist flach und laaangathmig. Die
höchsten “Berge” sind unter 400 m hoch.
Und die Frage “Ost oder West” kann man
wörtlich nehmen: Während im Westen die
zumeist flache Küste liegt (in Estland gibt
es oft Steilküsten), erstreckt sich im Osten
ein hügeliges Band aus Wäldern, Seen und
Flüssen
... klein?
Litauen allein ist etwas kleiner als Österreich
(aber größer als Bayern) - allerdings leben in
Litauen nur 3,5 Mio. Menschen, Estland ist
größer als die Niederlande oder Dänemark.
Nur leben in den Niederlanden 15 Millionen
Menschen und in Estand 1,3 Millionen...

partly built separate bicycle paths or are are marked.
Still, there are inconvenient parts – they make up to less
then 20% of the route
Remark: If you join an organised, guided bus+cycle tour
you “skip” the uncomfortable parts

Das ist natürlich noch lang nicht alles... Fragen kostet nix ;-) Kann man im “Baltikum” Fahrrad fahren?
Also, “perfekt” ist es nicht, richtige Radwege
sind immer noch eine Seltenheit. In Estland
gibt es ein ausgeschildertes Netz von
Radrouten, meistens auf ganz normalen,
wenig befahrenen Straßen.
Es gibt immer noch viele Schotter-Rüttel-Pisten (Spitzname: “Waschbrett”); auf
Detaillkarten sind sie gut sichtbar in gelber
Farbe markiert. Richtig unangenehm ist
der der Verkehr auf den Hauptstraßen (mit
“A” oder “E”- Nummern) und um die großen
Städte, von denen es glücklicherweise nicht
viele gibt. Und schließlich ist das Fahrverhalten der Auto- und LKW-Fahrer nicht
immer freundlich ...
