June Solstice explained
The June solstice is known as the
summer solstice in the northern
hemisphere and the winter solstice
the southern hemisphere. The date
varies between June 20 and June 22,
depending on the year. The June
solstice occurs when the sun is at its
furthest point from the equator. It is
also known as the northern solstice
because it occurs when the sun is
directly over the Tropic of Cancer in
the northern hemisphere. The June
solstice day has the longest hours of daylight for those living north of the equator.
Those living or travelling to the north of the Arctic Circle are able to see the
“midnight sun”, where the sun remains visible throughout the night, while those
living or travelling south of the Antarctic Circle will not see sun during this time of
the year.

Rhetorical Questions


If people from Poland are called Poles, why aren’t people from
Holland called Holes?
Why is the person who invests all your money called a broker?
Why do overlook and oversee mean the opposite?
If it’s true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the
others here for?
Why does the sun lighten our hair but darken our skin?
If an orange is orange, why isn’t a lime called a green and a lemon
called a yellow?
If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn’t it follow
that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys
deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked and dry cleaners
depressed?

card games but also a little
traditional snack which
they often bring along to
share with the other card

Groups and Communities
The German Choir is very well known in the South-East corner of Tasmania
where they do public performances. The Choir would welcome more people
who love singing German and Australian songs. Practice is every Monday at

Skat Players: The Skat Players meet every Friday at 18:00 and Sundays at

simply enjoy the card game. The games cater for all players. If you are
interested, please contact the Club during opening hours.
Canasta Players: The Canasta Players love a good game of cards with lots of
social interaction. They meet on Thursdays at 15.30 at the Club. Please

PAST AND PRESENT NEWS
Hobart German Choir Tour North-West Coast of Tasmania 4-7 March 2013.
The choir left Hobart very early by bus with Joachim Fenger was our bus driver.
Arnold Saulis travelled with us as our photographer as well as our very talented
pianist Maryanne Johnson. We made our base in Burnie and from there we visited
Nursing Homes in Wynyard, Somerset, Burnie, Ulverstone, Penguin and Longford
on the way home. The appreciation from the Age Care Homes was incredible; the
concerts were extremely well received, We were fortunate to have Fritz Harmsen
with us who played the Alpenhorn beautifully together with our conductor Rene
Rime who played the Accordion. Wolfgang Muench played the guitar and Helmut
Klein entertained with the mouth organ.
Overall, the Choir had a wonderful time together and will bring away many happy
memories of their time together.
(report by Renate Gehlaar)
The Committee has requested that members are reminded of the regulations and
legal requirements regarding smoke-free areas. Smoking in all enclosed public
places including bars, restaurants and toilets is not permitted. Smoking at the front
door of the Club is not permitted and there is a designated smoking area at the
“back” door of the Club, as well as on the deck. Members are reminded though
that they must not smoke within 3 metres of an entrance or exit to a non-domestic
building. The cooperation of all members who are smokers is appreciated in this
matter.
