Number 1 Winter holidays: How to entertain the kids when it’s raining Do you need inspiration for rainy days? Avoid the crowds at London’s most popular attractions and discover one of these fun alternatives. The Horniman Museum and Gardens Avoid the long queues at the Natural History Museum and head for the Horniman Museum and Gardens instead. Among the peculiar collections of exhibits you’ll find preserved octopuses, Romanian folk art and a large aquarium. From 13 February to 30 October there’s even a dinosaur exhibition, so the kids can still get up close with a variety of prehistoric creatures. Pollock’s Toy Museum Check out Pollock’s Toy Museum. Amongst the rocking horses and train sets they have a toy clay mouse that was made in Egypt over 4000 years ago. Hackney City Farm Get stuck in with some farmyard fun at Hackney City Farm, where you will come face to face with pigs, sheep and ducks. RESCUING LEO THE SNOW LEOPARD How an orphaned cub found loving care from people across the globe In 2005, in the steep mountains of Pakistan, a passing herder noticed a tiny snow leopard cub, helpless and alone on the mountainside. The cub’s mother was gone, probably killed by a hunter. The man decided to take the orphan home and raise it. But after a week, the herder realized the snow leopard baby wasn’t healthy and that he didn’t know how to feed it. The World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P) heard about the cub and sent an employee to the herder’s remote village. The situation was urgent; snow leopards are an endangered species. The wild cats are not only hunted for their beautiful, thick coats, but they have also lost much of their natural prey, such as wild mountain goats and sheep, to the hunters. That has forced the normally shy cats to hunt livestock, which can get them shot by angry herders. The world population of snow leopards in their natural range—high mountains in Central Asia—has dropped to between 3,500 and 7,500. In Pakistan only about 200 to 420 are left. The people at the WWF-P didn’t want to lose another. Without its mother, the cub wouldn’t be able to learn survival skills like hunting and could never be released back into the wild. So, after a veterinary check-up, the young cat was sent to a national park. The cub was placed in the care of Kamal-ud-din, a wildlife keeper who often raised wild baby animals. Kamal named the cub Leo, because if you growl ‘leo’ repeatedly, it sounds similar to a mother snow leopard’s call to its young. Seite 6 Musterprüfung Englisch B Nummer:... As Leo grew, it became clear that he needed a new, long-term home. This time, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) came to Leo’s rescue. The organization sent a team that brought Leo from Pakistan to the Bronx Zoo, a facility that WCS operates in New York City. Leo quickly warmed up to his new home with the help of his new keepers. In 2013, Leo’s first baby was born at the Bronx Zoo. “Leo – and his new cub – are living proof of the importance, power, and significance of saving wildlife,” says WCS Asia Program deputy director Peter Zahler. “Leo has helped bring people together from around the world in an effort to save this iconic animal, and WCS is committed to working with our partners in Pakistan to help save snow leopards in the wild.” (Source: National Geographic Kids magazine) a) Order the events in the sequence in which they happened. An example has been done for you. Event Example: A herdsman in Pakistan saw a very young snow leopard. Number 1 The young animal was taken to a national park in Pakistan. Because he grew bigger, Leo was brought to a zoo in New York The herder took the lonely snow leopard baby home. Leo became the father of a young snow leopard. The WWF in Pakistan came to help the man who had found the cub. In the future, the WCS will try to save more snow leopards. The wildlife keeper Kamal gave a name to the snow leopard. Seite 15 Musterprüfung Englisch B Nummer:... Script Part 2 October 31st is Halloween. On that night, children around the United States will wear special clothing and make up their faces to look like frightening creatures. These little vampires, ghosts and witches will walk around their neighborhoods, knocking on doors and yelling “trick or treat.” If the people in the homes do not give them a sweet treat, candy, the children may play a trick on them. Many homes are also dressed up for Halloween. People hang toy spiders, skeletons and other scary decorations on trees and bushes. Pumpkins are also popular. People often empty the pumpkins and carve frightening faces on them. Then they place a candle inside so the pumpkin face glows in the night. Halloween traditions developed from Celtic beliefs in ancient Britain. The Celts believed that spirits of the dead would return to their homes on October 31st, the day of the autumn feast. Celts would build huge fires to frighten away evil spirits released with the dead on that night. People from Scotland and Ireland brought these ideas with them when they came to America. Some believed that spirits played tricks on people on the last night of October. Today, Halloween is a favorite holiday among children. But Halloween is also big business. The National Retail Federation has reported predictions about Halloween spending for the last 11 years. It says, this year, it expects Halloween sales to total about $7.4 billion. The National Retail Federation says the average person will spend more than $77 on Halloween goods. And, the NRF says more Americans plan to take part in Halloween activities than last year. The group expects 162 million people to celebrate compared to 158 million people in 2013. Humans will not be the only costumed creatures Halloween night. The National Retail Federation says about 23 million people plan to dress up their animals. The top two popular pet costumes are pumpkins and hot dogs. Happy Halloween!
