Independence LIVE was specially designed for the use of Independence 2 during live performances „on stage“. The user interface layout (dark background colors and light font colors) of Independence Live is extremely useful for the typical environment on rather dark stages. You can load an unlimited number of Independence Projects and thus even 3rd party VST effects & VST instruments into the „project channel“ part of an Independence Live session and simply switch between these Projects in real-time - with the „program change“ option even without using your computer keyboard or mouse! Additionally you can edit your Independence Projects even directly in Independence Live at any time: With the “edit project” button you can open Independence 2 in a separate window so you can immediately adjust and edit your instruments. As soon as you select another Project in Independence Live also the Independence 2 will change automatically and shows the instruments for the selected Independence Live Project. yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 7 Manual You can save and load everything you created with only one click and switch between the Projects in Independence Live in real-time without any additional loading time. The „remote control“ feature of Independence Live lets you use any hardware controller with the 8 freely assignable knobs and buttons. To make your setup as easy and fast as possible you can use the „learn“ option for the knobs and buttons. Beside that general assignment of parameters to the remote control knobs and buttons you can additionally set a minimum and maximum automation value for each parameter you assigned to a knob. This means that you can use the full range (0% to 100%) of the remote control knob only for a specified value range of the assigned parameter. You can even use the remote control buttons to create a start note that triggers one of the MIDI modules of Independence, like Arranger, Step Sequencer, Arpeggiator, etc. - so you can simply start and stop these modules the easiest way possible. You can use your sustain pedal, for example, to start or stop the playback of a Step Sequencer! Additionally - to keep the overview - you can select up to 8 different colors for the knobs and buttons. This way you can create groups of parameters that belong together which is very useful especially during live performances! For immediate access to your automation settings you can save everything in so called „automation templates“ and assign these templates to any other Project at any time. The bottom part of Independence Live shows the currently loaded Projects of your Session. Each Project is displayed as a „Project Channel“ with its number, name, volume settings and sync status. The color of the currently selected Projects switches into „orange“. At the same time you select a Project, all parameters and settings immediately get displayed in the Project display above. Independence Live lets you assign one general tempo for all currently loaded Projects or also to use the custom tempo settings of each Independence Project individually. 8 CHAPTER 2 Basics & User Interface Basics & User Interface First start of Independence Live During the first start of Independence Live you get prompted to select the Independence Pro Root Folder: This folder contains all Projects, Layer Sets, Layers, presets, audio and MIDI files and the documentation. You can change the location of your Independence Pro Root Folder at any time afterwards and you can also change the Root Folder you want to use with Independence Live - if you have multiple Independence Pro Root Folders installed. Please browser through your hard disk(s) and select your Independence Pro Root Folder. In the “Independence Live” menu you can open the Audio and MIDI preferences at any time. The “Help” menu includes the entire PDF documentation and online links. yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 9 Manual Independence Live Preferences Audio Preferences Independence Live recognizes all available audio interfaces, their I/O buffer sizes and sample rates: After the selection of your preferred audio interface we recommend you to set the I/O buffer size to a minimum of 512 frames. Maybe some more details about this parameter: The I/O buffer size is the buffer of your audio interface. This buffer allows you a smooth and uninterrupted performance. On the other hand you have to keep in mind, that the higher you will set this value, the more latency will be the result. This means that you have to find the best balance between required performance and acceptable latency. The sample rate offers the resolution that are supported by your audio interface. MIDI Preferences Independence Live can manage up to 32 MIDI ports (up to 512 MIDI channels simultaneously!). Independence Live recognizes all available physical and virtual MIDI ports automatically. Simply click on the pull-down menus to select the MIDI ports you want to use with Independence Live. Use the check boxes beside the ports to activate or deactivate the corresponding MIDI ports. Please keep in mind that you have to assign one MIDI-in port at minimum otherwise Independence Live will not get any MIDI input. 10 CHAPTER 2 Basics & User Interface User Interface The user interface of Independence Live is divided into four different areas: 1 2 4 3 1: Session Details: With the Session pull-down menu you can load and save Independence Live Sessions. Each Session has its own “volume”, “tempo” and “meter” settings and can contain an unlimited number of Projects. 2: Project Details: Each Independence Live Project corresponds to one Independence 2 Project. The Project display shows the settings of the currently selected Projects, such as its name, volume and sync setings. Here you can also load and save automation templates. 3: Project List: Here you can load an unlimited number of Projetcs. The currently selected Projects gets bordered in orange. 4: Custom Control: This part lets you customize your setup the most flexible way possible: You can assign any Independence 2 parameter directly to a custom remote knob or button of Independence Live. Activating the powerful host and MIDI automation options for the custom control lets you use any external hardware controller with Independence Live. yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 11 Manual Session Details An Independence Live Session contains ALL settings of the integrated Projects. So any changes of the available parameters in this area will finally affect all Projects you loaded. The “Session” pull-down menu lets you load and save your Sessions: With a click on the „add project“ button you add a new Project to into the Projects List. You can also add a new Project with a double-click in the Project List area. A new Project always contains the „autoload“ file of Independence 2. On default the „autoload“ file contains a sinus tone, but you can also create your own autoload file at any time. “edit project“ opens Independence 2 in a separate window and automatically shows the instruments of the currently selected Project. If you edit an empty Project, Independence 2 will open without any instruments/sounds loaded. To remove a Project from your Independence Live Session, select the Project and click the „remove project“ button afterwards. You can switch between the available Projects in Independence Live with your mouse - or use the „program change“ option to generally activate or deactivate the „program change“ feature for Independence Live. If activated you can use your external MIDI controller to switch between the loaded Projects. Even if deactivated there is still the „program change“ feature of Independence 2 working. You can switch off this option on the Independence 2 „preferences“ page. If Independence Live should not work correctly during your work, you can use the „bypass midi“ button. It is like a „MIDI panic“ option to mute and reset all note-on MIDI signals immediately. IMPORTANT: ALL Session parameters affect the entire Independence Live instance! The volume value assign the general volume for the entire Session. The “tempo” parameter of Independence Live automatically applies to all Projects. You can also set a custom sync/tempo to each Project separately. Depending on your songs you can change the meter settings for your Independence Live Session accordingly. 12 CHAPTER 2 Basics & User Interface Project Details The Project Display shows the settings and options of the currently selected Independence 2 Project: Below the Project name there is the MIDI in signal and the levelmeter of the Project. Click on the Project pull-down menu to load a Project: You can assign a custom volume level to the Project with the parameter value field or the volume knob. Use the „automation templates“ menu to load or save your entire automation setups. This way you can assign your templates to any other Independence Project at any time. Independence Live already includes the automation presets for hardware controllers of many major manufacturers, such as M-Audio, Tascam, CME, Korg, etc. yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 13 Manual As already mentioned before, Independence Live has its own tempo but also allows individual tempo settings for each Project. On default a new Project is always synced to the Independence Live tempo: If the „sync“ button is activated the color changes into “orange” and the tempo value gets displayed: As soon as you enter a different tempo value for a Project, the Project will not longer use the Independence Live tempo: You can also change the tempo of a Project in Independence 2 (when editing the Project) and Independence Live will automatically transfer the new value. 14 CHAPTER 2 Basics & User Interface Project List The bottom part of Independence Live contains the loaded Projects of your Session: Each Project is displayed as a „Project Channel“ with its number, name, volume settings and sync status. The color of the currently selected Project switches into „orange“. At the same time you select a Project, all parameters and settings immediately get displayed in the Project Details display above - and Independence 2 when opened. To load or save a Project simply click on the Project name to open the pull-down menu. You can change the order of the available Projects with drag’n’drop. Click and hold the number of the Project you want to move and drag it to the desired position. During this process a yellow line shows the new position. In the example below we want to put the Project “Taikos - Song 3” at the end of the list: yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 15 Manual To finish the process simply release the mouse button and you can see that the Taikos Project is now at the end of list and the numbers of the Projects changed accordingly: Custom Control This part of Independence Live lets you customize your setup in an incredibly flexible way. You can assign any Independence 2 parameter directly to a custom remote knob or button of Independence Live. There is also a „host learn“ option for any Independence 2 parameter, so you just have to select this option for the parameter you want to assign to one of the custom control knobs or buttons. To finish the assignment you only have to click on the knob or button you want to use for the manipulation of the selected parameter. Beside that general assignment of parameters to the remote control knobs and buttons you can additionally set a minimum and maximum automation value for each parameter you assigned to a knob. This means that you can use the full range (0% to 100%) of your MIDI controler only for a specified value range of the assigned parameter. You can even use the remote control buttons to create a start note that triggers one of the MIDI modules of Independence 2, like Arranger, Step Sequencer, Arpeggiator, etc. - so you can simply start and stop these modules the easiest way possible. You can use your sustain pedal, for example, to start or stop the playback of a MIDI player! Additionally - to keep the overview - you can select up to 8 different colors for the knobs and buttons. This way you can create groups of parameters that belong together which is very useful especially during live performances! Activating the powerful host and MIDI automation options for the custom remote control, you can even use any external hardware controller with Independence Live. We will explain the setup of an automation and the use of the Custom Control features later in this manual very detailed. 16 CHAPTER 3 Automation Setup & Custom Control Automation Setup & Custom Control Automation Setup You can assign any Independence 2 parameter directly to a custom remote knob or button of Independence Live. There is also a „host learn“ option for any Independence 2 parameter, so you just have to select this option for the parameter you want to assign to one of the custom control knobs or buttons. To finish the assignment you only have to click on the knob or button you want to use for the manipulation of the selected parameter. IMPORTANT: Of course you can also use any MIDI automation from any Independence 2.0 parameter directly. You do not have to connect Independence 2.0 with Independence Live first. To create the automation for an Independence 2 parameter you have to click on the „edit project“ button in Independence Live. Now the the Independence 2 Project comes up in a separate window. yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 17 Manual In our example we want to assign the “dry/wet” parameter of the reverb we use for the loaded acoustic piano instrument to a knob of the Independence Live Custom Control area. As usual click with the right mouse button on the parameter value to open the automation menu. Since Independence Live is a host application for Independence 2, please select the “host learn” option. You can see that the parameter value display immediately switches to the “learn” status. This status remains activated until you click on the knob in Independence Live. 18 CHAPTER 3 Automation Setup & Custom Control Now switch to the Independence Live user interface and click on the knob you want to use for the manipulation of the reverb “dry/wet” parameter - that’s it. For a better overview you can now enter the name of the automated parameter for the Custom Control knob - in our example “Reverb Dry/Wet”. yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 19 Manual Custom Control The Custom Control feature and the powerful host and MIDI automation of Independence Live enable you to use the Independence 2 instruments and even 3rd party VST Instruments with a maximum level of flexibility and customization to your needs. The Custom Control area contains 8 freely assignable knobs and 8 freely assignable buttons. You can assign any Independence 2 parameter directly to a custom remote knob or button of Independence Live. This way you can easily control your preferred parameters of your Independence 2 Project directly in Independence Live. As soon as you switch between the Projects in Independence Live, also the Control Control knobs and faders will switch accordingly to the settings of the selected Project. Additionally you can use any external MIDI controller to control the knobs and/or the buttons at will. Let’s take a look to the functionality and the setup of the Custom Control feature: Custom Remote Knobs After you assigned a parameter from Independence 2 to Independence Live (see “automation setup”) you can open the options menu for the knob you want to use/edit with 20 CHAPTER 3 Automation Setup & Custom Control the right mouse button. To assign a MIDI controller number to this knob you can now a) use the “midi learn” option. Now the status “learn” is shown as long as you move the knob or fader of your MIDI controller you want to connect with the selected Custom Control knob: b) use the manual assignment of the MIDI controller number. Simply select the number of the MIDI controller you want to use with the Custom Control knob - that’s it. yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 21 Manual As soon as you activated the automation of an Independence 2 parameter for a knob you can additionally assign an “automation minimum value” and an “automation maximum value”. This means that you can use the full range (0% to 100%) of your MIDI controller knob or fader only for a specified value range of the assigned Independence 2 parameter. The first step is the assignment of the minimum value: Set the knob to the value you want to use as minimum (40%, for example) and select “set automation minimum value” in the pull-down menu afterwards: Now set the knob to your preferred maximum value and select “set automation maximum value” (75%, for example) in the pull-down menu: 22 CHAPTER 3 Automation Setup & Custom Control Now you can use the knob/fader of the MIDI controller you assigned with its full range (from “0%” to “100%”) but the parameter value will only change in the assigned range between “40%” to “75%”. Thus the 40% of the paramter value correspond to the 0% of the MIDI controller - and the 75% of the parameter correspond to the 100% of the MIDI controller accordingly. To edit the minimum and maximum values you can “recall” both values at any time and change them at will. To save your changes you have to click on the “set automation minimum/maximum value” option again. To reset your entire automation range assignment simply click on the “reset automation range” option in the pulldown menu: To keep the overview you can enter a custom name and select up to 8 different colors for the knobs and buttons. This way you can create groups of parameters that belong together which is very useful especially during live performances! yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 23 Manual Custom Remote Buttons Generally the 8 buttons of the Custom Control area work just as the knobs we explained before. To assign a remote button to your external MIDI controller you can also use the “midi learn” option. Now the status “learn” is shown as long as you move the knob, fader or button of your MIDI controller you want to connect with the selected Custom Control button. 24 CHAPTER 3 Automation Setup & Custom Control You can also select the MIDI controller number manually: As soon as you assign a MIDI controller number to a button, a capital “A” gets displayed on the button to show that an automation is activated. yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 25 Manual You can even use the Custom Control buttons to create a start note that triggers one of the MIDI modules of Independence 2, like Arranger, Step Sequencer, Arpeggiator, etc. - so you can simply start and stop these modules the easiest way possible. You can use your sustain pedal, for example, to start or stop the playback of an Arranger! To assign a start note to a button you can select the “learn” option and press the note on your keyboard afterwards or you can assign the start note manually: To enter a custom name for the button you have to click on the name to place the cursor. Now enter the name and press the “enter” key to save the new name. 26 CHAPTER 4 Working with Independence Live Working with Independence Live On default Independence Live opens with one Project that contains the setup of the “autoload” file of Independence 2. You can create your own “autoload” file in Independence 2. This way any new Project will contain your preferred setup. You can also create your own custom Session in Independence Live and replace the “autoload.ytis” Session file. Independence Live will then open with your custom settings on default. All parameters and the user interface of Independence Live habe been explained before, so we now want to put the focus more on the workflow. Generally Independence Live can open any Independence 2 Project, so you can immediately load your instruments into the empty Projects. If you get started without an existing Project or you want to create a totally new setup, here is how it works. At the beginning you have to click on the “edit project” button to open Independence 2 in a separate window. yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 27 Manual Independence 2 will open without any instruments loaded... ... so we first have to load an instrument - let’s take an acoustic piano: 28 CHAPTER 4 Working with Independence Live After the instrument was loaded successfully we now can save everything as an Independence Project - to make it ready for Independence Live. Of course you can also load further instruments and assign any insert filter or effects, modifiers, etc. We will now save the Project with the name “Piano - Song 1” in the “projects” folder of our Independence Pro Root Folder: yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 29 Manual You can see in the backround that Independence Live automatically updated the Project name accordingly. We now want to save the current setup also as an Independence Live Session, so let’s switch back to Independence Live (simply click on its user interface) and select “save as...” in the Session pull-down menu: 30 CHAPTER 4 Working with Independence Live The browser of your OS comes up and you can now enter the name for your Session - in our example we enter “My First Live Session”. Sessions have to get saved into the “sessions” folder inside your “Independence Pro Root Folder”. Now the new name of your Session appears in the Session display. Independence Live can manage an unlimited number of Projects. So let’s add two more empty Projects - you can use the “add project button” or double-click in the Project List area - and select Project 2 afterwards. yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 31 Manual You can see that Independence 2 automatically switches to the new Project accordingly: Let’s load some Taiko Drums of the Independence Groove Instruments for Project 2. 32 CHAPTER 4 Working with Independence Live After the Taikos are loaded you can save the current setup as Project again. Do the same for Project 3 - we loaded a Brass Section - and switch back to Independence Live. Now your Project List looks like this: yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 33 Manual You can change the order of the available Projects with drag’n’drop. Click and hold the number of the Project you want to move and drag it to the desired position. During this process a yellow line shows the new position: To finish the process simply release the mouse button: Beside the general Independence Live tempo you can also use individual tempo settings for each Project. Click on the “SYNC” button and enter a new tempo value: 34 CHAPTER 5 Credits Credits Idea and conception: Drazen Vlahovic Productdesign and projectmanagement: Christian Hellinger Senior software developer: Roman Glomb User interface: yt art division Graphic design, art direction, packaging designs: Hedgehog advertising agency, Germany Packaging and production: Optime Service, Germany Special Thanks To: Slavica, Enna and Adrian Vlahovic for their limitless patience, Gabriele Hellinger just for everything, Roman Glomb for his 36 hours days, Rita Schaupp, Rolf and Ariane Hellinger, Adelheid Nehring von Oettingen for their support, Michael Lips from Gravis Shop Karlsruhe, Rudi Metzler and RockShop Karlsruhe for the support, Manfred Graf, Reinhold Rausch, KUK GmbH, WIBU Systems AG, Wolfgang Völker, Patrick Kirst, Zlatko Dozic, Torsten Wieseler, Marcel Millot, Umbo, Martin Straka, Matthias & Markus Loris, Frank Lemmert, Christian Auer, Casi, Pedro Weis, the companies Apple, Emagic, Digidesign, Entel, Shirokuma and Chicken Systems, all yellow tools beta-testers and all our worldwide resellers and distribution partners. yellow tools INDEPENDENCE LIVE 2.0 35 Manual License Agreement License Agreement Software PLEASE READ THIS LICENSE CAREFULLY BEFORE USING THE SOFTWARE.
