"a:tolls," a s defined a t t h e Coral A t o l l Symposium, held i n Honolulu, T.H.,
i n February 1951. ---.
Included a r e non-elevated limestone s t r u c t u r e s with dry
land, with o r without a lagoon, and n o t associated olosely with high land.
Excluded a r e elevated a t o l l s ( h e i g h t more than about 2 5 f e e t above the s e a ) ,

This l i s t i s believed t o contain most of t h e r e e f s t r u c t u r e s vhich
qualify a s " a t o l l s w i n P c l p e s i a an6 Micronesia. The compiler i s ' l e s s famili.er vnth t h e r e e f s of other regions, and it i s n o t u n l i k e l y t h a t some
" a t o l l s " have been overlooked. Auditions and corrections a r e desired, and
your help i s s o l i c i t e d t o make a f u t u r e e d i t i o n cf t h i s l i s t a s complete a s

l i s t by means of l e t t e r s and numbers. The l e t t e r s r e f e r t o l o g i c a l , convenient, or e s t a b l i s h e d areas; t h e numbers t o i s l a n d s within t h e %reas, i n
soae d e f i n i t e sequence.
Under "notes", b r i e f reference i s ma.de t o such items of i n t o r e s t a s
elevations, number of i s l e t s , and t h e l i k e ; p a r t i c u l a r l y those which might
i n d i c a t e t h a t t h e r e e f i s n o t - a t$pical a t o l l . I n the' l a s t column, r e f e r ence i s given t o a c h a r t which shows t h e a t o l l o r i t s location. Most of t h e
numbers r e f e r t o U. S. Rydrographic Office charts.
About 400
a r e l i s t e d . Of these, 136 a r e i n Polynesia, 92
i n Nicronesia, 65 i n hielanesia, 1 5 i n Indonesia, 5 northwest of A u s t r a l i a ,
68 i n the r e s t of the Indian Ooean, 26 i n the Caribbean Sea, and only one
i n t h e Atlantic. The g r e a t e s t number i n any p o l i t i c a l subdivision i s t h e
75 i n the Tuamotu Archipelago; however, across &he c e n t r a l P a c i f i o and
crowding close upon t h e
out through Nucronesia t h e r e a r e 136, one

regarding t h e exact s t a t u s of reef s t r u c t u r e s i n various groups, such a s
