Central Dalmatia
Central Dalmatia represents the area from the Kornati region with its
numerous small islands and islets to the area of the large islands: Veliki
Drvenik and Mali Drvenik, Čiovo, Šolta, Brač, Hvar, the Pakleni islands, Vis,
Biševo, Svetac, Brusnik and the distant Palagruža with its accompanying
Split
archipelagos of smaller islands. Channels lying east–west lie between
the individual large islands and the mainland and these islands and the
neighbouring islands. The outer belt of these Adriatic islands is abundant
with attractive diving locations where water clarity can oftentimes exceed 25 metres in the hot summer months. This is
the area of the narrowest point of the Adriatic between Croatia and Italy and, as a suitable transport zone, is an eternally
unresearched zone, rich in traces of human history. Despite numerous known submarine archaeological sites in the
Central Dalmatia area, there are still traces and information of many other undiscovered shipwrecks dating back to
maritime war combat. On the western side of the island of Vis, the geological specificities of the volcanic islands from
Brusnik to Jabuka still to this day represent undiscovered unattractive dive sites. The volcanic offshore zone of this part
of the Adriatic is an inexhaustible research zone for marine biologists. Therefore, the zone of Central Dalmatia is a true
pleasure for divers who love the most diverse forms of diving: wreck diving, reef diving, wall diving and cave diving.
Das Mittlere Dalmatien
Das Mittlere Dalmatien ist ein Gebiet des Übergangs von den vielen kleinen Inselchen des Kornatengebiets in den Raum

der großen Inseln: Veliki Drvenik und Mali Drvenik, Čiovo, Šolta, Brač, Hvar, Pakleni Otoci („die Hölleninseln“), Vis, Biševo,
Svetac, Brusnik und das weiter entfernte Palagruža
mit den dazugehörigen umliegenden Archipels aus
kleineren Inseln. Die einzelnen großen Inseln bilden mit
dem Festland und den Nachbarinseln Kanäle in OstWest-Richtung. Der äußere Gürtel dieser Adriainseln
ist reich an attraktiven Tauchgebieten, in denen in den
wärmeren Monaten die Unterwassersicht im Meer oft
25 Meter überschreitet. Dies ist das Gebiet, wo die
Adria zwischen Kroatien und Italien am schmalsten
ist, und als günstiger Verkehrsweg ist sie wegen ihrer
vorherbestimmten Transitfunktion eine fast unerforschte
Zone voller Spuren menschlicher Geschichte. Im Gebiet
des Mittleren Dalmatien bestehen trotz der vielen bekannten archäologischen Fundstellen unter Wasser noch immer Spuren
und Informationen über viele noch nicht gefundene Überreste von Schiffbrüchen und Schiffswracks aus Kriegshandlungen
zu Wasser. Auf der Westseite der Insel Vis bietet die Besonderheit der Vulkaninseln von Brusnik bis Jabuka noch immer
attraktive unentdeckte Tauchlokalitäten. Die vulkanische Unterwasserwelt dieses Teils der Adria ist ein unerschöpfliches
Forschungsgebiet der Meeresbiologen. Daher ist das Gebiet des Mittleren Dalmatien ein wahrer Genuss für Taucher, die
die verschiedensten Formen des Tauchens lieben: Das Tauchen zwischen Schiffswracks (Wreck diving), an Unterwasserriffs
und Böschungen (Reef diving), an den reich besiedelten Wänden (Wall diving) und in den Unterwasserhöhlen (Cave diving).

The most attractive location of this submarine zone is from the
island of Čiovo west towards the Cape Ploča. The mainland belt
abounds with locations where many fish species can be found
and sea clarity is great thanks to the westward currents. The once rich submarine zone of Kaštel Bay
even today is one of the largest shellfish areas and historically, this area is still an undiscovered treasury
of ancient times. Human settlements date back to the Stone Age (Trogir - Pantana) while archaeological
find sites are at Resnik, Salona and Split.

Die attraktivsten Lokalitäten dieses Meeresteils liegen westlich der Insel Čiovo in Richtung auf das Rt
Ploča. Der Festlandsgürtel ist reich an Stellen, die viele Fischsorten enthalten, und die Klarheit des
Meeres ist dank der ständigen Westströmung groß. Das einst an Unterwasserleben unendlich reiche
Becken der Kaštelabucht ist noch heute eine der wichtigsten Fundstellen von Muscheln in dieser
Gegend, und in historischer Hinsicht ist sie eine noch unentdeckte Schatzkammer der Antike. Die
menschliche Besiedelung datiert aus der Steinzeit (Trogir - Pantana), und die antiken Orte Resnik,
Salona und Split sind das ständige Objekt archäologischer Forschungen.

Though at first glance this is a poorly indented coast with steep
cliffs, this area has specific and unique diving locations. Along
with several shallow and easily accessible wrecks, the zone
between Omiš and Makarska is particularly interesting with the zone of VRULJES with several sources
of subterranean rivers (sinkholes) bringing cold and clear water from the Dalmatian karst - an attraction
for more extreme diving activities exclusively in periods of calm waters (nitrox & trimix). The capes are
sites where numerous fish species are found feeding, thanks to the constant northward currents from
the mouth of the Neretva River.

Obwohl es nach außen hin wie eine nur wenig gegliederte Küste mit steilen Felsen wirkt, hat dieses
Gebiet seine spezifischen und einzigartigen Tauchlokalitäten. Neben einigen seichten und zugänglichen
Schiffswracks ist insbesondere die Zone zwischen Omiš und Makarska, das Gebiet VRULJA, in dem
sich mehrere Quellen unterirdischer Flüsse befinden, die kaltes, klares Wasser aus dem dalmatinischen
Karst fördern, eine Attraktion für extremere Tauchaktivitäten. Dies gilt jedoch ausschließlich in der
Zeit eines ruhigeren Wasserzuflusses (Nitrox & Trimix). Die vielen Buchten bilden den Lebensraum
zahlreicher Fischsorten, die in den ständigen Strömungen von der Neretva-Mündung nach Norden ihre
Nahrung finden.

From the cape of Ploča towards the southeast, along the coast
Drvenik
and towards the islands (Drvenik Veliki, Drvenik Mali, Orud)
we find many interesting dive sites, reefs and walls where
walls with corals are found at depths of 18 to 60 metres. This zone has a large number of intermittent
archaeological finds, primarily the waste of broken pottery cast off ancient ships in their sailing towards
the north. Zones of archaeological locations are also found near the islet of Muljica, the coast of the old
settlement of Trogir, and the southern and western side of the island of Čiovo.
The submarine parts of this section of the coast are similar to those in the western belt of the large
islands on the open part of the Adriatic. Schools of Atlantic bonito, tuna, greater amberjack and other
pelagic fish species are commonly found here.

Vom Rt Ploča entlang der Küste nach Südosten und zu den Inseln (Drvenik Veliki, Drvenik Mali, Orud)
finden wir interessante Tauchgebiete, Böschungen, Felsen und Wände unter der Wasseroberfläche,
wo sich zwischen 18 und 60 Meter Tiefe Wände mit Gorgonien erstrecken. Die Zone enthält eine
größere Zahl sporadischer archäologischer Funde, hauptsächlich die Abfälle zerbrochener Tongefäße,
die von antiken Schiffen auf ihrer Fahrt nach Norden abgeworfen wurden. Bekannt sind die Zonen
archäologischer Fundstellen um die kleine Insel Muljica, an der Küste der Siedlung Stari Trogir und an
der Süd- und Westseite der Insel Čiovo.
Die Unterwasserwelt dieses Küstenteils ähnelt dem westlichen Gürtel der großen Inseln im offenen Teil
der Adria. Häufig sieht man während eines Törns Schwärme von Atlantischen Bonitos, Thunfischen,
Großen Bernsteinmakrelen und anderen pelagischen Fischen.

In the zone Šolta—Brač, the sea walls are home to a rich world of
flora and fauna and for centuries, this has represented the main
maritime traffic link of northern Dalmatia with the trade centres of
the day: Aspalathos (Split), Salona (Solin) and Tragurium (Trogir). The outer side of the island of Šolta is
still insufficiently investigated and attractive to divers interested in the steep and wild coasts of the island
which has been withstanding the influence of the open sea for thousands of years. In terms of geology,
this zone abounds with many karst caves directly near the coast, and along the coastal belt in the sea.
The Brač zone has several unique diving sites, primarily along southern coast. The best known caves
are in Lučice Cove on the southwestern coast of Brač, where schools of greater amberjack can often
be found. This open sea species is a special attraction.

In der Zone Šolta – Brač findet man eine reichhaltige Flora und Fauna an den Wänden. Sie bildete
Jahrhunderte lang auf dem Meer die Hauptverkehrsachse zwischen dem nördlichen Dalmatien und den
damaligen Handelszentren Aspalathos (Split), Salona (Solin) und Tragurium (Trogir). Die noch immer
Brač
unzureichend erforschte Außenseite von Šolta ist für Taucher interessant, die an steilen und wilden
Inselküsten interessiert sind, die über Tausende von Jahren dem Einfluss des offenen Meeres widerstanden
haben. Geologisch gesehen ist diese Zone reich an Karsthöhlen in unmittelbarer Küstennähe, aber auch
am Küstengürtel im Meer.
Die Zone Brač hat mehrere einzigartige Tauchgebiete, vor allem an ihrer Südküste. Am bekanntesten ist
die Höhle in der Bucht von Lučica an der Südwestküste von Brač, in der sich häufig Schwärme der Großen
Bernsteinmakrele aufhalten, die als Fischsorte des offenen Meeres eine besondere Attraktion darstellt.

Along the coast of Hvar, the most significant diving sites are
the passage in the Hvar Cabal Cape, the island of Vodnjak
(also called Kampanel), Stambedar, the coves Vela Garška and
Pelegrin. Vodnjak is the most visited of locations and is attractive due to the two submerged reefs in the
form of columns overgrown with corals. Many locations around the island of Hvar are under cultural and
natural heritage protection. However, diving centres on Hvar can organize a visit to all the most attractive
locations. Submarine reefs, caves and tunnels and submarine walls rich in many fish species are a true
haven for underwater photographers.

An der Küste von Hvar sind die bedeutendsten Tauchgebiete die Passage im Hvarer Rt Kabal, die Insel
Vodnjak (das so genannte „Kampanel“), Stambedar, die Bucht Vela Garška und Pelegrin. Vodnjak ist
Hvar
das meistbesuchte Gebiet. Es gewinnt seine Attraktivität von zwei Unterwasserriffs mit der Form von
mit Gorgonien bewachsenen Säulen. Viele Stellen um die Insel Hvar stehen als Kultur- und Naturerbe
unter besonderem Schutz, aber die Tauchzentren auf Hvar können einen Besuch aller interessanteren
Gebiete organisieren. Die Unterwasserriffs, -höhlen und –tunnel sowie die Unterwasserwände, die
reich sind an verschiedenen Fischsorten, sind ein wahres Paradies für Unterwasserfotografen.

For many centuries, Vis has been an active area of trade and
maritime transport. In addition to traces on land of the antique
settlement of Issa, still not completely investigated, in the sea we
find archaeological sites, particularly near the entrance to Vis Harbour. In the sea around the island of
Vis, there are a significant number of older and newer wrecks which attract many divers. The majority of
wrecks are trading ships (Vassilios, Teti, Brioni) which can only be visited when accompanied by a diver
from the authorized diving centres in Vis and Komiža. Due to the depth of the sites (airplane and war
ship wrecks lie at more than 60 metres depth), technical diving is developing fastest here (Trimix).
Other sites interesting for divers: the Blue Cave on the island of Biševo which, as legend has it, was the
home of the god Poseidon; Bear Cave on the same island which was once home to the Mediterranean
monk seal; Green Cave on the islet Ravnik off the southeastern side of the island of Vis.

Vis ist seit vielen Jahrhunderten ein aktives Gebiet des Handels und des Schiffsverkehrs. Außer den Spuren der
noch völlig unerforschten antiken Metropole ISSA auf dem Festland finden wir im Meer, insbesondere rund um die
Hafeneinfahrt von Vis, archäologische Fundstellen. Im Wasser um die Insel Vis befindet sich auch eine größere Zahl von
Schiffswracks des Altertums und der Neuzeit, die wie überall auf der Welt zahlreiche Taucher anziehen. Die meisten
Wracks sind Handelsschiffe (Vassilios, Teti, Brioni), die nur in Begleitung ermächtigter Tauchzentren aus Vis und Komiža
besucht werden können. Wegen der Tiefe ihrer Lage (Wracks von Flugzeugen und Kriegsschiffen, die in mehr als 60
Meter Tiefe liegen) entwickeln sich technische Tauchverfahren hier am schnellsten (Trimix).
Auch die Modra Špilja (die Blaue Grotte) auf Biševo ist für Taucher interessant. Sie war der Legende zufolge der Sitz des
Gottes Poseidon. Ebenso sehenswert sind die Medvjeđa Špilja auf Biševo, die einst ein Habitat der Mönchsrobbe war,
einer Robbenart des Mittelmeers, und die Zelena Špilja auf der kleinen Insel Ravnik auf der Südostseite der Insel Vis.

The westernmost zone of the Vis archipelago is unique in
terms of its geological origin: the island appeared in a volcanic
Palagruža
belt that is very active and connected via the underground
volcanic belt to Mts. Vesuvius, Etna and Stromboli in Italy. As such, the marine biology in this part of
the Adriatic is specific in its development on the dark volcanic cliffs (Brusnik). Svetac and Palagruža
are oases of pelagic fish species and rich in cultural heritage. Palagruža is particularly significant due
to the rich sea life which for hundreds of years has been a traditional fishing zone for the settlement
of Komiža on the island of Vis. In addition to the attractive marine biology, particularly for underwater
photographers, Palagruža is protected due to the numerous archaeological finds there, dating from
prehistory to recent times.

Die westlichste Zone des Viser Archipels besitzt eine einzigartige geologische Entstehungsgeschichte:
Die Inseln entstanden im Gürtel einer unterirdischen vulkanischen Störungszone, die sehr aktiv ist und
mit dem unterirdischen Vukangürtel Vesuv, Ätna und Stromboli in Italien in Verbindung steht. So ist
auch die Unterwasserbiologie dieses Teils der Adria in ihrer Entwicklung an den dunklen vulkanischen
Felsen (Brusnik) spezifisch. Svetac und Palagruža sind Oasen für Fischsorten des offenen Meeres und
reich an kulturellem Erbe. Palagruža ist besonders bekannt für seine reiche Unterwasserwelt, die seit
Jahrhunderten die traditionelle Fischereizone der Viser Ortschaft Komiža ist. Außer der Meeresbiologie,
die für Unterwasserfotografen interessant ist, steht Palagruža auch wegen seiner zahlreichen
archäologischen Funde aus prähistorischer Zeit bis heute unter besonderem Schutz.
